She called the idea of Tulsi running for president 'monsterous'. Most people don't even know who the president of Syria is or any of his attrocious crimes. Kamala Harris attacked Gabbard herself - multiple press outlets reported on it. Good segment. I do note at 8:20 "We can renew the tree of liberty"... that's foolish. The phrase specifically refers to armed uprisings - usually out of ignorance - that have to be crushed by the government. "What signify a few lives lost?": Jefferson explicitly accepted the 2nd amendment, as the tool for keeping government in check, and that it had a blood price. The ignorant, the patriot and the tyrant alike all have to die to sustain the tree of liberty. Few on the right would say that. Fewer still, on the left. Jefferson was a genius, and this letter is an absolute masterpiece. But it should not be cited lightly. Especially when the nation is already a powderkeg.
Perhaps Weiss and Maher did not criticize Israel enough to your liking, but Bari Weiss concluded the interview with, "One thing that I think was made stark this week is that there are many Jews...who have liked many of Trump's policies regarding Israel (the moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and the scuttling of the Iran nuclear deal)...but I hope this week that American Jews have woken up to the price of that bargain: They have traded policies that they like for the values that have sustained the Jewish people - and frankly, this country for forever: Welcoming the stranger; dignity for all human beings; equality under the law; respect for dissent; love of truth. These are the things we are losing under this president - and no policy is worth that price."
She's a brilliant speaker (as long as I ignore "...woken up..."). The values she talks about: welcoming the stranger, dignity for all, equality under the law, etc., should be universal values. I know that they are for Unitarian-Universalists. (I'm both - I belong to a synagogue and a UU church...long story...) I wish Trump supporters would consider these values and embrace them as others have.
Synagogue is attacked... "This is antisemitism!" Mosque is attacked... "This was an act of Islamophobia!" Churches are attacked on Easter... "Our sympathy to the Easter worshipers." One of these things is not like the other thing.
Some people here are suggesting that she is being hypocritical because of what is happening in Israel. When discussing a heinous event, it is not necessary to bring up every (or even any) previous heinous event. It would only be an issue if she turned around & said that one particular heinous event justified another heinous event. Yes, I understand that some of that is going on, particularly in the case of Israel. However, the case of the Israeli & the Palestinian issue is more complex because there are those among the supporters of the Palestinian issue who really do want to wipe Israel from the face of the Earth. There seem to be elements on both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian issue who believe the other side must be destroyed in order for their own side to survive. Of course, that is also the rhetoric of Trump.
Not being snarky, but did Weiss have a response to the Charleston massacre? There are many Jewish that harbor racist sentiments against blacks. And while what happened in Pittsburgh is horrific, I find it fascinating how silent so many Jewish journalists in the media were in terms of this kind of personalized response that have spoken so much about this incident. Particularly when there was this call to condemn Farrakhan, who has been utterly irrelevant since the late 90s, as if blacks were silently co-signing his nutty ass. That’s what bugs me. Where’s the condemnation of David Lau and Miri Regev and Naftali Bennett and David Horowitz?
Many Jews who harbor racist sentiment against blacks??? There have been 4 anti-Jewish hate crimes by blacks in NYC alone this week. Have any black journalists spoken out against that? You can tell which way the hate goes by which way the violence goes. Blacks treat other minorities like the KKK treated them and when it's resented they call it racist. Why should she have to prove she spoke out against the Charleston massacre? Are you judging the reaction of blacks to the Pittsburgh massacre to how they reacted to Charleston. There is this weird thing with blacks where they always demand everyone "prove" they treat them equally. Notice it's never a two way street. I haven't seen one black person who's treated this the same way as Charleston so get over yourself. As far as those Jewish people you mentioned at the end of your comment. None of them are supported by Jewish Democrats or anti-racist leaders. None of them spew hatred like Farrakhan either. A couple of them aren't even Americans. A better question would be why Jews like Rosanne Barr and Donald Sterling have their careers destroyed while blacks who spew much worse about Jews have zero consequences. Boo hoo hoo people are going after Farrakhan. He's supported by some of the most powerful black Democrats and activists who are constantly whining about anti-black racism. It should be called out again and again. The Dems wouldn't allow Richard Spencer or Meir Kahane supporters to have positions of power and neither should Farrakhan supporters. Blacks have a lot of blind spots and tend to project their failings on others. Your comment is example A.
I totally read your post backwards.. I was watch watching the video, relaxing and just keyed in on black and the minister in your post with out slowing down and really reading your post... So sorry..I apologise
78% of Jews voted for President Obama in 2008. That was the highest percentage of any group besides black voters. Bari Weiss started an organization in college to support Sudanese victims of civil war. Weiss was an editor, yes an editor, at NYT Opinion during Charleston. Are you suggesting NYT didn't publish Opinion pieces decrying Charleston??? Weiss typically does not WRITE, since she's an editor. She happened to GROW UP in Pittsburgh, hence penning hr own piece this time about an event. But as an editor, surely you aren't suggesting the Opinion section of NYT has avoided Charleston, or so many other hate crimes against black communities? As a followup question - might I ask whether you've wondered whether Catholic writers who wrote about pedophilia in the Catholic church had also written about pedophilia in other religions or seem only to care about Catholic children? When a black journalist writes about a shooting in a black church, do you immediately wonder whether he/she has written about Sandy Hook, where white kids were killed? You may want to check whether you well-intended social concern might also have a tinge of bigotry, wherein you're immediately skeptical of a Jewish journalist writing about an anti-Semitic incident, but it has not occurred to you to always do this when other journalists write about the communities they know well. Nothing wrong with asking good questions - just make sure you apply the same standards to everyone.

Criticism of Israel's government policies is certainly legitimate. However, when you willfully ignore, or lie about the tortured and complex history of this conflict with the intent of demonizing Israel then one also has a right to question whether anti-semitism is a factor in that person's views.
The most cogent and honest discussion of antisemitism - in all its manifestations; on the right and the left - that I've ever seen on American TV. Thanks, Bill.
In reading through the first few comments I think one of the most important things she said has been missed, and that is - you don't trade "policy wins" for "your moral values". Once values are gone then all protection from antisemitism is gone. For that matter, protection for any targeted group is gone.
There is a subtle distinction that is VERY important. She was speaking of Trump supporters, Trump voters. She is neither. She yes, she supported the move, but he was already in office. She traded nothing. She didn't sit back as say "this man is dangerous for these reasons [fill in as many blanks as needed], but I'll vote for him regardless because he's gonna move the embassy. That's the difference. I think it's clear that on the whole, she'd have preferred he not be in office, even if that meant the embassy remained where it was. With regard to Trump, and the embassy, I am in perfect sync with her.
As a Jew, I have to say, it isn't "anti-semitic" when leftists criticize Israel for its authoritarian, right-wing policies and the modern-day holocaust it is committing against our Palestinian brothers and sisters. Really despicable how these two are unable to separate Jewish people vs. the Israeli government, which btw is not an infallible, "strong" entity. Don't they realize that approx. half of Israeli citizens oppose the government and its policies towards muslims? I suppose we are anti-semitic against ourselves? What a disappointment... “New Jerusalem” is often used to describe a utopia. You’ll find it in the British patriotic song “Jerusalem” and in many speeches by the British Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee (1945-51)
It's sad what happen, but i hope this will make you guys more empathetic towards black people especially poor and underprivileged, because it happen in our communities and life everyday until it look and sound normal.
What happened to Pittsburgh is horrible and terrible event of anti-Semitism. But it’s kinda dangerous to label a legitimate criticism of Israel human rights violations as anti-Semitic
Or maybe, just MAYBE it's because they've spent the last few decades commuting genocide against Palestinians. But keep drumming on about how criticism of Israel is because it's Jewish, it completely ignores the fact that Jewish citizens of Israel are also critical of the policy.
This seems completely detached from reality. I respect Jewish people and culture but don't shit in my ear and call it information. This is diminishing the experience of black Americans in a way that I'm not sure people realize. To act as if the average Jewish experience is remotely similar to the systemic oppression of black people is insane and obvious manipulation. Black people don't have the global support network the Jewish people have. It's insulting and makes any criticism a hate crime. Come on folks...
@MsKsmith1234 The Jewish Community At Large has not been disenfranchised in any way in modern America. To act as if the experience of Jewish people in America is remotely close to anything that presents disadvantages to former American slaves is insulting and it takes away the focus on the systemic issues they face. It's extreme privilege being overly sensitive when 1 single event happens. It's an inverted opposite of what I see black people experience.
Check out the pictures he showed on the "New rules" bit of Nazi gatherings in the 30's in the US. Antisemitism exists in the US. You could see it in Charlotsvile too. @MsKsmith1234 No, I just shouldn't have to explain how lopsided the response to Jewish deaths is compared to the deaths of thousands of black people by the hands of the system where supposedly Jewish people are their allies but have still let hell rain down on poor blacks, poor whites, and poor Arabs, Palestinians, etc. Do I need to be any more clear? Have I demonstrated enough for some random person online that could be AI at this point? I'll send you an invoice if you want more, because I'm not your fucking slave either. It only takes 1 Jewish person offended to be a hate crime while blacks are routinely shot and disposable. It's a crime against humanity and nobody trusts that it's going to correct course this time.
@@michalperach984 Definitely, and I'm not saying it doesn't exist and isn't dangerous. I'm saying children are watching all this wondering why there's such a dramatic difference in the responses over human beings dying. Black people are just as sacred as Jewish people in my eyes.
I was at a Green Party gathering, just before 2016 "election", where a guest was spouting crazy Jewish conspiracy theories, and was surprised that he wasn't asked to leave. Many cringed, but still. U mean the 130,000 Ethiopians who were taken to Israel to have better lives? As opposed to the 5 richest Muslim countries who wont even take in Syrian Refugees.
How are Jewish migrants treated in Africa? What's up with this always asking how people treat Africans but never how Africans treat others? Africans have a continent 3 times the size of the US while Israel is smalled than New Jersey. Considering how blacks constantly demonize Israel why would they take any Africans in? They have their own continent and since they act like Israel is the devil why should they lift a finger for blacks?

They had to go to Europe, because no Arab country would take Syrians (except Jordan) 3. Did you know that Syrians cross the border into Israel for medical treatment? Yes, Israel can always do better. Along with the brutality that goes on in African American communities? It felt like she was being isolating in more ways than one; including her comments about Israel & agreeing with Trump. Jews handling money goes back to early Christianity, as handling money was considered "dirty" so it was relegated to the Jews. That's how Jews came to be money lenders and bankers, etc. Not because there was some evil plot, it's because it was thrust upon them. As a long time non-practicing Jew, one of the things I do love about my religion is that education is held in such high esteem. Even in times when women weren't supposed to be educated, Jewish girls learned to read and write. Everyone needs to get over these crazy conspiracies and work together. This "journalist" called Tulsi Gabbards, "monstrous", on the Joe Rogan show. Now we must sympathize w/ her, because the modern age of revitalized racism has touched her 'directly'. She called the idea of Tulsi running for president 'monsterous'. Most people don't even know who the president of Syria is or any of his attrocious crimes. Kamala Harris attacked Gabbard herself - multiple press outlets reported on it. So let me guess, you've done some quick catch up Googling and you have something to say about Assad's dictatorship and use of chemical warfare? And you call Bari 'dispicably & willfully smugnorant'.
Bari, I can only imagine how hard this interview was for you. May their memories be a blessing.
She's a brilliant speaker (as long as I ignore "...woken up..."). The values she talks about: welcoming the stranger, dignity for all, equality under the law, etc., should be universal values.

I am extremely grateful to live in a multi-racial country that has benefited from the immense intellectual, cultural and humanitarian contributions of the Jewish community. The general message of the video is very timely. However, it is odd that Bill Maher is quite willing to criticize Trump's right-wing nationalism in the US, and yet voices no caution against Netanyahu's right-wing nationalism in Israel, and in fact criticizes others for doing so?
Is it odd though Sam? Bill Maher the "atheist" has made that name for himself by attackin every religion except for Judaism. Even his movie hits every religion but then shows jews making contraptions to get around the sabbath? Should have told you everything you needed to know.

Now THIS is the Anti-Semitism she's talking about.
What happened to Pittsburgh is horrible and terrible event of anti-Semitism. But it’s kinda dangerous to label a legitimate criticism of Israel human rights violations as anti-Semitic
This was an odd interview...
@MsKsmith1234 it's not my job to make you understand
Check out the pictures he showed on the "New rules" bit of Nazi gatherings in the 30's in the US. Antisemitism exists in the US. You could see it in Charlotsvile too. Many times it's the same assholes who spread hate and lies against african americans and jews. The two comunities should stand together against hate.
