LORE - SoulCalibur Lore in a Minute!
One day in an alternate universe, the Soul Edge was an ordinary, happy sword, but the blood and hatred of centuries past gained the blade a demonic soul called Inferno. Legend tells that those who try to wield the Soul Edge are consumed and driven insane by its power, a warning that really should be paid attention to but people are rarely that smart. King Algol, the first known bearer of the Soul Edge, was strong enough to conquer it, but his jealous son -- Arcturus -- was not. Eventually possessed, Arcturus was slain by his dad out of necessity and the King, driven by vengeance, sacrificed himself to create the holy blade known as Soul Calibur, the only weapon that could possibly destroy the demon within Soul Edge.
In the 16th century, the crafty and shape-shifting Soul Edge resurfaces as a pair of twin blades aboard the ship of captain Cervantes de Leon. Possessed by their power, Cervantes slaughters his crew and chills in a Spanish port-town (which he also massacred) for about 25 years. It's at this point that a holy warrior named Sophitia appears and is able to destroy the smaller of the two blades while a demon huntress named Taki also shows up and kills Cervantes himself. with Cervantes no longer in control, a young man named Siegfried, broken and deranged after accidentally beheading his father, finds Soul Edge and is easily possessed, assuming the role as the Azure Knight, Nightmare, and devoting his life to consuming souls. What a great guy.
With 7 games about two swords, the warriors who are after them and a dynamic breasts-physics system, how can you go wrong?

You can shove the game twenty years into the future, make the story even more anime-convoluted, kill fan favorite characters off-screen and replace them with cookie-cutter newcomers with none of the charm.

The gameplay and multiplayer's fun too, but you're right though, when compared to the older games, 5 is pretty disappointing, it could have been far better had it not been rushed.

This is actually a pretty amazing summary of the story leading up to SCII lol... just add in that siggy's sudden decision to wake up lets raphael stab soul edge in the eye, zasalamel reanimates the old blue armor which becomes nightmare again, then the two set out to destroy each other as the hosts of soulcalibur and soul edge =p

I love this game so much. I don't care if the future games might go downhill, I'm still buying it. I just hope the next game, if they're making one, covers everyone's story.

As far as I know Siegfried was eventually split from soul edge, but it had consumed enough of him while he was possessed that it was able to create a manifestation of Nightmare to continue rampaging.

Some how Darth Vader and Yoda also go after the sword despite having the power to destroy a whole planet. Also Eizo is in for the sword too (reason unknown).

I dont know much about it, but apparently he took the armor and sword off him...SOMEHOW...and then donned the weapon of ...SoulCaliber was it?...unsure.
David Mejia Jr I'm still making that question to myself when I play SoulCalibur for Dreamcast... But I like his black armor in the 2P, I like how black fits him. x'D
David Mejia sieg was dominated by soul edge thus nightmare only playable in sc2. in sc3 he destroyed soul edge and i believe soul edge found another host

As I understand it Siegfried was only fully Nightmare in Soul Calibur 1, and even then he regained his humanity after Xianghua and Kilik shattered Soul Edge at the end of the game. In Soul Calibur 2 it is implied Nightmare only awakened when Siegfried fell asleep. In Soul Calibur 3 Zasalamel resurrected the will of Nightmare without a host but then that Nightmare was destroyed by Siegfried in Soul Calibur 4. Then in Soul Calibur 5 it has a new human host, Graf Dumas.

I freaking love the lore stories!!! And the scary part is... when you guys make this.... shortened version of 7 games... you can't stop to think that you actually have been playing a game with a crappy story that doesn't continue the story of the previous part... :P
You forgot the part when Siegfried gets un-consumed but someone else dons the Nightmare armor and soul-edge, explaining why the Siegfried ingame wields Soul-Caliber.

At the end of Soul Calibur 2, Siegfried regains his sanity, stabs Soul Edge with Soul Calibur, and abandons Nightmare's armour. Zasalamel, an immortal seeking to regain his mortality through the Soul blades, uses dark magic on the armour to resurrect Nightmare as a phantom warrior.
Then yoda senses dark energy from soul edge and banishes it with the force
Siegfried was originally Nightmare, but he regained control over his body and stabbed Soul Calibur into Soul Edge in Soul Calibur 2. Then Zasalamel finds the ruins of the original Nightmare's armor and brings them to life, creating the new Nightmare in Soul Calibur 3. That version of Nightmare is then destroyed by Siegfried in Soul Calibur 4, which brings us to Soul Calibur 5. Have fun!
siegfried is nightmare in SC II (hence nightmare's alt costumes are siegfried).
prior to SC III zasalamel turned the armor of siegfried / nightmare into an autonomous being (in SC IV he also controls several clones and a character called revenant so apparently he can do that) thus spliting the two up again and returning siegfried to the game
so from that moment on he is a new being in every game until SC V where he latches on to a human host again
@FullmetalChao Horde fights alliance, demons come so they fight together, then a new magical area pops up and they split into two factions aside from the previous two, then undead guy shows up so they kick his butt, then a world eating octopus thing comes so they proceed to do seemingly random quest to help stop him?
The story just follows wherever the two swords go
The new nightmare is a possessed suit of armour that remembers sigrfied's fighting style. I forget how (probably soul calibur's influence), he broke free of it and is now all about hunting down and destroying soul edge

@TheGhostOfReach The whole series takes place during the late stages of the Renaissance, which is roughly the same time Assassin's Creed II takes place. My guess: Ezio got himself involved with Soul Calibur and Soul Edge briefly while looking for clues about the Pieces of Eden.
@MyFlamingpanda Seigfried was first wielding Soul Edge, then later, forcing Edge to leaving him and wielding Calibur and piercing it in SC3

Of course there will be an SCVI, It is such a big IP for Namco, and there is alot of money involved.
Eventually the soul in Soul Edge constructs Knightmare's newest body because it's the form it is most used to.
actually if i remember the begging story was in a game called soul edge. it showed he prince turning into nightmare and everything. cervantes getting his ass kicked and all that jazz

@Sorosidelps Ok, I figured it out, Siegfried is the orginal weilder of Soul Edge and was the original Nightmare in soul calibers 1-3. If you ever played soul caliber 2, one of nightmares alternate costumes was him being Siegfried. He seases being nightmare and gives it to Dumas in soul Caliber 4. So yeah, thats the story if Siegfried and Nightmare.
Soul Calibur (I'm talking about the sword) seems to be a girl in her "red days", if you know what I mean. Is practically like Soul Edge, but with glass and an angelic appearence.
And she fell in love with Siegfried, that's why he has the glass armor.
I'm not kidding.
She built a strong bond with Siegfried and then she got fusioned with him.

EXACTLY! It's better to wait and produce something great, than to rush and produce something average or mediocre. What was that Shigeru quote? "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."
The guys at Irrational Games take this to heart, and that's why Bioshock Infinite won't come out until March. I'm actually happy about that- it makes the game that much better.
Why can't the people at Namco realize the same? I hope that there will, eventually be a directors cut of SC5!
@MyImaginaryTiger Nightmare in Soul Calibur 2 = Siegfried possessed by Soul Edge. Nightmare in Soul Calibur 3&4 = Inferno (Soul Edge's will) possessing the armor that Siegfried wore as Nightmare (the body was created with the help of Zasalamel). Nightmare in Soul Calibur 5 = Someone else got possessed by soul edge after Siegfried tore him up in 4.
Siegfried was a stupid arrogant young man who formed a group called the Schwarzwind, his father and what was left of his unit came home after a defeat in some battle and Siegfried and his group attacked them thinking they were deserters. In the chaos (I guess his father had his helmet on or something) Siegfried beheaded him.

After he sought to redeem himself in SC3, he began to wield Soul Calibur.
Not only that but I do recall in soul calibur 2 he had an outfit which was siegfried. He had one costume which was nightmare( Malicious I think) one which was when he was half turned (Demonic arm and legs) and one where he was completely normal.
@Playstation3userr Basically Siegfried used to be Knightmare, but between Soul Calibur 2 and 2 he broke free with the help of the Soulcalibur, and the Soul Edge took its own presona as Knightmare, so basically Soul Edge is Knightmare, and vice versa...
Siegfried being "a murderer for no reason" is mainly Soul Edge's doing, I think.
The first game was called Soul Edge and the second one was named Soul Calibur, the name which they kept. There was also a game for the psp called Soul Calibur: Broken destiny. You could say there's 8 games if you count Soul Calibur Legends but it's a spin off.
Siegfried is one of the most contemptible characters in the series- but that's what makes him interesting. He's a murderer with no reason, a backstabber, and to top it off, he had a pretty sweet life unlike the other characters. Even his reason for finding the sword is self-inflicted.
Even Cervantes has a less assholish background. And Patroklos, even the one stupidly following orders, too.

In 5 he breaks free but gives soul edge to some guy because he claims there has to be a nightmare which means that the nightmare is in soul caliber 5 is not the same nightmare as before. Which doesn't make any since but niether does the story line... so yeah.
wow! you actually managed to piece together the clusterfuck of the story. I played all the stories of the characters and it always told it as if you already knew a few details WHICH NEVER SHOWS YOU.
@MyFlamingpanda He wields Soul Edge for Soul Calibur to Soul Calbur 2, in Soul Calibur 3 and 4 he wields Soul Calibur to end Soul Edge. There's quite a bit they left out but I understand why, they have a minute to do it. I suggest going to the Soul Calibur Wiki to see more.

nightmare and siegfried are different people. both were originally the azure knight. At the end of the second game, siegfried(as the azure knight, whom was evil) snapped out of his evil possesion. He abandoned his armor and sword(soul edge). Soul edge then possessed siegfrieds armor to become nightmare.

No, I was talking about Soul Edge/Soul Blade, the arcade only game that came out before Soul Calibur.
But I was wrong about what I said. It turns out Sophitia was in Soul Edge to begin with and Lizardman didn't appear untill Soul Calibur. I was confused and thought it was the other way around...

@ShadowRosalina If I'm not mistaken, Siegfried ceases to be Nightmare after Soul Calibur 2 and from then on wields Soul Calibur.
Siegfried broke free from soul edges possession later in the series but with the help of a wizard named zassalamel(probably wrong spelling) siegfrieds abandoned armor was brought to life with the soul of the dormant soul edge sword and became an identity of its own. Play soul cal 3&4 which should hint at the idea.
Soul Blade (also called Soul Edge) is the predecessor to the Soulcalibur games, which would be why it has the same characters and storyline.
@CanadianSaiyan, Lloyd appeared in SoulCalibur: Legends for the Nintendo Wii. The more you know.

Soul Calibur's lore is too big for just a minute, so I'm glad they shortened it to only be about Soul Calibur and Soul Edge. I mean, Ivy Valentine's storyline could take up an entire video in itself. She has by far the best storyline out of all the characters, imo. She's just an all around amazingly done character, everything flows so well with her.

Seigfried's physical body became Nightmare. Seigfried's soul was reincarnated by Soul Calibur to fight Soul Edge.
There was the battle at Ostreinsburg, the lost cathedral AND the tower of remembrance... and arguably the civil war between the 3 kingdoms... But those aren't important...

good work.. just a little thing.. Cervantes did get Soul Egde from raiding a ship that Rock' s father own that where to going to trade Soul Edge to Voldo's Master
By the end of SCII and between that and SCIII, Siegfried becomes unpossessed by Soul Edge and takes Soul Edge to be destroyed by Soul Calibur. Meanwhile, a separate spirit that is a part of Soul Edge repossesses a suit of armor and becomes the Nightmare shown in SCIII and SCIV.
In SCV, Nightmare is a completely different person, a deranged lord by the name of Dumas, who allows Soul Edge to possess his body in return for it's power, thus becoming the new Nightmare.

for anyone who asks, i can explain warcraft lore to you in a nutshell. mainly based off of both warcraft 3 games, but nontheless it is basically the main plot of warcraft.
Oh yeah, and somehow Link, Darth Vader, The Apprentice, Yoda, and Ezio Auditore managed to wield the swords for some amount of time.
