This is nicely rationalised way of explaining how to elevate an outfit. Too many people are too casual today in the UK. I have been following your advice for a year and people are now openly saying, rather mystified, "You look French"! Mission accomplished!
😃👏 that is wonderful Alison - result 🙌
I agree with you. I never liked wearing jean jacket. Im happy to know we share the same idea. 😊❤
me too!
I’ve been enjoying the slightly more structured, collared Polo knit tops instead of plain, round-neck t-shirts. The pointed collar adds some angles I like and brings the eye up to the face, the open V-neck is very flattering, and overall, they look more polished than a regular tee, but are just as comfy. Banana Republic has some in 100% linen jersey, I bought several colors while they’re still around to replace my now too-large older linen tees. I always feel I look a bit more elevated/polished in tops and dresses with collars. I think the Polo knit tops (and dresses, of which I bought several I love) are classic enough to be worn for many years, I’m glad they’re back.
Amazing 🤩: again: amazing
The polo knit tops never went away for those of us who've dressed dress preppy / classic for decades . Always available in numerous colors fr. Lands End & LL Bean - pairs nicely w/ straight leg jeans or khakis & Sperry Top-Siders .
I agree ❤❤with everything you said. I started replacing things last fall. Gotta shop sales. 😊
You are SO right about the collar points and V-neckline. A round neckline doesn't work for me at all, but angles DO. Can't believe it took me so long to figure that out!
@@burghbrat3319 A scoop neckline is nice too . A boatneck is another choice if it works for one's body / shoulder proportion .
Your lives are practical and excellent classes. And light, like your personality!
Merci Alcidia x
My 'First Rule' is to wear just one thing that is a little bit nicer or more elevated than the outfit needs. It looks nice but not obvious. I think I learned that from you, Marie-Anne -- Thank you!
An excellent rule 😃👍
I’ve come to believe you cannot go wrong with red shoes. And I agree with your assessment of jean jackets. Merci, Marie-Anne!
👠
Last year I bought a very dark blue denim blazer from Macy’s that is cropped and has little puffed sleeves. I just love it and wear it over sun dresses or with a tank top and cropped pants. It is definitely a step up from the normal jean jacket.
This is an amazing video! So practical and understandable. I'm learning so much from you! Even in my 70's I'm reevaluating my look. Doing that is making me feel so much better about this whole aging process and how I feel! Thank you
You are very welcome Brenda I am so glad you are finding my videos helpful 😘
This is how I style my outfit ❤. I have to have at least one chic item per outfit because casual style makes me look juvenile
Good old Clarke's shoes!!
I have not worn denim for a long time. But I did once have a white denim jacket, which I thought looked good, and on which I got many compliments..
I like white lace blouse with the jeans...
Many times, while performing on stage, I've worn my own classic pieces and shoes. A def WOW!
Interesting but a bit too long winded.
@@sheilafisher7255 Why is it?
I've traveled with a nice blazer to pair with a nice pair of colorful jeans and a colorful blouse.
I love Clark’s shoes. Incredibly comfortable.
I wear grey bootcut jeans with a matching grey short slightly fitted jeans jkt, with dolman sleeves. Then black suede ankle boots, a white broderie blouse or white cashmere polo neck, (depending on the weather) and some pearls. It looks fabulous.
I think I’m the only Canadian (in my 50’s) who has never owned a denim jacket 😂 Never liked them. Love the confirmation- thank you! 💕🙏
👍
Merci Marie-Anne, great video and great advice again, the navy jacket elevated the casual outfit nicely. My make-up routine is much like yours, like the natural look, but we need something to pop up like the red lippy. Makes a difference. After watching your videos, I have learned to love how to elevate the casual outlook to French chic casual, the blazer will always elevate jeans and a T-shirt and shoes will always do the "chic trick". Looking forward to the Masterclass but because of the time difference I'm going to watch it later.....as always. Hope you have a fantastic midsummer time and great weekend.🤗🤗❤❤❤
💋
You've taught us so much and you're able to break information down into small bites, so that it so makes sense. Thank you again.
You are very welcome Gill 🤗
Hi Marie Anne, you showed us how easy it is to change a very everyday casual link into something special without having a lot of clothing!!! Very helpful in the way you presented the clothing!!! Thanks so much!!!❤🎉😮
You don't need a lot of clothes to have a versatile wardrobe Sindy 😃
Or genuine glasses too. Take care of your hands as well. Nails, skin etc
Thank you, now i know why french women look so good dressed casual! You are amazingly good at what you do
Also, so much can be done with a few items!
Merci Lidia 🤗
I’m with you Marie-Anne on the denim jackets. I bought a white one for my husband and he looks good in it. On women it’s important to avoid the cliche longish summer dress/ white sneakers/ denim jacket. You see it everywhere.
Thank you Marie Anne for your excellent descriptions and demonstrations. I really get it ! Thank you, thank you very much! This is most helpful.
You are very welcome Annette 😘
Awesome pointers💛
Love the hair color..
I like the idea of wearing a blouse instead of a jacket. I have a thin light pink scarf that looks nice with a white tee and jeans. It’s perfect when it’s warm out.
I always enjoy Marie!! Thank you for sharing the beautiful clothes that can be enjoyed many different ways. Agree that we need to elevate our wardrobes!
😘
I have a navy mid thigh trench jacket and also a tan one. I put on a scarf and I’m ready to go. These elevate my jeans and t shirts. Love your channel!
Lovely as always. I would hardly dare to buy this lace blouse, but can imagine how beautiful it looks.
Why not?
Perhaps it would suit you very well...
:-))
I connected with what you said about jean jackets. I bought a white one but rarely use it because I don’t like how it cuts me off in the middle, and how unflattering the pockets and buttons are. Will seek out more elevated jackets like you’ve shown. Thank you!
😘
I missed this but it is a great video I learned so much, Thank you.
You are very welcome Brenda
Wonderful Class, Thank you! Hoping to do some of your masterclasses soon!
🤗
It is hot 🥵. I have invested in several tee shirts in various colors. I also have gotten several sheer and light casual, Kimono-style jackets. Dress up tees and helps screen arms from sun.
I agree with you regarding the short denim jacket. I do not own one. But I do have a denim sort of barn jacket that I wear only with trousers.
I have 2 blazers and I hardly ever wear themOK now I know why. I go months without wearing them. I am a blazer gal and I love them. Denim jackets make me look frumpy. Thank you for helping me see that.
You are very welcome Sherry x
Oops! I thought this was going live at 4pm London time and I managed to miss the whole livestream! Clever me! 🙃
Me too😢
🎉 I ordered the cashmere wrap you featured in your travel video, it just came today. I love it!! ❤❤
I am so glad you love it Sandy 😃😘
Kimberly from Marin County, California, watched afterward because I was on my morning walk. Forty-five minutes six days a week keeps me a US size 6-8, and healthy. I was walking 90 minutes daily, but cut back because I kept losing more weight and don’t want to buy smaller clothes yet, I just bought almost a whole new wardrobe in 2023 . I wear what I hope is Smart Casual French Chic everyday, generally a casual dress or skirt outfit (ten times more comfy for me than trousers/jeans/shorts) and a blazer. I’m dressing now from my summer capsule wardrobe, all (unlined) linen from now until about November 1, we have hot summer weather here for nearly five months each year (June through October). I’ve seen so many beautiful lined linen dresses this year, but even though the linings are lightweight cotton, they’ll be too hot. Keeping cool is always my principal wardrobe concern in the tricky summer months, I overheat so easily since my mid-40s, it’s been twenty years now and no improvement! I would love a “Dressing Well for the Hottest Weather” video, if you haven’t made one already. Global warming is causing more, literally, killer, heat waves in many places. Breathable, natural fibers are the way to go, of course, and I know looser cuts are effective for cooling, but I look dumpy if I don’t show my waistline (such as it is, I’m a rectangle shape, almost straight up and down). Thanks for considering my suggestion, dear Marie-Anne, I love everything you do on your channels! French Chic style is always the best❤
Merci Kimberly and merci for sharing your casual French Chic 🤗
Thank you Marianne I'm learning so much and able to buy only what I need I have done a complete overhaul of my wardrobe shoes are next x
Yayyyyy 🙌
I do wear denim jackets but never with jeans. I wear them mostly with floral dresses. I love the red jacket that is hanging on the rack.
I really don’t need anything! That is most definitely men’s standard response world-wide to well-meant proposals of a bit of wardrobe updating… 😂
Loving this!💖
This is such an informative and fun video!❤
Glad you enjoyed it Katharina 😃
thanks so much for all this great advice Marie-Anne. As usual I wasn't able to join the livestream live as afternoons tend to be busy times for me. But I enjoyed watching it afterwards. As I am retired now, I tend towards the casual most days so this was really helpful. I need to add a few more nice jackets to my wardrobe. xx
You are very welcome Steph x
I was at work for the live. I'm sorry I missed it. Looks fun
I saw the green Uniqlo cardigan while I was in Berlin recently, but i didnt buy it. Such a mistake especially as you have endorsed it in this fantastic video. Im 68 and it’s been amazing watching and learning from you over the past few months. Thank you for all guidance. Take care Marie Ann
You are very welcome Sharon 🤗
Question: I buy my clothes "off season". I bought a trench in Canada in June (it's 32C and it's so hot). Do you buy your clothes off season to take advantage of the sales?
Always and also buying preloved.
Buying in Sales is a great way top get good value Louisa 😃
You could swap the jeans with the tailored trousers and add heels. That's what I would do.
Missed the live but checking in from Oregon USA! Thank you so much! This is very helpful. I do wonder what you wear to do your gardening chores Marie Anne! Lol 😂 you're always so classy
Watch my recent video on What I eat and do in a day to stay slim Eileen - you will see mw out and about doing chores 👍
How about adding a scarf to the white tee shirt? What are your thoughts on adding scarves?
I try not to leave the house until I have earrings and lipstick!
Scarves are great accessories Reina 😃
I enjoy seeing coordinating jackets upgrading outfits. However, living in tropics does not lend to using such pieces. The most i can do is having a camisole and an open shirt over it.
I have had a few jean jackets in my life because I always thought they were kind of classic look, but I gave away the last one several years ago when I realized I never wore it and I said I'm not buying another one, its just not flattering!
I have 2 denim jackets. One is embroidered with silver sequins. I love that one, but I love outerwear and I have many, many coats. I live in a 4 season climate and don’t drive, so I am exposed to the elements all the time. I use all of my jackets 😊
I'd like to see a video on how many pieces minimum I should have starting with a black and a white tank.
I would love a video for those of us who hate wearing jeans. I know we are greatly in the minority in this one, but there are a few of us who just can’t get a decent fit in them, making them super-ill-fitting and uncomfortable. (In my case, it’s my narrow hips and straight shape, my waist and hips are at least two sizes different, closer to three, even men’s don’t fit). I also just don’t like denim fabric, it’s hot, rough, coarse and stiff. But, stretch denim is even worse and my skin can’t tolerate the Spandex and, often, polyester, in that fabric. Jeans can look great, it’s not that, maybe if I could find custom-made? I can’t get the necessary alterations done on them because of the pockets, they just can’t be taken in at my skinny hips and thighs enough, at least six or seven inches, to make them work. No tailor will alter those flat-felled seams, either, they’re a nightmare to change. Thanks❤
I will see what I can do Kimberly x
I have a denim jacket but it is a blazer and I do like wearing it as a dress down blazer.
Will you show us some more outfits …thanks so much!!! I’m enjoying this 🎉
I regularly do videos like this Sindy so make sure you come back 😃
Maybe it's just a New England thing but a denim jacket is a fall staple. A nice T-shirt and well-fitting jeans and a scarf might elevate it, but it's definitely not French. But I live in New England so it's fine for me.
Some great style tips here so thank you for an informative video.
Hi Marie anne you lovely lady and so funny your fashion is excellent thankyou
🤗
I have a white denim jacket, slightly oversized; It looks ok, I think.
From your lessons, fashion backwards me, I actually wore: Checked linen summer top with an open calico short sleeve button-up blouse
Thank YOU
😘
Central Texas: USA 🇺🇸 : Greetings
👋
Note, a great interesting bag can be a jewelry too.
So wundervolle Ideen ❤❤❤❤
You like high top Convers! I'm glad!
😃
Love your white trousers and top
I have two denim jackets, one blue and one black. There is a twist, though. Although one is dark blue denim it has a zip and it is a bomber style jacket, soft, not rigid and definitely no pockets. The black one, is the same. You have to hunt that style out, the conventional heavy denim with pockets is a flash back to the 80s.
Missed the live show but here from Reno
👋
Absolutely can not do the faded Jean scene. 🌺
👍
No, me neither, they are not smart enough.
The simplest way would be wearing an pale pink Blazer jacket as well.
Marie anne I still like ballet flats or loafers
I'm with you on the denim jacket. Never owned one. I find them uncomfortable and too "high school" and who wants to go back there?! 😂. Same goes with denim skirts and dresses. I love jeans with channel-like jackets. Simple and victorious.
👍
The red Chanel type jacket.
Wonderful live, Marie-Anne. You look so youthful and love your Marinière. Merci beaucoup for your helpful answers and advice 🙏🏻💖
🤗
I like the outfit you are wearing!
I have pants just like them! That shirt looks nice with it. You could wear that navy jacket with it!
💙
Red shoes with that lovely blue white striped sweater
I am enjoying the video. Can you please reveal the name of the brogue sneakers you showed us at the begging of the video? I really would appreciate it. Thank you.
They are by Clarks 😃
@@MarieAnneLecoeur THANK YOU!!!!
I have the staple Jean jacket & have never worn it.
they're actually not very warm or comfortable. I have one in stretch corduroy that is much better, it stretches when you move your arms and it's a lighter fabric than denim
54:51 54:52 Hello, I like your lifestream very much, but I missed it to look in time. Thank you for the good Tipps about French casual chic. It is the correct Method for retired People.
😘
Love your short sleeved white blouse with some gizzard (or what you call it). SO casual chic!! 😍 Whats the brand? Love it so much!! 🍒
Not wearing too much jewelry or at all, it lest the genuine natural Facette of a person coming up.
Such controversy around the denim jacket! I recently purchased a well fitting dark wash denim jacket and I love wearing it over a dress in a nod to the “contrast” approach to style. I feel it looks fresh without trying to be too young. I would not wear anything other than a dark wash jacket, though.
I have a white one from Next, which I've had years. I looks lovely with contrast jeans or tailored trousers with a nice breton or other nice top. I usually wear it with the collar up. It looks very elegant. I keep it looking fresh by washing it every wear.
QUESTION Dearest Marie-Anne! I am wondering if you have any thoughts about the viability of camouflage as a style component. I personally think of it as 'ok' on Barbie and Ken but very few other places. I am tired of certain fashion lines trying to make a go of it and I am wondering if you feel the same.
I am not a fan of camouflage print Jeanne 😘
The details. Jeans, t-shirt, add a better belt on top of the shirt, some chains.
Pulled together.
👍
I'd describe it as casual clothing that's elevated enough to wear while in an important position, or mixing in company with someone who's in an important position, even if it's a casual setting. Women wear somewhat casual dresses to garden parties, but they still have a touch of the formal or give the impression that they show honour to others. A teacher may dress casual chic (or office casual). I don't believe jeans can be casual chic.
Oh no! 😂I own a denim jacket. I've always followed the chic casual rules, 2 or 3 colours, less is more etc but want to ask what you think of wearing, say your smart grey pants and a white linen shirt with a denim jacket. Perhaps shoes similar to your white brogues. Would that change a smart outfit into a casual smart outfit. I know you are not in favour of denim jackets, but would love your opinion. Thank you for sharing your fabulous advice and videos, you really have become a friend to so many of us ladies all around the world!❤
Bonjour J, I am so sorry I am just not a fan of denim jackets 🙁 a nice blazer would look so much better 😘
There is a possibility to wear a denim jacket but only in winter as a seccond layer and on there should be an other elevated winter jacket. Wearing it bottomed up as a Bluse. But, the jeans has not to be very thick and it mzst be a perfect quality.
I would add red shoes to your casual
I never wear denim jeans unless I’m gardening
What make is the lovely navy jacket Marie?
It is by Winser London 💙
Thank you. @@MarieAnneLecoeur
This for instance ist the best way to look chick but not to spend a great amount of money. I do play with Prada used heels, Mary Jane I do have them for ages.
Style does not have to be expensive Barbara😃👍
On the denim jacket comments…
I bought one and did try very hard to fit my casual dress but it never worked out. I gave it away. My opinion… it just doesn’t work
Where to find a soft white t-shirt like this one. What brand? I find them but only with thin fabric. Need a nice weight…

QUESTION: How do you get the text up?
Touch the text box & the letters will pop up
Expensive belt with jeans …instant upgrade…..add pearl studs bingo
I love a nice red belt with black or white jeans.
Are those tan sandals from Clark’s?
They are from Billi Bi Jill 😃
@@MarieAnneLecoeur thank you. 😘
Our husbands must be related -- they all dress alike! :)
😃
Where are the cardigan coats from?
They are from UNIQLO Barbara 😃
Many thanks for the reply - we have a Uniqlo in Kingston upon Thames (my local shopping centre), so I will take a look.
I had to laugh as I'm wearing jeans, navy tee, navy hightops and a smart cardigan (one that looks like a jacket) today! Without the cardigan it feels just too casual, but the cardigan elevates it. I'd never wear the cardigan with tailored trousers as it would feel too formal for me.
I do disagree on the denim jacket, as it totally depends on what you wear with it. If it's worn with tailored trousers then it can be great. I have a more traditional one in ecru, and a chore jacket in a mid wash, both from French brand Sezane. I never wear them with jeans, but always with something more elevated - to me it's the same as wearing jeans with something smarter, and both are ideal in the summer. Wondering what you'd suggest as a more casual jacket if the trousers and shoes are smarter?
I'm now about to go down a Clarks rabbit hole...
Maybe I should do another video the other way around working with one casual item to tone down a smart outfit 😃
