I 1st heard this on a cassette, while on a train when I was 9 years old, always my favourite MJ song. It's a Yesterday, it's an Everybody Hurts, it's a Hallelujah.
I had no idea this song had been covered by so many artists! I like Willie Nelson's version and think he did a really good job of capturing the sadness, then Patti LaBelle put her own "spin" on it for a different, but classic sound. No matter how many people sang it, Michael managed to make it his own and there's no other attempt that's as heartfelt and genuine. I loved Quincy's comments that during every take, Michael couldn't hold back tears and Quincy said to leave them in. That's who Michael was - a gentle soul who felt emotions on a whole other level and he always makes the listener feel his pain while enabling them to sink into their own sadness and work through their despair with him leading the way.
