It is said that Michael took several takes before the final mix, because he was so emotional and cried uncontrollably. This final outcome has him tear up at the end.
This was the 4th and final single from the breakthrough album, OFF THE WALL
That he brought himself to tears at the end speaks to how much he really lives his music. Not his typical upbeat song, but incredible nonetheless.
The lyrics tell me that he didn’t know how to handle the relationship, how to be honest with her. “Damned indecision and cursed pride / I kept my love for her locked deep inside” and “Now I’ve learned that love needs expression, but I learned too late”. But his response to losing her seems more permanent than just a relationship gone bad.
A really great album from Michael Jackson. My favorite Michael Jackson album actually. Definitely needs to be heard.
I also like "Off the Wall" better than "Thriller".

@@Metalphysicalpodcast 100% agree off the wall was more soulful and more Michael esque than thriller and all his other albums in my opinion. It had that natural black groovy funky soul type of feel that none of his other albums had.
Great Reaction! It's a Typical story. The Guy didn't know how much his girl did for him and he took her love for granted. It caused her to just drift away And now that she's gone he realises how much she meant to him.

That’s the power of MJ even when he’s singing the song in the Short Film/Music Video you can still see that he’s passionate yet emotionally invested about what he’s singing. Also this was filmed the same day as “Rock With You” also recording “She’s Out Of My Life” MJ had to do 7-10 takes cause he cried at the end of the song every time so Quincy Jones just kept it in the final cut,and the reason MJ cried during each take of the song while recording it he said that he cried from the sudden effect of the words because in his words "I had been letting so much build up inside me." Particularly it reminded him of his feeling of being "so rich in some experiences while being poor in moments of true joy." He worried about this feeling showing up on the song,but also felt in his words "if it touched people's heartstrings,knowing that would make me feel less lonely." Michael started initially recording this song in December 1978. Song was released as a single in April 1980. So he was 20 when he first started recording it and 21 when that music video was produced.

The songwriter, Tom Bahler, wrote the song based on one of his own relationships. Many people thought it was about Karen Carpenter, whom Tom had been in a relationship with. But Tom has said that it's not about her.

This is my second favorite album from MJ. But it was also the second one I owned. Was given to me by my stepdad. He found it at a garage sale fro 25 cents. He had one as well and I would listen to it so he got me own. I still listen to it quite often. A beautiful album all the way through

It was written by a producer who was singing about his own life ....but Quincy Jones had it for four yrs gave it to M.J and because of its sensitivity he said Michael cried in each take ....but the rest is history re sing by 40 different singers made Top Ten or 100 in many countries.... I can't remember guy who wrote it but look up History behind This song says it all ....God bless you Michael its the emotion he felt for reals

It was said that MJ had to do many takes because he was crying during the filming of this video. You can tell he was about to because he was trying to cover his eyes in the beginning and at the end when he sang "Mmm. Hmm."

YO JAYY: For me I was 8 and hard to control. I never paid attention to my single mum. We were so poor all our clothes were donated. For 2 years (8-10) I wld sneak out not tell anyone (no mobiles bk then) I wld go wandering for hours. Mum must of been Worried Sick. 1983 13th May (2 years later) I lost her for good. This record is so deep its Damaging. Like yourself with REM "Evertbody hurts" although much later in life for you, the vibe is that personal.
@33yrs ild i net a bloke we later became friends. We were strangers HE told me things that wouldcame and pass I had no idea he was a clarevoyant at the time. He relayed a message to me saying "she feels guilty about the things you went through, and no matter what happens, she will always love you and always be with you. M medsage is WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO WE ARE IMMORTAL SPIRITS !
