      They actually had Game Boy/GBC, and GBA flashcarts back when those systems were released.
      I owned them back then, and still own them today.
      They were typically much more expensive, and required parallel port connections to flash linker (the part where the flashcart would dock in order to allow you to copy roms over).
      The one I own for the Game Boy is called the Doctor MDG3. It contains 64 Megbits of flash storage, and allows you to copy quite a few roms over which will then be selected from a list menu.
      The GBA flashcart I own is called the EZFlashII, it was actually very advanced for it's time, and even now has some features that aren't found on the Kirkzz carts, such as the ability to reset back to the menu with a button combination. It's a 1Gigabit flashcart, supports SRAM saves, and even RealTimeClock functionality.
      The emulators were available back then as well. I used the GB, SMS, NES, and even a very limited, but playable SNES emulator, which played a handful of games. Good times. :)

      I must have been living the dream back in the late 90s then. I had a flash cart with parallel port reader/writer, must have cost around $100. As well as loading roms, you could use it to rip the images off of the GB camera.

      Yes and no. I have an EverDrive GB and I find myself bouncing from game to game. As a kid I was forced to play games to mastery.

    I was just looking into the GB x7 and wanted to see how these devices work. After a fair amount of reading I check UA-cam and of course Lon has done a video of it and of course it answers all my questions. I don't know how he does it, but I swear he has a review of about every piece of tech I own or plan to buy

    If you are interested in playing your SP, Lon, you should really get the 101 advance SP - it has a much, much better screen.

      Lon.TV Apparently Retro-Bit is gonna be making a new version called the Super Retro Boy. It looks like an OG Gameboy, but it plays everything from GBA on down. Also, backlit screen is there, so no issue.

    I love your focus on which tech you choose to review. Part practical geek-tech, part nostalgic-gamer-geek tech. Right up my alley. Happy to support ya on Patreon. You are consistently one of the best tech reviewers on UA-cam, very professional, almost CNET/ZDNET like. ZDNET is that even a thing anymore? Still I appreciate the effort you put in, it shows and it pays off. Cheers.

    So I’m curious, could I theoretically use that cartridge on my Gameboy DMG (original Gameboy) and be able to side load GB Color/GBA games on it?
    Or does the cartridge in general not readable on a Gameboy DMG/Gameboy Pocket.. 😥😖

    does this have a timer? i mean in harvest moon at example. if you give your tool to a dwarf thing, he says you shall come in 24 hours to get your tool upgraded. and if the battery is empty, the timer doesnt continue, so thats why you will never ever get your tool back. how is this in this everdrive ? or in pokemon gold silver, does the clock work?

    Are the savegames saved in the sdcard or in the internal battery? The ezflash omega saves the games in the sdcard so you dont risk losingnyour saves when you need to change the internal batteries (theyre only used for the real time clock).

    The GB everdrive is an fantastic flash card, but the GB camera rom does not work properly because if i want to transfer foto’s from my real gb camera to the gb camera rom, it just will not save them permanently.
    Also 1 homebrew game i tryed does not work,because after loading it into the memory, it does not pass the startup screen,all i get is a blank screen but maybe i have to try the ‘load only’ option to change some settings for that individual game to get it work.

    Hello. On a different video of yours, I asked about a good micro sd card for the GBA Everdrive x5. Your advice was appreciated, I just wanted too also ask that I heard that the card shouldn't be class 10 cards, rather class 3-5 or something. I'm also debating on getting a 32gb or a 16gb. What do you think? It's just I know those games aren't very large. Thanks

      Majoras If you wanna play on original hardware that means you have to deal with at some original hardware limitations. I feel like emulation for the GB family is good enough to not need to carry around a device specifically for GB games but thats just me. I rather carry around one of the many devices that can play GB games and much more. I totally understand that some people want to play GB games on a real GB tho.

    • @_Majoras

      yes but other flashcarts do have savestate support? also, generally i agree with you about the all in one device its why i love my gpd xd, gcw etc. but android doesn't have much for gb palette customizing so i tend to just play on pc or a real gb

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 7 років тому

      Ease of use seems quite same as of 2.01 version EZ-Flash IV firmware. The PC client isn't necessary anymore, the cart does all it needs, SDHC slot too and the emulators are supported too, tho I think this is the only case on new firmware where you'll need the client, as the cart doesn't patch .NES files for example.
      Sure it's quicker, that's one thing I saw. But the EZ-Flash's speed isn't horrible at all, not counting 1st boot without patched game. Any other launch is a lot faster, also you can get some games on the NOR storage for instant load.
      The real big advantage over the EZ-Flash would be the RTC clock chip that the EZ-Flash lacks. I would go further to say the Supercard Mini SD, the cheapest flash cart you can find, is also worth it's (small amount of) money, but I wouldn't go all the way spending 2~3x the EZ-Flash's price on an Everdrive.

    • @Xenethra
      @Xenethra 7 років тому

      Everdrive GBA has more features, and until recently you had to patch games to work on the EZ Flash IV. Not to mention failure rates.

      괴ᄌ the thing is pirating games that are no longer sold doesn't really hurt as the money is going to some random ebay seller who is charging way too much not the dev, for recent software I would never pirate it because I can buy it and support the development of future versions, but for old software that is no longer sold I can buy it and support some scalper on ebay or I can simply download it online
