The base and the sound quality in general just could not be topped by anybody else’s version in my opinion! I love Magnavox console, stereos!!

I have that same identical 1968 Magnavox stereo imperial but apparently they must’ve made that model in two versions, I don’t have the Eight track tape deck in mine! Everything else is a Identical! There’s something very important the reason your remote might not be working is that you have to turn on the switch for the remote on the back center bottom of your stereo, did you do that? If the switch is turned off your remote will not work! Is your switch turned on?
I have a model similar to yours... sadly I picked it up off the curb...has the remote and mics etc... these were the top of the line back in the day .... the R2R is a panasonic ... your rewind needs a belt is all...
I have the same console with remote but no tape. I need to replace the two main filter caps on the power supply but can't find them. They are 2000 mfd and 50 volt. Sounds good but has a loud hum. All working

have this same unit w/ optional reel-to-reel. My remote didn't work also. Took it to a vintage repair shop and asked them to do everything. They couldn't figure out the remote unit. Repair shop declined to replace any caps in the preamp or the main amp. They felt they all worked fine and were within specs. I asked for a set of the 4 electrolytic capacitors on that unit when I picked it up. I removed and installed new ones myself (with the help of a Sams Photofact). Cleaned the rotating wheel contact surface under the paper cover and reassembled. It all works great: on/off, volume adjust, tone arm activation and skip to next record.
On these consoles, the "phantom" remote uses an air bellows and a pair of whistles. Both buttons press the bellows, but only one ultrasonic whistle is sounded when you press the button. Most common failure of the remote system is failed electrolytic caps in the remove receiver assembly.
those panasonic reel 2 reels need the belts changed for the rewind to work... very simple to do... just pull the cover off of it and the belts are right there...funny I have one from 67... and the positions of the controls are different than yours... my function control is in the center of all the controls...and the timbre /off is at the top. I understand these are rare to find seeing they were big $$$$$ back in the day... over 1K.... heck that was half a new car back then...
I have a '68 RCA and need to replace the needle. I have only done so on my 70's & 80's arms, and this one looks different. Need to find the correct needle first, in case you know of anyplace that is good with archaic stuff like that. Thanks.
Have you tried aiming the remote at the front center panels (the ones that look like doors) instead of at the phonograph itself? The one unit like this I saw, the remote would not work unless aiimed at the front panel. The remote sounded just like a little whoosh of air, and that sound (or I suspect an ultrasound) is what made the tuner change and etc.
@ducklandwikeno The "phantom" remote on these Imperials were not electronic at all. When you pressed a button, you compressed a bellows, which in term forced air through an ultra-sonic whistle. Which whistle received airflow depended on which button you pressed. Thankfully they are tune-able.
Nice Magnavox! I never saw one with a tape recorder. Very cool! Boy, does it sound good! I have been told that Magnavox made the best equipment and was top choice. I own a 1966 Magnavox Astro Sonic. Purchased it on Ebay. Only had to put a needle in it. Works well. And looks great. I listen to Jazz almost every night.
i bought a few sony reel to reel decks and the rewind on them didn't work when they arrived so i took the idlers off and cleaned the shafts and re-lubed them with super-tech and the rewind function returned to normal
This was back when you got all the accessories you needed when you purchased something. Probably came with a blank Magnavox tape and maybe even a demonstration record. Now when you buy something all the little extra's cost you more money and usually have to be ordered online.
+avioncamper Actually this is the 150 watt version (older IHF standard) and passed the $1000 price point when it was new. The version with reel to reel delete was just under $1000. They are amazing consoles with a far better sound than the non-Imperial consoles. Most people have no idea Magnavox built such a high-end console.
The fanciest one I have is the 1965 100 watt "Sorrento" with the same type of tuner controls (without remote), and a foot shorter. Yours is the "Aegean Classic" I believe. If I ever find one like yours and the price is right, it's mine! There was one in a VNA Thrift Shop in French Provincial, but I had no way to get it.
hello there I had a reel to reel identical to this one in the console you have it has a belt going from a pully to the supply table and the belt broke so that is why the rewind does not work the othe play and fast forward are all idler wheel driven so you need a belt and it will be perfect it is a great little machine and I enjoyed the entire video it was great
I dont know if you fixed it , but i'll try to help you if you need help . Im betting you can get this working right . Its a clicker style remote , try two spoons . It works on the same therory as your remote . you can clean the sensor in front too from dust . or it could be the circurt for the remote . But to fix that you'll need the schematic for mangavox Imperial with your model .

After waiting 16 months, I finally got my unit like the one in the video repaired. All I can say is it was well worth the wait and the sound is unbelievable. Money well spent.

I bet its the remote thats not working . If I were you I would look at the capsaitor in it if there's a battrie in it replace it .I almost betting it not the sensor on your console . It could be but more likely to be the remote not working for some reason . Check for caps in it plus the battries in it also .
Thanks for posting such a detailed video. Too bad the remote control didn't work. I remember seeing these sets when they were new in department and music stores. These are awesome sets. I always wanted an Imperial but went the separate component route in the early 70's. By the way, it appears the tape deck was made by Panasonic for Magnavox.
Ha Ha . I have news for you . Those consoles never did work right even when they were new. The remote sucked we had the top of the line stereo with the tv from magnavox like in 1968 or 1969. The remote we never used becasue it didnt work and the tv repair guy was always trying to fix some thing on that set. It was an amusing piece of furniture if it only worked right!

I think the rewind belt and/or idler are worn or need oiling

Wow, 4 horns, 15' woofers and 100 watts, it cost $850.00 new, I looked it up on the Magnavox Yahoo fan site.

What is the model number and do you know what style this is? I have an identical one in mahogany but it doesn't have reel to reel. It's remote also.

Not illogical at all. Hip-Hop (and even Ozzy) just sounds so 'wrong' on a '68 Magnavox.
