Now there's a quality stereo worth restoring. Ahh, germaniums..they love to grow tin whiskers and short to case, which is where the leakage is usually derived from. But $10 a pop? Wow! I'm hoping you only have a couple of bad ones, because that could get expensive real quick. Looking forward to part II
I have one of those Astro-Sonic 20's and have the opposite problem with FM after a recap. It pulls in so many local stations in that I need to turn off AFC for clean audio - the AFC is just too wide/strong. I had to walk away from it due to other projects, but I keep wondering if I am expecting too much. I think to myself that here in Fort Wayne (where I am, and it was designed) we had all of 2 FM stations on the dial, and later a third one came along. We were in an AM word. I'm about to rebuild the Micromatic and call it done, but I'm not happy. I have an Imperial in the next room along the same outside wall, and it has much better selectivity - and I have not recapped it yet. I look forward to part 2!
I'm getting 0 on all 3 leads of the coil. The B and E terminals of the transistor have around 2.5 and 2.8 volts on them, with C having 0. connecting an external antenna helps a little.
I'm literally watching this video on a TV which is positioned on top of a Magnavox Astro-Sonic, but one with side firing speakers, and forward tweeters, and with more modern style caps in them.
The higher powered top end models had a seperate amp/power supply chassis. The lower and mid line models had the amp, tuner, and PS on a single chassis.
I just LOVE re-capping those astro-sonics! When I had my shop, I had a guy who collected astro-sonic consoles (He had 25 of them!!!) And he had me restore every one for him! It was fun and easy! Kinda curious, though, WHY didn't you recap the tuner board?
I was just looking closer at the schematic and notice where the -15V enters the bottom of L3. Also notice that the bottom of L3 goes to ground; which, does not make any sense.
just curious about your reference to a local parts house - all i have here is a radio Shack which is a lot better than nothing but they sure don't cater to vintage electronics!
Hello , I watch your videos quite often . I have a magnavox console from the mid 70s , that has a turntable in the lower part of the cabinet on drawer slides . I need to work on the turntable and can't figure out how it comes out . Any help would be appreciated . THANKS , KG
Awesome video! I'm currently recapping the exact same chassis. However I need help identifying a few capacitors. Specifically C601, C614, C606, C610 Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Hey radiotvphononut I have the same exact record player that I purchased last year at a garage sale for 54 bucks a few houses down from me. I'm very happy with it now that I finally found a replacement needle and was able to fix the stereo problem with the record player (had the connectors in the tone arm on the wrong pins). I'm still however having a problem with the knobs making lots of static noise. Now I know nothing about taking apart stereos and fixing them, but can I just take the knobs off and spray the control cleaner in there? Or do i need to take off the chassey? I'm just afraid i might break something. I'd love to change the capacitors but i'm not sure i am qualified enough to do that. Thanks for the great videos!
Crappy electrolytic caps in particular, I hauled two flat screen monitors home and guess what failed, the Crapxon or other Chicom/Taiwan mystery brand caps? Both were from 2005-06 so I guess the expectation was that you would buy a new computer every 5 years so the monitor didn't need to live any longer then that. Now I hauled a Samsung plasma panel home free with an RCA radio I bought, apparently those are notorious fro crappy solder joints and bad caps, so I will see what I can do with it.
I have this exact model and am trying to repair it, but can't seem to find the schematic for the chassis itself, R20414 (same as yours). Did you happen to find that anywhere and if so would you mind passing it along?
Same model I have and I have had no luck running down the schematic either. I recapped the electolytics less the big metal can. Deoxit D5 the controls including the elusive balance control. Still have noise, and crackling on the left channel. May be the multi-section can or a noisy transistor or resistor, but hard to run down without a schematic. I can check the can by taking it out of circuit and using my Heathkit IT-28. Help someone please, it is too beautiful to recycle.
Hi friend, great project... So, I have a Magavox Astro-Sonic console stereo. Model No. 1P3763 and I've already changed the needle but it still making a lot of noises in the speakers... there are two blue pieces like battery before the speakers, what is this?
If I'm understanding you correctly, they are probably capacitors - a crude form of crossover to send higher frequencies to the tweeters and the lower frequencies to the woofers.
Mine doesn't have the bolts or screws holding the radio in. I can find no sensible way to remove the radio. I'm assuming it lifts out from the top but a more in-depth explanation on the video would have been appreciated. IP3623 Run 2 Mag Astrosonic
I'm bringing my dad's Astro-Sonic home this week. It's in good working condition, but I'd like it gone through. Can anyone recommend a technician in the Charleston area or within a day's travel? Thanks.
Larry Shaver where are you? Can I please pick your brain bro? I'm stuck on my 1965 Magnavox - I got lights but no sound - checked connections - don't see anything loose.
Damien Maloney I tried electrical contact spray - which most people claim will fix most issues - still have problems. Going to test each capacitor - will let you know if I find a bad one and which one it was.
Maybe the tin whiskers thing is overblown, but the unreliability of germanium transistors isn't....in my experience, around 50% of the equipment I've repaired had at least one bad germanium.
hi good video! but the only question i have is after watching dozens of these repair vids is the part where you actually install the capacitor. how do you do that??? do you use a soldering gun or what? i am new to this area of restoration.please help and thanks for the video!
I am in California and I have a Magnavox Micromatic record changer from a 1963 Astro Sonic that is producing distortion out of both channels. It probably needs to have the cartridge changed and a general overall. Can I send it to you to work on? Thank you.
Unplug the unit from the wall, remove the back, follow the RCA signal cables from the phonograph to where they plug into the amplifier. The aux jacks are right below that. These were actually put there for the optional reel to reel and were not intended for the end user. The record output jacks are below the aux input jacks.
My Volume Control is bad on my Magnavox Astro Sonic 1965 model . I cleaned the volume control many time and its the same results always . The control gets scratchy after six months or so .I should replace all the caps in her too It also has the old nichcon caps in her . I need to find the right replacement caps for her . Also My FM Tuner is messed up too , No stereo indicator light on it when changing the channels on the tuner .
i own a 68 magnavox console an it has a poor FM connection too. im fairly new to the radio/turntable repair community and i have the most issues finding capacitors an transistors, i am open to any suggestions of good websites to get hold of these parts
We just bought a 1P3822 Astro-Sonic. The right balance doesn't work. After looking into it, I found the Internal/External speaker switch was broken underneath and had been wired back together. The non-working side was the part that was bot working. I tried jumping the wires with no success. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Can a replacement part be found for it, or will I need to build my own (not my wheelhouse)? Thanks!!
Hi, I was just given a console, with record player and radio. Plays great for about 30 minutes, then makes a loud noise. Could it be that the tubes get too hot? Any suggestions on what I need to look for or where I can get parts? I live in Orlando, FL. I did remove the back, it had about an inch of dust, that I removed, played a little longer after that.
Would a Bad cap, cause the aAM Radio to not work? I did not see any on my Astrosonic in that area, mine is the 66' . Any Idea on how to access the under part of the turntable, every other Astro I have seen so far does not have the full back of counsol, mine does it is 100% original and in near mint cond.
I'm having a major problem with my 1963 Astro-Sonic. I've gone through a complete replacement of all electrolytic caps and I am still getting a low hum on the machine when it is turned on. The volume does not effect the hum. Any suggestions on what could be causing this? I've read about changing the caps in the power supply on the unit. Is the power supply the black brick that sits on the side of the amp? I've changed every cap I know of on the chassis itself. Please help! Thanks.
If crappy components don't kill modern electronics, lead-free solder will. I can just see someone trying to restore a modern ChinaDung flatscreen TV to operating condition in 50 years - it ain't gonna happen! I may be off my rocker; but, I think it's all a conspiracy so that stuff will die in short order and keep the junk makers in business constantly selling people crap.

Yeah, people are afraid of lead while being poisoned by pesticides and herbicides. And made ill by contaminated food, e-coli and Listeria . But be afraid of lead.
If it costs more then about $20 to $30 in parts to fix it Mr Korean plasma is getting the aussie50 patented MOT treatment with a chicken stick, possibly followed by an EOL inspired by Mr Shango066 involving petroleum byproducts.
I know that the stupid P.C lead free solder that the E.U mandated can cause tin whiskers, which is why it's banned in aerospace electronics, but it's more often that it results in cracked and other defects in solder joints. Yep, that will help the environment, make the electronics Co's use shit solder so more TVs and stereos end up in the dump. RoHS, yet another wonderful idea from Europe!
Use DeOxit or QD Electronics Cleaner from the Auto Parts store or Walmart. DeOxit is more expensive, but the QD cleaner has worked just as well for me.
I'm impressed by your esoteric expertise in a long forgotten field. Bravo!

I have one of these from the 50's and a mid 60's one like this that with need rewired,.. I'm glad I'm finally finding resources for this.
I just bought a receiver like this ,seeing this video before gave me confidence to know I can do anything t may need
Great Job on the repairs. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the next video. Take care.
I looked in Sams and there are two more photofacts covering the R204 series chassis. They are 697-10 and 796-5.
I wish we HAD a local parts house.
Another old classic!!

I am trying to fix almost the same exact model and still looking for Schematics
Yep, you nailed it.
I'm getting 0 on all 3 leads of the coil. The B and E terminals of the transistor have around 2.5 and 2.8 volts on them, with C having 0. connecting an external antenna helps a little.

great project, that thing will sound great, what does it need.
The higher powered top end models had a seperate amp/power supply chassis. The lower and mid line models had the amp, tuner, and PS on a single chassis.
yes KLH speakers have a very nice sound
i saw your post on facebook re: the webcor record player a few days ago
I just LOVE re-capping those astro-sonics! When I had my shop, I had a guy who collected astro-sonic consoles (He had 25 of them!!!) And he had me restore every one for him! It was fun and easy! Kinda curious, though, WHY didn't you recap the tuner board?
Shango066 worked on one similar to that and replaced all the capacitors on the stereo fm decoder board and got the stereo light to come on again
I had an all-in-one console like that for a few years back in the 70s. They're great but can be a pain in the ass if you have to move.
I was just looking closer at the schematic and notice where the -15V enters the bottom of L3. Also notice that the bottom of L3 goes to ground; which, does not make any sense.

Mine has changer, preamp / radio chassis, then, on the bottom, a power amp chassis...yours combines those functions.
Awesome video! I'm currently recapping the exact same chassis. However I need help identifying a few capacitors. Specifically C601, C614, C606, C610 Any info would be greatly appreciated!
I discovered that after looking closer at the schematic.

What you're saying is they can drift downward too?

I have same chassis where can I get schematic need to fix
Wow, Magnavox jumped into transistors pretty early.
I had the same problem with my console from Magnavox . I own a model a little different from yours . Mine was made about 1967
Do you have a schematic for a 1966 MAgnavox Astro Sonic Console stereo? I love your videos!!

how do you clean the controls on these things?
Boy I wish a guy was close by to fix my magnavox. I'm pulling my hair out.
i could come and help you but i'm afraid i'm 2 years too late
Larry Shaver where are you? Can I please pick your brain bro? I'm stuck on my 1965 Magnavox - I got lights but no sound - checked connections - don't see anything loose.
i couldn't tell you what the problem even could be
I know this is late but I have the same issue. Lights and no sound.

that is very similar to the receiver i bought recently
Who is this guy and can I ship mine to get it worked on?

Im looking for a needle for my Magnavox IP3631 turn table, anyone know where I can get one? Theres not one in the arm so I have no reference numbers
I have the radio from one like that ,the furniture was crashed but the radio was fine ...
I need someone that can repair an am/fm tuner. Please list a number or address. thanks
Those KLH speakers were supposed to be decent for what they were.
I have a perfect shape unit in MA. Anyone interested? Think its the same model.
I have a nice record / am/fm / tv if you can boil it you can have it
