    Limiting the explorable systems to 5 is honestly a great idea, especially if they're focusing on making those systems more unique and different to each other.

      I dont think they are limiting themselves to 5 by any means. I think they are just goal marking for 1.0 and getting the expectation out that they will never hit 100.

      @@dark_winter8238 yea a 100 systems would take 30 years. keep in mind many systems will be simply asteroid fields, 1 or 2 planets ect ect so some can be build very fast as "fluff".

      They aren't limiting themselves to 5 systems. That's how many systems will be completed come 1.0. There are plenty of systems to be added beyond that.

    The Genesis presentation was hugely important because Genesis (Geology and erosion especially) will enable a lot of gameplay -- especially around mining, science, exploration, and data/info running. And, this really brings StarEngine much closer to the level of Unreal 5. With Server Meshing, that gives CIG a big leg up on Unreal Engine, which is not due to have server meshing until Unreal 6 (multiple years away still).

      @@Apav1x No most likely not. A lot of MMO's have server meshing. The idea isn't that new it's just that their server meshing is STATIC. SC aims to have DYNAMIC meshing which is a whole new level of new and complicated. Unless they stole IP or had a breakthrough I doubt they can make something off the shelf that fast when SC literally has a separate team working on the net code. Which this team is literally their own company lol. Also as someone said, I doubt at the scale and ambition that SC has. With PES, shards, seamless transitions etc.

    i remember in 2014 when I was undergoing my space arc I was so hyped for start citizen(i had a del laptop) and couldn't wait for it to fully release. now start citizen is just a thing I see every so often in the background

      I truly believe 42 is done but 42 and SC is so tied together that both must perform up to standards ppl will accept. If 42 releases before SC is ready, 42 will bring ppl over to SC and see it broken and be turned off. I think theyre holding 42 til SC is 1.0. Imo

    What i love from that con was this time most of it was stuff what is already in the graybox. But i also cannot ignore the momentary situation of the PU. Yes be came far the last years but atm most i or most of us wish. Finaly stable and reliable servers.

    I just cant believe this will be a full fleshed out game. I hope to play it someday. When I was a teen Wingcommander games were just the pinnacle of computer games fun. Microprose flight sims and Wing Commander series were just awesome.

      ​​​​@@superbadisfunmy It's trying to be an MMO afterall, the only difference is due to the nature of the project they announced their intentions for a lot of its post release content without even realizing they would be post release content at the time. That's like if Blizzard laid out all of WoW's gameplay features and content they wanted to add from Vanilla to The War Within before release, but didn't realize at the time how little would actually be in the vanilla game and worked on adding them all throughout the next 20 years.

      @@th3orist It likely is 5+ years away, but at least we have a concrete idea based on the modern game for once instead of having to go by conceptual design documents from 10 years ago. This was needed.

    I'm happy they are finally drawing a line in the sand on what 1.0 will be, but it's just...a lot? It looked amazing on their slideshow (CiG's expertise) but it didn't give me a "3 years away milestone" vibe, it's giving 2030-ish release date ones, which is just so deflating, it looks so much farther away than my worst predictions.

      We need to remember that more than half of the resources were allocated to SQ42. I'm guessing we'll definitely see way more progress on SC this upcoming year.

      interesting, for me it was the exact opposite. after last year's i expected more. to me it felt like a letdown, especially the "we are confident to bring the game to you in 2026" was a gut punch.
      when they said last year "we enter polishing phase" i honestly expected a release date for early to mid 2025 this citcon.
      when chris says stuff like "we are confident that..." then you can be SURE that its NOT the year he picks. So make it 2027 - at best.

    21:50 this is exactly what I expected. How long did Cyberpunk take after release to get to the state it was meant to be at launch? What about No Man’s Sky? Or any other game that released broken in recent years? I think a lot of us have been conditioned to think polish is the quick part. Polish is difficult and takes a lot of time. Most AAA games aren’t given that time. 2026 actually has me very hopeful the game will come out in a great, and playable state. If they really are in the polish phase, then I’m glad they’re taking their time.

      I get why people are upset bout the release date but from the live demo it is clear the game still needs time in the oven.

      Exactly. Back when a game studio like Blizzard delayed release for years to make certain they released games in a high level of polish they were rightly lauded for it. That level of polish takes time and they were unapologetic for that. CIG needs to adopt that mindset with SQ42, which will be its first title release and will set the standard moving forward.

      Can’t polish that opening story arc. Every action movie trope was hit, nothing was unexpected, from the captain taking someone under their wing to the gruff pilot who needs you to prove themself before they acknowledge you. i really hope the rest of the story is better. I really enjoyed freelancer, but then i also used to enjoy trying to get enough free ram on the PC so i could load a mouse driver.

    This citizencon had a whole different vibe to last years. Last year it felt like a "I told you so" for the haters. Like "we're feature complete for SQ42 and here is what Star Citizen is for new people and everything you see youll be getting within a year" like both are ready to come out. This year we found out both are still years away and didnt say anything about getting any of it soon lol. Bit of a buzz kill in comparison. However I still enjoyed it, the org features and clothes over underarmour ive been waiting for a while. 1.0 was great but we all know its just so far away.

    The invulnerable shield is fought over but you can build a shield gen on yoru base without that but that's vulnerable to a ground assault

    Something I noticed that no one's pointed out yet: zero ships went on sale for crafting. Not one.
    CIG doesn't pass up an opportunity to sell ships, so I think we're further away from crafting and base building than we're lead to believe.

    When they were talking Orange text markers it was my understanding that it was 1) an Org/Alliance war enemy, but 2) killing them would result in a crime stat, thus orange instead of red. Love your SC videos.

    20:32 technically, if you analyze the recording they uploaded afterwards, the gameplay and cinematic times are about 50/50. I think when it's released, people will spend more time exploring the ship before the battle and also just taking in the game as a whole, which would tip the balance even more that way. If you were to rush through the non-turret gameplay it would definitely feel pretty heavy on the cinematics. On that subject, the first bit of gameplay in the turret kind of left me a bit disappointed and it felt like an arcade shooter. But as the battle progressed, it became much more interesting eventful, I do hope they find a way to make it feel less "on rails" in that aspect though. Either way, very impressive showing for SQ42 IMO and I am excited for 2026.

    I hope they give reason to explore those new biomes like gathering ingredients from the swamp etc because they look great. I hope they really amp up the sounds for them too, ambient sounds from bugs and birds, wind etc.

    the LOD on the swamp assets really shows how far theyve come with genesis. some of areas in game are really showing their age.

    The 2026 release date was such a letdown that my brain instantly convinced me we were currently in 2025 so that it was next year. I was like "Sweet! Next year baby!" and it was actually minutes later when I realized no, it was not in fact coming next year. Pushing it further away yet again. :(

    The features and technologies shown are very impressive but the big question is when are some of them be implemented? Be mindful that the demo shown are offline and will vastly differ when implemented for online.

    22:19 There could be couple reasons to push SQ42 to 2026.
    1. Server meshing wasnt ready in time which pushed SC 1.0 further away - having good running SC expirience is good to keep new sq42 fans in universe. (im not saying sc 1.0 in 2026, but less buggy expirience).
    2. GTAVI and Squadron 42 console release - no one wants to compete with this monster.
    This 2 things by itself could pushed 2025 release hopes.
    So hopefully extra 12 months gives enough time to polish SQ42 up to RDR2 level.

    What do you mean Castra looks final? Those assets are literally whitebox (at best). They only look half decent because they are MASSIVE and FAR AWAY. But if you look in the background, they only had like literally 2 rock assets and were reusing them at different orientations and sizes, and the city itself was SMOOTH AS FUCK. They still have to go through ACTUAL whitebox, to finalize geometry, and then greybox, and then actual art passes, lighting, sound, etc, and then it can APPROACH final. The shit you saw was ABSOLUTELY concept meshes created by a CONCEPT ARTIST lmao.
    That's like comparing the work a modder does to an actual DLC released for a video game. They are not comparable things, and the one only looks good because it's the work of a single person looked at while you squint heavily, while the other one is literally millions of dollars of labour-hours (for even indie games, frankly; or many tens or hundreds of millions for a AA-AAA).

    I am glad that the game is still years away. This looks incredible and should be done right. Also, PC hardware hopefully will catch up a little, so I'm not cooking my CPU every time I go outside of the major outposts lmao.

    It was announced 'Feature Complete' in Q4 of 2023. They say they plan to release in 2026. As long as they release before Q4 of 2026 then it will be less than 3 years. I personally believe they will aim for release at Invictus Launch Week (last week in May) as ILW is the lore date for joining the military, it was made for the Squadron 42 marketing campaign. If so then it would be 2 years and 7 months since the 'feature complete' announcement.

      I think most people did. They did themselves a huge disservice saying it was in polishing last year. Probably unintentionally, but that mislead many people into thinking it was coming much sooner.

    I play for one month out of every year for about hundred hours since 2017 and have spent around $200 on Star Citizen. I have more than gotten my money's worth in game time and every year I'm blown away by their newest tech.

    I think this game will be our “Ready Player One” once we have VR goggles and GPUs that can really handle this stuff, full body suits with ForceFeedback and floors you can “walk/run” on, biggest respect to Lanny Smoot at Disney.
    Hope we get that in the next 5 years :)

    It does not indicate that they are marked hostile by an allied org.
    The orange name tag indicates that they are marked as hostile to you or your org, but that they are illegal to attack. They are a legal player with no wanted status.

    Ive never been so excited for procedural generation and I can't believe I really just said that after certain games have made it a sour subject. The whole planet system is incredible and makes total sense. I guess if you really think about it, most things can be calculated with math.
    Its to the point where if you cut down trees during basebuilding, something different will grow because you removed the shade. Naturally, the plant that grows well in the shade will now be overtaken by something that grows well in the sun. This is groundbreaking stuff

      I think it's all up to how procgen is used. With SC their building modular assets that when combined can be anything from a small outpost to a decent-sized town. All are designed to work together. And I'm willing to bet that generally, one mining outpost will look like another. And with planet generation, they're trying to go with a high-level systematic approach. If done right, when you get into the weeds (pun intended) everything will fit right. Temps will probably depend on distance to the system's star, and the star type. From there, combined with moisture levels, you'll get different biomes. I guess we'll only really get planets with a lot of greenery and livable atmo in the Goldilocks zone. With Bethesda's use of procgen, it's like they just said hey, this planet will be this biome, and we have a few handcrafted POIs. Divide the planet into cells, and sprinkle the POIs around each cell. And have all the loading screens, all of them.

    I think "less repetition" is the key word / turn of the phrase, there. Some stuff will still have that same-ish feel, but at a way higher variety and uniqueness compared to earlier games doing such.

    I appreciate your coverage of SC in particular because it doesnt feel biased like a lot of other coverage.
    These recap videos are also a great way to share some cool stuff with friends without having to sigt though 16 hours of streams or whatever. You do good work with your editing.
    I'll just say that as a vacker for 5 years now, ive been tricked too many times to get excited. I hope this all comes true but i wont defend promises anymore. I am wxcited to play 4.0 myself and judge that experience instead

    With crafting I'm keen to start an org that is purely a pizza delivery service. It could be cool being in a cave on Daymar or even floating somewhere in the Nyx system and you can order a slice and have it there in under 30mins or it's free.

    None of these things should be bragged about by a game that has been in development for 12 years. Look terrain deco that spawns randomly, look a social interface, look a crafting interface... 12 YEARS.

    Sometime in 2026 is disappointing. I thought for sure we'd get a specified quarter within 2025. I can't help but feel that sometime in 2026 will become sometime in 2027 after a lengthy period of radio silence.

      Honestly from last year's teaser trailer to this years full on gameplay trailer...with some bugs. A 2026 release is very viable my issue is the fact they tied SQ42 to 1.0 release.

    It was cool to see how many features they still want to add to the game.
    But today, without all these, it runs like a patato .. and most is static info except for the player position, player inventory, ship list, ship position, missile and ammo, ship cargo boxes, some dropped items (but only for a while), mission status, ship and player status and a few other parameters that need to be captured by the server and distributed to max 100 other players.
    So with all the new features, the servers will also need to keep track of the improved VOIP and FOIP, server chats, friend lists, commerce, progression, blueprints, classes, all the player made buildings scattered everywhere, stations, station power, station and base shields, stations attached to other stations, attached to a huge ship manufacturing plant, org management improved economy, guild reputation, material quality, item quality, gear status and decay, food with different properties, tier based weapons and ships, maelstrom destruction, new weather, rain, storms, lightning that hurts whatever it touches, fire propagation, more dense planets, new global illumination, floating wood, dynamic audio, doppler effect, sound speed and delays, atmosphere density, new fauna, engineering components, component status, blueprints, the return of the beacons, base building, construction vehicles and drone management, ressource tracking while building, survey information, base power management, base acces management, roads, base defences (inside and outside), mobile base/factories, stealth mechanics, fuses, door keys, scanning, object scanning, object disabling, location mapping, rescue missions, raids, defense missions, bribe system, better AI, towing, refueling, refining, ship claims and ownership, dead man switch tracking, contraband scanning, new claim timers, shuttles, security response based on location risk level, insurance and warranty tracking, and last but not least, improved dirt.
    All this for 1.0
    I ordered my quantum computer .. and will send a mail to CIG to do the same ..

      well one of the major factors leading to it running like a potato and why alot of the features aren't in the game is "server meshing", Almost all the features require server meshing to be working smooth and efficiently. It only just hit ptu and thus might take another year or 2 until it's in a proper state ( it might even require better real life tech for the servers and internet speeds) but once the meshing is sorted i guarantee we will see alot of features coming faster then ever.

      @maverick9334 Ha the magical CIG term. Do you even know what it really is under the hood? Did you know that Chris is the only one using this definition? Do you also know that he heard for the first time while he was working as a joung lad for Ultima Online and since then it is stuck in his head and now in your?
      Why do you think all missions are deactivated during tests? Creating different shards based on location is a good thing and it can help with performance. Instancing uses it very well. But once you start to add a huge amount of data that needs to be traked not only one server, but synchronised between 4 .. 6
      Well .. we'll see if their coding is on point.

    Great recap mate. It’s so exciting for what’s coming but the lack of clarity on any thing was worrying. The squadron release date makes me think everything else we saw makes it at least 7 years out. I guess the game and teams will grow so hopefully they can get through things a bit quicker…

    2026 was really hard for me. I've worked with dev teams for almost 20 years now. I really cannot fathom why they need essentially 2+ years to optimize and polish a game that was presented in a near finished state two years in a row. Something doesn't quite add up. Maybe the second half of the game isn't up to the level of what we saw this year, but another 1+ years to launch? Where is the velocity?

      Hit me hard too. Hyping everyone up with 'feature complete' last year was unintentionally a huge misdirection. Feature complete just means all necessary features are implemented. It doesn't mean they're working as intended and bug free. It's the minimum viable product. If they shipped it at 'feature complete' it would be *technically* what they promised to deliver.
      Polishing is a subjective metric. It's like editing a movie. A perfectionist could spend their entire life doing it and never release the product. Which is, unfortunately, what Chris Roberts is. But thankfully he has gotten to the point in his life where he realizes he actually has to ship a product. No repeats of his ouster at Digital Anvil before the release of Freelancer this time. Hopefully.
      Bug fixing a game at this scale is a huge endeavor. They'll spend 18 months on it and still miss some game breaking bugs.

    I think the biggest issue for Roberts and overall his biggest failure was tying SQ42 to the PTU/Star Citizen. In reality Squadron 42 should have released on its stand alone with Spectrum being the Multi-player function for the game itself. At least this would have given Roberts more then enough good will as he was able to deliver a game and his vision. At the same time Spectrum coming out would have by far filled what was by far the most anemic FPS offerings in a decade. Battlefield 2042 and Call of Duty (w/ Warzone) has become a massive disappointment to FPS fans that Spectrum's Star Marine and squadron battle would have in effect push the FPS genre to higher heights.
    At the same time I can understand why SQ42 was held back until 1.0 Beta was ready for launch due to assets being developed and co-mingled (ease of intergration) allowed for players of SQ42 to enter SC without little to no need for a tutorial...as the game would serve as a giant story tutorial for that side.
    On that issue....what is SC going to be...is it going to be Rust in space or a fleshed out MMO with zero aimless direction via sandbox. Again biggest issue is the overall identity of SC, is just that what does the game want to be.

    This was another "sandworm demo" year. I learned my lesson from the last one. The sandworm will eventually be a lot less cool than we thought and it is so far down the road we're going to meme this citizencon for many years to come and blame ourselves for drinking the hopium again.
    And no, I don't mean a literal sandworm. The sandworm is a metaphor for CIG showing stuff they will not build for years, and years, and years to come. They are a company that makes great videos but they suck at delivering anything in those videos.
