American/western developers will never get it. If they had just learned from the Japanese and their philosophy to creating games, they wouldn't suck so much. Case in point, Shigeru Miyamoto did an interview once where he was asked what the secret to a good game is. His response: "Of course game development is a business and profit is the goal, but if you focus on profit or a single experience, the game fails. The goal should be to create an experience that is fun, tells a good story and allows the player to explore the worlds you create. Much like a child, fishing or running around, bug catching." When you look at Japanese development, they don't spend NEARLY AS MUCH on game development.🤷🏼♂️ They also don't belittle their fan base every chance they get and take responsibility for their failures.

I mean, there has been good games with those themes in mind. But, they are somewhat subtle not on your face deal. Nights in the Woods can be an example. At the same time having those themes doesn't automatically made it bad games, is just how they're handled that can be the issue. Pretty sure there's a crowd out there that would appreciate that, a good written game.

I had some really interesting insight recently, I was having lunch with our CEO (financial industry) and gaming came up. He said his friends were talking about the softening of the market making gaming a less attractive investment. A very long story short, after the conversation I realized he ABSOLUTELY could not understand the difference between why someone who like a single player experience over a free to play or live service. I tried to explain how the mechanics and structure are different but without experience as a gamer himself, it just didn’t seem like a huge difference from the consumer side, but way better from a financial side. Now thankfully he was just looking to invest but I’m telling you, he’s the exact type of person that’s getting hired on the money side of these games.
Here's an insight for you to counter him with next time. Money doesn't appear out of nowhere. If the games seem similar, but one is generating way more money, then it costs the user way more money, therefore the *value proposition* is ALOT WORSE. Would you want Porsche for three times the money of a Ferrari if it seems like they're the exact same vehicle?
Just like every movie I see It’s always investors or certain people who are focused more on the money than what something represents or does for people. We need to get these people out of our space They’ll ruin everything they touch Idk how Bully them online enough to leave Don’t give them money Ridicule them Something that’s gonna stick cuz I’m tired of it and I’m pretty sure everyone else is too they’re killing our favorite past time and we shouldn’t stand for it.
I’m working on a game with 4 guys. We had a release date of Jan 2025. Did a play test with some friends and they all gave us a list of what would be better off fixed or taken out. Release date is now Jan 2027. Did it suck? Yes. But we all agreed. Do it right the first time. Or not at all.
I'm assuming if it's a two year delay that this dev and the other guys are friends that work on this and hold down other jobs as well. I think in a way these types of devs will become more prevalent as Indies start from one or two passionate friends working on a small but beloved project.
Seriously. Most fans even give them at least 1 bad release until they start rethinking their devotion. Just look at Bioware. They had several terrible games but people still bought them way beyond what it would have been if any of these games had been from a different studio and only now is it really starting to taper off. Same for Bethesda and many more.
Unfortunately, most of the game industry has a severe skill issue, and coupled with a malignant ideology that has infested every strata of studios, it's no wonder they fail miserably.
AAA: Got told AAA: Immediately deflect to racism and misogyny accusation, with dozens of "Game journalist" defending them and tarnishing the competitions. Always
Amy Henning, writer of Legacy of Kain, Uncharted and The Last of Us just came out and said how to not feel like the industry is sexist if you're a woman: just make better work. Woman claimed she felt the same way as when she was asked how would she have felt if she hadn't had lunch or breakfast yesterday.
@Saint_Wolf_ people only ever liked the last of us for Joel and they killed him and they made ellie a les in the first game dlc so yeh the game should have been a one off story
@@thewheeldeal1678 The game should have been stripped off of Neil, he wrote that POS DLC, he solo lead and wrote part 2. Not Bruce nor Amy had any input on the second game, you know, the original masterminds of the game. In fact Nathan Drake had a daughter in the 4th game in direct contrast to Amy's wishes to have Nate have a son.
What is there more to say? These companies have the resources. Just use them to hire people who know what they’re doing, give them the incentives they need to stay, and don’t handicap them.
The last part there is what they can't or won't do. They have creatives, I've never met a dev who wasn't passionate about games or art. It's the fact they don't listen to those devs (or customers) and instead follow the slop formula pushed by their analysts and investors
@@Funko777agree, but sometimes it also comes down to the fact that some "devs" are unproffessional and more activist then a dev. Activists cant create they can only copy or destroy
@@SigfridSWESome of the best artists there were are activists. Ai Wei Wei, Banksy, and that’s just the modern day. The truth is simple. Gaming is being crippled at the top. Crappy pay. You guys remember the Blizzard working condition with a bunch of creepy dudes.
Reminds me of the Ori dev basically explaining how the creative process of making games is controlled chaos and you still need to be able to rein things in to make sure you don't lose focus during development.
Well there can still be truth to that platitude even if you are tierd of hearing it. There are a true problem with unproffessional devs that are more activists the creativs.
Helldivers 2, Space Marines 2, Black Myth Wukong, Baldur's Gate 3, all of these games were smash hits this year and my entire extended friend and associate circle bought these games without knowing anything about the studios or even playing any of the previous titles in the series, if they exist. The reason they succeed is because they're good games. The teams clearly narrowed in on the genre they were trying to portray and then focused into making a fun game. That's all that matters, not "safe, inclusive, diverse" boring games.
They're all perfectly inclusive and diverse too. BMW is a chinese game about chinese mythology so how diverse can it really be without losing authenticity anyway...?
@@shamanahaboolist Yeah, they are all actually diverse without trying to be. Which is what actual real life is. Just things and people being the thing and the people they are.
My man - Ghost Recon did not start out as a third-person action game. It was first-person and focused entirely on squad-level tactics in a single-player campaign where enemies would one-shot kill you, and squadmates would have perma-death if they died in a mission.
3:58 being a 40k game is a blessing and a curse. You can address a massive fanbase that hasn't been oversaturated with games yet. But get loredrops or connections wrong and it all goes up in flames
When you pay a license fee make a product for a dedicated fanbase, you aren't 'buying' a fanbase. You just got yourself an army of critics. Make something they like, and they will love you. Make something they dislike, they well let you know.
Nah, a big AAA title like space marine will have GW's IP managers dedicating considerable time to make the content consistent with existing lore. In fact I'd go so far as to say that the recent 40k titles like Daemonhunters, Rogue Trader and SM2 all have excellently done lore, no doubt it is all checked by those IP managers. There is even a financial incentive for them to do so, because a ton of things you see in SM2 are essentially product placement for their tabletop models. Not to mention you could just post lore questions on various forums like /r/40klore to get the real loreheads answering.
@@johnhill9045 In other cases I’d agree with you. But with a universe as expansive (and often vague at points) WH40k, even official novels from GW have some lore consistency issue.

Majority of "devs" these days are not even gamers. We need to show the door to these tourists ASAP and games flopping and studios closing is the fastest way to do that
100% Agree. Needs to be taken all the way to the top. Any investor that isn't a gamer, doesn't invest in games. Anyone that doesn't like or know the subject should never profit from it. Ever. To allow it leads us to this mess every time, without fail.
I'm sure there is a lot of people in the industry that want to crucify him for opening his mouth, the same people that are losing their job at the same time
I like how Willits said they dont need to sell 5 million copies for SM2 to be a success and just yesterday they came out with an announcement that SM2 sold 4,5 mil. I'm guessing they are really happy with how the game performed.
You know Legendary, I think this may be my favourite video from you. You and Saber are 🎯 spot on. It amazes me that so many companies in the industry just refuse to acknowledge the obvious signs in front of them
I fell in love with Warhammer 40k because of Space Marine 2. I rushed out and bought the first game, then started watching every lore video I could find.
The channel "Imperial Iterator" does great Warhammer 40k lore videos. Also I recently played and loved "Warhammer 40k - Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters" , a tactical X-com like game.
If there's anything devs need to learn from Warhammer and Hell Divers is that men want to live out their fanatasies through video games . Fantasies like fighting epic battles till their very last breath and uniting for a singular cause. Its not hard to figure this out. Men want to be a Space Marine fighting aliens, they want to be a Spartan fighting for their family, they want to be a Demon Slayer fighting evil, WE want to be an 80s action hero! Tell me im ANY of the badasses in Predator and ill be happy. Its that simple. Just stick with what a majority of your audience wants and im willing to bet that your game will succeed.
"SECOND COMPANY! WE HOLD THIS GROUND IN THE NAME OF THE PRIMARCH!" That entire set piece is literally just the masculine urge to make a last stand against all odds, and its perfect.
What I found ironic is that the year Baldurs Gate 3 came out and did well, we were told by the gaming industry at large that its success was a fluke and that it set unrealistic expectations for gamers Since then we’ve had: - Palworld - Hell Divers 2 - Stellar Blade - Black Myth Wukon And now Space Marine 2 Games that did well and that some continue to. We’ve made know as the actual PAYING consumers that forced woke agenda games and exploitive monetized live service games are NOT what we want. We have made that loud and clear with our wallets. The fact that now a dev is saying the same thing shows how much it’s come full circle.
Finally someone said it. Why is this the only industry where we have to care about the layoffs? If you make a bad product you lose your job. Happens to everyone at some point so why is it we’re supposed to feel bad for game developers?
Yes, you’re supposed to feel bad when people lose their career despite only doing what they were instructed to do by their bosses. Wait, do you think that game developers decide what game they work on? You know, what you said is basically “who would feel bad about employers firing their employees because the senior team made bad strategy decisions?”. The answer to that question is “anyone with a functioning sense of empathy”.
@@blindmown so did you feel bad for the thousands of people who lost there jobs when Covid happened? Were you making posts about how we need to feel bad for the everyday workers who actually make the country run. Or are you just playing into game developers begging for pity on twitter. Here's how it works for those who wonder why the industry keeps pushing these agendas eventhough their games keep failing miserably: - The publishers do it because they get paid (by blackrock/vanguard) no matter whether the games do well or not. - Blackrock/vanguard do it because as stated by Blackrock's CEO, they have to "force behaviors", so it's not really about the money for them (because they are the ones printing the money) it's about sending and pushing the message no matter what, it's about making these agendas the new normal.
Couple that with that fact that they got fingers in the Big Pharma, Big Ed + Weapons industry pies and its any wonder why more people aren't questioning these forced-from-the-top moralities in the first place
IGN on 9/17/24- "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Won't Say Whether 'Imposing Morals on Gamers' UA-cam Comment Is From Its CEO" IGN on 10/4/24- "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Says Big Budget Games Are Failing in Part Because Teams Are Over-Scoping Their Projects" They tried to discredit the CEO for their comment, then they interview a dev who essentially echoes the CEO's comment, and the conclusion they came to was that "game development is super hard." In 4 weeks they went from trying to bring negative attention to a successful studio, to asking a dev from that studio how their product was so successful, to then proceed to completely miss the point of the interview. Incredible.
Try as I might, I can’t for the life of me understand why Studios create boring worlds and uninteresting characters. If you aren’t capable of creating interesting things, copy someone’s homework. Like Fromsoft, Larian, Game Science, Shift Up, Team Cherry, and many others. A clone of a good game is better than a boring bad game. Pretty simple
It always goes back to the primal gamer need: Press button and see game do thing. Gameplay. I always use MGS franchise as an example of heavy cinematic narrative and social-political commentary, but primarily design-wise isn't ashamed and never forgot it was a game which is why me as a little kid that didn't even speak english at first could still have fun playing it.
Talking about scope. Look at Starfield, too much going on not enough substance. I played the game and several mechanics were not touched or cared about. Why do I have an apartment to customize? I have a ship. Why do I need to farm resources when I can buy them? Why are half the planets empty? Streamline and tell good stories Developers.

"games journalists" dont tell the truth as they fear of loosing access: early codes, fly out to demos etc. just like the dead magazine and online movie "professional critics". They fear the lost of access, of the preceived prestige, and they all then slander those who dont shill out too as phobes or "ists" , even when someone clearly points out the lack of good writing, direction and production. Studios promote this as hell even Disney will get ready with its "its racists and phobes who dont like our new show/movie" before its even out 1 day. they know its not good,
I know you've touched on it before, but I truly believe that most of the problems stem from the decision makers not being the same people as the game developers. If you don't have a personal investment in video games why would you know or care what makes a good one?
Ravenswatch launched recently and it is a perfect example of a studio biting off exactly how much it can chew. It's a solid roguelike with good mechanics and fun gameplay. It can feel a bit limited at times, but it doesn't feel empty or overambitious.
Somebody needs to give these boys a stern talking to, it's about damn time. The scary part about studios like Bethesda and Ubisoft is that they think they aren't doing anything wrong and that we, the gamers are the actual problem and we don't appreciate " high quality work with a brilliant story attached "
Sexuality and identity is personal matter. Don't shove it in everyday hobbies and recognise the fact those people are the minority. It's one thing to accept minority and naturally put them in your games & stories but blatantly forcing one sided diversity & pandering to the 1% while ignoring and antagonizing the rest 99% is not okay for any business. It is against your fiduciary duty to the shareholders, any company doing this nonsense should get their management and Board of Directors fired by the shareholders
Scope creep is definitely a problem. I felt hella satisfied with the SM2 campaign, despite how short it is, and the rest of the game is hella fun because they maintained the same formula throughout and didn't try to add anything extra or really change any of the mechanics. They focused on providing the most polished experience they could throughout, and it shows.
9:53 I want to say that this is incorrect, look i grew up on the original Ghost Recon. It originally was a First Person single player pseudo turn based shooter, you could control any one of your allies while commanding them alongside you like a turn based game. It was a slow burn kinda game where each level for newer players a single level could take over an hour, but you could clear them in a flash if you know what you were doing and thought tactically. Even the older 3rd person one’s were a massive departure from the original.
The reason the big companies have not begged for forgiveness is because of investment company’s like Black Rock that demand the stuff gamers don’t want
Just make games people want. There is room for 7/10, even 6/10 games, but not for products made by people who actively hate their primary audience. These people need to leave this hobby and their games need to fail regardless of quality. It's a must for the industry to heal and get back to what is actually important: entertaining people.
FF16 was a failure because it sold 3 million copies based purely off the brand, not the game. Square could poop in a box, put ff17 on it and it would sell 2-3m. They expected it to do above the guaranteed brand sales target.
It didn't help that Squeenix made the mistake of releasing it as a PS5 exclusive, in a time and age where exclusives are more of an annoyance than a celebration.
@@kraosdadafusfus8034 That's arguably even the main mistake I would say. Steam has an incredible reach and FF16 is a good game, it would likely have done well if it was released there. Yeah you can really tell that the game producer(s) in Saber actually play games and love games. The lead producer was the one who made Doom eternal too. Over the past 4, nearly 5 years, I can think of MAYBE 8 truly good/great AAA games that have come out for PC. Space Marines 2, BG3, Elden Ring, Armored Core 6, Wukong, Hogwarts Legacy, Doom Eternal, Monster Hunter. Thats about it, which is pretty sad if you ask me. I can think of a lot more non AAA games that were as good if not better than some of those that were made over that same time period.

FF16 isn't that different from Space Marine 2 in the sense that it knows what it's trying to do and does it well without going into a bunch of half-baked minigames and side-mechanics, but the PS5 exclusivity and the dissonance with older FF fans did substantially hamper its potential sales. Many old-school FF fans disregarded it as soon as they heard about it due to its focus on single-character action combat, but many people that never played a FF before were interested in it. It did 'fine' but would have done much better if it had released on Xbox and PC as well as PS5 from the get go. Story-focused games are very reliant on you not watching a streamer or youtuber play it because you don't have a PS5 and can't play it yourself for over a year.
Yep, spot on. I'm one of those old fans, who already skipped FFXV, exactly because of combat. I do play other games with action combat, but i prefer FF with turn-based combat. I play mostly on Pc and the Switch, so that doesnt help them either. It's a shame, because the story looked pretty good.

Space marine2 was bought by gamers. Not because of it being a Warhammer 40 K game. In fact it actually pushed gamers to read the lore, read the novels and buy miniatures for the tabletop version because of how space Marine 2 excelled in the gaming industry.

Money doesn't appear out of nowhere. If the games seem similar, but one is generating way more money, then it costs the user way more money, therefore the *value proposition* is ALOT WORSE. Would you want Porsche for three times the money of a Ferrari if it seems like they're the exact same vehicle?
Just like every movie I see
It’s always investors or certain people who are focused more on the money than what something represents or does for people.

If you want to make an adaptation of something, maybe learn the lore? And then you shouldn’t have any issues following the stories
Yes, you’re supposed to feel bad when people lose their career despite only doing what they were instructed to do by their bosses.

Here's how it works for those who wonder why the industry keeps pushing these agendas eventhough their games keep failing miserably:
- The publishers do it because they get paid (by blackrock/vanguard) no matter whether the games do well or not.
- Blackrock/vanguard do it because as stated by Blackrock's CEO, they have to "force behaviors", so it's not really about the money for them (because they are the ones printing the money) it's about sending and pushing the message no matter what, it's about making these agendas the new normal.
Black rock needs to be demolished, their quiet manipulative behavior behind the scenes is abhorrent
Couple that with that fact that they got fingers in the Big Pharma, Big Ed + Weapons industry pies and its any wonder why more people aren't questioning these forced-from-the-top moralities in the first place
Look up "Ideoligical Subversion", this is what those rich wankers are doing right now.

IGN on 10/4/24- "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Says Big Budget Games Are Failing in Part Because Teams Are Over-Scoping Their Projects"
They tried to discredit the CEO for their comment, then they interview a dev who essentially echoes the CEO's comment, and the conclusion they came to was that "game development is super hard." In 4 weeks they went from trying to bring negative attention to a successful studio, to asking a dev from that studio how their product was so successful, to then proceed to completely miss the point of the interview. Talking about scope. Look at Starfield, too much going on not enough substance. I played the game and several mechanics were not touched or cared about. Why do I have an apartment to customize? I was so distracted by your shirt, which I guess is a band now that I looked it up. For a second I thought you were wearing merch of Cat's Cradle, and I was like yooooo that's dope. Bro reads books! Haha. I guess the band must be a fan of Vonnegut.
18:45 i have a quote that i cant remember rattling around my head... its something like "a well run ship is helmed by a tyrant." or something like that. exactly like you say right here, there are too many cooks. As a curse of the West is that so many think everything should be a democracy. When in reality one creative vison must be in the ultimate seat of power.
Remember when the triple A dev accused Larion studios of having a hidden backer 😂
So it knows what it wants to be by not being final fantasy but a generic western fantasy instead gotcha
As a society, we’ve decided to stop hiring the best people for the job and we’re now seeing the repercussions of this. I’m just glad people are opting against this
Out standing move! 💪
D4 has become a corporate-sponsored hacked game. The headlines are "Billions Damage," "Trillions Dammage," "Infinite Damage," and "The Game is Broken." Meanwhile, the campaign, the actual game we purchased, not only languishes, Blizzard appears to be intentionally making it worse by decreasing the density of monsters. When was the last time you saw a video on the campaign?
the irony is that they just put out a crap patch
You completely missed the point
I love space marine 2 so much bc for me it brings me back to the gears of war days with my brother with the deep lore and space/alien warfare like halo, it like taking halo and gears putting them in a pot adding more gore and decades of lore and you get Warhammer 40k space marine 2. Just chefs kiss.
Excellent presentation. The world we live in today has forgotten or is choosing not to remember, the mistakes of our forbears. Politics, Idealogies and Greed destroy everything that makes humankind unique. This is just one more perfect example of a tiny virus infecting it's host and consuming it from within. Thanks for sharing.
AVG AAA Studio "oooh nooo, all we needed to make was good games all along??? why no one told us!!!!"
Players supporting the FUTURE AAA Studios is the way to go, F all the legacy, forget all the good games you've had, it's a thing of the past and it's NEVER coming back, so always support those who are still doing good like you've been doing, it's about time we let these studios burn to ashes and let new ones arise, Saber Interactive is on my radar now and i'm not even a Warhammer guy, but i fell in love with it!
Space marine2 was bought by gamers. Not because of it being a Warhammer 40 K game. In fact it actually pushed gamers to read the lore, read the novels and buy miniatures for the tabletop version because of how space Marine 2 excelled in the gaming industry. Being that it was built as a game first with no massive undertone agendas tied to sweet baby inc or stories dealing with “the message”. IGN can suck a fat 1. They’ve hated SM2 ever since its inception because the game doesn’t tie itself to these newly modernized tropes which IGN looks for and praises. Because they think it’s more important than story and gameplay mechains
