I grew up with this movie but always kinda wished they took the tanya subplot and made that the focus of the film instead. The premise of a mouse becoming a performer for a saloon of cats just so unique to me (and the songs were some of the best part of the movie anyways)
6:05 She wasn't singing in front of anyone! She was singing so people could hear her, but the alley was completely dark aside from a little moonlight! The only reason they were able to aim at her at all was because she was standing in the only source of light!
The sequel is pretty good. Positives 1. Cat R.Waul as a sophisticated villain and actually trying hide his cat instincts to execute his plan was kinda charming and scary how he can flip on dime if he wanted to. 2. Cathy Cavanidi singing as Tanya was actually surprising good. Good thing Cathy Cavanidi still continue her voice acting after this movie came out. Her song version is still holds up and classic. 3. Jimmy Stewart as Wiley Burp as old sheriff was good role and portrayed as old dog returns back retirement. Also, his cooperation with Tiger is hilarious because he is only dog doesn't chase or bite him despite him being cat. He shown to judge individuals based on their characters. 4. The Western town. Having the mice building the town was a nice touch and displaying their solutions to construction of the town with the cats help. 5. Native American mice. It was hilarious knowing these mice tribe are the only rodents that cats wouldn't go after because they show to shot a predator bird and eat it. Imagine how they would've help Tiger by chasing the cats out of town. 6. The animation art style. It is beautiful and so fluid, it was a treat to see it in gorgeous animation instead of looking like a cheap sequels straight video/DVD excuse. Negative 1. Cat R. Waul plan. It is dumb. Seriously, they have free labor force and could've taken advantage of it. Cat R. Waul could've had a group of mice become rancher for manageable animals like chickens or any avian species as payment for protection from the cats. You know, a updated callback from the first movie without cat pretending to be a rat. 2. The plot. It is messy pace follow. But, its fine and chaotic humor is still funny. 3. Cat R. Waul henchmen. The tarantula was shown to be only minion to be somewhat competent and actually does something productive at his job than the other cats. Weird that Waul didn't hired a Tegu, rattlesnake and scorpion as bandit minions to help him make things difficult for Fievel, Wiley Burp and Tiger. His cat henchmen were kinda a little generic and alright at most, they shown trashing the mice houses, talking to the boss and fighting at the climax. Really? The tarantula is the only minion to almost succeed at times, constantly being summoned by Waul and the eyes for his boss. The movie is fine as it own and the animation was such a great art style that went all out for a sequel.
I loved this film growing up. There's a lot to love about it. The music, the political messages, and the animation is pretty good too. Plus, it is notable for Wylie Burp being James Stewart's final role, and only voice acting role. I'm still not sure why John Cleese passed up _Beauty and the Beast's_ Cogsworth to voice the villain in this movie.
Is it ironic that John Cleese passed up two famous Disney films (Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, Zazu in The Lion King) to do roles in not as popular animated films (Fievel Goes West, and The Swan Princess)?
Guess he just wanted to have a villain role under his belt. Sometimes you don’t wanna be the side characters, you wanna be the main villain or the hero.
John Cleese plays the villain in this movie. That makes 2 Don Bluth sequels to have a Monty Python member as the bad guy. The other being Eric Idle in Secret of Nimh 2
Honestly with his good David Ogden performed for Cogsworth including the funny ad libs, I think this a case similar to Tim Allen being Buzz Lightyear instead of Billy Crystal where the role change is better!
So a few things to note here that weren’t mentioned. This version of Fieval is extremely popular it got its own show, it has its own section in Universal Studios(A play area for kids that’s kind of neat. It’s oversized human stuff made to look like a playground), the music plays in Universal as well, and that grown up version of Tanya is popular as well as on newer and heck sometimes even older copies of the original American Tail they used that model even if it makes no sense. I like Tanya’s songs and Cat R Waul is interesting because he has a conflict between being a posh reserved person and an animal, going back and forth on whether to just eat the mice or exploit them for free labor first. I really wish they had went deeper into his smaller conflict of not killing Tanya because her song moved him, it makes for good drama if Waul has to choose between saving one mouse because she offers something up in his world(seeing that they can be useful and people too) or eating them all due to base instincts. On another note if you want a Fieval movie that delves deeper into societal issues and treated natives with far more dignity then please watch and review An American Tale: The Treasure of Manhattan island. The animation is so cheap and crusty dusty musty but the story is incredibly engaging and honestly needs to be watched with what’s going on today. It also tries to retcon Fieval goes west so that’s always fun 😅
@@retrofan4963 Honestly so true, if the animation was better and it had more publicity it would be the true successor and then they could go west after. It is such a stark contrast to see natives handled with such care and then in Goes West they are so racist despite the fact that Manhattan was all about anti-racism!
Fun fact, I grew up on this film WITHOUT seeing the first film at all. I only saw it recently in my adult life. But yeah, that final scene with Wylie Burp is a genuine tearjerker and I always walk away from that scene thinking that it’s less Wylie Burp saying those words and more Jimmy Stewart himself reflecting on his legendary life as a Golden Age actor and the legacy he will be leaving behind as he prepares to eventually leave the mortal plane and entrust the future of acting to a new generation, hence him handing his badge to Fievel. It’s him passing the torch to future actors and wishing them the best.
Cool to see 2 other people who also saw this film first.😊 I certainly watched this quite a bit as a kid. Along with Rockadoodle.... Even though I still love both films, I agree that they both have their writing flaws. Especially Rockadoodle.

Fun fact : John Cleese declined voicing Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast to voice the villain of this film, I do love his performance here but yeah he missed out on being part of animated history
Look at it this way, other than that, DOS has been in mostly terrible fare such as the obscenely overrated, Lilo, And, Stitch, (yeah, I said it, and, I'm standing by it), that's that.
A big assist is Spielberg being kept on and a bigger budget to match the look of Bluths originals. Aside from Land Before Time 2, nearly all the other non Bluth sequels and projects cheapened their animation and made them too kid friendly
I'm happy you liked parts. I like it for Jimmy Stewart and Fivel's sister's song. Congratulations on 30,000 subscribers. I've got your back and am with ya all the way.
Had this film growing up, and enjoyed it a lot as a kid. Taking the rose-colored nostalgia goggles off, though, I agree about how disjointed it was, plot-wise. It feels as though there's little-to-no focus on the lead, despite the main character's name in the title. There were some good moments in the picture, and some bad ones, despite the great animation, voice talent and soundtrack. But all in all, the film is a genuine mixed bag. Though, I'll take this over the LBT sequels any day of the week.
So glad you covered Fievel Goes West! Amazing criticisms as always. Now for me, as a kid who lived in California and had a lot of American West history in school, this movie kinda resonated with me a lot even as an adult. I see the flaws in the plot and pacing sure, but I liked that the main focus didn't just center on Fievel but on the other characters too. Tanya's self confidence and realizing she doesn't need to be pretty to be talented, Wylie as the old washed up Sheriff finding the strength to run the cats out of town, Tiger overcoming his fears to protect his friends and Tiger's girlfriend going out to find herself only to genuinely miss what she had in Tiger. I think the characters work even if the pacing is chaotic. I do hate that the parents just vanish midway and you never see anything more about them. Also, I actually like that Fievel gets home relatively quickly instead of copying the first movie. The plot gets to pivot as Fievel has to convince his family that they are in danger and nobody believes him. He can't get through to anyone except Tiger and Wylie and suddenly you've got these polar opposites that have to be brought together to save everyone. I think that part of the movie actually holds up really well. Plus, what nobody ever talks about is that Tanya saved them. Her voice carried and she let all the mice know they were on a mousetrap so they could escape. I loved that part!
As inane and drawn-out as many of Tiger's slapstick scenes are, I'll admit I still get some chuckles from them. That ending speech Wylie Burp/Jimmy Stewart gave was such a beautiful note to cap off the movie, as well as Stewart's career. Though it's kind of ironic for me that Stewart's final performance was also my first exposure to his work.
As a fan of animation even back as a kid when this first came out, I loved the HECK out of this movie. I had this one & not the original (surprising, I know; I rented the original many times though before finally owning it recently), but I lived for the animation, the story & the characters, not really seeing the problems it had. Nowadays, yeah... I can see the flaws - how silly scenarios are, how dumb the mice were, and just how low the actual stakes were altogether, even though the plot could've worked if better tweaked to be that "manifest destiny" story that is truly was attempting to be - but I still have a fondness for this sequel. I genuinely enjoyed Tanya's arc (and her singing? AMAZING) since Fievel's arc was a lesser version of the last movie, and the villain had a GREAT plan... and almost won too. John Cleese really stole the show as the evil cat, but we can all agree that Jimmy Stewart as Wylie Burp was a bittersweet send-off - especially at the end - for the actor & the film's message in general. Overall, I enjoy Fievel Goes West as a film. It's not a perfect sequel, but it is fun, an animated ride for the senses, and a story that really could've been as moving as its predecessor was if they leaned more into continuing Fievel's family's quest to have the American Dream rather than focus so much on well-animated slapstick comedy.
@@raisorblade Thanks bruh. Also if your curious, and I'm not even kidding, if you want a sequel to "An American Tail" that further establishes the themes of the original, and isn't a total rehash? The two direct to VHS sequels actually pulled this off better than "Fievel Goes West" WISHED it could. Though on the bright side, "Fievel Goes West" did get two surprisingly solid video games. One on the Super Nintendo and one on the GameBoy Advance.
Also cool to see you bring up the other 2 sequels.😊 I agree that the 3rd certainly nailed the themes must stronger, then the 2nd. As for the 4th, I can't recall, since it's been years since I saw it. Funny story through, I saw the 4th film and Alvin and the Chipmunk Meet the Wolf man around the same time, since my dad rented both VHS tapes from the library. What fun memories.😊
Maybe it's just the country boy in me, but personally, I love this film and "Mystery of The Night Monster"; and truly believe "An American Tale" and "The Treasure of Manhattan Island" are easy skips! The first film is too dark and depressing, and the third film is only important, to me, as it explains why the mice are back in New York for 3, 4. and it's a rage-inducing copout! Otherwise, it felt too curtrent-event-ish with the politics. As for the first one being too dark, I think Bluth's "Attention-to-detail black lies" in the art is a contributing factor. Personally, I don't care how many hairs Tiger's fur has! Or how rough the horses' hooves are! Or how warped the grain of the wood of the boat is! That's just giving the animators more work! Now, I'm not saying replace everything with solid rectangles and stick figures, but if you want to put more attention to the detail of something, focus on the writing! The art is one of the reasons I love the other two! Bright, simplified, and fun! Take the monster in 4 for example: when it was fully revealed, I wasn't thinking, "How could they have possibly made this thing as smooth and clean as it is?" No, I was feeling Fievel's fear! He saw that thing and instantly felt terrified due to all the stories and eyewitness accounts he'd heard. But then, with him remembering Nelly's speech, he was able to fight through his fear and I could feel his courage! As for the guns/slingshots debate, as we see later with Cat-R-Wall, the guns are all to-human-scale outside of that opening shot because the opening was in Fievel's imagination!
No wonder the third film went out of its way to depict the Native American mice with way more dignity. Yes, An American Tail had more than one sequel. Three in fact.
None of them were any good, and, unlike TLBT it didn't take the destruction of their animation division to finally stop their production, catastrophic, absolutely wretched.
I want insight into the, "geniuses," who thought that casting Yeardley Smith was a good choice, you're on a show for thirty years, and, voice one character, that's an enormous red flag.
I think the humor in "Fievel Goes West" can be attributed to Phil Nibbelink. Because if you watch his self-produced animated films, like "Puss in Boots," or "Romeo and Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss," the same form of goofy humor and the same tone tends to pop up. Where as Simon Welles style of humor is a lot more subtle and, perhaps stylish.
I liked the sequel.....yet also its isnt as great as its previous one....but man that ending scene with Fievel and Wylie is very wholesome/sad especially that it was Jimmy Stewarts last film he did!
In my opinion the movies do you sit in the animation is spectacular it's just that it doesn't really hold a candle to the original I mean you can separate them on your own accord and just have them be different things. But you can tell in Alachua lld that it isn't definitely doesn't hold a candle to the first move at the love and detailed ombu put in the story
I must confess when I first saw this in theaters way back in 1991 I initially enjoyed Fievel Goes West more than Beauty and the Beast. Hell, I enjoyed it more than the original An American Tail at the time. However I was 9 and I think I often went for the more comedic, chaotic and over the top style at that age. While I could still enjoy it now it's long been obvious to me that Beauty and the Beast is a much more superb film. It's just funny what you enjoy more as a kid compared to when you're an adult.
I think the people who were on the fence over the two films got their answer when the animated series made all just despise it, which explains why it's vanished.
Idk if it was a joke, so please ignore this if it was, but "Rawhide" isn't a Blues Brothers song. It's actually the main theme from a '50s Western series of the same name.
I like to look at the bad guy of FGW as the rich WASP-y indirect bigot to the lower-class direct bigots of the first film. He holds himself above the rabble and lets "poors" fight it out without getting his hands dirty, all the while being the one turning the wheel. Lillian Smith's "Killers of the Dream" has a parable of the Rich White and the Poor White that demonstrates this very well. How the Rich White gets to keep steering the car by convincing the Poor White that he would rather get to be in the passanger seat than risk teaming up with the Poor Black to take the wheal and lose the passenger seat if they fail. This was about segregation specifically, but you can in this case apply it to anti-Semitism. Cat R. Waul is the Rich White (or Christian in this case) Also he's that bigot who finds the one entertainer from the group they oppress and see no issue with continuing to oppress the greater community
Given the sequels we’ve gotten out of Disney & such I have no real complaints about this film. However I did grow up on it as well, so I’m biased as well.
Like the second movie is not that bad but I kind of prefer the first one in my opinion. The review was pretty good to be honest oh and also I the editing well done made in my opinion keep on your good work bro
Dunno if it’s a neat Easter egg, or just an animator playing a prank, but you can see a drawn dick on Cat R. Waul’s face for a split second as he carries Tawnia away while she’s singing
I mean, yeah, Frozen 2 came out way later than it should have. It's not even a great or memorable sequel. BUT! It's still the highest grossing animated film in history. Super Mario Brothers just barely beat out everyone else in the roster about a week ago.
It doesn't matter, the films were polarizing, and, with the release of the second film, the gloves came off, (pun absolutely intended), Josh Gad just needs to stay far away from any third film.
I thought that film was better than it should have been, though, I can understand why others would hate it, Yeardley Smith was a truly disastrous casting decision, no doubt.

Despite it's (many) flaws, I actually liked Fivel goes West. It's definitely better than the other sequels that came after it.
Those films were so terrible they retconned the other sequel out of existence because they wanted people to forget about it, period.
Manhattan Treasure was actually pretty nice (as long as you take it as a standalone and not as a sequel to An American Tail, that's it)
@@kronk2.094 Perhaps, I just thought the restraint of its creators was the best thing about it, that's all, and, it's swell.
@@matthewdaley746 Honestly I'd argue the two direct to DVD sequels actually were much more in line with the original.
@supermariof0521 Perhaps, both, unwatchable, unquestionably.
Fifel gets and eyepatch and a tattoo and goes by Snake, An American Taile: Escape from New York.
This was uploaded the same day as my birthday. ^^
Happy Birthday!
A very happy Birthday to you Super.😊🎂
@@Canibar13 Thanks.
Also cool to see you bring up the other 2 sequels.😊
I agree that the 3rd certainly nailed the themes must stronger, then the 2nd.
As for the 4th, I can't recall, since it's been years since I saw it.
Funny story through, I saw the 4th film and Alvin and the Chipmunk Meet the Wolf man around the same time, since my dad rented both VHS tapes from the library. What fun memories.😊
Congratulations on reaching 30k subscribers!!!
Wonderful film in my opinion.
Still can't believe this animated movie was Jimmy Stewart's swansong to Hollywood.
What upsets me about this movie is Jimmy Stewart’s last character is called Wylie Burp.
I definitely have the Blu-ray copy!
If you do plan to talk about We're Back, you gotta talk about the Screweyes deleted scene.
I want insight into the, "geniuses," who thought that casting Yeardley Smith was a good choice, you're on a show for thirty years, and, voice one character, that's an enormous red flag.
My kid self really enjoyed this sequel. Years later, I find it okay. Some of the songs still rock though!
Raisor, at some point will you do more direct-to-video sequels? If so, I have a couple in mind:
American Tail 3 and 4
Fox and the Hound 2
10:02 As an animal nerd, and a fan of dark humor, this shall now be my headcanon.
Oh are we gonna head into Dreamworks territory after this where he finally talks about the good How to train your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda
I always viewed the first movie and this one taking place in different universes.
In this movie, the villain is the best. I remember my 9 years old ❤️
I liked the sequel.....yet also its isnt as great as its previous one....but man that ending scene with Fievel and Wylie is very wholesome/sad especially that it was Jimmy Stewarts last film he did!
I'm surprised you didnt bring up the fact Simon Wells wpuld later direct the infamous Mars Needs Moms.
@Traumaqueenamy What's your thoughts on the original An American Tail now?
@@retrofan4963An untouchable masterpiece, unquestionably.
@@matthewdaley746 I extremely agree. An American Tail is seriously underrated.
@retrofan4963 It is, wonderfully magical.
I'm still trying to figure out what that creature was in the sewer in the original an american tail lol
Idk if it was a joke, so please ignore this if it was, but "Rawhide" isn't a Blues Brothers song. It's actually the main theme from a '50s Western series of the same name.
"And they bounced back from financial struggling because I helped them do it!" . . . "Whoops"
Cat R. Waul is the Rich White (or Christian in this case)
Also he's that bigot who finds the one entertainer from the group they oppress and see no issue with continuing to oppress the greater community
Don Bluth doesn’t even like the sequels. (The ones he had nothing to do with)
Nor should he, they're a totally weak betrayal to the world he set up, the mostly-forgotten animated series likely caused the sequels getting delayed.
Can’t wait for surf’s up
That film was OK, the problem was penguins were getting rammed down our throats, that seriously hurt the film more than anything.
Kinda messed up that not even dad decided to follow the train tracks back to look for Fieval
I bet you're not going to enjoy "we're back: a dinosaur story" for the most part
I thought that film was better than it should have been, though, I can understand why others would hate it, Yeardley Smith was a truly disastrous casting decision, no doubt.
I went to both movies
I am sure I have watched this one more then the first one.
Wild Wild Furries.
0:31 believe it or not, I actually didn’t because I don’t know anything about RDR.
Yeehaw!
Fucking loved this movie
a later movie retconned it into beign a dream
Those two films should be retconned, I have no idea why Pat Musick felt the need to return, at least, she gave the world Mae Whitman.
It a good sequel to a great film.
The two films that followed couldn't even say that, fortunately, they ended things after four films, before things got totally out of hand, good.
@@matthewdaley746 yay. Sequels can be…weird.
@@nathanblevins9870 Yeah, like TLBT which turned into a franchise that simply had no reason to exist, and, got, worse with every new film, nasty, just, nasty, awful.
@@matthewdaley746 let’s not forget many talented voice actor we’re in the pile of trash. And the main characters voice gotten worst and worst. Especially ducky in my opinion
@@nathanblevins9870 To be fair, that's a character who has their voice actor recycled, anyway, to preserve sanity, and, Judith Barsi never got to choose her career path.
Not as good as the original but it clearly aimed for the fences in trying
Yeah, TLBT fell off right from the second film, and, only had occasional quality improvements while never approaching the original.
Not gonna lie, I do have a soft spot for Fievel Goes West. I watched this movie long before the original film, and I still enjoy it today.
But I'll admit, it's not as good as the first; at least on a story level
it is, and i'm tired of pretending it's not
I just watched the little Meride remake review and they are remaking hunback of notra dame I probably butchered that but let’s hope they have Hellfire or it is as good as the original mostly because that song kicks a##
What didn't kick a** was keeping the G rating despite having a song with the title of Hellfire truly an indefensible development, no doubt, period.
I thought I dreamed this movie wtf
The terrible sequels, (which should be retconned), decided it never happened, they also decided that Bridget never existed after Cathianne Blore's death.
yep opening against beauty and the beast was definitely this movies biggest mistake also tony is Mae whitmans mother go figure
It's.... Ok. Better than the average Disney sequel. But still OK,
So should I what or ...????
Just to warn you, when you watch We’re Back: A Dinosaur Story, I’ll say that the only good part was John Goodman. The rest of the film is ALL over the place.
I'll still take 75 minutes with confused storylines over 150 minutes with the same.
In my opinion? No. Not at all.
I agree, but, it's, at least, enjoyably bad, TLBT sequels are terrible out of the gate with only minor improvements.
MARMADUKE... The worst Movie of 2022.
3:52 WTF IS THAAAT😨
I Honestly Didn't Enjoy Fievel Goes West. The First Movie was Better
"Weast"
1:50 this movie is bad! It’s Beyond Bad! Really Really Bad!!
Lol
