It would go under in a year because historically accurate movies generally tend to suck ass without some form of embellishment and a focal point or protagonist to connect to, which real life just doesn't usually have
This is so well done. As a Pamunkey, it makes me happy to see people doing the research and shedding light on the true and tragic story of Pocahontas. I don't think I've ever seen another review on these movies that went into such a deep dive as you did. That being said, I also don't think it's a bad thing if you enjoy these movies. Growing up, they were always my favorite, but my Momma (who is also Pamunkey) made sure I knew that what Disney was showing was completely inaccurate. She made sure to never hide the truth of what Pocahontas went through from me. There is nothing wrong with appreciating a movie like this as long as you recognize and respect the truth behind it. But Disney could have done much, much better. They could have taken inspiration from the stories of Pocahontas from John Smith's tales but made up a completely new cast instead of trying their hand at "historical fiction".
I 100% agree. As someone who's black and indigenous, I love Pocahontas, and I especially loved it when I was younger for multiple reasons. But it's also important to distinguish Disney's Pocahontas and the real life Matoaka and her life. There's nothing wrong with finding the positives in the movie as long as you respectful towards the real life person and the culture and Natives.
Back then Disney and other rip-off studios wanted to be "creative" with there own Ideas some we're still good, some questionable, and some that were way worse and were scrapped for obvious reason and you guys can always read the more accurate version but might wanna warn you some of you will be scared for life.
As a kid pocahontas was one of my favourite Disney films, but after learning about the story about the real pocahontas, I can't watch the movie without feeling uncomfortable and it's one of the few movies I just can't watch. Also I'm curious as more people are more aware of the real story, I wonder if disney will keep her in the disney princess line or remove her, it wouldn't shock me if they do
Mulan also sets up her character at the start and we see her use her resourcefulness, determination and see her overcome her insecurities throughout the movie. Pocahontas barely keeps her character and feels like a prop more than even Snow White or Aurora (and she had the excuse of being asleep).
I saw a TikTok about a year or two ago about the Disney movie and it’s stuck with me since. It basically said that Pocahontas is like retelling the story of Anne Frank, but if you aged Anne up by a few years, made her dress provocatively, had her fall in love with a Nazi soldier, and then tried to convince us at the end that both the Nazis and the Jewish community were both at fault
It blows that someone as courageous and peaceful as Pocahontas only lived for 21 years. I admire that she's been able to just...keep with the flow despite the pain and suffering. It's definitely not easy for anyone to do. There were definitely some things I didn't know, like Ratcliffe's death. Yikes. I'm surprised they didn't eat him. And that Pocahontas already had a baby girl. 👶🏽 Really well put together research video! If I were to recommend something...maybe this isn't a "historical" thing but what about something The Hunchback of Notre Dame related? There's a bunch to go into with that subject. Like the different movies, the book, the characters who's left out the Disney movie, like Pierre, themes. Just a suggestion. But great video! I enjoyed it!
One thing that always puzzled me was why Pocahontas got such a negative reception when other animated movies that were about real life events (such as Anastasia and Balto) would be more enjoyed. I expected this video to give me an answer. And it did. To simply put things, this is a much more sensitive topic than the Russian Revolution. This is something that people have to suffer with to this day for whatever stupid reason. And Disney was also part of said offenders with Peter Pan, and possibly this. It’s stuff like this which make it really hard for people to separate the story as historical fiction. Though, even if you can (if you should is it’s on debate) Anastasia and Balto are better movies overall. At least that’s what I think, and I’m sure most of you think the same way. I want to end this comment on a question I asked myself after watching a similar review. Should the topic of colonization in movies be both sides, or should one side (namely the colonists) be portrayed as unsympathetic villains?
Honestly, we’ve had too many, “both sides,” approaches, in which history is viewed with a rose-colored lens and we’re made to think, “Oh, so they got along so well! … then why the 👖side?”

In my opinion, Pocahontas is an okay film. Also, indeed, not all history have a happily ever after. It's difficult at first to look into these mature true tales, but I say "before we continue in the present and look forward to the future, we must look back and acknowledge the past."
Pocahontas isn’t a bad movie in the sense of storytelling and having a female heroine but it definitely was a huge mistake to make it in hindsight now that the internet is far more accessible than it was in the 90s and people can do research on the historical characters in the movie.
Disney wanted another "Princess" picture for the sake of "the brand"(Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the like), but therein lies the problem, those are fairytales, Pocahontas was a real, historical figure, who died tragically young. Crowbarring in what is basically magic, and that stupid love story between her and Smith, aging her up to a young woman, who's in love with him, does a great disservice to the real, brave young woman. Disney should stick to fairytales and leave history to the historians. It was said, at the time, in 1995, that Disney would meet with Native Americans, and talk with them, to get a more balanced perspective. Early on, it was said that she would have been portrayed at the young age she was in real life, that she would only speak in her people's language at first, that she would slowly learn how to speak English, to be closer to history. Unfortunately, the bigwigs at Disney scraped the more historical approach, going with the buxom, Indian maiden who goes wild for John Smith, who looks like a blonde surfer dude, with Mel Gibson's voice.
There are two other movies on Pocahontas that I can think of that are a little more accurate than the Disney version, One is by good times which I grew up with more than the Disney version of Pocahontas... The other I remember was a clay animation that was way more accurate than either of the two... I cannot remember who made the clay animation one or what studio it was done by I would really like if somebody does remember that one and can give me some info, if they know...
