- The Internet’s First Analog Horror - No Through Road Explained
No Through Road is a creepy and disturbing 4 part Analog Horror/Found Footage Horror series, often referred to as the original inspiration for the Analog Horror genre, which includes incredible series such as the Mandela Catalogue. But unlike new Analog Horror which takes its inspiration from multiple other short films and internet videos, No Through Road was made at a time when such videos didn’t exist, leading to an audience of people that thought the creepy footage was real, and it became a work of art to future horror filmmakers who were looking for new inspiration for their disturbing films. In this Video Essay/Documentary we will dive into No Through Road and see what makes it so special.

Fred I do have a suggestion if you are interested of course. If you click on me you will find an episode I just made for a new analog horror series! It would be an honor if you gave it a watch.
@@chriskouroupis hey dude! I watched it and it was pretty good. Am not sure about what happened but I hope people see it.

i don’t even think it’s that confusing i just think i’m a bit thick compared to most people
@@FredJonesy tbh hearing you say it makes it sound like your a time traveler lmao. great video btw

Not sure if you know about this, but old analog and digital tapes could be re-recorded and sometimes the first (older) recording could bleed through onto the second (newer). It’s not that the bleed-through footage shouldn’t be there; it’s that Steven taped over home movies that establish his character.
It could be symbolism as new merging into old?
I thought maybe it was Cloverfield inspired.
@@Roadent1241 while it most-likely was inspired by Cloverfield, it would have either been through an early screening they saw or possibly through ads, because the very-first No Through Roads video was uploaded _a few days_ before Cloverfield was released in theaters.
@@Templarfreak Oooh. Fair.
Out of all of the explanations of this series I think this one explains it the best. Especially the 4 bodies that were found. It makes sense that present Dave, present Stephen, Ollie, and the other boy became the 4 bodies that were found
One thing I'm still confused about is where does Future James (No-Face) go after killing all his friends? But I guess this mystery will never be discovered unless they make a part five (I think they did, but never explained where Future James went).
@@sadsatisfying6942 Well to answer this I think he finds another future version of these people. Not sure but in no through road 3 they try to drive into no face and teleport back to the dark bridge. I think this was them restarting the cycle. So when they tried to drive into no face it restarted the cycle and no face was back where he was before he murdered his friends. And then he finds another future version and it restarts over and over. That’s my guess
@@ForgedSlime That's a really good theory, but more questions just flowed to my head. What was the "glitches" about? Why were there clips specifically put into the tape? Do they play an important factor in the story that we just haven't discovered yet?
@@sadsatisfying6942 I don’t know for sure. It said that the tapes were unedited so maybe the glitches were put there because of them going through time. I think the amount of times they reset the cycle or went back in time has had an effect on the video footage and maybe it’s there now as either a warning or foreshadowing something. Like in the first one when they found that dead rabbit and after the commented how it was perfectly preserved a glitch showed no face about to knock out Steven. Things like that are probably foreshadowing their fates. Also thanks Idk if it’s accurate or not but it’s what I think
I love this found footage film because life sometimes feels like it's in a time loop.

dead: ollie, steven clone, unknown person, dave
idk if this is right its just another commenter’s thing
The rest of the characters are named after their actors actual names, and The fourth one is unnamed, well I did some digging and found the fourth unnamed friend is played by a guy named Chris, Meaning the characters name is probably Chris. Thank you for listening
Being born in 2003 I grew up with what I would call the “rabbit hole” era of UA-cam, videos about Slenderman, Scary Maze Game, The Max Headroom Incident, oh man I could go on and on about the old creepy “unrated” side of early UA-cam. I remember seeing “No Through Road” when it first came out over 14 years ago and being young and dumb it scared the shit out of me, I remember every detail down to the signs the tunnel and the haunting music that played when the figure showed up, I never bothered to read into the video which was a good thing as I believed this was a real incident for years after I watched it. Looking back on old scary UA-cam content I feel the nostalgia rush over and over again knowing these funny little uploads made my childhood scary af, but at the same time I feel sad as looking back I know nothing nowadays will ever top the good old horror days of early UA-cam, every horror series now is either jump-scares or some copy paste VHS horror series with a photo negative picture of Jerma in the corner and will have a name like “The Yolky Files” or “The MeMaw Catalog”. This type of horror is from a bygone era and to say it made mine and probably many other childhoods very nightmare filled, I’m glad I witnessed it.

@@Analog.horror-ita_2014 you're TEN?!
In the first video it states that 4 bodies were found. This is strange because there is 5 people involved James, Steven, Dave, Ollie and the other lad.
I believe the 4 bodies found are Steven (future), Dave (enters at episode two) and the two other boys from episode 1.
This leaves James, what happened to him? In episode two James doesn't remember how he got away, just that he managed to flag down a car. I think that James from the future ends up saving his past counterpart and gets away.
--- events are as followed ---
Two boys in no through road 1 die straight away (two bodies)
James realises a future version of himself saves him in no through road 4 and does the same for his past self. The past version of James goes on to live a normal life for a few years and introduces Dave into the time loop when they go to leave flowers in no through road 2 (this version of James becomes future James)
Future Steven is killed by his past self (past Steven becomes future Steven after running away from killing his future self) (three bodies)
Dave is killed at the end of no through road 4 by the man in the mask (4 bodies).
Now that all bodies are accounted for, what happened to future James? He never dies and since he saved his past self (since past James was brought to a hospital and was able to flag down a car, it can be assumed that they managed to escape being stuck on the looping road)
Does this mean that there's a different James running around out there, outside the loop? one that managed to escape with his past self (until the past version returns to the loop to play his part)?
all this doesn't answer who the man in the mask is, however.
I personally don’t think that the man in the mask is future James at all. If he wanted to break the time loop like you said, all he’d have to do is not harm the lads present, shattering the events meant to take place and it would end.
No through road was AMAZING when I first watched it. It was like no other horror film. Incredible.
Seriously underrated channel. Great quality videos, man!
thank you! glad you like them
The fact that people believe this was real just shows how scary it is
I watched the whole series, and man, was it terrifying. You did a wonderful job reviewing and summarizing the story! Keep it up!!!
thank you!
BRO, THIS SERIS IS SO OLD. I WAS SURPRISED NO ONE TRIED MAKING AN ACTUAL REVIEW OF IT! THANKS!
you’re welcome! hope you liked it
this is unironically the ONLY horror video that freaks me the fuck out
I think no face is James trying to end the loop by killing everyone
Nevermind you already said that
This was an amazing ARG and story. I dont know how they could make a story this good and so in-depth on UA-cam in 2009. The story is confusing, but if you get it, it'll blow your mind off.
I love that The Eleventh Doctor’s dynamic with River Song was used as foreshadowing, especially since the first time The Doctor(As the 10th) and us the audience meet River, is the farthest point in River’s timeline. Which reminds me of Past Steven killing Future Steven, because the Steven we watch die is the Steven at the farthest point in his timeline.
yeah they were very clever putting that little bit in!
Such a cool series and even more impressive since it was made 14 years ago!
In chronological order:
No-Face (Future James) attacks the four people but spares Past James. Present James realises that he will become No-Face and runs away, becoming Future James. Present Steven decides to stop the timeloop himself by saving him from No-Face. However, he ends up being murdered by Past Steven (who also runs away). No-Face also finds Dave and kills him. At this point of time, the time loop is reset and another version of the four people enter the time loop again. Present James who is on the run was spotted by Past Steven not long after they realise that they are stuck. Then, Present James finds Past Steven. Past Steven is now Present Steven. Future James (who just ran away from Present Steven) arrives at the second timeloop. Present James, Present Steven and Dave then encounters No-Face again, possibly so that No-Face can confront present James about his future. They try to kill No-Face but end up at the farm again. At this point, while the three present people explore the shed, No-Face makes his way to the farm, and prepares to attack another version of the four people. The three people then hide in the field and realise that they were witnessing another version of themselves.
The whole thing happens over again.
Also, i would like to point out one thing. During the attack, No-Face appears to have magically teleported to the back of the car when they were reversing. Also, in one scene, No-Face seems to be wearing a hat, but the other, he isn’t? I believe this is the work of two No-Faces. Your thoughts?
you know my brain is completely rotten when i completely lose my mind when i hear the word "drive"
The radio music still gives me chills
I loved that series. One of the best analog horror episodes and also back then like you said we thought that it was real
Glad to see you back, pal. Its always nice to see something youve made. Great video as always :)
thank you :)
No Through Road is too well made to be an analog horror video.
it is more appropriate to call it Unfiction. the goal of unfiction is exactly like what the name sounds like, to present itself "as real" even though it is still clearly fiction, or maybe in a more poetic way: fiction that doesnt want to be fiction.
All analog horror can be well made if the creator puts effort into it, just because most people don't put that effort into them doesn't mean you should write out the whole genre.
new to this channel, a friend recommended you and am so happy that I looked you up! Great job done here.
thank you! i’ll be making more videos soon :)
Great video! I knew these existed but never knew anything about them, worth the watch 100%
Glad you enjoyed!
Imagine driving down the road one day and then next thing you know, you're being attacked by yourself who's stuck in a loop
Thanks for making a video essay on this amazing series and making it more understandable
the first episode is clearly the best by far but the others serve the important purpose of making the lore interesting and making the first one better/scarier
glad you enjoyed it!
Just a correction, the first analog horror series is actually believed to be 'CH/SS' and not NTR. NTR is kinda more digital than analog.
Childhood memory unlocked
What makes this even better for me is they're all Brit boys & I know exactly the area they're driving through. You're one too bro so I subbed, we gotta stick together lol. Excellent explanation thank you so so much!!😂❤
Gave you a sub! You brought back good memories!
thank you!!
I have to give credit to those guys, that was some pretty solid acting for a bunch of amateurs. Especially the screams.
Very nice video. I liked it
I dont mean to sound like a nerd but it's actually more of a digital horror because it lacks any use of VHS affects
Also I believe the glitching is caused by the fact that the camera was heavily damaged at the end, thus corrupting the file
the reason i call it “the first analog horror” was because it clearly inspired a lot of other series in the future as analog horror became more of a common and popular genre. It was a huge inspiration and it was the beginning of something different, it’s not analog, no, but what became of it was
thought this video was way more popular. underrated channel fr
thank you!
Wait, I’m confused. Which Steven ran up to the car? Because in the first tape it shows an unknown person behind the camera killing past Steven, which was really present Steven. but the one that ran up to the car had blood on his face even though past Steven killed present Steven by bashing his skull which was mutilated.
If Steven killed his future self repeatedly in the time loop, shouldn't that mean that they find infinite bodies in the area?
Was the car they passed in the first one the car in the future!
I feel like they’re at a paradox through time but the crossroads are the point were all time flow concurrent
In my honest opinion it’s the most scary video because of how real it looks
Bruh I remember watching this when it first came out, so good
The theory for AFTER tape 4 (happy ending [kinda])
The old four see the tunnel, Even though the timeloop continues, They start to remember EVERYTHING from the old timeloops, Instead the four run out the car and off before seeing no face, After that, No face, realizes that if they cant kill the past ones, they will kill the current ones, so they do so, with 3 years passing, the main 4 find the past no faces before they became no face, they are about to kill them, but they remember they stopped the timeline, meaning no face wont return, they continue living theyre life as a group of 6, (this connects to fred jonesy's theory)
I love your videos :D
thank you! glad you enjoy them :)
DUDE THIS IS GENUINELY HORRIFYING.
Fair enough.

I e only ever seen the ending to power one when I was a kid as it was appart of a found footage collection and claimed to be real. I was thinking it looked familial

Why does the radio song sound like some person saying “i sh** a bird” with a banjo playing
There's just one question i have for this analog horror story, whatever happend to Ollie, since there's only three people in the series that ever does anything, so what did happen to Ollie, did he die in the car or what... 🤔🤔🤔
30:48 you missed a great opportunity to reference 'wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff'

plz Tell me what u mean
The fact that one of the four teenagers sound like marcello is just weird
i watched this when i was really young about 8-10 i had nightmares and couldnt sleep for weeks on end scary shit
heres something about my theory
i think that when people go through the tunnel
a time loop starts
idk
every 2 years in the hospital:
``NAH WHY THEY LOOK THE SAME,AND WHY THEY CAME BACK EVERY 2 YEARS``
that song was from the movie the strangers i think
it is!

@@FredJonesydo you know the song?
@@1-SFOD Gillian Welch - My First Lover
@@SarahnatorX thank yiu
thanks algorithm!
i think the glitching is just the recording corrupting and were seeing other things that have been recorded on the camera
The video is inspired by the strangers and probably when the new strangers comes out it will make a part five I think
there ain't no way there's a doctor who reference in the project from the pioneering era of analog horror
I wanna think that this series went on to inspire the Left Right Game series.
4 lost.
5 found dead.
W video
What is the origin of the song on the radio in the first tape?
Originally “My First Lover” by Gillian Welch, then turned into the “Looping Song” from the film The Strangers, i believe this version doesn’t have an official name but it is part of the soundtrack
Back to the future ahh story
So then the main question is. How does the loop start? Clearly in the first one they're already in the loop. Unless No Face is a "real guy" who first kills them and THEN the loop begins where James becomes No Face
He explains it starts when they go through the no through road for the first time
before that there is no signs of a loop
its only after they go under the arch that they start to get lost
Bro what the HECK💀WHO IS THAT THING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I thought I heard that Ted the Caver or something like that was the first analog horror?
ted the caver is the first creepypasta i believe, analog horror didn’t come about for a while but no through road was one of the genres early inspirations
@@FredJonesy thanks for clarifing, it seems youtube is recommending me the begins of the online horror genre then.
me when he was the killer but he just didnt know it
I for real though Present Steven won the fight and killed Past Steven, I was wondering why Present Steven would kill Past Steven, in the first No Through Road, it probably looks like No-Face killed Past Steven with his camera, but in No Through Road 4, Past Steven killed Present Steven by pummeling him with his own camera, that's just crazy..
And to add on, I feel like Future James only killed Present Dave because of him being in the past after entering the time loop to kill them, he probably went back in time, but then went to the present not knowing that it was Present Dave, killing him in an unknown way.
I saw the original No Trough Road from Jacksepticeye, I don't remember which video it is. But I remember I believed the video was real
I saw this on a try not to get scared. I think it was jacksepticeye back in the day. Totally thought it was real 😂
Spoiler right in the title is an interesting choice
is there a spoiler in the title? If you’re referring to the thumbnail then all i’m doing is describing the plot, which i wouldn’t call a spoiler
So basically this is just a gungeon moment?
"one of the first analog horror films"
has it rlly been so long that people have forgotten the term "found footage"
hits you with a brick
used the term “analog horror” to draw in some of the younger crowd too and it seemed to work, i know what found footage is lol
Gen Z doesn’t even know what analog is
not gonna watch this cuz i already watched somebody else basically recap the ENTIRE thing, reall good fucking show though, I would love to see more "No through road"
Hfjone vibes tbh
There is a 5th part to the series
no there is not

What about marble hornets
Calling this "analog horror" is like calling Marble Hornets and EverymanHYBRID analog horror. It's just not.
it’s just a title, i only said that because the series was inspiration for a lot of the early analog horror that came after it
