Running on CBS from 1973 to 1974, "The New Perry Mason" breathed fresh life into Erle Stanley Gardner's iconic defense attorney. Retaining the essence of its predecessor, the series reintroduced all the beloved characters from the original Perry Mason saga, including the elusive receptionist Gertie, portrayed by Connie Cezon. While staying true to the classic plot devices, the revival ushered in a new era with a switch from the familiar theme song "Park Avenue Beat" to a more generic, yet still gripping, dramatic fanfare.
Despite boasting a team of seasoned professionals from the original series, such as executive producer Cornwell Jackson and director Arthur Marks, "The New Perry Mason" ventured into uncharted territory with a fresh cast led by Monte Markham, who assumed the mantle of the titular character once portrayed by Raymond Burr. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the series occupied the coveted Sunday evening slot at 7:30 pm (EST) on CBS, the very network that had launched the original Perry Mason to fame. However, despite its pedigree and fervent fan base, the revival fell short in the ratings race, ultimately succumbing to cancellation midway through the season due to stiff competition from NBC's "The Wonderful World of Disney" and ABC's "The F.B.I." Placing 71st out of 80 shows that season with a 13.1 household rating, "The New Perry Mason" bid farewell to the small screen, making way for the arrival of "Apple's Way."
