Han chasing after the stormtroopers in the special edition is even better because it actually makes sense why their running from him, because they know there’s a huge deployment of stormtroopers just down the hall.
As somebody who's never seen the original cut of the movie I'm actually pretty split. To me the idea of Han running them down only for them to hit a deadend and Han to be facing all of them is hilarious because it shows how quickly Han can get ahead of himself. The special edition is great because it "kind-of" does that but also makes the number of troopers a comical amount.
imo, Han charging in with confidence only to find he was being led into backup makes so much more sense than running them into a corner and suddenly not having a plan It's a small change but its 10x funnier and actually makes the stormtroopers much more clever in hindsight, using their numbers and Han's cockiness against him Also RIP the stormtrooper hitting his head sound effect that was added in Number 1 change in our hearts
As a kid I always saw it as the same joke anyway. Maybe adding a few more guys is a good idea, but I think the sheet amount they crammed through that door is silly looking.
“Maclunkey” is the worst possible swear word in Rodian. The f word in English doesn’t even come close to the sheer level of offense and disrespect it conveys.
I find it hilarious how lucky I was to get the original trilogy DVD sets back when I was like 7. All I ever watched was the original cuts and it wasn't until I was 20 that I found out how rare the original cuts were. Good on ya younger me you made a great purchase
I’m not a huge Star Wars fan (love it, just not passionately), but something about learning that Darth Vader originally had eyebrows shakes me to my core.
14:36 funnily enough this slower delivery was explained in Rebels season 2 episode 18 Shroud of Darkness where Ahsoka explains the Ezra that Yoda got more depressed as the Clone Wars waged on. I think my appreciation for Rebels grew
Even though it's totally believable, since Anakin was not that old when he died, as he was around his 40's. So Hayden was a better choice for the force ghost than Sebastian Shaw
@@sarveshnathan7559 I would forgive Hayden's Force Ghost if at some point during the sequel trilogy Obi-Wan's force ghost had appeared as Ewan McGregor.
@@sarveshnathan7559 well and Luke might actually know what Anakin Skywalker looked like as a young man, which a lot of people don’t think about. Nobody knew who that old guy was.
Another line change in ESB that I hate is Luke saying “You were lucky to get out of there.” to R2 on Dagobah instead of “You’re lucky you don’t taste good.” That line was cute and funny, why change it?
lucas has an issue with character over explaining the plot instead of relying on natural human quips and small talk. It's the same reason why he changed the "bring my shuttle" line as well. Lucas just doesn't understand dialogue and how people casually talk and speak at all.
The only thing I don't like about the special edition version of the emperor scene is that his face is so much more visable. I prefer his face to be obscured and kind of hard to see, it makes his reveal in Jedi much better.
Imagine if they'd release an interactive version, where you can build your preferred version, pick and choose which changes you want to keep or leave out.
It’s canon that Vader is feigning ignorance during his conversation with Palpatine in Empire. In the 2015 comics he sends Boba Fett to find the rebel who destroyed the Death Star. Luke escapes but Fett tells Vader his name, and after he leaves, Vader says to himself, “I have a son.” and uses the force to crack the Star Destroyer’s window in silent rage.
11:02 James has no idea how in luck he is. There’s a 1997 edition of ROTJ that has *exactly* this: The new Victory Celebration music, and Sebastian Shaw as Anakin’s force ghost. I’ve got the version on VHS, and while it still has the terrible Jedi Rocks scene, it has this exact ending combination, and it’s great. And it even gets rid of the “Weesa free” Naboo part of the celebration, so bonus points there as well!
I remember very fondly the Revenge of the Sith DVD menu showing off a 1st person perspective of fighting General Grievous in the chapters selection. That alone made it one of the coolest set of features on a DVD ever IMO.
Yeah it's stupid. I want to see the real OT in Blue Ray. Like Lucas knows everyone loved the films the way they are so why change it for the worse. I will never understand the adding of pointless CGI and a bunch more changes and then never release the original versions of the films so to have your audience decide which is best.
@@CometStar100 The reason is dumb ego. Like how he keeps saying his favourite character is Jar Jar. He is butthurt about a lot of fans disliking his ideas.
The amount of money Disney could make re-releasing the original cuts could even be enough to help us avoid another backrooms nightmare of a live-action remake
I do wish Hayden had been given some direction in his Force ghost shot. He said he was like “uh… what are you doing?” And George was just like “eh it’s cool man just stand there”. Obviously to preserve a surprise but still.
I’ve always been of the opinion that the special editions are pretty good, it just sucks that you can’t actually see the original cuts anywhere anymore!
I honestly don't think they are bad. At all. Maybe because I never saw the original ones but the changes are fine (except for the han solo shooting thing, that one was just straight up trash).
Hayden Christensen as Anakin's ghost was awesome to me. It shows that when Vader was born, what Anakin was as a Jedi got lost, and after he went back as Jedi, his ghost maintained his original form.
I always see this argument used to justify the change but it doesn't make sense to me. Anakin was redeemed right before his death, so if he died a good man why wouldn't his force ghost project his current age?
The original Biggs scene was a lot longer and the other pilot mentioned knowing Luke's father, which is why the scene was cut. They re-edited the scene for the special edition and made another pilot walk across the scene to cut the dialogue mentioning Luke's father (which back then of course wasn't Vader)
@@deleetiusproductions3497 I guess since the other Biggs scene (where they talk about the nationalisation of the economy) got cut, this one had to go as well. The mention of Luke’s father at that point (after Ben‘s death) was unnecessary to the third act of this movie anyways, so they probably decided to delete the scene altogether. Still now, as nice as the scene is (edited or unedited) it kind of slows the movie down, so there might have been pacing reasons as well
@@ltb1345 By the time they got to filming, the Luke having an evil dad plot was already cut out. Like I said, they did film this scene originally with dialogue implying Lukes father used to be a different character.
10:13 I can explain this: during the scene where the plans are being shown to the pilots, you will see that the trench runs upward to the top of the Death Star, meaning the exhaust port is at the exact top of it, so the explosion ring would move vertically.
As someone who started the movies in story order (watched the prequels before the originals), the addition of Hayden really sold the ending for me. I still would’ve been emotional either way, but it’s incredibly satisfying to visually understand that Anakin is Anakin again. It was like I got to see a character who did everything to save his family finally get his family. I understand a lot of people don’t like the prequels, and I get it, but man. That’s what really did it for me.
I honestly think having Hayden be anakin’s ghost makes a lot more sense. The only real arguments you could make for it to be Shaw is if you started with the OT and how they could’ve done it better. If you’re considering in the prequels and anakin’s story now, there is no reason for Anakin’s force ghost of him being old. I would’ve had Anakin be more happy and probably more emotional seeing himself redeemed and looking at Luke again alongside Kenobi and Yoda. Anakin was only 45 years old when he died. Why would he look like an old man? People say he got “healed” when he was redeemed and how that’s how he would look if he never turned but wouldn’t he still look like Hayden when he’s 45 years old and only looked like that because he turned? He turned to the dark side and was physically scarred. Another reason why it makes more sense to Hayden is that most of the characters who know Anakin would know of his younger self and before he turned into Vader. This even extends to when he was Vader himself. Whenever he thought of “Anakin Skywalker”, it was his younger self. Very little people knew Vader was Anakin. Luke did but it’s not like he’s dumb enough or doesn’t have some special powers to not fucking know that the young guy who appeared with Yoda and Kenobi, is his father. If anything, he should still look like a slightly older Hayden if people are wanting him to be old but his ghost shouldn’t look like an 80 year old man.
Lucas likely made a stipulation in a contract with Disney that he’d still be able to change the original trilogy films and stop the original versions from being released when the rights to Star Wars were purchased. The OG trilogy being re-released is out of their hands to an extent.
Dont go pretending we have any real evidence that this is the case. And at least according to the head of the Lucasfilm story group, it isnt, and Disney is just "choosing to respect George's wishes" on the matter
@@cptTK421 I like to believe that there’s someone with well preserved copies of the originals out there, just waiting for Lucas to either change his mind or become one with the Force.
Another change I like, though it's kinda small, is the addition of more Rebel starfighters in the Battle for Yavin. You actually get a sense that this is the Rebels throwing everything they have at the Empire and their Death Star. Someone definitely should make like a version that includes the minor visual improvements while leaving out the more glaring and garish additions. (Most Eisley, WESSA FREE, Jedi Rock)
If I remember well, didn't James Rolfe aka AVGN came up with an idea of having customizable edition of Star Wars Original Trilogy where viewer can select each scene from the original theatrical release and special editions. I personally love AVGN's idea because we all could have our own definitive editions of Star Wars. Disney better realize how incredible AVGN's idea is.
Actually I prefer Hayden showing up over the original tbh. Even ignoring the prequels it never made sense to me that Force Ghost Anakin would show up as a guy he literally never looked like.
I agree and I disagree. I disagree on the part where if you ignore the prequels, Hayden would make sense. People wouldn’t like it being Hayden if they started out with the OT first. Luke would be able to recognize or put together that it’s Anakin but for viewers, they’ll be confused on why he’s young. I do agree that his ghost should be Hayden because of Anakin’s story is like now from when ROTJ came out. Continuity and story wise, Hayden makes more sense. If people are trying to say he should look old, he should look like a slighter older Hayden because Anakin was 45 years old when he died but he only aged badly due to him turning and the bad stuff that happened to him when he turned.
@@Deathpool_04 I watched the Original Trilogy first and then the prequels. And I do think having younger Anakin worked better than older Anakin, even if it is confusing as to why he was younger on first watching.
@@BratzRockAngels Yeah, to be clear, I wouldn’t say everyone would not like it if they started with the OT first. Still, I think I’ve said here but older Anakin would only make sense for out of universe reasons. For a lot people, they think “out of universe reasons” is more important than “in universe”. I understand why but I don’t think it makes sense.
i prefer seeing the Hayden ghost. It makes me feel happy to see that he returned where he was before he turned into Darth Vader instead of some old guy even though i knew it was still Anakin.
But the hair is exactly how he was when he was going through his dark side conversion. The original force ghost is a reflction of how Anakin could have looked had he never fallen to the dark side, to symbolize his redemption to the light. If you're going for "when he was still a Jedi" I feel you have to give him the Attack of the Clones look Hayden also has a weird expression, imo. He has a bit of a smirk, when he should feel more earnest and serene
Am I the only one who prefers every change in the end of return of the Jedi? Victory celebration is SOOOO much better than Yub Nub, the planets from the prequels connect the trilogies a lot, and also seeing Hayden both adds more connection between the trilogies, and makes it so Luke gets to see his father as the person he is was in his prime.
American movie ratings: "Here's an ambiguous 'PG' rating which just means your parent should watch it" European movie ratings: "12+. Take it or leave it."
Lmao I remember when people talked about Revenge of the Sith as "the only PG-13 Star Wars movie", oooh it's so epic and grand and violent and brutal, it's PG-13!
Fun fact about the original star wars. 1979 GL changed some things and released new version to the cinemas after few weeks, so people who watched star wars at it's premiere watched defriend version than people who watched it next month. The very original cut of this movie never was never put on dvd or vhs and it's unknown if GL still has any copy of it. With means the original star wars cut can be classified as the lost media, and any version of this movie is just another special edition
I actually kinda like Hayden's appearance as the force ghost, because it represents Anakin instead of Vader, as if Anakin was a "different" entity of the force. Also, it's a neat tie up to the prequels
@@Magmafrost13 Not really? Anakin "died" when he turned to the dark side and became vader, and anakin was reborn when he redeemed himself and killed palpatine. Its just symbolic.

@@David-iv3to Young anakin is just symbolic of him being a jedi again, its how he would have wanted to be remembered as a jedi, and its how he remembered himself as anakin. Force ghosts dont have to look like they did when they died, the ghost sort of gets to choose how they appear and its the form anakin probably would have preferred.
I actually prefer Hayden's ghost. Remember, in the same movie, Obi-Wan says that "He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed." It's meant to be symbolic, and I feel Hayden Ghost is the same way. Besides, Sebastian Shaw was 78 when RotJ came out, which is fine when he's playing the deformed Vader, but not when he's playing a perfectly healthy 45-year-old Anakin.
I agree, however I dislike how brooding and moody he looks. I would've preferred if the direction had Hayden act more jovial like Shaw's original performance.
@@miguelpereira9859yep it looks really out of place in the scene, direction should’ve been improved so that it feels more natural with the rest of the shot but currently he looks at Luke with a creepy stare and has zero interaction with obi wan and yoda. A disappointing downgrade of a change.
@@KIRB881 The Shaw ghost was simple convenience. They already had him playing unmasked Vader, so from a production standpoint it made sense at the time to have him also play Ghost Anakin so they wouldn't have to find another new actor.
Honestly I think the only bad editions are the dated 90's CGI characters and creatures which look completely out of place next to the puppets and practical effects
I hate all the CGI additions to the Tatooine chapters in A New Hope. The animals look tacky as hell, that scene where the jawa gets yeeted by an animal in Mos Eisley is on par with Jar Jar tier stupidity. That scene with the CGI rock wall R2D2 hides behind from Ben Kenobi looks flat and one-dimensional and doesn't change the realism whatsoever. Would you include Han solo shifting in his chair to the right CGI? Because that's another awful computer-generated addition. The inclusion of Jabba as explained in the video. Honestly I would be so much happier if the Tatooine segement was left unchanged because it sucks.
Dude, the hate he got is complete unjustified. It's not right to hate the actor for not playing a likeable character. In fact Schaff said in his TFATWS video that he hates people who bullied Wyatt Russell online and he's doing the same here to Hayden. Schaff may make funny videos but I think he's a horrible person irl for hating on one of nicest guys in Hollywood. Now Hayden is coming back to acting in the Ahsoka show. I will hate for people like him to bully him like they did back then.
Prequel fans have multiple seasons of clone wars to enjoy a good Anakin, we don’t need to see the second worst Anakin showing up in RotJ. But maybe if they age up Hayden or wait another 30 years then he can be put in
@@BunchyPanther42 Nah there are a lot of people that aren't prequel fanboys that think his performance was terrible. That being said it would be nice if he proved himself and did a good performance in these shows.
Actually, I think the "Wesa Free!" is important to the celebration scene. While you can SEE Gungans celebrating, it's blink and you'll miss it, you mostly just see a faceless crowd in Theed, a city populated mostly by humans, with the Gungan cry of "Wesa free!" you get both visual AND auditory confirmation that both the humans AND the Gungans of Naboo are celebrating the fall of the Empire, unifying the planet once more, as the two races have been at odds ever since the prequels.
There's actually a SW Despecialized version by Harmy that takes the old SW and makes it look better, without adding anything new. As far as I know they've only done ANH, but it's impressive how well done it is.
Schaff mentioned Greedo walking around in the background of the Jabba scene. I regret to inform you that he's also walking around in the background/midground/foreground of almost EVERY OTHER SCENE. Wtf? Do all rodians in Mos Eisley just have the exact same physical features and clothing? This has never not confused me ever since I first noticed it.
Hayden Christensen at the end of RotJ is actually good, because it implies that Anakin as we knew him before joined with the force, not Darth Vader, and makes Vader's "Anakin was weak, so I destroyed him" line more true
Another change that I *LOVE* is that they fixed the pacing & timing of the "These aren't the droids you're looking for." exchange in Episode 4. In the '77 version, the dubbing is paced really awkwardly with the characters barely letting each other finish their lines before delivering theirs & nearly cutting them off. I don't know how well this'll come through in text, but this is basically how it was: Stormtrooper: How long have you had these droi- Luke: About three of four seasons. Obi-Wan: They're up for sale if you want them. S: Let me see your identificatio- O: You don't need to see his identification S: We don't need to see his identificatio- O:These aren't the droids you're looking for. S: These aren't the droids we're looking for. O: He can go about his business. S: You can go about your busine- O: Move along.
Yes the mistake is on her but you make it sound like she was a problem with the franchise when she is well known for having saved a new hope after the first showing was a disaster
@@melvinlinderoth7108 That's a bit of a misconception, they were both heavily involved in the editing, wasn't just her. That mentioned showing was a very rough cut where most of the vfx/scenes weren't even finished/included and replaced with stock footage. There's a highly detailed video on this topic by "Nerdonymous" if you wanted to look it up, it's very good.
That was one of the most flawless and funniest transitions into a sponsorship I've ever seen. I watched that whole transition even though I knew what was coming XD
My favorite line from Darth Vader is this one: "Luke, you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together, we can rule the galaxy as father and son." This comes right after the greatest reveal in cinematic history: "No. I am your father."
I actually like the Hayden Christensen Ghost edit in ROTJ. I feel it make sense why it’d be a younger version of Anakin. It also does a good job tying the saga together even more. Plus, Sebastian Shaw is still credited thank god, which is better treatment then what Boba Fett’s original VA got (I also like the new Boba Fett voice edit, but the original actor should still have got something in the credits).
It does make more sense for it be Hayden. With the continuity of Star Wars and Anakin’s story now, it makes absolutely no sense for his ghost to be an old man. Speaking of this they did Boba and Anakin in the special, I think they should redo it now. Temuera couldn’t give his best performance because he was supposedly delivering it over the phone and at a bad time. People also think he should use his new Boba voice. With Anakin, they should redo it because Hayden is closer to the age Anakin died and how they should make him more emotional having been redeemed.
15:53 I was in absolute shock when I realized this wasn't a joke. The emperor was literally played a woman with a man's voice over. Her name was Marjorie Eaton
Dude I worked on that dvd release. You don’t know how good it is to hear you appreciate those menus. They were hella difficult to do. I now don’t hate my job as much.
You didn't even mention how in episode 4 they added a bonk sound effect when one of the stormtroopers hits their head. That made me laugh so hard the first time I watched that cut of the film.
11:55 George Lucas originally cut that scene because the older guy says "I met your father once when I was just a kid" which... raises some questions. The special edition uses the fancy new digital effect of "guy walking across the front of the screen to hide a cut" to leave that part out.
I mean, Biggs looks older than Luke by like five to ten years. Couldn't a very young Biggs have met Anakin off-screen when Anakin went to Tatooine to search for his mother in AOTC? Maybe Biggs' parents were friends with the Lars family, thus also explaining why Biggs and Luke were childhood friends
@g.williams2047 That makes even more sense then doesn't it? Someone older probably would have known Anakin, possibly even from when he was still a slave. But idk
Justice for Hayden. He did an absolutely fantastic job portraying Anakin and had the Vader cadence down pact. All of his line deliveries are forgivable and you’d be fine with it if it were James Earl Jones’ voice at the exact same cadence. Because that’s what Hayden emulated in all the prequel content he’s been involved with; as well as the sequel content now. Him being in the end of RotJ is great, and I won’t accept anything else. The original actor for Vader didn’t get cut from the movie, he’s still in the Deathstar. Also sarlaac pit improvements are 10/10, no more desert anus
Aw that’s actually like really sad to think about. That there’s a whole generation of Star Wars fans who never got to enjoy the same experience we did, and that the powers that be could let them enjoy it too at any time, but they don’t ://
Yeah I’ve only ever seen bits of it in videos like this one. I don’t know if I would actually sit down and watch them all the way through but it would still be nice if they were available for those who want to
I actually like the Jabba scene in “A New Hope”, for one we get this gem of a line from Han, “Jabba you’re a wonderful human being.” Second I think it adds to the story by showing Han and Jabba’s relationship. It makes it more impactful in “Return of the Jedi” when Jabba discards Solo and throws him in a dungeon.
I'm skeptical as to what showing there relationship adds. Them being somewhat friendly doesn't really build to anything and is never brought up again. It doesn't really change my understanding of the story in Amy way. You can argue it adds something, but I don't feel it's worth loosing the surprise of seeing jabba for the first time in episode 6.
If they were gonna add the Jabba scene then they should’ve cut down some of the lines from the Greedo scene. The Greedo scene was literally written as a replacement for the Jabba scene so they go through all the same talking points, so having both is dumb and unnecessary.
It doesn't add anything to their relationship. If you cut it out, the story as a whole doesn't change at all, and every piece of information it gives us was *just* given in the Greedo scene.
@@Lanetgm Jabba was never meant to be a human, that was a myth. His human actor was just a placeholder, the scene was cut because they couldn't finish the VFX in time
A change not mentioned here that I think is good: making it so the Ewoks blink. I've always found Ewoks adorable, but it's kinda creepy how they didn't blink
I might be alone on this, but I actually enjoy Boba Fett flirting with the twi’lek girls in Jabba’s palace. it gives his character, dare I say? A little bit more depth which he sorely lacks in the OT.
@Topside’s Cinecade I would argue the old Anakin was better _because of_ continuity. Vader re-became Anakin before he died, so the last time he was "Anakin" was when he spoke to Luke before he died. Having Hayden Christensen there actually breaks continuity imo.
Admitingly i do miss Clive Revill's Palpatine voice from the original. I've met him at TFCon, and he's a sweet little bean. He later went on to voice Kickback for Transformers G1 and the 1986 Movie.
I always wonder what an alternate universe would be like if he still voiced the Emperor while Ian McDiarmid did the body, even in the Prequels and, sorry for bringing this one up, Rise of Skywalker; kinda similar to how Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Darth Maul were dubbed by another actor while the actors in the costumes and makeup did the physical acting.
The last time anakin’s Jedi form was in the prequels, him retaining his last physical appearance as a true Jedi like obi wan and yoda upon their death was beautiful
Honorable Mention that actually relates to Number One but Ian McDiarmid actually dubbed over Sam Whitwer’s Palpatine talking to Vader about Ahsoka in Rebels and it feels really good to hear OT trilogy actors talking about an animated character. This change ironically isn’t even on Disney plus for some reason and can only be found on the amazon prime version??
Hayden showing up at the end makes so much more sense. Anakin was a jedi when he was young so him returning as a force ghost when he was young makes more sense than him returning as a force ghost when he died as darth vader. Also Hayden is underrated
I’m really excited to see him in the Ahsoka show! I’m surprised he came back at all really but I suppose new prequel fans are allowing him to regain his confidence for the role
Plus in the original it’s like, “who’s the old man? I guess that’s Anakin?” It makes more sense to use Hayden because the audience instantly recognizes him as Anakin
@@nap0038 Don't forget that Hayden Christensen is coming back to play Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi. But it's nice to hear Hayden is going to be in the Ahsoka series.
9:12 Lucas deleted the Biggs scene because red leader mentions Luke’s dad or something that didn’t make sense on the continuity. They edited that with a super clever hidden cut in the special edition. Look it out
Also in the comics, Vader finds out about Luke being his son right after a new hope. He hires Boba Fett to find out the pilot who destroyed the death star. He fails to capture Luke but gives vader the name "Skywalker"
Ok Schaffrillas, HEAR ME OUT: Hayden in the ending of ROTJ is a GOOD THING. His Hayden age/appearance was the last time he was actually Anakin (other than the right before he died, but I doubt anyone wanted to see him as a pale scarred man when he was a ghost), so it actually makes more sense than the regular old man in the original version, as he never looked like that when he was alive
He only looked old because he turned to the dark side. If he’s all healed up, that should include terrible stuff that happened to him when he turned. He was deformed and scarred which forced him to use the dark side and that fucked up his appearance more. Also, the majority of characters that knew him, including when he was Vader, would think of the young Anakin.
@Bad Boys Boogie Vader saying Noooooo! Was a reference to Luke’s Noooooo! In TESB and obviously Vader’s Noooooo! In ROTS it was George Lucas making the story rhyme, and in my opinion doesn’t effect the impact of the scene in the slightest. As for the rock in-front of R2-D2 first of it wasn’t CGI it was an image of a real rock digitally inserted in, and the change is unnoticeable and doesn’t hurt the scene in the slightest, it is incredibly unnecessary but that doesn’t make it bad, I’m sure George Lucas had a reason he wanted it there
Fine, but if we’re going to be this pedantic, let’s start cutting out Alec Guinness from that scene too and replace him with Ewan McGregor. Obi Wan stopped being a Jedi the day he lost Anakin and the whole order fell. Boom. Now we have Hayden, CGI Yoda, and Ewan standing there like the scene is straight out of Attack of the Clones.
one thing i like about the special editions as a whole is at the time it made watching the ot and the pt together a more visually cohesive experience… i think if they did a new special edition of the ot and the pt to make them more visually cohesive with the st it’d be really cool
We need the extended phasma vs finn fight and Luke grieving han's death, cut a little bit of kanto bight or whatever that planet is called and fix the entirety of episode 9
I remember Shrek 2's very vividly, basically the entire menu was a short little scene of Donkey breaking the 4th wall and dissing the title. I waited out the dialogue to end every time as a kid.
I am honored and very humbled to say that I have the complete series of the Star Wars 2 part dvd series you talked about. What's even more frustrating about some of the bad changes is that George Lucas said something along the lines of "it's barbaric to change films after release" when they put black and white movies in color
He was referring to studios colorizing the films of long dead directors, he didn’t have a problem with living directors changing their own films by choice
The difference is the intent of the creator. Most black and white movies were released with the intent of them being black and white. George Lucas released the originals with the intent of improving them once he has the technology for it.
I actually find it funnier when there are only like 6 stormtroopers at the dead end. It's kind of like the stormtroopers realized "wait why the fuck are we running from this guy? We easily outnumber him". And then Han's reaction to them not being scared of him any more is also rly funny
I expect number 1 to having Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor in Empire Strikes Back instead of whatever that monstrosity was in the original version. And what is wrong with Hayden being Anakin and Return of the Jedi? It makes sense since the last time we saw Anakin before he turned to the dark side was in Revenge of the Sith, a younger Anakin. It’d be really awkward for the original version of Anakin to be with Yoda and Obi-Wan since they don’t know that Anakin
well 1) he wasn't the same anakin we saw in the prequels, after all a LONG time has passed in universe and 2) its kinda shitty to just screw over the original actor like that
I’ll keep this but I have more reasons as to why he should look like Hayden. Anakin only looked old because he turned to the dark side. If he’s supposed to be the “healed” version of himself, he should look like Hayden or a slightly older Hayden because he was 45 years old when he died. If Anakin could chose what he could look like, why would he be an old man? The majority of the people that knew him and how when he was Vader, whenever they thought of “Anakin”, they would think of his younger self.
The “close the blast doors” line made me laugh out loud when I saw the Special Edition in the theater. I thought it was a great addition. As it turns out, that line WAS in the 1977 Theatrical Cut, but only on the Mono Audio version. I had only heard the stereo version.
Finally someone mentions how great the “bring my shuttle” line was
I always hated that change
Loser
You can tell that Vader is *really angry* that Luke didn't join him - his own son rejecting him hurt the man underneath all that armour

The original Biggs scene was a lot longer and the other pilot mentioned knowing Luke's father, which is why the scene was cut. They re-edited the scene for the special edition and made another pilot walk across the scene to cut the dialogue mentioning Luke's father (which back then of course wasn't Vader)
If your watching this scene in the special editions, look at R2 in the background and you will see the difference
Then why didn’t they edit it to avoid breaking the pace in the original version? Was it technological limitations of the time?
@@deleetiusproductions3497 I guess since the other Biggs scene (where they talk about the nationalisation of the economy) got cut, this one had to go as well. The mention of Luke’s father at that point (after Ben‘s death) was unnecessary to the third act of this movie anyways, so they probably decided to delete the scene altogether.
Same I watched them in "order" and seeing Anakin again was so satisfying
agree as someone who loves the prequel trilogy seeing hayden, and coruscant and naboo in return of jedi ending really made me happy
I also watched them in story order, so I really don’t mind Anakin being there as Hayden Christian
@@Deathpool_04 Yeah that makes a lot of sense

"Luke, you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together, we can rule the galaxy as father and son." This comes right after the greatest reveal in cinematic history:
"No.
Sebastian Shaw you mean?
@@evandobrando3313 Yea, lol. I’m such an idiot. I’ll fix it now
It does make more sense for it be Hayden.
@@Deathpool_04 Agreed.
@@Deathpool_04 How does it not make sense? He was an old man when he died. Obi-Wan doesn’t get to be Ewan McGregor
How did you do it?
@@musikafossora you would want to ask a person like Van Ling who designed the menus. He created them. I only know how to break them.
Biggs isn’t the one to say that, the old guy who walks up to them does.
@g.williams2047 That makes even more sense then doesn't it? Someone older probably would have known Anakin, possibly even from when he was still a slave.
But idk
honestly squarespace should've let you keep reading the actual ad in the Palpatine voice. would have been much more convincing me of their product smh
I was hoping the ad would be entirely in Sheev’s voice. My disappointment is immeasurable now.
“Sheev Palpatine”
What a terrible name.
@@rimfire8217 Coming from the series that also brought you Kit Fisto, Sy Snootles and Elan Sleazebaggano, ol' Palps got off light

@@akorn9943 That’s exactly why they should be on Disney +

You don’t want to watch them, the Special Editions are so much better to spit what all these nostalgiatards will tell you
I actually like the Jabba scene in “A New Hope”, for one we get this gem of a line from Han, “Jabba you’re a wonderful human being.” Second I think it adds to the story by showing Han and Jabba’s relationship.
That was originally a cut scene from a new hope i think back when java was a human
@@Lanetgm Jabba was never meant to be a human, that was a myth. His human actor was just a placeholder, the scene was cut because they couldn't finish the VFX in time
Am I the only one who thinks that Schaff’s avatar looks like it’s been put through Remini today? It looks really high quality
A change not mentioned here that I think is good: making it so the Ewoks blink. I've always found Ewoks adorable, but it's kinda creepy how they didn't blink
16:20 I honestly laugh when people try to say this version is better. It’s not subtle or mysterious, it’s fucking boring.
I might be alone on this, but I actually enjoy Boba Fett flirting with the twi’lek girls in Jabba’s palace. it gives his character, dare I say? A little bit more depth which he sorely lacks in the OT.
Haydens ghost showing up is one of the better changes, fight me.
I agree--setting aside the audience recognition, it's who he was as Anakin.
@Topside’s Cinecade you just can't win with Star Wars fans, easily one of the most toxic fanbases there is
I could defend it because that version of Anakin never existed
@Topside’s Cinecade I would argue the old Anakin was better _because of_ continuity. Vader re-became Anakin before he died, so the last time he was "Anakin" was when he spoke to Luke before he died. Having Hayden Christensen there actually breaks continuity imo.
No fight is needed
Bro went from the galactic emperor
To a fucking bug
Damn
Bro went from boss to minion
I mean, Vader shouldn’t have eyebrows anyways, he got them burnt off
I mean by that logic Hayden should be the only version of ghost anakin
Didn’t expect someone to speak positively of the special editions, even if you still hate them.
The last time anakin’s Jedi form was in the prequels, him retaining his last physical appearance as a true Jedi like obi wan and yoda upon their death was beautiful
So when he became vader he lost studs and wasn't a true Jedi anymore?(joke btw)
Look it out
11:26
Fixed timestamp.
Is the cut shown in the footage here?
All the Special Edition changes Jedi Rocks included were good, I will die on that hill
As for the rock in-front of R2-D2 first of it wasn’t CGI it was an image of a real rock digitally inserted in, and the change is unnoticeable and doesn’t hurt the scene in the slightest, it is incredibly unnecessary but that doesn’t make it bad, I’m sure George Lucas had a reason he wanted it there
Cordially disagree
Fine, but if we’re going to be this pedantic, let’s start cutting out Alec Guinness from that scene too and replace him with Ewan McGregor. Obi Wan stopped being a Jedi the day he lost Anakin and the whole order fell. Boom. Now we have Hayden, CGI Yoda, and Ewan standing there like the scene is straight out of Attack of the Clones.
14:28 Yoda speaks slower basically because he gets depressed as the war drags on and he fells the dark side growing.
Then why is he “happier” during the OT?

I miss having fun, creative DVD menus, that actually had substance and content. Finding Nemo’s was one of my favorites.

What's even more frustrating about some of the bad changes is that George Lucas said something along the lines of "it's barbaric to change films after release" when they put black and white movies in color
He was referring to studios colorizing the films of long dead directors, he didn’t have a problem with living directors changing their own films by choice
Nice pfp :D
The difference is the intent of the creator. Most black and white movies were released with the intent of them being black and white. George Lucas released the originals with the intent of improving them once he has the technology for it.

I actually find it funnier when there are only like 6 stormtroopers at the dead end. It's kind of like the stormtroopers realized "wait why the fuck are we running from this guy? We easily outnumber him". And then Han's reaction to them not being scared of him any more is also rly funny
Ah, the special editions. The ones that started the whole Star Wars love-hate relationship from the fandom.
That'd be Return of the Jedi. People REALLY hated the Ewoks back in the day. Also the Christmas Special...
The majority of the people that knew him and how when he was Vader, whenever they thought of “Anakin”, they would think of his younger self.
darth vader and palpatine talking about squarespace was the best part
