I can assure you service members don't pay for anything medical (unless they want too like contacts), room and board, or food. This guy is lying about how much he pays for.
For 1800 a month food, room and medical should be included for free. Also they charge 1000 for 2 prsns to stay in the barracks which is basically a bedroom? Ridiculous.
You misunderstood.... Hes saying you get 1800 a month, but if you think about it, its more like $2700, its just that $1800 is what you get paid a month afterwards
He’s really wrong about this and how it works, or at least is explaining it really poorly. It is free, you just get payed extra if you don’t live in the barracks with a galley lol
This short kinda misrepresents that. When he says 1800 that’s his total take home after deductions including tax and sgli (life insurance) or anything else. On top of your base pay are allowances like BAH (basic allowance for housing) and BAS (basic allowance for subsistence). BAH changes depending on a lot of conditions like rank, marriage, or location, but when you live in the barracks it’s set to like 30 dollars and they charge you 20 dollars for the barrack. BAS doesn’t vary much, I think it just raises with inflation, but when you live in barracks at least 90% of it is taken for on base dining. Included in that is effectively unlimited food at chow halls/mess halls/dining facilities, but how they run it varies from base to base. Also there’s no getting charged for health insurance, that’s again this marine not really understanding his LES (leave and earnings statement). He might be looking at the taxes section which show your FICA Medicare taxes or the SGLI. There is no deduction anywhere for health insurance. And pay is also not first week and last week, it’s the 1st and the 15th. If those days fall on a weekend or holiday, you get paid the duty day prior.

It is called BAH( basic allowance for housing). It's separate from base pay. It shows up on your pay stub but not on your check if you leave on post. Is not taxable, the same as with BAS(basic allowance for sustenance). Pay cows up with rank and time. I recommend joining earlier when you have fewer responsibilities and bills.
Bah is only for those that live in housing, barracks doesn't get taken out like that, chow gets taken out before your check, same with medical dental, life insurance, gi bill (for the first year in)

More people should join the military. I did 4 years, but the free education and disability got me in a better position than most now. Plus I was only 18-22. That time is over before you know it.
Let that sink in! As civilians a lot of us bring home more than $1800 a month. And all we do is work a 9 to 5. These men and women put their lives on the line and only bring home barely enough to stay above poverty. I really hate how some aspects of our government works.
It is called starting from the bottom. After that use your GI Bill, get a good GPA and eventually you’ll be at 100k. All because you’re a Vet who went the extra mile. Military service is a step, you don’t have to make it a career. Learn the tools and succeed in a different field.
Exactly what I am doing right now. I left the Marines, and the GI Bill and disability combined pay me more than what I made while active duty. Now I’m about to transfer, get my bachelors and get a better paying career.
@@IHazReach69 Hell yeah. One thing I might recommend since nobody told me, look into community colleges for certifications related to your field/trades you want to get into, GI bill covers approved schools for CE courses and most are only 6 months long.
I was an Infantryman in the Marines. I served for four years and deployed three times to Asia and Australia and those four years were an education on life, not a classroom with four walls and a door. As military members, everyone pays taxes that is how the revenue is collected. I have zero regrets for having served four active duty years in the Marines and two Army reserves. I completed my degree in Political Science/International Relations and landed a good job. If I could do it again, I would have stayed in the military.
That’s the base pay for a a E1 private with only 4 months service at basic training. After 4 months it go up more and more according to rank and time in service. Basic housing allowance can be a big bonus if you live off base and what part of the country you live in. A E4 with 4 years of service can make $3 grand a month with free health care and if you add BHA can be more. This video is a little misleading.

It's not coming out of your pay. It's allotted in your name. They are paying it for you. They just have to show it on your LES in order to account for their budget. You still get all of your base salary minus tax as defined by Congress
That's one thing that pushed me away from service. You get a lot of "free" stuff like housing, food, etc. but it's still such a small amount of money at the end of the day
I feel like they should raise the pay a bit more and make it bi weekly if your branch is usually the most used like marines or army should be paid more then coast guard
the pay is low. However it’s not even the 1/2 full story. The military has several pay system. what he is talking about the base pay for a entry level individual with no dependents, living in the dorm. The base pay and bonus are usually the only thing taxed. Another common pay is housing and subsidy pay. So someone that has been in for 5 years can make $6k a month, free medical, free dental , free sick leave, and other benefits.
bro wtf- coast guard didnt charge me shit for room and board, if i wasnt in gov quarters i got housing allowance, and when i had to buy myself food i got food allowance jesus christ im glad i joined the coast guard
Same for me in the Army, barracks was free we even got food and clothing allowance for 1 new uniform per month. People with families either got free on post housing or they got B.A.H. ( basic housing allowance) to cover off post housing expenses.
They probably do charge you, but like the guy in the video said you cannot see it. They deduct housing and food costs from your actual salary before giving it to you, so you cannot see all the expenses. I guess this system saves a lot of administrative work.
When I graduated Parris Island after 13 weeks I thought I was going to have a nice paycheck. But then they gave us the bill. They had charged us for all our uniforms. 2 sets of boots. Our toothpaste and boot polish. We made about 30 cents an hour to go thru that hell.
Its not minimum wage my guy. You assume people are working 8hr days 5 days a week. It's more like 10-14hr days. Most bases I was at we were working a 6 and 3. 6 days on 3 days off but one of those days off is a training day so yeah that's an actual 8hr day of work
Yeah my dress uniform and duty U, boots ect plus toiletries were all charged I left BMT with $400 for 8 and a half weeks gotta get em pressed and cleaned, too. So yeah.
Fact check (from an enlisted military member): 1. He's a Lance Corporal (E-3), not a Corporal (E-4) based on the lapel on his collar. Also, as an E-3, his base pay is ~$2500 a month, not including bonuses and deductions. Pay will increase based on rank and time in service. 2. All military members are paid on or a couple days before the 1st and 15th of every month (some get paid a day early based on who they bank with, likely USAA or Navy Federal, as well as whether those dates fall on a weekend or a federal holiday). 3. Since he's living in the barracks and getting sustenance from the chow hall, he is not receiving any allowances for housing or sustenance yet. The basic allowance for sustenance, or BAS, is the same for every military member, around $350 a month, and the basic allowance for housing, or BAH, is based on rank, location, and marital status, but can range from $600-$5,000. In his case, he's most likely not receiving about $1,200 a month from BAH and BAS. He can ask his supervisor or CO about receiving those. 4. Medical insurance and care, through TRICARE, is free for all military members, with no hidden costs.
You dont have too! Talk to your commander about living off post i did as a PFC but i had already been awarded three separate medals before i made E-4. I was an excellent soldier.
@@shannonhawk1431the government pays, then takes the money back, where does the money that they took went to? You seriously think that the money they took was going to improving the barracks and food quality?
My son is in the Australian navy he's on about $80000 ($55000USD)a year, but he doesn't pay for food, healthcare, optical, he can get free room and board for free if he lives on base but he stays in defence housing which costs him about five hundred a month, this includes utilities. He is currently doing training in another state, for which they paid for his travel costs. He also receives 15% contributions into his superannuation (401K equivalent), which is additional to his wages.
1. DOD pays everyone on the 1st and 15th not first week and last week. 2. Enlisted troops do not pay for room and board. If married or senior enough, they get an allowance for housing and another for food (above base pay). The allowance for food may have to be repaid if the soldier is fed by the military (in the field, etc). 3. Active duty soldiers do not pay for medical or dental coverage. So pretty much everything he said is wrong, maybe purposely, but he probably just does not know.
I want to take this opportunity to give a shout out to our true and honorable men and women in uniform, because they CERTAINLY aren’t doing it for the money. God bless our troops!
Hes telling it wrong that you get 1800, he forgot to mention bah and bas which is additional funds based on location. So that 1800 is free money and bah/bas is used towards food and room/board.
In the army the same discussion came. They tell you housing was included and $100 supplement for grocery every monrh if married and $100 annual uniform money. Also MREs in the field.
The way he worded this is incorrect. I am now a veteran, but we get paid our base pay, which in his case is $1800. Then we don’t pay any of what he is saying. $1800 goes straight into his bank account and he gets free housing, food, and health/dental. Then when we get to a certain rank we get a housing allowance to live off base, which is based off of where you’re stationed.

The military is a great place to start in anyone's life. Especially if you're barely figuring things out. Paid training most jobs in the military translates to the civilian world. After a year of paying into the GI Bill ($100) a month you get your full GI Bill (36 months of paid tuition, i.e. free college somewhat) During your active duty time you can utilize Tuition Assistance doesn't touch your GI Bill and its $4,000 a year that can be used for college Full Healthcare, which is about $40 a month (typically upwards of $500 in the civilian world) TSP like a 401k with a 5% contribution match (free money) Plus, the background of the military really paints you as disciplined, adaptable, and understands structure. It's a characteristic ALL companies want in potential employees. There is much the military offers not only to you but your family like MyCAA (same as Tuition Assistance E5 and below only) They are fully covered for health insurance, dental you'll need to pay around $35 a month extra for a plan not 100% covered but covers like 80% depending on the service provided. Overall, if you know your resources and take advantage, you can be set up nicely after only 1 contract.

Semper Fi brother, you should get out when you can, you deserve better than how the military treats its enlisted, i never understood why money came out of my pay for a moldy barracks room
The german military pays double to triple that, depending on your position as a normal solider, petty officer or officer, and they are always hiring, love from an ex Bundeswehr Feldwebel
Dude is a newbie...he 's not paying for everything. He is misinformed. 12 year vet here. Your check is free and clear, barracks is free, electricity is free, chow hall is free. You just gotta follow directionsand don't cause trouble. And don't talk too much if you don't know anything, like this Marine.
I always get annoyed by how some veterans make it seem as if we are poor. There are certain things you cant put a price tag on, we app get that, but we got paid to learn a trade akd yhe VA benefits are quite good. And once you nove out of the barrqcks or dorms you make solid money for most locations. My bring home as an E4 was more than my bring home as a full time employee making 32/hr. And i still had to pay a mortgage out of my bring home as a civilian. So many young people refused to believe me until i showed them the paystubs side by side.
They should not be charging for room and board or food for our service members. They also shouldn't be charging for insurance. These are the people volunteering to put their life on the line to make sure that we can sleep safely in our beds. With as much money that we spend on defense budget this is the least we could do. Unfortunately most of the money is already going to multi-billion dollar corporations instead of the people that actually serve.
I was an E4 in the US Army in 2006 and made around the same amount he’s making now , after all these years you’ll think an E4 like the fellow Marines will make more in 2024 than I did in 2006 .
Always better to get the housing allowance an rent with a few friends. Then you can keep your entire check for whatever you want. All you have to pay is utilities then.
What he's saying isnt true. Everyone gets a base pay. BUT everyone gets a housing allowance and food allowance on top of that. If you live on base, they take those away. If you live off base, you get those allowances in addition to your base pay. You also get a uniform allowance and your medical isnt that much. But you still pay federal taxes. State taxes may be exempt depending on the state.
For example, we can use BAS. BAS is basically a grocery allowance of $200ish+. You don’t receive BAS if you eat at the dining facility since it’s “free”. But when you receive BAS you no longer can eat at the dining facility for “free” so they give you your BAS to cover for your groceries. Technically they charge you, you just don’t see it. It’s like most company healthcare plans. You pay for it, but you never see it come out of your check, except the military does it for everything.
Wow,all that and you could get disabled or dead and come home and end up homeless! That’s not even $24,000 a year! GOD bless our Military that keeps gives us the freedom we all take for granted EVERYDAY!
He’s saying, after everything is deducted, he has $1800 left in his paycheck. Just stating it for the people that think they still gotta pay extra after the $1800. Still think they should get paid more but that’s my opinion.

Are taxes should be paying for that not us.
Crazy, they say they got a military budget but are soldiers paying for that. SMH

Edwin,
You have a good understanding of foresight.
This video is a little misleading.

the pay is low. However it’s not even the 1/2 full story. The military has several pay system. what he is talking about the base pay for a entry level individual with no dependents, living in the dorm. The base pay and bonus are usually the only thing taxed.

Fact check (from an enlisted military member):
I thought the basics is 3000
$450 a week to risk your life for a corrupt country that couldn’t care less about you is crazy

After a year of paying into the GI Bill ($100) a month you get your full GI Bill (36 months of paid tuition, i.e. free college somewhat)
During your active duty time you can utilize Tuition Assistance doesn't touch your GI Bill and its $4,000 a year that can be used for college
Full Healthcare, which is about $40 a month (typically upwards of $500 in the civilian world)
TSP like a 401k with a 5% contribution match (free money)
Plus, the background of the military really paints you as disciplined, adaptable, and understands structure. It's a characteristic ALL companies want in potential employees.
There is much the military offers not only to you but your family like MyCAA (same as Tuition Assistance E5 and below only)
They are fully covered for health insurance, dental you'll need to pay around $35 a month extra for a plan not 100% covered but covers like 80% depending on the service provided.
