The thing I love best about Embryonic is that it's just so loud and cutting and abrasive, but at the same time it's so thoroughly melodic. I didn't think that could be possible until now, haha. It's nice to see how it's done!

I agree with Polykuromu, this is so melodic but very heavy at the same time, its one of those records I can just lay on my bed and listen to and let my mind wander, I actually listen to it a lot while I'm at the gym of all places.

I think he's saying that rather than having the complete song with the intricate chord structures in place and then adding depth and sonic interest with spacey effects and production (as on The Soft Bulletin, perhaps), on Embryonic they've started out with the freaky noise and spacey, repetitive riffs and THEN built the song and chord structure on top of that - e.g. 'Hex', repetitive bass + Can-esque drums, THEN jazzy Miles Davis chords on top.
That's how i interpreted it anyway. :-)

Embryonic is my favorite Lips album. The Flaming Lips were wondering out of my field of taste with overly poppy albums in the 2000s. They brought me back in close with this one and the follow up cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Good stuff!
