- Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Ever wondered what crew member's cabin looks like on a cargo Ship?
Tour a crew cabin board a Maersk container ship / cargo ship. Junior officers and unlicensed crew members have similar rooms on this ship, just on different decks. Senior Officers and the Chief Steward have larger rooms with adjoining offices that create much more living space.

This is nicer than any apartment I've ever lived in.
'ell of a lot more room than I had on the Destroyer!
It’s even more room than I had on an Air Force base, lol.
There is only 23 crew on ships even as big as 400m long.
A lot more room when I served , I had to share a hammock with three cabin boys, I became a Catholic priest after
@WANG DONG nothing's going to stop that
Damn man, nicer, and especially larger, than I would expect.
Didn't realize that crew quarters would be soo nice with lots of amenities ! Thanks for the tour 👍
This has me wanting to book a cargo ship and NOT a cruise ship.
Very good video. Thank you.
You can. There's a few videos about it. I don't really know how safe some ports are though. Singapore and Hong Kong were good but the USN warned us in some ports.
There are none available because of the pandemic😞
Oh yes you do
How do that stay on the ship with that winds and waves hitting it
But this isn’t a vacation trip, it’s called working
I lived on an aircraft carrier for 3 years a long time ago. I was curious about cargo ship accommodations, so I looked up and just watched several. I want to thank you for doing an excellent job. You went slow, paused the camera when necessary and explained what I was seeing. Amazingly there are other vids with a lot more views that did not do any of this. Also, thank you for not overdubbing your video with useless, loud, goddamn, MF music. I do not understand why people feel the need to ruin real life videos with MF music. Excellent job!! 10/10 BZ!
Kith
Yeah, that MF music…. and that damn FM music too!
@@neverhungryagain2187 Fool! Delete this pointless post.
In all honesty, I completely agree with you about the music. 99% of the time, it’s music a cannot stand. But even if it was music I love, it would certainly be music someone else wouldn’t like. I get the need for music in certain types of videos. But for stuff like this, you’re totally right - unnecessary. We’re here to learn something. Just speak clearly and focus on why you made the video (why we’re here) and everything will turn out quality. This guy makes some really informative videos and I really appreciate it.
There’s a couple other guys that I also think make some damn fine videos on the subject. They use a little music every now and then, but I don’t think it detracts from the quality. You might want to check out Joe Franta and Northwest Sailor.
Cargo/Supply/Container's Ship Crew: This Is My Crew Cabin....
Cruise's Line Crew: Hot Damn! That Is A Frikkin Penthouse!!!
when i was a young man, i worked as a security guard for APL at port of tacoma. there was one crew member that saw me (obviously cold) one night and offered to let me warm up in his cabin, since the window was just 2 feet from my post. those cabins weren't nearly as nice as this, but better than i imagined.
Suspect 🤔... you went to warm up while on the job?
@@neverhungryagain2187 his cabin had a porthole right next to where i kept my post. also: i was to patrol, including the ship.
Milne Bay Province sailors from Papua New Guinea would love this.
Interesting.. Yeah I'm gonna need more of this _subscribes_
glad to have you!
This works because, in spite of its huge size, the ship carries a tiny crew of only 23.
Thank you!i hope you'll give more tour in ships!
Ship is my home and the sea is my playground....
I sailed USNS as a navy man. Damn near as nice as this. And the chow was fantastic.
Even this isn’t as good as a Matson ship, especially the new ones like the Lurline or Matsonia. When I was on there last year we had an amazing Steward department and had the most perfect Pho once a week, and the food was legitimately better than anything else I had on a ship before. Matson does everything better.
It's actually a lot nicer than I expected.
Nice. Thanks for the tour.
Very nice living space, thanks for the tour. On my old boat SSN 652, the entire Wardroom would be living in your cabin. Now exactly where is your call button for Room Service?
Glad you enjoyed it! Merchant ships tend to have much larger crew cabins than navy ships because there are so fewer people onboard.
The small rooms on the navy ships were to stop you having sexual relations with the others
@@jusb1066 Well shipmate, you must be talking about the Paint Locker being rented by the hour. I heard it from a guy, who heard it from the Command Master Chief…it must be true!
Bigger than most cruise ship rooms. Great vid, thanks!
Good enough for me! I'm ready to sign on
If people realize the product they get are on ships and what it takes to get to them. They may take inconsideration of what it entails. Fascinating and humbling of where these people are, how they work, and the fact it is not that easy. I watched one of your videos that went from top to bottom and all that it entails. To imagine all that work put into building that ship and everything fits together to do the job it needs to do. Thank you.
I spent nineteen years at sea and never had a cabin so spacious and with a fridge and a comfy sofa. 😏
Would be also cool to see what kind are the senior position people's cabins like.
Hi Sir :-D... Thank so much for bring us to the tour a crew cabin room board a Maersk cargo ship. Nice to see it.. Keep up your good work..., Safe Sailing...!! :-)
Actually quite a bit of room. You also get a pretty nice couch and an arm chair. Lot better than what a Navy Sailor usually gets.
like a 3 star hotel room ... better if have sea view 🤣🤣
Wow the room is huge
seems pretty good to me
More luxurious than my room in college and twice as big.
Muy buenos tus vídeos, felicidades
very comfortable room to rest after work
this is way nicer then a cruise I was on in antarctica
I’ve always wanted to sail to Antarctica. My union has a contract to sail a supply vessel down there every once in awhile to outfit the scientists working there.
@@BryanBoyle sailing through icebergs really is pretty cool, there’s an incredible amount of wildlife too
Super cool, never seen anyone do a video of that
It's really nice, like a standard apartment.
"Look at me"
"I am the captain now"
Captain Phillips movie ❤️
Good video, will be more intersting to show more places in the cargo ship. Also good that there is no music.
Way more luxurious than my time in the Navy
Very nice to see.Wish u all success.Have a Nice journy
Very nice room with all things you need ... similar to my thinking, cause I dont need luxury stuff.
Nicely organized closet...
Fantastic video,thanks for sharing
Subbed!! Great content. Be safe
Wow, looks like almost double the space of my apartment, and with a private bathroom.
Better than what you get on a Navy aircraft carrier.
😁
Nice cabin!
When I was at sea we had either 4 or 8 berth cabins no aircon that’s luxury
If i lived there i would bring my N64 lol
Nice videos sir
Bro at 0:55 the thing which u showed is the most dengerous thing on board
Nice vid pal 👍🏻
Really very nice
Looks good. Bigger than cruise ship cabins.
Thanks for sharing. One question is I would think there should be air conditioning and therefore having a fan should not be necessary.
We do have central AC and heating. The engineers determine when the AC or heating is turned on but each cabin has an overhead damper to regulate cabin temperature. Unfortunately, as these ships are starting to get a bit older, there are issues with the damper functionality so most cabins also have fans to help keep some air flow.
Cargo ship captain cabin tour next?
Thank you for the cabin tour .. very nice 🙂.. btw i want to ask about the handphone. May the crews and captain use the handphone for video call to family and friends ? is the ship cargo have the wifi too ? Hope for the other tour on ship, sir
You’re welcome! We have satellite phones available for crew to call home. There is also WiFi onboard and depending on how many other crew members are using it at the same time you can do video calls as well!
Good insight.
I imagine you all stand watches like we did in the navy probably two in ops and two in engineering? No going out on deck at night or heavy sea state. I didn't see anything to seal the fridge shut so it looks like the ship does not tilt too much?
It's my dream to go on a passenger cruise on one of those giant container ships.
Don’t bother with passenger cruise ships unless your about 75 retired and like cheesy entertainment every night.
I notice that you have paper stuffed behind the pictures, I guess this is to stop them from rattling round in high seas? I'd probably spend half the night fixing noises like that. 😂 Great videos and thanks for sharing Bryan! Also, what keeps that fridge from turning over in rough water, do you have it strapped to the wall?
You will find pieces of paper or cardboard in cracks all over the ship! It’s nice to have a cabin that has been “soundproofed” over the years. The fridge is strapped down too
Thks
Very interesting. The room is of a good size and it even has a fridge!! Glad that you all have wifi. But is the connection good and always available?
I think the wifi connects to Satellite ... so would be slow ...
WiFi is relatively new for us at sea with my companies. It is fast enough to do email, make WiFi phone calls, browse the web, send texts etc. Depending on how many crew members are using it at the same time, you can even do video calls from time to time!
@@BryanBoyle that’s great! I guess the connectivity would help a lot.
Just wait until Starlink is fully deployed!
Work on a deep sea fishing boat... you have way nice accommodation man fuck...
That's a great little room. I didn't expect individual sweets with a head. I thought it would be more like a dorm at uni.
Looks bigger than my apartment room
Idk why they bother with a sofa. Just give me a nice rocker-recliner! If I were single and they'd let me keep a little dog in the room I'd do this in a heartbeat!
Nice... New subscriber here... Keep Safe Sir
That's bigger than my apartment lol...I need a new job
What is the easiest way of getting work on board a cargo vessel like this? I’m working on getting my MMC now and this is a dream!
That's a lot of room for a "cabin"!
Nice 🙏👍
Better than princess cruises inner deck rooms
Nice :) new sub
Thank you and welcome to the channel!
Bigger than many New York and London apartments ?
Beats having to sling a hammock!
I wouldn't be able to sleep with that loud hum in the background
You get used to it. It turns into white noise for us
You do the housekeeping on your own?
No idea that you had your own room. On a cruise, staff usually shares room.
Yea everyone on these cargo ships has their own cabin. There’s only 22 of us so plenty of space for individual cabins. I worked one contract on a cruise ship and was fortunate to have my own room as an officer, but I remember most crew was as many as four to single cabin.
Basic but so much more room than a cruise ship cabin. If your staff you can have two or three to a cabin half the size of that. I’d much rather sail on a container ship any day to a cruise ship because you have so much room in your own personal cabins.
Better then some of the apartments i have lived in , a bulkhead is a wall in sailor talk?
Yeah the cabins are a decent size! Bulkhead is the wall on a ship
True sailors do not say rooms but say cabins just like they don't say boat instead of ship. Have been to sea many years and as crew cabins go that is the nicest and largest I have ever seen except of course the Captain's or engineer.
More people on UA-cam search Ship Room tour than cabin tour. They are also called staterooms.
Fantastic video do ships have a dedicated cook or do the crew have to cook their own meals?.
Thanks! we have a dedicated steward department that has a cook, steward, and steward assistant to cook all meals for the rest of the crew.
Great video entertainment I have a question how do I apply for a job on cargo ship as a merchant mariner here in Orlando Fl?
Hi ... I was just wondering... is the paycheck any good ? Whats the pay rate for an unlicensed crew ? Thanks for the video !
Pay is excellent. Unlicensed crew pay is probably around $300-500 per day depending on rating and overtime worked. Officer pay ranges from $600-1500 per day depending on same factors
@@BryanBoyle sir my life is about to fall apart and I need work and a place to live. Can you explain how to do what you do? I'm very interested.
@@BryanBoyle Very nice! years ago I was going to go 3rd class engineer now I wish I would have followed through...
Do you guys have a cleaning crew on the deck to clean the rooms or you're responsible for cleaning the room and the washroom?
I was thinking about applying for AB unlimited for Maersk. What is their annual salary for Able Seaman? Also how long are the hitches?
Whats an unlicensed crew member?
Isn't there any air conditioner?
Yes there is air conditioning in every cabin as well as throughout the house.
How long would you be living in that cabin? What's a typical cruise duration?
Contracts usually range from around 1-4 months
Are there fire extinguishers in the crew cabins
No but there’s usually 2 to 3 on each deck outside the rooms
Do you have to clean your room after your journey is over or do you have cleaning crews on board?
We clean our rooms, but officers also have the assistance of the stewered assistant to clean our rooms
Wow is the continuous background sound from the engine?
Yes it is!
Yes but it becomes like white noise after a while you don’t notice it. In fact it helps you to drift off to sleep.
This is super cool! What book was in your cabinet? If you don’t mind saying
I’m not sure, that was left in there by the previous officer and I can’t remember what it was. I wanna say it was a Tom Clancy novel though
I wondered if the Gideon's had a left a Bible there, like they do in most Hotel rooms :-)
Luxury compared to my rack on USS Abraham Lincoln, where do I sign up!
Yeh I seen those racks on the Abraham you can’t even sit up on your bed their so small for head room!
Does it have AC or just a fan?
Not bad at all ..how many people actually work on a container ship?
Usually 22 on these ships. I just uploaded my latest video that breaks all the positions down if you are interested in seeing that!
Does everyone get a private cabin? I am just used to seeing how two or more crew people are packed into tiny rooms on cruise ships.
Yes everyone gets their own private cabin on these vessels. Occasionally the cadets will have a shared bathroom but still private bunk rooms
@@BryanBoyle I am glad to hear that everyone has humane conditions. That is much better than naval ship or cruise ship conditions.
Hii, how to apply galley Steward position your cargo ship
That must be an expensive internet bill for Maersk
Luxury yacht compared to navy ships
What are those plugs on the wall?
Are you a licensed officer?
Yes I am a Second Officer
I probably sound a bit naïve, but that's luxurious! I could probably fit a dozen seamen (at one time) in there, and possibly more, or at least four very comfortable senior petty officers. (Ugh... making a Leatherneck think in Squid terms... ugh lol) I imagine that up on quarterdeck it's nice and spacious for the officers - as you mentioned - but what I would love to see is what the racks for the bottom tier employees. You even get windows and all rather than being below, after all. The lower ratings: their berths are more traditional, six or eight to a room, only a little locker, a curtain for privacy, shared heads... the normal stuff. Or no? I can see that they wouldn't have to hot rack it in the civilian world, but it can't be this swanky... can it?
Honestly, I grew up in the Maritimes and while I know they're nothing today like what we had in the convoy days supplying the war, this kind of blew my mind. I would never imagine the steamers and cargo vessels that I saw along the coast or in Halifax being like this on the inside.
