How To Install French Drains

  • Two weeks ago, we undertook a HUGE project on the farm, installing French Drains on the farm. My friend owns Lockwood Construction, LLC, an excavation company, and he helped me solve our longterm water issues in front of the barn in our livestock heavy use area. First we dug vertical drains six feet deep. We installed geotextile fabric, then round rock, then drain pipe, then more round rock, then crushed rock on top. The vertical drains met with one long horizontal drain which carries the water away from the pasture. I learned to operate an excavator and also learned that ditch digging and shoveling rocks by hand are NOT my favorite jobs, but it is so worth it for the health and wellbeing of the animals. Not to mention, cleaning the barn is now WAY easier.

    I have so much admiration for you Anne. My wife and I hope our daughters will follow in the footsteps of women like her and you. You ladies aren’t afraid to get into the trenches, no pun intended, and sweat it out with the best of that trade. I always have a saying for my wife. “The grass don’t grow under her feet”. Women like you girls are in a class of their own. Keep up the hard work!

    I TOTALLY get the satisfaction I'm sure you felt when you completed this...because I did the same thing a few years ago. I put in 200ft of French drain using only my little 19hp Kubota 4x4, and a rear mounted dirt scoop (made in 1945) that I bought from a scrap yard for $35. Went from swampy to solid dry yard...what a difference! Great Job!

    That is a great improvement on your property & I'm happy for your critters. You didn't mention much about slope, which seems to be easy to find on your land. I'm putting in a drain in my back yard next year. I also plan to rent a sod cutter to both remove the grass and re-slope the yard to better move water toward the drain. One suggestion, if I may. Like you did regarding future drains, always think of other possibilities. Ten years ago when I put in a water line to the back of my property, I used the same trench to run 3 circuits. One of the circuits is a 3-way that can be controlled from inside the house. I now regret not also running a gas and internet line. I'm planning a small sun room/building in the back yard which would have been nice to have the additional amenities.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому

    I have to say between watching videos by you and ones produced by April I am shocked at the amount of energy you both bring to the camera. It would be and I hope you show a video of the end result during a rain storm or the aftermath of any snow melt you have and how this controls the water. I grew up around horses in Maryland and I know first hand the issue with water always pooling around out buildings and animals have a way just like children of finding a puddle of water stand in. Great job!

My local conservation district made a long term plan for our farm, and I’m knocking off all the projects on the list one at a time.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому

      Totally! Permaculture is awesome! We have goals to get some pretty fun stuff set up over the next couple years. So far on the farm, since it was in such poor condition when we bought it, it's kind of just been putting out the hottest fire every week, but we are getting to the point infrastructure-wise where we can start doing some more stuff in the next year or so.

    I have always heard that donkeys need companionship they must have been in heaven with all those pats!
    A couple of permaculture tips on the outside of the fences within reach plant hedgerows of Herbs , medicinal plants, and fruits, tagasaste etc for them to self graze on I did that with my rabbit cage and what ever grew inside the fence was fair game for them to enjoy
    Also as Bill Mollison used to say 1 fully grown Mulberry tree would feed a mature pig over the fruiting season also carob and is excellent to grow in the pen as well the manure feeds the trees and hedgerows and they feed the animals
    Also put a water tank on the side of the shed / barn and gutters so you can collect water, to water the animals without having to work ( Use the float style waterers
    [ www.waterls.com/SheepFountains.htm ] take the plug out the bottom run a poly pipe outside the cage with a tap on it so you can with ease clean out the water bowl) ) from-the run off ( everything on ones property should have gutters and tanks for use on the property the longer yo can keep water on your property the more productive you will be )

      Anne I am to please I love learning and seeking knowledge and what btter than to share it with others it is better to spread help just like cuttings or seeds etc you never know when you might need them back again ( Or something similar )
      Most people are so protective of what they have learnt or ideas that they are not willing to share I tend to think the oppersite and I use the example of as we have become such a tech society what if for example a EMP was to take out All the electrical items in the world
      how would we survive ? if we can share the "Green , Permaculture, & old ways etc" to as many people as we can it will help to keep those memories and the new updated ones alive
      So Anne If I can help you out in any way Just ask ( My email address is on my channel about page what are friends for if you cant help ! (::

      Another Tip Anne that could save you lots of money and work
      instead of French drains, consider Either
      Swales
      ( ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=Swales+ )
      Or
      Keyline Designs ( ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=keyline+design )
      Contact your local Permaculture group or institute it might work out that they can do it for you over a week permaculture course , you would get the job dome free apart from maybe hire of machinery , you would also learn a lot and so would the "Students that PAY to do the course (:
      ( You really need to buy the Permaculture 1 and 2 books btw)
      Have a look at what
      Jack Spirko ( ua-cam.com/users/survivalpodcastingvideos?disable_polymer=1 ) has got going with Swales on his rock hard property in Texas
      I have only got 1/2 an acre herein Rural Western Australia ( the Central Wheatbelt) I live in the Avon Valley ( Toodyay) with hills to my south I am on a grade that runs down to the Avon River 100 meters away my neighbour when I moved in was experiencing run off under her house of water that was pooling and causing mozzies not to mention damage to the stumps
      I put in a swale from west to east to slow down the water and keep it on my property ( I'm on heavy Clay loamy soils that Hold water !)
      I planted fruit trees on the North side of the swale so it would utilize the water that it held back and sunk into the ground and in doing so the trees dropped leaves and my chooks ducks geese bantams I had at the time would scratch in that area adding their own ability to break down all the mulch but adding their own manure in the upside of the swale that provided fertilizer for the trees and not to mention it stopped the water under her house !
      This would be a far better way to solve your water on the property instead of French drains
