  • I'm digging the diy french drains and gutter downspout drains for the pole barn house. I want the water to drain away on the uphill side of the building. I used 3/4 washed gravel for the drain and switched to all solid pipe and just used dirt where i don't need to drain after it gets past the house. I didn't do topsoil to show it in this but it would be good to cover with a fabric on top of the gravel before adding dirt. I recommend this rigid pipe over the black corrugated pipe any day. I worked with an excavator for a year and we replaced a lot of the black pipe that had just plugged up and didn't work anymore. I hope this video may be helpful if you are wanting to dig your own drains.

Looks great, well done..... my land slops towards my home and I am going to have to do a French drain as well. Thanks for including all the tips with the level, why you use the type of pipe you used, and how to orient the holes.

Thank you so much! I’m glad if it helps with some ideas. I know everyone’s land is different but this is what worked good for my situation.

How much did the materials used cost approx., for the distanced covered?

I actually installed this last year so I’ll see if I can do some digging on materials cost. Thanks

    No rainwater collection?

No. I’m not set up for that at this point. I could tap into it in the future and do a tank with pump.

Wasting your time. Pipes must be in a sock so the silt gets trapped. Otherwise silt will block the gravel. You should have surrounded the gravel with construction wrap so the silt doesn’t block the draining of water !

Hey thanks for the info. What I didn’t mention in the video at the time but I talk about it in the video description is where I’m going to do topsoil I am planning to do fabric before I put that down. Most of it is just going to remain gravel. Thanks
