I don't want to go out of my way defending this DLC or Starfield i general, because i don't love either, but it does depress me that many people, not just reviewers, slavishly follow the critical path then complain they don't understand what's going on or that the game is too short.

I blame content creators too for not being diligent. Yes, Bethesda should have let reviewers get access, and you could argue that it's a content creators job to get reviews and content out, but it's also their job as reviewers to be thorough, and to provide fair analysis of the product. But for many views > credibility it seems

I think the actual critiques of the expansion hold up, but we'd also be remiss not to mention the toxic state of gaming discourse now. Influencers actively go in hoping for failure so they can prove a point and get attention along the way. Game quality aside, we didn't have this type of behavior even back in 2015 or 2018.

@@StoneAgeWarfare Yeah, and it's not limited to gaming discourse, I feel like. I don't know if something changed during the Covid times, but the internet discourse in general has felt so much more toxic since 2020 and it's only getting worse. Also, remember how Starfield was getting decent reviews at first and then within a week it was mainstream consensus that the game was worse than Fallout 76? Those were from people who got review codes and spent some time with the game, but after it was released tons of smaller channels started making day one reviews shitting on it, and the trend caught on.
IGN even gave it a 7 back then and everyone jumped to defend the game because it was a lower score than those of other mainstream publications and reviewers, but nowadays if you give Starfield a 7 you'll get harassed and called a paid Bethesda shill.

@@Augusto9588 Yeah. Games media these days isn't about taking time to enjoy a game. It's about rushing it as fast as possible so you can get a review out the door in time for views.

While Bethesda could/should have given some review codes to reviewers in time for them to do a proper review, I still mostly blame the reviewers themselves. They went for low quality clickbait content over high quality content. An early rushed review review might get more and faster views, but it is still garbage.
I see it this way. Who here would rather read and trust a day one review over a review made by Gopher? People WILL wait for trustworthy content.

Yeah, the main quest is around the same length as Far Harbor and Nuka World if you just strictly play it and do none of the side content. However, the key thing I feel is that it FEELS short, and I think its due to how the questline is structured. I don't want to spoil anything, but I feel if the main quest had at least 1-2 more hours of content, it would've felt more fulfilling. As it is right now, it feels short 'cause the pacing feels rushed.

I played it as soon as it went live. I did all the side quests I could find. I did as much dialogue as i could find. "I was well kitted out so combat was fast" but I got maybe 12-14 hours of it. That was doing the dialogue doing the side quests "mostly" and "nosing around" as much as possible.
Granted! I was annoyed with the ending enough that I dont stick around to see if any new things opened up after the main quest was finished.

Starstorm and Penumbra are the only ones, to my knowledge, that aren't copies with slight alterations.

Now, i know i'm a super slow player, this is the case in skyrim with my several hundred hour playthroughs, and it was the case for starfield playing it on release, only having done a chunk of the content and being at 130 hours when i stopped playing (temporarily)
But it's still a tad embarrassing to say i've spent close to 40 hours in the dlc so far? Maybe 30 if the gametime tracker is off
I've done most of the content to my knowledge, mostly just working on the main story now.

Haven't played it. Does the main story lead you to the side-quests?
Thinking on prior DLCs, they often require you to talk to side-quest npcs and have you do some minimum number before continuing, leaving it to the player whether they want to do them all.
As far as dialogue goes, I don't listen to it all. Rarely read terminal entries, rarely deep-dive into conversation trees unless I genuinely care about the character or the location. Usually it's irrelevant or at best a joke. So can understand why reviewers might take the attitude of "I don't care that your dog ate crayons and is pooping a rainbow. Just tell me what to do".

    • @GophersVids
      @GophersVids  2 години тому +3

Side quests are not important for the evaluation of the DLC. Side Quests in Shattered Space feels like filler stuff. They belong in the derailing section.
The main DLC quests is what you have to evaluate.
Shattered Space is an ok Bethesda DLC. Same style as Skyrim and Fallout 4. It's not the worst thing Bethesda has made, but the entire game still lacks depth.
Is there a character you will remember in two or even five years from now on? Andreja perhaps? What if I say Shadowheart or Liara T'soni?

The problem I see is that a lot of these reviewers play with a lower leven character or are exposing themselves for just clicking through the dialogue just to reach that review time.
It has also to do with that what do you expect gets more clicks, a video saying the DLC is amazing. Or one that says it bad, outdated, etc and then most of the vid is talking negative.
People just seem to like to talk negative at this point, because it gets a wider appeal.
On my first time it took me about 20-30 hours doing all the main quest, side, achievements and clearing some of the major locations that didn't seem to have any of those and I had fun with it.
But hey, I'm just a random person here, not some major reviewer with barely time needing to push out for those clicks.
This why I rather watch people like Gopher who been playing Bethesda games for years and actually put some time into it and not just rush it out.
The game isn't a wide appeal ether and does indeed not really follow mainstream, what seems that people wanted with only able to use comparisments to X game as argument that the game is bad. If you like that X game more, then that's fine. Bethesda games aren't a wide cup of tea and their taking risks that dont seem to pull good. Well, unless you like talking negative that is. Content is content as they say.

Let's be real 5 hours of purely main quest dialogue seems absurdly high, like straight up impossibly high.

@@tobiasL1991 no its very believable. I typically skip at least half or 2/3d of the audio because I read the dialogue ahead. Finished main quest in around 6 or 7 hours.
For the record, Andreja alone has over 30 minutes of new dialogue in Shattered space.

@@foxmulder7436 Yeah that's not very concincing, she's literally the most intertwined companion.
Not to mention that would make dialogue almost half of the entire gameplay length of the main quest, which is just not common.

    • @foxmulder7436
      @foxmulder7436 2 години тому +3

@@tobiasL1991 dialogue does indeed take a lot of time, especially considering all options, which are sometimes not accessible depending on certain choice. Action sequences are either moving to locations (can equate to mere minutes) or combat (largely depends on difficulty, perparation, player skills etc). Fast travel use, skipping random encounters can also dramatically reduce the "moving to location" sequences.
There are many hours of recorded dialogue, but most people wont hear all of it or even most of it due to skipping, not selecting all optional lines and lines locked behind certain choices.
A good exemple of people usually skipping dialogue content are the 2 companions. Bunch of day 1 reviews specify that there are no new companions in Shattered space, while the 2 actual companions are literally part of the main questline.

This DLC is competing with Phantom Liberty for $30USD. I expect more than a few hours of a boring campaign and a couple reskinned weapons.

The size of both DLCs isn't that different btw. Phantom Liberty has roughly 30 hours of content for the average player from what i read.
Many people attribute many of the changes that came with 2.0 to Phantom Liberty, which was released a few days before PL.

No new character, no new features, Anjya has no specific conversation, even though she is back on her home planet., and I have a strong feeling it's cut content, because of how little of the race was mentioned in the main game that didn't have any conclusion. It was the same with the tracker missions. Barely fleshed out, then, miraculously, more quests became available through paid DLC, again, giving the feeling of cut content!
