    Harry's known for years when the next coronation was to wait and make this episode. what a visionary

  • @duskplains1235
    @duskplains1235 Рік тому +71

    It’s funny I only am interested in the coronation because I watched the episode as a kid and thought a street party was a cool idea.

      I still think a street party is a cool idea.

      Was in a street party as a kid, went on a bouncy castle, tried to go on the top on an area you shouldn't be on, fell down the side head first into the concrete floor and a very high fall too, very close to possibly cracking my head open from that. 1/10 wouldn't try again

      Back then you didn’t have to get permission from the council, and health and safety first , though!🤣

      I mean, I do definitely get why people criticized the scene where Rose encourages the kid to go back to his abusive father, but all the stuff Harry pointed out in here actually kinda pleasantly surprised me

  • @mdatkinson92
    @mdatkinson92 Рік тому +25

    Yeah, it's underrated this one. People go on about the ending saying you have to forgive your parents no matter what, but I think it shows Tommy gaining agency. He doesn't say, "Dad, come back home", he helps him carry his bags away.

    • @dmaxwell910901
      @dmaxwell910901 Рік тому +5

      Yeah I used to agree with the hate, but now I see it more as Tommy rising above his father showing that he's the better man.

    • @kbg12ila
      @kbg12ila Рік тому +4

      People tend to forget when looking at abusive situations like this that they are still parent and child and of course the safety of the child is most important who h is why the dad still left, but good relations can develop in time and the abusive parent can change and stop certain behaviours. Speaking from a child of an abusive parent.

      I like all the elements of the episode, but the wire’s voice is just so over the top shrieky it’s grating and makes rewatches difficult for me.

    Just shows how good RTD's original era was.
    That stories everyone thought were bad or pretty meh at the time, are actually really good and still hold up almost decades later.

    The scene at 6:27 is great, but you missed the amazing Easteregg of the bodyguard in the background. The Doctor makes a quip about I think putting your fingers around your elbow, and just out of shot you see him trying lmao

    It's possible Magpie had a relative and the business went to them when he died. Perhaps it was the then new owners who turned it around in this universe.

    this episode as a kid aboustly terrified me just seeing rose without a face gave me nightmares for weeks

  • @rowanc88
    @rowanc88 Рік тому +21

    I'm sorry.....but are you gonna overlook the fact that Rose tells the young man to go after his abusive father - who has just, quite rightfully, been thrown out of the house by the wife? Telling someone to basically forgive someone that abusive and toxic because 'they're your family' is a really dangerous message to give to young people.

    • @Jeff-qk7jj
      @Jeff-qk7jj Рік тому +6

      My thoughts exactly. It also reflects really poorly on Rose as a person. I guess it's in line with her character (I mean, not in season 1, but it's totally believable for her in season 2), but that doesn't make it any better. It comes across as quite self-centred and ignorant on her part. "Go back to your abusive father because a horrible, abusive parent is better than nothing" is one of the worst lessons, especially when Doctor Who has a fairly high percentage of young viewers. And from personal experience, NO, having an abusive parent is not better than nothing, and I'm sure most people with abusive parents will tell you the same. Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but this whole idea that kids owe their parents respect and love NO MATTER WHAT just because they're their parents is ABSURD.

    A raw force personified like living lightning in this episode and the fact the wire is given presence through something now as innocuous as TV is I think why I like this episode.
    It's similar to a BBC-made Doctor Who audio book I really liked and actually found a little unsettling at times called Dead Air, in which the big bad was described as being just an angry ball of noise that eats sound, called The Hush, that was terrorising a pirate radio station. This episode is the like the tv equivalent to that audiobook's radio themes.

    I have a soft spot for this episode because the Ally Pally tv mast stood at the end of my street, where I saw the first episodes of Dr Who at the age of 9, and from which they were transmitted. Moreover, I used to play literally in the shadow of that structure, and around the then semi-derelict structure of Alexandra Palace., which I always felt resembled a set for some such fantastical story.

      This. Whatever Gatiss' motivations - which I can believe were probably well-meaning - to show that the "right" thing to do in this situation is to forgive an abuser who doesn't show any sign of repenting his behaviour is morally awful and potentially very damaging. You do not owe someone who has abused you forgiveness. Gatiss should have been asked to remove this moment from the script.
