Hey Mike. I finally had the chance to do this for the first time, a few weeks ago. Because my own batteries are AGM's I had to wait for a dead lead acid battery. My father-in-law's one died and I used your method. And it works again. It's a great tip. Have a great week. Dutch regards, Nico.

My VW touran's been cranking slow this week and the battery's down to 12.3-12.4V. Saw your other video using a 200A charger & jump starter and was likewise checking out expensive chargers but today I saw this vid and my brain lit up in an eureka moment because I do have a welder in the house, thanks for saving my wallet!

I got the Amico welder you suggest. I’ve had about 25% success with discarded batteries on our farm. I got a meat thermometer at Walmart & put in one of the cells while it’s “boiling”. It’s December & about 40 degrees, but the temp only goes up 10-15 degrees while the battery is bubbling. So the bubbles are not from boiling, but from hydrogen gas being released. (My assumption). However one battery did get hot; thermometer read 160, so I discontinued the process on that battery.
I removed the working batteries from several vehicles & did the 5 minutes x 3. So far it seems to improve those batteries.
I rekin we have more than 75 batteries on the farm & in family vehicles, so I gotta get this restoration process to work. I’ve tried to restore several big group 31 batteries to put in our Kawasaki wheel loader. I got one up to 13+volts & 1200 CCA, but wouldn’t crank the big diesel, (which takes 2 in series….24v.) So I had to buy a new NAPA $300 battery yesterday & the other battery in the loader is a basic car battery that did recover. That’s in there temporarily until I can get some bigger battery restored.
I’ve tried 3 truck batteries (with threaded posts). One seems to have a bad cell that barely bubbles….it reads 10.5v. I’ve cooked it at least 10 times & up to 200 Amps. The Amico welder exceeds its duty cycle often & it takes an hour for it to reboot itself. So I only go above 100 amps momentarily.
The other 2 truck batteries will show 13+ volts, but weak on the load meter.
I’m getting weak readings on the hydrometer on most of these batteries I’m trying to restore. So I rekin I’m going to drain & rinse them then add fresh acid/water. I get different info about the acid/water ratio….20% acid to 35% acid.
I will NEVER do this trick with the battery in the vehicle. Acid usually bubbles out.
As you mentioned many times, MAKE SURE THE WELDER IS OFF BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE LEADS. This welder is putting out current even if the amps are set at zero. I already blew up one battery. Now my Salvation Army jacket has holes…. And don’t turn the Amico welder off until the cooling fan stops running.
And this: you guys quit asking the same questions that have already been answered….like can I use my AC welder? If that’s where you’re at, just go buy a new batt & watch boring World Cup.

Yep, not all maintenance-free batteries are completely sealed, but you won't know until you check. This is a good one you showed. Takes more effort, but sometimes all it needs is some water and a charge, and you are back in business!
Glad you brought out to use distilled water! I keep a couple gallons at work specifically for filling up batteries.
    🐺🔧
I've done something similar with the scissor aerial lift at work; the operators kept trying to charge the lift. But it wouldn't work once the charger was unplugged. Batteries would have to be ordered, about two weeks out. The inspector that they scheduled was slated to come in the next day. Honestly, they had tried to charge the batteries so much that they were very hot when I got it, I'm sure their lifespan had been compromised, but I figured I give it a go anyway. Either it would work or not, right?
I pulled out all four batteries, refilled the batteries, and was able to get three out of the four batteries amperage back up using the large battery charger. The fourth battery was a little on the low side for CCA, but the voltage returned. Put all four batteries back in after the initial charge on each one, then I let the onboard charger finish the battery charging overnight. Facilities were happy the lift was operational when the inspector came to do the bay doors the following day.
As far as I know, those batteries are still in the lift! 😆

Can you provide what features of the stick welders that you're recommending are responsible working with a deep cycle battery vs. a regular battery? For example, is there a certain type of mode that works best for a deep cycle?....and same question for the regular battery. Also, some of these welders can function at 110V vs 220V......is 220V connection required? Your instructing to turn up the amps until the electrolyte boils....but what is the common/typical maximum setting that you've used?

    • @SweetProjectCars

Some don't have caps and you have to drill the holes. Just be careful to put a depth stop on the drill, otherwise you'll drill through plates and ruin the battery. You can then tape the holes over with some rubber glove material and duct tape.

Interesting video, I always thought that fast charging a battery decreases it's life span and it's best to trickle charge it. I use a Pulsetech PowerPulse passive desulfator on my BMW battery, I have used it three years and have no issue's with starting the car even though I drive about 25 miles a week. I'd like to see you test one long term on one of your sulfated batteries, and make a video on it.

Mike I’ve had the same issues as Albert Yowell has been having. About 25% success rate using the Amico welder. I’ve tried 5 on and 10 off 3 times and 4 times. I put only enough amps to get it bubbling good on all cells. Just did this on my sons battery and it started the vehicle once and then died again. He bought a new battery to solve the problem. Any suggestions? More amps? Maybe enough to get the battery warm on the outside? Please answer these questions, as I’m sure others are having the same issues. I would like to help myself and Albert Yowell. You could really save him a LOT of $$$. Thanks man!

You want to do it at least 5 times. Crank up the amps enough that it is spattering a little bit of fluid out on top of the battery *it should be rolling pretty good when you do that so make sure you do it in a well ventilated area. Hello Mike. Wishing you a happy new year from Bulgaria. The contents of your battery vids have seriously impressed me, so much so that I think that this could be a business idea for Bulgaria. A population with relatively little disposable income, inflation, energy crisis and more issues than I would care to mention, this is something that the country could really use! The obvious environmental benefits are the icing on the cake.
I do have one very important question. If this was done on a commercial basis then I would very much like to give the clients a guarantee on the reconditioned product. With how many months would you feel comfortable giving? 6, 12 or 18 Months?
Please keep the great work going and hoping to hear from you soon. Thanks.

I have a six year old COSTCO battery that's just starting to show signs of replacement (slow cranking if the car isn't driven or charged in two days, longer than two days it needs a jump). I would love to try one of these methods to hopefully renew the battery. I don't have a welder but I do have a good charger so if the only difference is time I'll just use my charger.

Does it need to be a modern switchmode welder? Can I use an older mains frequency (larger heavier coil) type stick welder?

i would suggest that before you try that, make sure the welder output is DC

Please follow the video to a T, there is no other alternative, use the exact same tools, products and method, we've spent years perfecting this process. It works flawlessly every single time using either of these welders for standard battery amzn.to/2K1UsWQ or deep cycle amzn.to/3yW4ihK Thanks for watching, have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC

Have you ever had one that boiled real good on two of the six holes and barely bubbled into the others and not at all and two of the other holes if so was the battery worth trying to save his battery was working fine six months ago and it has set for 6 months now sudden it won't take

    • @SweetProjectCars
      @SweetProjectCars  Рік тому +2

Yes, but you can do this entire process up to 5 times if all of the cells don't boil after that, your battery is toast my friend. Thanks for watching and asking, hope this helps, have a great week and all the best on your project. mad Mike the hammer SPC
