  • This american persimmon was already grafted over to the "Yates" cultivar; but I decided to change it over to "Early Golden" because I already have a "Yates" tree.
    Bark grafts are the best solution for larger rootstock. Check with me later for a follow-up.

    Oh, I see. I must have adapted that from bark grafting pecans. They (TX pecan growers assoc. whatever) actually drive a penny nail through the bark and scion to hold it into place. I don't do that. I never really was shown anything on persimmons, so I just did what I knew how to do.

    The whole purpose of the wound covering is to keep the fresh cut from drying out. If liquid tape would do that, I'm sure it would work. Yes, cutting scion wood and storing in the fridge works great. I wax the cut ends, wrap in a baggie, and stick in the crisper.

    Oh thanks for the advice! I'll try whip and tongue or bark grafts then. Tend to cleft graft my plums/stone fruit because my knife skills are terrible and there's less wind damage. Jiro and Fuyu are still temperate persimmons but are Asian varieties from Japan so not sure if they need more warmth? Melbourne weather is more like LA. Fuyu is nonastringent eaten crunchy and fresh. Large fruit, some of mine the size of a softball. Keep an eye out for them. Cant wait to see you plant/graft more trees.

    A lot of the "no seed" claims are based on pollination. If other trees are around to pollinate, then you'll have seeds. But some varieties are sure better at making more pulp than seed. Are you planting seedlings this spring? If so, grow them up healthy and happy this year. Next year graft with whatever scionwood you can find. I can provide some. I'm all about furthering the success of the American Persimmon.

    Thanks. I've had lots of practice. Yes, these two little scions fit snugly. Maybe I'm getting better?

    Thank you. These are "tropical" persimmons you are referring to, right? I've only cleft grafted 1 American persimmon, and it failed. Whip and tongue is a nice graft if the stock is small enough.

      Would it be that you in a "colder zone" that the graft failed? btw Thanks for your videos, great info for those of us that Want to learn "Fruit Tree Grafting"

    No, on the tree. Bark grafts I do have only one cut, then the scion is placed under one of the flaps.

    The only "bark graft" i've seen was similar to a bud graft where the bark is made with 1 slice and the flaps pulled out to insert a scion that has a tiny shoulder cut high enough that it "hangs" against the stock (inside edge). Then the scion pushed down the inside of the flap bark edges into the cambian against the outer cambian edge of the scion. Then the whole graft is Tightly wrapped in Parafilm and finished with a layer of Coban and grafting wax'

    Is that a new saw???
    I've not seen a double-cut bark graft before. Very interesting.
    I predict a full recovery.

    Yes, I plunked down $20 and bought a decent saw. The old one was burning through branches more than cutting them. : )
    By "double-cut", do you mean on the scion?

    When exactly do you graft persimmons? I understand that is the key to success. Is the rootstock partially/fully leafed out while the scion is still dormant?

    Nice technique! Just wondering if persimmons can be cleft grafted? I've got a very poor setting tree that's very large. It's winter now, but as soon as spring comes i intend to graft it over with some other varieties i have (Jiro and Fuyu). Would a cleft graft work? Keep the videos coming, good work!

    curious. can i use liquid tape? For all practical use it looks and acts the same as what you are using. also, what is the practice for the cuttings? Can i just decide which parent tree i want to graft and cut them in the winter with good shears and place them in the fridge in plastic till its time in the spring to do so?

  • @willfrost
    @willfrost 10 років тому

    I can't tell for sure, but it looks like you dipped the ends of your scion in wax to preserve moisture. Is that correct? If so, could you elaborate. Did you do it when the scion was collected in the winter, before storage in the fridge, or after it was removed from storage in the spring. Thank you!

    • @troutfishholland
      @troutfishholland  8 років тому

      Yes, I dip both ends of the scion in candle wax before storing. I leave the wax on the growing tip and snip the grafting end prior to grafting. Sorry for not answering sooner.

    have you had any luck producing larger fruit with less seeds? I live in ohio and plan to plant 100 persimmons this spring in hopes of grafting and picking which types to propagate in the future.

    Where can I get persimmon wood?

  • @troutfishholland
    @troutfishholland  12 років тому

    Unfortunately, no. For the most part, each tree will only accept its kind. Apple to apple, walnut to walnut, etc....

    hi iam wondering why most of you tube no body say the most important when or wich day he graft the tree pls.its very important ifeel the videos is usles with out saying the day of graft

    • @troutfishholland
      @troutfishholland  8 років тому

      You are correct. That's a basic question I failed to answer in the video. Persimmons are best grafted after green-up, which is a little different than apples. Apples can be grafted much earlier. sorry for the long delay in answering.
