    If your Fiat/Chrysler vehicle is under warranty make sure to use an oil that meets the Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. I suspect Mobil 1 does not.

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  4 роки тому +1

      Great advice there. I can see them not covering a warranty just for that reason. Thank you for the heads up, I will be checking this out.😎

      Thank you for sharing Scott! You are correct mobil 1 does not make the list yet as they have not acquired the certification yet. We very much appreciate you sharing this information to us and the 3.6l Pentastar community.

      jeepoffroadadventures.com/wp/?page_id=787. Good article to see what oil is approved by Chrysler. Although this article is directed at Jeep Wranglers.... Promasters have the exact same 3.6 L Penastar Engines.

    • @Scott_From_Maine

      @@oneadVANtureatatime What's weird is, Mobil Super Synthetic and Full Synthetic have the certification. Why did they spend the money to certify these more obscure brands and not their flagship? Is Mobil 1 actually missing something these engines need? I just got Pennzoil instead.

    • @1977starfire
      @1977starfire 4 роки тому +9

      @@Scott_From_Maine Mobil 1 is perfectly fine for any engine. Certification has mostly to do with money. Most modern brand name oil will work in almost any engine and Mobil 1 is one of the leading brands.

    I removed my oil drain plug, and installed a lever/valve. Now no tools are needed to drain my oil. I love it! I put the drain pan under, push down and turn the lever and the oil comes flowing out. Almost 600,000 miles on my Promaster.

      I just use a fluid extractor pump - silde the tube down the dipstick until it hits the bottom of the crank case, give it a couple pumps and then it sucks out the oil by itself from there. No worry about the the drainplug ever leaking from the valve or from the plug.

    What about a spec for torque on the oil plug? And what about replacing the gasket on the oil plug?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  6 місяців тому +1

      Good questions!
      Definitely check the gasket! Having a spare gasket or new oil plug on hand in not a bad idea. We had our oil changed at a ”un-named” oil lube shop and they over tightened the oil plug....so much that it stripped when we tried to get it off the next time we changed our oil. We had to buy a special tool to get the plug out and replaced with a new plug.
      Tighten it to Goldilocks specifications 😆 not too much & not too little..... Just perfect 👌 we tighten ours by hand. Exact torque number.... You would have to check with the owner Manuel. We have seen it listed at 20 ft.lbs of torque but we are not mechanics and cannot verify that info.
      Hope this helps

    • @thomasd.lefevre2494
      @thomasd.lefevre2494 Рік тому

      Agreed. I use a 6-point short Craftsman 15/16 socket - allows for access in tight space. I'm also paranoid about over-torquing. So I lube the cap threads & O-ring, strongly hand-tighten, then wrench only one more quarter turn. This seems to work well without a torque wrench (which won't fit in that space.) 🙂

    I would clean out inside of filter housing before putting in new filter. And, clean out oil filter cap with carburetor cleaner. Also. Coat the filter tip o-ring with oil. I pour oil in oil filter housing on engine to get oil in the oil pump, therefore no oil starvation startup. Just my thoughts.

    These days especially with top-side oil filters, we do not need to crawl under and drain into oil pans anylonger.
    Just go out and buy yourselves a manual or electric fluid extractor pump and pump the oil out through your oil dipstick.
    The drain tube will slide down through the dipstick and into the bottom of the crank case. So gets the job done easy fast no mess and gets atleast 90% of the old oil out prolly better.
    Im about to do my first change on my 2021 promaster 2500 the part store shows it takes 5.92q of 5w20 to fill it back up. Will update this if something goes wrong.

    Thanks for this informative and well produced video! When I change my oil, I start with refilling with 5 1/2 quarts, run the engine a bit, then check the dipstick. The oil level on the dipstick is always higher than the hatched section. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated, since I'm concerned that I'm overfilling it with oil, even though I put in only 5 1/2 quarts.

    Informative video. We just bought a new '20 Promaster 2500 159wb a couple days ago to do a build. I'm a stickler for changing oil. Keep a record of your changes, receipts etc as the 3.6 has a history of valve train issues. Yours is a 2018 or older I believe by the grill shape. I think they may have had the issue fixed by then but don't let the mfgr get out of warranting it by saying you didn't change your oil often enough. I suggest changing the trans fluid out at least every 25 to 30k miles.

    Thank you for the great video and super tips!
    On p. 155 of the 2018 Ram User Guide under Fluid Capacities, Engine Oil With Filter it lists 6 Quarts.
    I assume your concern is overfilling causing added engine pressure, or?
    I keep all my receipts and record all oil changes which are always done but way before any alarm would ever go off.
    I was watching a program where the mechanic said car mfgrs use engine sensors and a algorithm in their programming that checks mileage driven, speeds, rpms, temperature, oil condition clarity, etc. He suggested if you don't trust a programmer's algorithm merely change your oil earlier.
    I have changed all my cars/trucks batteries every 5 years max on the 72 month battery. I do it on a beautiful day, when I want to, where I want to.

    Beautiful! I was wondering if anyone ever ventured to change the oil like this without jacking up the van. Now I see that there's nothing to it. Would you do the same on a smaller car, with not much clearance below? And what do you think of the "extractor" method? (sucking the oil from above with a hose).

      When we had a small car I just used those plastic ramps and that worked well. I like the idea of pumping out the liquid especially with the transmission fluid. Since there is no drain plug on the Promaster transmission pan.

    Thank you for this video! I'm about to change the oil in our Promaster 2500 van and feel much more comfortable now. I liked the tip about starting with 5 quarts and then adding slowly after that. Do you suggest waiting to change the oil until you get the dashboard message?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  4 роки тому

      I usually do wait for the dashboard message but also perform a weekly fluid check. If the oil is extra dark or black I will change it earlier. If the oil looks fairly clean I will run extra miles even if the oil change message comes up. Hope that helps. 😎

      Hi Andy, we have just learned that the Mobil1 oil brand we used is not on the list of approved oils for 3.6l Pentastar engines and could possibly void your warranty. Check out this link if you have time, there is a list of what oils you can use.

      It is very confusing!! we are using 5w20 as per manufacturer instructions because our van is still under warranty. However, we are showing someone else's experience and what their mechanic said after replacing the engine. Food for thought.... definitely discuss with a mechanic you trust.

    I watched Stan the Van about the oil issue and did my own research and...
    This concerns me greatly because everywhere else like forums, dealer, and most importantly, the manufacturer says to only use 5-20 for very specific reasons. Not saying this is bad information, but I sure would like to get clarification on this and other questions like should you run synthetic, etc. seems unbelievable to me that there are tons of these vehicles out there running the wrong oil! Anyone have any suggestions for clarification of this?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  4 роки тому

      Right there with you! We kept our oil at 5-20 as to not void our warranty.... but we are curious as well. I would love to have a really good mechanic that I trusted to ask! We thought this would be a good topic to discuss....and well....we learn alot from our viewers!!!

      one adVANture at a time - I feel pretty good that I got the best info regarding this that I can because as I said, I contacted dealer and manufacturer and they both said 5-20 “Blended Synthetic” which was the only thing the manual does not specify. Thanks for your content.
