    I learned a trick a few years ago; because the dipstick and oil are both shiny, it’s difficult to determine oil level after an oil change. I sandblasted the end of my dip stick and it solved that issue, to a large extent.
    Thank you for taking the time to do this video, we have a ProMaster on order so after warranty, this will save me $$$$.

      Yes, sandblasting works, or even hand sanding. When you start your build all my videos are by category at ua-cam.com/video/AJGZh6iW5CE/v-deo.html

    Great video. makes an oil change super easy and nearly mess free. All done from the top, no crawling underneath or spilling oil which is inevitable when pulling the drain plug.
    couple of updates for a 2022 promaster...
    1. Recommended oil has changed to 0-20
    2. insertion depth for the suction hose is longer... not really an issue, you can just insert and fiddle with it until the pump runs dry.
    3. Stubby ratchet helps but I was able to put a standard 3/8 inch driver on the 24mm socket and get a click or two per turn. the extra length helped in breaking it loose. a flexhead (craftsman 3/8 in flexhead long handle... my favorite tool) was also helpful.
    Again, thanks for a great how-to video

    Thank you! Going to try this today because my oil pan drain plug is on way too tight to get off due to an oil change place tightening too much. Without jacking the van up, I cannot get enough leverage to get the plug loosened but I like this method better. The measurement is a nice detail, too.

      Yes, once you do it this way you will never go back to crawling under the van again. All the videos can be seen by category at thefrugalfactor.com/

    Thank you so much! (Liked and subscribed to all.) Very happy learning of the pump extraction method. Less grime on my clothes for this girl and more used oil coming out on each oil change. Fantastic video. Going now to view your composting toilet video because we have one of those, too.

      One more thing: What are your thoughts on AMSoil Signature Pure Synthetic? I've heard it specifically helps the RAM Promaster engine make it past 75,000 miles. I've heard horror stories of engine replacements at that mileage or thereabouts, and the answer seemed to be using AMSoil...and frequent oil changes like you do.

    • @deirdre444
      @deirdre444 6 днів тому

      ...and spending the extra 10-20 cents per gallon to run the Promaster on ethanol-free gas is another professional recommendation to prevent premature engine failure.

      I will stick with Pennzoil ultra platinum. amzn.to/3NuVmbj Its easily available as I travel on the road. AMSoil is excellent and wins as shown in this video ua-cam.com/video/TWuKvnCq1js/v-deo.html But the Pennzoil ultra platinum scorecard is close enough for me. I change oil often and I do not let the vehicle idle at low RPM. The Promaster engines do not lubricate roller bearings and rocker arms well at low RPM!

      Thanks - It works really well. It has taken the stress out of changing the oil on the road. I can to it on a parking lot and no one realizes what I am doing. Since I don't need to go under the van!

    Thank you for the video
    Good info
    I personally do use vacuum as well as it allows to drain 99% of oil.
    But be advised that most modern engines that designed to run on regular gas, in small amounts, do consume oil. Especially when they get older.
    For optimum performance Pentastar v6 engines take 5.9 quarts of oil, so my 2 cents to this video would be to put what’s required and not how much was taken out.

    • @FrugalFactor
      @FrugalFactor  10 місяців тому

      I always check the level of the oil with the dipstick. Its the transmission fluid that I carefully measure what is taken out, then put that amount back in. Then with the transmission get to operating temperature and check the level against the manufacturers level chart. Thank You for the comment. Hose insertion/mark: 28.75"
    I drove a few hours before, but not right before pumping. Over 20 minutes to pump it all out.
    Near the end, you can slowly raise and lower the tube to check for remaining oil and get more flow.
    Way better than going to a shop! What year is your promaster, didn't see it on your site or in description.
    Do you think it is worth having a magnetic drain pan bolt?
    Thanks!

    • @FrugalFactor
      @FrugalFactor  11 місяців тому +1

      A magnetic drain pan bolt would not hurt. There is already a magnet in the drain pan - I would keep that one even if you added a magnetic drain bolt. I think Promasters from 2014 to 2022 are the same. Mine is a 2018. Thank for mentioning the typo I will fix that!

    I have all the ingredients, a bit timid to make a go at it… Do you recommend removing old filter, leave the cap off, suck old oil out, insert new filter and cap, THEN add the new oil? Your vid shows replacing old with new before extracting old oil… and then loosing the cap again.

    • @FrugalFactor
      @FrugalFactor  4 місяці тому

      You can do it. For the RAM promaster I recommend this order 1. Remove the oil oil filter. 2. Pump out the old oil. 3. Put in the new oil 4. Put in a new oil filter. By removing the oil filter first and leaving it out, makes it easier for the pump to remove the old oil. After your done run then engine a few moments, the turn it off an check the oil level. That's it. Easy to do, and with the pump you never need to crawl under the van! It can easily be done while traveling in a parking lot.

      @@FrugalFactor ok ! Thank you for the sequence ! I will be doing this while camping hence my hesitation incase something? Goes South!:)

  • @MannyWC
    @MannyWC 5 місяців тому

    Why didn’t you change the filter at the same time. I ‘heard’ it is better to change the filter more often as this will decrease the need to change the oil as frequently. I agree, change the oil 4-5K mi.
    Also your 28 and 3/4” mark, is that the tube length all the way up to the pump or to the top of the oil lid? Thank you~

    • @FrugalFactor
      @FrugalFactor  5 місяців тому

      The tube length is up to the edge of the metal oil dipstick. The first time you do this - after you remove the oil go under and remove the oil drain bolt. If no oil comes out you know you have the correct length of tube. From then on no need to remove the drain plug when changing the oil. Also as you mention in your other comment - the oil filter change is shown in the Part 1 video.

      Yes you can. The oil filter on the RAM Promaster is accessed through the hood. It is a cartridge filter. It is not under the van.
