I really don't mind catching them or smoothhounds not really been sea fishing long though more used to fresh water worse fish I've caught so far was weaver fish didn't know was poisonous till it stung me though
Really nice to see you fish Kessie. I used to travel from Essex ever November and stay with my cousin for a week who lived at Oulton Broad, back in the 80’s. we used to catch some big Whiting then plus loads of small stuff. Not been there for many years so thanks for choosing that location. 👍👍
If you hate whiting, you can always target dabs at Kessingland this time of the year. Very short hooklengths, with sticky black lug on boom rigs should swing the dab to whiting ratio in your favour. Nice video.
Last night maybe 15 whiting on 4/0s with quite large bait intended for bigger species. Amazing how wide they can open their mouths. And indeed, if it wasny for the whiting it eould have been a blank. I was gratefull for the action.
What a great video I love catching Whiting it's better than catching nothing someone Mayer live streams you may only see me catching Whiting but at least I'm catching something that's better than nothing take care safe and see you next time
I'm not from the UK, so are these British Whiting any good to eat? I don't catch fish unless I'm going to eat them...... Plus, there is no fish that can't be rectified by turning into potato fish cakes or coconut laksa soup. :)
Hope ya keeping safe buddy good seeing the beach vids back on been having a bumper cod run up here on the holderness coast and the river Humber providing double figure fish so far
Hi well i must be the odd one out because i LOVE whiting! Pick the right time and tide and there are usualy lots to be caught. Long casting is not often needed, great for beginners and kids. If conditions allow i will use a carp/pike rod with a fixed spool loaded with braid, or in my case Nanoline, a 2,3 or 4 oz grip or plain bomb. Simple 2 or 3 hook simple unclipped paternoster rigs baited with small squid and mackerel strips whipped on with cotton is all you really need and the bait bill is minimal! Double patting to save time and get out again quickly. 4 to 6 fresh whiting, cooked the way you prefer will give the family a great healthy meal, just remember to gut and clean them between casts and put them in a cool box with ice. Great sport, a few hours in the fresh air, and a tasty meal!! You just can't beat it. Kindest regards Bill
@@grahvis Hi I think we could all benefit by using thinner lines, hence lighter leads, lighter rods etc. Granted sometimes we will be forced to use a full blown beach caster with big leads, but if possible lighter gear gives great sport and people should remember that modern carp rods can hit 200 yards
Dog fish are good to eat but they're a pain when you're targeting other species because they'll snatch your bait in a heartbeat and willl do it all day long LOL
Not to mention that as soon as they're on the line they like to roll which Tangles and frays your gear which is an even bigger hassle and headache causing other fish to snap off the line if it's damaged by a dogfish
Caught 42 whiting on Dungeness beach in about 3 hours.would of rather a couple of dogs.it was boring in the end.could nt get past the Whiting to the bigger fish even with bigger baits.
I moved from the UK to the USA gulf coast 15yrs ago and people hate catching whiting here also....no idea why...they make great eating and you can always be sure to catch some, even on a bleak day! Much under rated fish in my opinion
Wow.... Completely different on this side of the pond. We like Whiting (or Sea Mullet here in NC) and abhor Dogfish.... Nice rod/reel setup too. My personal setup is a Penn Fathom 15 and a CTS 1307 13 foot heavy action rod. I use it mostly for big Red Drum (or Channel Bass, Redfish, Spot Tails, etc). Daiwa has a new Saltist line that I want to try too. The 15H is interesting.
You gotta being kidding, Whiting is a quality fish to catch, much sought after. Now Dogs, that is absolutely the most reviled and despised fish in UK waters. Obviously you are not plagued by them like we are, but believe me, after you have caught 12 or more on the trot you will quickly adopt them as your most hated too.
Whiting can be a pain but they are fun for those that enjoy them. I never get bored with doggies even when they appear in numbers. In Suffolk the beach fishing is the best it's been for decades. I had around 87lb of fish in 5hrs only last month and that's as good as anywhere I've fished in the UK. We've lost the cod but gained on rays and hounds.
I don't mind catching them, I just get annoyed because they always end up swallowing the hook. I switched to circles a while ago, but they're annoying to bait up and the whiting end up just swallowing them anyway!
This guy is a very seasoned and experienced angler so I guess whiting are a let down if your big baiting and trying to target the cod !! If you like the whiting do use the small cheap baits 👍👍👍
Confused from u.s. the whiting we have here doesn't look like that, and if you guys are calling a dogfish shark a doggy we bake those as long as cleaned fast. Any idea of other names for said?
Question from across the pond in the colonies. Why don't you British cousins use circle hooks ? Wh as is the legal size of those whiting to keep ? And do you ever use them for bait ? On our side of the pond we have two kinds of whiting , one is a whiting related to the cod and one called a Atlantic whiting or a round head . Cheers
Whiting bloody hate em! especially when you reel them in and they look at you with those dead eyes, pretending not to know how they got there and dangling like a couple of used Johnnies. Nothing says dead winter fishing like pin head whiting
Down here in New Zealand, it's Doggys. Question, your wearing waders why the hell are you running away from the water when you throw your fish back? 🤔🤔😂😂
I like whiting personally - I regularly fish for them off the pier when it's a calm sea and not much else is on the feed. Last week went fishing for whiting (calm sea) and pulled out 2 coddling at 4lb each. A few days later it was a really high tide and had a nice choppy sea (perfect cod conditions) didnt catch any cod at all!
I've only fished there once. Think it was Kessingland sluice. At night in the eighties - We had codling to 3lb and stacks of whiting. The average size was much bigger then. Fishing the ebb tide as we were advised. Hope to return again. It's 180 miles away!
I catch a lot of cod and never waste money on worms - I use squid bluey and bit of cart wrapped up on a pulley pennel rig (massive baits) costs me approx £9 a session.
Nice to see you back Chris, hope your well, little one must be growing now. great watch as always, Chesil Beach must be a drive for you guys, it's 4 hrs drive for me.

I used to fish for whiting off New Jersey in the winter. We could load up the cooler with whiting and ling fishing from a party boat. "Magic hours" were at dusk and early evening. The ticket was a high/low rig with a glow tube and clams.
Nice video, such mixed emotions re the humble whiting . As you say great for newbies and youngsters to cut their teeth on, great to keep you occupied on a cold day, useful down my way as live bait for conger and late autumn bass. But with so few coddies etc to predate them I guess that’s down to us🤷🏻♂️ so ...great eating if prepared in the right way if only as fish cakes , thanks for sharing . ps hate pout and dogs more 🙄😉
Hated? That is as daft as the people who say they hate pike. In the ecosystem, all species play their part as predator or prey. They may be a nuisance species to anglers wanting other species but for many new anglers they are the introduction to a lifetime hobby. I used to fish Kessingland beach fifty years ago. Whiting never let you down for a catch.

They are excellant eating. Dip in plain flour fry in butter, remove from pan add more butter, when butter turns brown add juice of half lemon and pour over fillets. Not quite sole menuir but close
i love whiting when they are above 25-30 cm. when filleted and dipped in batter they can taste pretty sweet. the waste after cleaning the fish can be used to make some good feeding spots in the winter for fishing on pike with deadbait. especially when you are on a big canal or lake or something. just feed 4 days before fishing and 2 days before fishing a little bit as well and then on fishing day the probability of predatory fish being present in the area should be bigger.
The lesser spotted dogfish is my least favourite, followed by juvenile pollack , followed by bloody pouting ! A whiting under a pound and a half is a waste of bait.
Whiting is good to target if you like being busy. Fished that same beach last week of October and had non-stop with some good size and two codling at dusk. I also was fishing straight squid as the witing aren't worth the worms...

Whiting salted then dried like we do in Shetland is delicious also good smoked!
I thought it was the doggy. To be honest, the way beach fishing is in the UK these days, I'm happy to catch anything.
