Something worth noting is for audio desync on Xenia, some have mentioned that changing the max_queued_frames to 8 under [APU] in the config fixed their audio problems, I tested this myself and it happened only once to me after that. Someone else has mentioned that capping your FPS at 60 in your GPU driver also works, haven't tested it myself but with both solutions combined this might solve the issue entirely.

Having played this game on every console (and 100%ed on at least one of them), I can say with confidence that a 60 fps patch for the 3DS version would be the superior way to play the game. I can't remember how I did it back in the day, but you can set up the controls to read the circle pad pro from the new 3DS in Citra. That completely fixed the second analog issue. You can play it with MGS4 style controls, aiming while walking, crouching, and switching camera angles like Gears of War, hell you can play the whole thing in first person mode if you want to. Oh yeah, and the modding community surely will have made new textures by now if that's something you want. But there's still some work to be done before the game is 100% stable. I look forward to that day.
The 3DS version is a fun novelty with much better controls, though the ability to crouchwalk practically breaks the game balance and makes a lot of stealth sections trivial.
@@chemergency I heard similar arguments to the Twin Snakes, but I always respond to them the same way; its an extra feature you can avoid using altogether if you don't want to experience the game with it. Also, I believe the game asked you what's your favorite MGS game and made you choose between 3, 4, and Peace Walker, so my guess is choosing 3 could potentially turn it off anyways, but even if it doesn't, you could always just ignore it.
Last time I tried Citra, it lagged on MGS3 really hard, have aging PC with Haswell gen. Xeon E3-1231, equivalent of i7 4770 and 1060 3Gb, I get choppy frames on it. PS2/3 version being smoother just strains eyes less. Unless it's something I can change in config but whatever I tried, Snake Eater Citra version was slow. SO I'd rather play on console, used PS2 and 3s are dirt cheap, you can get one for like 100-150 bucks. WAY cheaper than hardware for emulating.
The 3DS version has had a host of great patches to make it one of the best versions playable on Citra. There's an HD texture pack, control fix and 60fps hack which makes the game run really amazingly well.
What specs are your PC? I had a pretty low end one when I tried to run it last year, and it ran like crap. Would love to get it working properly because the 3ds version is my favourite due to the aiming, and crouch walking
Holy shit this upload blows my mind, I've been on a marathon and just tinkering with emulators a month ago to find the best MGS3 experience. I enjoy Citra the most cause it feels almost like a remake, bonus points if you have an extra monitor for the second screen. My girlfriend loved Snake Eater the most so far. My ideal setup for each game: 1: The Twin Snakes on Dolphin, widescreen patch, HD texture pack, PS1 music patch 2: PC version with V's fix and Substance of Subsistence mod (adds 3rd person cam) 3: Citra with 60fps patch, HD texture pack (update the game version or patch won't work, also you need to GRAB A SAVE with CIRCLE PAD PRO ENABLED!!! so you can use analog stick properly!) 4: RCPS3 (remember to update the game version too) V: PC, stuff the OSTs of the entire saga in the Walkman folder.
There is a PS1 music patch for Twin Snakes? WOW I didn't even know that. That with HD texture pack should make it awesome to replay. Shall I replay this over the original?
@@rioferdy6678 psndl has almost ALL games on it that were uploaded directly from sony. Look it up online and once you figure it all out enjoy the game. Playing through it for the first time ever and it fucking bangs ! ! !
Citra does have cheats that allow 60 fps on MGS3D, and you can get analog aim if you set up Citra to emulate the circle pad pro. But you also have to download a save file that has the Circle pad pro already enabled, as citra crashes when the game tries to enable it. Played the whole game on Citra, was a pretty good experience, aside from a few crashes during the last cut scenes. The save states in Citra allowed me to just quickly reload if there was a crash. Played it on my steam deck, was fun and I think one of the best ways to play the game. Aside from the shittier graphics, the aiming and crouch walking make up for it.
Are the controls the OG R1 to aim, square button to fire stuff? Cause modern controllers don't have analog face buttons, atleast I don't think, so no decocking the gun once you've held the square button. So if you're gonna pull your gun up, you better be ready to fire. Last time I tried emulating it was on PCSX2 and I don't think there's a good workaround with that. Unless you can map the aim/fire button to the trigger, that way you still have analog control.
@@HeadShoht Nice. It's crazy how FPSs were basically figured out on console already while some TPS were still using archaic controls. I guess it makes sense that Japanese games would still use face buttons to shoot, they basically don't have a gun culture. MS were smart enough, or American enough to realize these controllers have triggers on them and they already contour in the hand kinda like a gun. Why not design games accordingly. But I kinda miss the early days when devs were still figuring this stuff out.

Despite the technical issues and 3DS limitations, MGS3D was my preferred way of playing the game. MGS4 style controls and the touchscreen for changing camouflage suits were a step obove over the original, as long as you use the circle pad pro or the second stick of the New N3DS (the circle pad was more comfortable though). I'd like the remake was based in this version.
There are texture packs and cheat codes that do work on vita. Also that game was compatible with the circle pad pro, so you should be able to use the right pad
I'd recommend Xenia Canary for the optimal performance on X360 emulation. The drawbacks which it really pushes your CPU to the limit for the best experience. If you don't have sufficient cooling or playing on the laptop, you might get overheat easily.
I think that citra would be an awesome option for portable emulation on the new wave of portable PC based devices like the steam deck, as the new lighting system is higher contrast that makes things somewhat more readable on a smaller screen or in poor lighting conditions and the lower res textures are less noticeable on the smaller screen as well, but that all assumes that you can get the emulators running on one of those devices
the 3ds version of mgs3 is really fun to play on the go. seriously until my brother broke my 3ds i would play this all the time outside. highly recommend if you can buy an old 3ds
Regarding Citra Metal Gear Solid 3 D has support for an accessory called the circle pad pro, which mitigates the problem of not having a second analog stick Enabling that option in the game (if there's a way to make it work on Citra) should fix that issue so you don't have to remap any buttons.
Good video but this update has some errors and misconceptions mostly centered around MGS3D. 7:34 Check that they are entered correctly and enable cheats to use the frame rate code. It might be dependant on if it's a US or EU copy. 7:43 You can enable dual analog via the circle pad pro pad in the options, that said Citra has a bug where it can crash if you enable it. 🫤 (One solution is dumping/using a save/copy that already has it enabled) General heads up but make sure MGS3D is patched to 1.1 as well. General trivia that will sound absurd/stupid but MGS3D is believed to run off a fork of MGS4's engine, it's map files can even be loaded into MGS4 and it's animation format is the same too. MGS3D has Peacewalker styled hit markers (that can also be toggled off) and without the circle pad pro it defaults to a control scheme/bindings similar to Peacewalker. In addition to over the shoulder and unlike PW you can still switch to first person, swap shoulders, crawl (you can even crawl sideways) etc. 1:51 Annnd unrelated "fun" fact, water for the Sorrow cutscene and the cutscene where Snake and Eva first reach the WIG are broken in the HDC. The only way to have the effect display correctly in those versions is to swap to letterbox mode (21:9) for some reason. During that cutscene with Ocelot at 1:50 it's also fixed by being cropped zoomed in more during letterbox mode.😮
About the cheats, I did enable it but it didn't work. I tried multiple actually, the only ones that worked were a 30fps one and a 60fps code that made the game run at 3x speed. And about the circle pad pro, I didn't mention it because it crashes, so it's not really usable. Thanks for the info, I didn't know that about MGS4's engine. Must be the same engine for MGS4, MGSPW and MGS3D then. Pretty interesting
@@1Ocelot Since you couldn't get the frame rate code working I feel you could have mentioned the other issues you had/there are with the circle pad pro. MGS3D needs to be updated to 1.1. If I had to bet, MGS3D crashed right before or during the Snake Eater song. It also has a crash after Eva and Snake bang. 😵💫 Were the cheats for the US or EU version? Also once enabled restart to prevent the issue with the speed. Also one work around to use the circle pad pro is to use an existing save with it enabled.
@@GuyOnAChair I tried the codes for myself, at first wasn't working but when I tried using 1.0 specific codes the 30fps code worked but not the 60fps one. Also my audio cuts out after like 5-10 minutes and haven't seen anyone else mention it or found a fix online.

For the RPCS3 button sensitivity issue, if you go into the emulator control settings you can actually map a button that softens your next inputs while holding the key. You can also set it to toggle to make it more of a switch.
I can’t lie I really enjoy the 3DS version on a new Nintendo 3DS and it’s the version I’d want to emulate in the future. Once the emulator and mod communities fix the game to be more pc friendly I love the little gameplay changes and the new textures (I haven’t seen those textures on a high resolution screen so my mind might change when I do) It’s not as fundamentally flawed as it seems because the new 3D there is c-stick support (second analog stick) and it feels like it run at about 30 on that hardware because I remember it being significantly slower on my brothers og 3ds. And I very clearly remember Being able to map c stick in citra last time I used it allowing for 2nd stick support
I've completed this game on PC in 2017 with pcsx2 (and not even the best one, gtx850 i5 4210h, which is outdated mobile videochip/cpu even at the date), and completed it perfectly, in 60fps, with no crashes even! This video gives out an outdated information, but still, if it will make someone who really wanted to play this game actually complete it, it will be great. (Also, as you can understand, you can even run it perfectly on an outdated hardware if you take some time to tune the settings)

Playing MGS HD on xenia canary right now in 10920x1080 with solid 60 fps with no lags at all with 1050Ti. Audio delay can be easly fixed. And to fix texrures transparency glitch you need to use older version of xenia canary (January 29 build, works just fine), because in the newer one you can't do it yet. For transparancy bug you should change gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants to "true" in the config And you can fix audio delay by changing max_queued_frames to "3" (default is 64). Also turn off vsync in config, you can turn in on on your GPU, just use .exe file of the emulator yourself. And using vulkan in much better too.

3DS version is actually my favorite version, at least on the handheld itself. The upgraded graphics were great, the resolution doesn’t bother you on the smaller screen, the 3D effect is fantastic, and even the 20 fps gameplay works well within the 3D. The Peace Walker gameplay is much better, you have better convenience for switching camos on the bottom screen without interrupting gameplay immersion, you have the circle pad pro for 2nd stick aiming and the 3DS XL’s small 2nd stick as well, overall it was just the best version and it felt like a proper remake vs a remaster. The only disappointment I recall from it was the final emotional cutscene being a 2D video file ported from the old game rather than the proper real time 3D assets from the rest of the game, but of course that story always hits hard anyway.
Try to avoid confusing. HD Edition is Japanese disc, which has Snake Eater and Sons of Liberty, except Peace Walker. On the other hand, HD Collection is EU, US etc port, which has all 3 games included.
one of the last games that were made with love and care were a team worked hard to get everything they wanted and worked hard for to be put on the final release disk and not be some dlc that was clearly cut out of the game and shelved for months
I was fortunate enough to hang on to that little system PlayStation put out called Vita. I’ve got Metal Gear 2&3 on it. Still play it to this day. Vita the best handheld ever made in my opinion. Metal Gear looks fabulous on it and plays superbly.

@@KasumiRINA cpu is rlly bad
The 3ds version could be played on a steam deck with citra and the nreal glasses. Would support the 3d effect.
The last graphics comparison was definitely the most important part of the video 😊
Agreed
The 3DS version has had a host of great patches to make it one of the best versions playable on Citra. There's an HD texture pack, control fix and 60fps hack which makes the game run really amazingly well.
What specs are your PC? I had a pretty low end one when I tried to run it last year, and it ran like crap. Would love to get it working properly because the 3ds version is my favourite due to the aiming, and crouch walking
Does the touch screen still needs to appear?
Holy shit this upload blows my mind, I've been on a marathon and just tinkering with emulators a month ago to find the best MGS3 experience. I enjoy Citra the most cause it feels almost like a remake, bonus points if you have an extra monitor for the second screen. My girlfriend loved Snake Eater the most so far.
My ideal setup for each game:
1: The Twin Snakes on Dolphin, widescreen patch, HD texture pack, PS1 music patch
2: PC version with V's fix and Substance of Subsistence mod (adds 3rd person cam)
3: Citra with 60fps patch, HD texture pack (update the game version or patch won't work, also you need to GRAB A SAVE with CIRCLE PAD PRO ENABLED!!! so you can use analog stick properly!)
4: RCPS3 (remember to update the game version too)
V: PC, stuff the OSTs of the entire saga in the Walkman folder.
There is a PS1 music patch for Twin Snakes? WOW I didn't even know that. That with HD texture pack should make it awesome to replay. Shall I replay this over the original?
Very useful video, congrats. It'll be great a new version with the pachinko graphics.

Legit no one asked you or cares.
Aside from the shittier graphics, the aiming and crouch walking make up for it.
there's an AI upscaled texture pack that greatly improves the graphics, I think it's better than the HD version
:)
@@nickv1212 The 3ds controls use the shoulder buttons and u can aim without firing
Peacewalker plays perfectly for me I just downloaded and set rpcs3 the other day for guns of the patriots and figured I'd give PW a shot and it plays beautifully, gonna get a rom for snake eater as well but I replayed it pretty recently
Great to hear, thanks! What's your CPU if you don't mind me asking?
Whoa I was just thinking about this the other day thinking to myself "Hmm what was that video I watched that showed the best way to play MGS3 on PC" and here you are with another video on it haha!
I don't have a PS3 controller and I don't have a GPU so I'm gonna stick with the PS2 version. Especially since the file size is WAY smaller to keep the game around compared to the HD remaster.
you should consider making this a series for other classic games, I think it'd be pretty well received.
I finish this game for more than 10 times in the ps2 console. Very sure 100% the game unless I miss something. Truly a masterpiece of a game
I've been playing all the PS exclusive on my SteamDeck. Absolutely glorious.
well, I'm happy to be the first to say in this comments, that konami is finally going to release a port of mgs3, besides a remake :D (I'm crying).
Been rocking the Rpcs3 emulator with a 13900k and 4090 and it makes those older games look soooo good with the scaling. Emulation has come a long way.
Played the HD Collection on the Steam Deck recently (RPCS3), runs fine apart from slowdown when things get hectic, as well as the final Boss fight.
its funny how 2 months after this video knami unveils the remake
Just completed the game about 20 minutes ago PS2 emulator. Loved it aside from the camera which seriously hindered my enjoyment of the game at some points. No crashes, only audio bugs was during the bigger actions scenes containing the Shagohad and escape scene after the last fight. Other than that. No issues
Did you play the original release or the subsistence rerelese?
I had no issues at all. Subsistence version.
In fact I recorded the game in 4K for two hours, video will be shortly on my channel (check in 8 hours, it's processing forever lol)
@@GutsOfRivia Original
@@fourtruths3324 You should've played the Subsistence version, it adds a camera that is behind Snake and you can control it.
@@fourtruths3324 Get the Substance version, not only does it have a much more refined camera system, it also has three separate discs, with Disc 1 containing the game and it's entirety, Disc 2 having alot of bonus content and MGO, and Finally, Disc 3 having behind the scenes videos and early marketing for MGS4
TL;DR: substance is alot better then the original, with added bonus content into the game, A much better implemented 3rd person camera system, while having most bugs present in the original version from emulation fixed in this version on PCSX2.
The broken rain effect present in both Xenia and RPCS3 is not a result of an emulation error but the HD Port itself, I Compared the two on real hardware using the PS2 and PS3 to confirm.
I used to play a demo of this game on my ps2 when I was 8 😂 I still feeling the same thing that I felt when I watched this introduction, I played that demo a lot of times and never knew what happens after a certain part of the beginning of the game, but I remember that the game was really good

I'd like the remake was based in this version.
having a CFW'd New 3DS is such a boon for Nintendo and retro emulation. It's how I played mgs3 as well and it was quite enjoyable.
Man, this video is gold, I just started MGS saga and this helps a lot
the 3ds version of mgs3 is really fun to play on the go. seriously until my brother broke my 3ds i would play this all the time outside. highly recommend if you can buy an old 3ds

This makes me glad I have all the OG stuff. I like messing with some stuff but mgs just feels good on the og hardware
Regarding Citra
Metal Gear Solid 3 D has support for an accessory called the circle pad pro, which mitigates the problem of not having a second analog stick
Enabling that option in the game (if there's a way to make it work on Citra) should fix that issue so you don't have to remap any buttons.
Still gets me everytime once I realized Pearl from spongebob was the same voice actress for The Boss.
(One solution is dumping/using a save/copy that already has it enabled)
General heads up but make sure MGS3D is patched to 1.1 as well.
Have you got a source for this being MGS4s engine? That's incredible if it's true
Were the cheats for the US or EU version? Also once enabled restart to prevent the issue with the speed. Also one work around to use the circle pad pro is to use an existing save with it enabled.

Once the emulator and mod communities fix the game to be more pc friendly
I love the little gameplay changes and the new textures (I haven’t seen those textures on a high resolution screen so my mind might change when I do)
It’s not as fundamentally flawed as it seems because the new 3D there is c-stick support (second analog stick) and it feels like it run at about 30 on that hardware because I remember it being significantly slower on my brothers og 3ds.
Very cool video. Keep them coming!

For transparancy bug you should change gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants to "true" in the config
And you can fix audio delay by changing max_queued_frames to "3" (default is 64).

I'm patiently waiting for when the 3ds version will be improved to the point of perfection so I can play it on emulator
