Hi everyone. I’ve had a lot of negative feedback about the music on my Barra landing, just wanted to explain why. I’m fairly new to making videos and also I don’t have the best equipment, so when it comes to editing, I need to strike a balance to create a piece of work I am happy with. I will however be returning to Barra this year and will try to make a better job of it next time. In the meantime I’ll try to track down the landing footage I have and upload the landing segment without music (now uploaded !!) It might not be the best though. Sorry for disappointing you all in a place that deserves better. Please stick with me as I learn and evolve my channel! Thanks for the support.
Jim Baird You stay safe too! I’m currently uploading the unedited landing minus music for those who prefer - scraping around for ANYthing to put up just now! Hope things pass soon and you get to Barra! Cheers
I've only just seen this video today, didn't realise you'd been to Barra. I'm on my way there today for a couple of hours.......and as for any negative comments, they're not deserved, this was a great video
I flew Twin Otters Off strip in Canada's arctic and now I fly into Glasgow from Canada with the airliners. This video brought both my worlds together, VERY cool to see! I've seen that twin otter many times on my arrivals to GLA and I always wondered what routes it did, now I know! Great video
I always like the music on your videos. I’m quite new to your channel and addicted to it. It cheers me so much. For me it’s the best thing on UA-cam. You and the darlin wee lass.
We did this flight in May a couple of years ago - in perfect weather. Stunning views the whole way and fabulous landing experience. The return was just as good, and such a thrill as the Twin Otter seemed to leap from the beach in a couple of hundred yards and rise like an elevator. Thanks Steve for capturing the feel of this trip. Much easier finding the B&B in daylight!
It's a lovely island. I've been there many times. Great people, lovely beaches and the cleanest little airport on the planet with its three runways washed twice a day by the tide, and of course you gotta fly there on the Twotter... of course!
Hey Steve, I did the same about 12 months ahead of you and indeed it's a stunning flight worthy of everyone's 'Must-do' list. I really enjoy how you put your vlog together too, and you have more courage than I do when filming - I generally bottle out of capturing folk! Awesome stuff. Subbed!
Andrew Ditton nice one, thanks so much for the support! I’m still feeling my way with filming, need to find a lot more bravery! Glad you got to experience that incredible flight too!!!
I cycled the Outer Hebrides a few years ago, loved the white sandy beaches , turquoise water, blue sky. It was like a Caribbean island but a lot colder. Watching the planes land on the beach was amazing.
@@steve-marsh . The day before arriving on Barra we were stranded on Eriskay The Politician pub ( Whiskey Galore fame) made us very welcome , keeping us sheltered from the heavy rain and hurricane winds. We stayed all day in the pub . We drank ourselves sober waiting for the ferry to recommence the service to Barra.. Fond memories
Wow! I hope one day it will be my turn to take this trip. Those small waiting rooms around the smaller routes are so cosy and the landscapes so dramatic... Great, great job, Steve. Congratulations!
I envy you the flight and landing on a beach, I came to Barra by ferry from Oban. It was long and annoying crossing as they were doing a seasonal cleaning of the Clansman. I enjoy Barra trip on my bike. Waiting for the 2pm flight in dunnes.Riding around whole island and visiting Vatersay beaches as well. Next time you are there, do not forget Vatersay- men's island. Thank you for your lovely video. Next time I am flying....
I've written that in my travel book for next time, thanks! Ah the flight was awesome, but being able to catch the ferry with your bike and gas canisters for the camping stove is probably the best option in the long run :)
Great video Steve and what a cool 1st Officer...... I bet he wakes up in the morning thinking "another great day in the office awaits" some people say they have the best job in the world but his has to be up there.
John Avery I know right!? I’m not even sure I’d want to go on to fly the big jets, I’d be happy with this real flying in the twin otter :) thanks so much for your support of a channel going through some grounded times at the moment! Take care
What a charming video. I watch dozens of flight videos, and I don't think I've ever described one as "charming" before. I guess it's because I watch so many that UA-cam suggested yours; I've never encountered your channel before, or heard of this flight (or of Barra, for that matter). I liked your narration: very informative and naturally good-humored, without straining to be funny. All in all, a very nice job--I'll watch your other videos soon. (P.S.: the music was fine).
James Clendon thanks so much for the kind comments and of course for watching! :) I’m still fairly new to this and feeling my way a bit, but feedback like that gives me the confidence I’m on the right track, thanks so much! 👍🏼
I’m definitely going to copy this trip when we can travel again. Very exotic when seen from the other side of Europe. EXCELLENT trip reports. Thank you. I wish I had discovered them earlier.

While I have never been to Barra, my first flight to the Western Isles was in a BEA Viscount in 1963, Renfrew-Benbecula-Stornoway. The last leg involved a small diversion at the request of the RNLI to locate a small boat in distress off the west coast of Harris and was at a far lower flight level than standard, which made for stunning views of Harris. We located the boat and the man was later rescued.
Barra is beautiful!! And yes, the Twin Otter is an excellent S.T.O.L. (short take off and landing) airplane and so does get off the ground very quickly as that is what it's designed to do. Many thanks Steve for sharing your part of the world with us, i do love your adventures. Greetings from sunny Jamaica.
I've flown from Benbecula to Barra and back - many years ago. I hired a car in Barra - the most expensive hire of a rust bucket per mile of road to drive on. When it came time to return, the flight almost didn't leave because the "airport" couldn't get the fire engine started! Anyway, landing on the beach is quite an experience - and I love the Twin Otter. I had a few days on Barra. I once flew from Edinburgh to Tingwall airfield in Shetland, sharing the Twin Otter with Jo Grimmond MP.
Flew into Barra from Benbecula many years ago. I wonderful island and a fantastic flight. I rented a rusty Ford Escort, which must have been the most expensive rental per mile of road available to drive on!
Fabulous video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Scotland and the islands are just the best! Bit scary when it got dark and he had no clue where accommodation was. Well done Steve.
Very good video! I live in the states (Kansas to be exact) and my mother's people on her father's side are from Barra (Clan MacNeil; Americanized to McNeil). Cheers!
Bill Thompson thanks so much Bill! Glad you liked it, especially as an island which is part of your family! I love the Midwest 🇺🇸 hope you are well, stay safe!
Stumbled across this video Steve. Barra has been on my bucket list for a while now! maybe this year after this whole covid malarkey dies down! Great video and thanks for sharing!
Richard Neary hey thanks for watching!!! Hope you make it there this year, I might be on the plane with you! I’ve got another flight on hold with Loganair - all the best
You did well to get a bit of bonus flying whilst the tide went out! Did the day trip to Barra three years ago. Memorable. Also did the Tiree day trip with bicycle hire in 2018. That was memorable too.
SteveMarsh Weather can be an issue of course but when we were there it was calm. The island is pretty flat too so it was easy cycling. The trickiest thing to negotiate was the single track roads whenever a camper van or a tractor was coming in the other direction. It was a great day out.
Very nice video. This is the first time I have seen a plane land on the beach except for an emergency. A very unique airport indeed. I guess you have to go to Scotland to enjoy this experience! Hope your return trip was as good as the arrival.
How amazing Steve, absolutely stunning...was kinda scared for you in the dark thought it was gunna turn into a horror movie ha ha...definitely one for the bucket list....
Dean Nicholson haha I should have put some horror sound effects on that bit! Thanks so much for your feedback! I really hope you can experience it sometime, the flight and the island are both stunning :)
Just catching up with some of your earlier stuff Steve. Love videos like this one. Another trip to add to my ever lengthening wishlist! Cheers marra (as us ex-pitmen say down here in Sunderland) 👍
Love it :) and thanks so much for the support of the channel! This flight is an absolute pleasure from start to finish - if you do it as a day trip, try to get the flights that give the longest time on the island, it's well worth it. And off-season they do really good value day trips :)
I have some old Aeroplane Monthly magazines here. There was a story about the merry old De Havilland Dragonfly, a twin engined biplane airliner, in one. Back then, regular airline flights would take off from any meadow long enough and take you straight to the biggest cities. You could get flights like from farmer Miller's meadow in Wales straight to Paris in the Twenties and Thirties. De Havilland Twin Otters thus kind of hold up their grand old heritage, flying from the beach. I love it!
Hi Steve, and Grace! I can’t find any objection to your music but as a fan of Blair Douglas perhaps my bias is showing! What a place Barra is! One thing about highland areas is when it goes dark it is very sudden, as a towny I like my street lamps which are missing from most places and I have been caught many times wandering in near total blackness! Anyway, thanks for uploading - looking forward to the next but spending time enjoying previous uploads!
my comment wasnt a sarcastic one !! I do love the music- id say its perfect man - you done a great job and ive recently taken to watching alot of your videos! keep up the good work, its given me alot of ideas of places i want to visit.
Kudos to the pilot of these smaller planes. Enjoying your video, have subbed and binge watching back videos. Felt a bit sorry for you in that bothy and the bad weather. Tfs
Fantastic little video, thanks. I did this with a mate a couple of years ago, we made it a round trip and came back on the CalMac ferry via Oban which also gives wonderful views. There's a super Indian/Italian restaurant on the island, too.
Coffees cakes and trains cool, I wish I’d had time to do the ferry back :) I’ll need to visit that restaurant next time :) thanks very much for watching 👍🏼
Totally absorbing. with an amusing nocturnal ending. Just the thing for self isolationists. I will look out for similar trips by you starting with the sea plane (?) to Campeltown
Tom Carr whaaaaaat! Can you really get to Campbeltown by seaplane? Oh I need to start saving up for that one! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment 😊👍🏼
That was fun! As a fellow canuck to another viewer couldn't help noticing the Chevy / Rock cap! I assume you've been there. If not add it to your list as there are several aviation firsts. One key one overlooked by many travellers is Botwood! Which is definitely worth the detour for aviation nerds!
Y Kaplun Yeah, love it there - did the full East Coast Trail a couple of years back in 9 days from Portugal Cove to Cappahayden - what an amazing experience that was! Also spent some nice time in St John’s after recovering! The cap was from a Value Village there 🤣 didn’t get the chance to get to Gander and didn’t even know about Botwood - just more reason to go back! (Would love to!) thanks for watching my video! 👍🏼
All good ..your editing is good..people are being far to critical..actually I’ve seen vlogs/videos on BARRA B4 and I think yours was the best...Grace stole the show !!..good job!!
Enjoyed this very much. It's a bit of a spectator sport for visitors to Bara, watching the planes landing on the beach. I know as I joined in during a trip to the outer hebrides a while back. Quite a sight 😀
Fab video and now on my bucket list! What a gorgeous & exciting airport! Your island visits make me sigh, wish I could go live on a Scottish island, better quality of life. Oh well, must make sure I do my bucket list, all the islands are on it!
I thoroughly enjoyed your video ! A friend and I had arranged a similar flight some years ago when FlyBe were operating the route. On the day we had booked, the flight was severely delayed due to much water on the landing strip ! Having seen your video, I must make arrangements to try the flight again !

Timothy Neville if only there was UA-cam then, would have loved to have seen that flight!!!
Thanks for that info Lawrence! I love aviation but have a lot still to learn :)
I’m so jealous of your adventures!!!! I believe the Benbecula one doesn’t run anymore? And how did you find a flight into Tingwall! Super-impressed!
Flew into Barra from Benbecula many years ago. I wonderful island and a fantastic flight. I rented a rusty Ford Escort, which must have been the most expensive rental per mile of road available to drive on!
Barney Leith haha that’s funny 🤣 Shane they cancelled that route! Would love to have tried it! Cheers for watching :)
Another great video, thanks Steve.
Thanks so much!
Fabulous video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Scotland and the islands are just the best! Bit scary when it got dark and he had no clue where accommodation was. Well done Steve.
It really was scary! I was getting nervous :D
Thanks for the report. Glad you found your accommodation and didn’t have to sleep in a field!
Emily Lawty hehe I’m so stupid 🤣 Thanks for the comment :)
Tour of Barra by night was included?
I’ve got another flight on hold with Loganair - all the best
what a lovely and original airport ...:) good video :)...the only airport that the pilots must know the tide time lol
It’s crazy eh! Thanks so much for watching!
You did well to get a bit of bonus flying whilst the tide went out! Did the day trip to Barra three years ago. Memorable. Also did the Tiree day trip with bicycle hire in 2018. That was memorable too.
egpx ohhh good tip on the Tiree trip! Although I’ve heard it gets pretty windy there? Was it ok for the cycling? Cheers for watching 👍🏼
SteveMarsh Weather can be an issue of course but when we were there it was calm. The island is pretty flat too so it was easy cycling. The trickiest thing to negotiate was the single track roads whenever a camper van or a tractor was coming in the other direction. It was a great day out.
egpx sounds like bliss to me!
Very nice video. This is the first time I have seen a plane land on the beach except for an emergency. A very unique airport indeed. I guess you have to go to Scotland to enjoy this experience! Hope your return trip was as good as the arrival.
Thank you very much James! I could do this trip over and over again, never gets old! :)
@@steve-marsh thanks Steve. Very much noted.
I love it!
That sounds incredible! :)
Felt like I was there myself! Nice video and nice songs to accompany it.
N K thanks very much for the support 👍🏼
I love your flight videos with the small aircraft!
Cheers! More to come soon I hope :)
Great going, even the music is fitting…two thumbs up!
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for the lovely message, nice to see I’m not the only one missing street lamps! :)
Great video, which captures the atmosphere of this unique flight. Tempting!
Colin Renfrew thanks so much! Even in pretty foul weather it was amazing! Do it :)
I've been to Barra when I was on a Western Isles photography trip. I think Barra is fun and quite querky!
Cool - would love to do a photography trip!
my comment wasnt a sarcastic one !! I do love the music- id say its perfect man - you done a great job and ive recently taken to watching alot of your videos! keep up the good work, its given me alot of ideas of places i want to visit.
Much appreciated Chris! And thanks for trawling through all my videos :)
Very interesting & enjoyable, thanks. A flight I'd love to take.
Andy Clark thanks for watching Andy!
All good ..your editing is good..people are being far to critical..actually I’ve seen vlogs/videos on BARRA B4 and I think yours was the best...Grace stole the show !!..good job!!
Thanks so much, it’s really nice to hear some positive feedback, yes! grace was awesome!
nice trip report! Flying on an unique aircraft to an unique airport is cool, I shall try this route soon, maybe after the pandemic
Trip Report ohhh you must, it’s really cool! Open cockpit is cool too - and it’s possible to do a day trip on this route!
My grandmother tells me her family, the McNeils, came from castle Kisimul on Barra.
Same we are now spelled mcneill but has the same history
Enjoyed this very much. It's a bit of a spectator sport for visitors to Bara, watching the planes landing on the beach. I know as I joined in during a trip to the outer hebrides a while back. Quite a sight 😀
Thanks Jane!
Really enjoyed your video, including the music. Your video is excellent. Keep it up.
Ben O Neill thanks so much for watching and for the support! Really appreciated! 👍🏼
Another great video and this one is still on the bucket list! 😂
Cheers!
l always wanted to fly a twin otter, It can take you from a major international airport into a place like Barra. What a great airplane.
Mark Walker couldn’t agree more - proper flying as well, watching the flight deck was also a treat! Thanks for watching!
Oh please do!!! I’ve had a cancellation on this route before due to weather, but it was well worth waiting for!
Great vid mate keep at it I thought the music was great. I’ve been on that same flight the only commercial flight to land on a beach the terminal is a former school apparently
Oh wow, had no idea it was a school, cheers for the info! And thanks for watching!
Only discovered your channel this morning.....very good. Watched the Lerwick Ferry crossing and this video. Will subscribe and watch the others later when my chores are done
Brian McCann amazing! Thanks so much for your support - another video going out this evening as well :)
@@steve-marsh you're welcome Steve, I like the production, you have struck a nice balance between the content and the music and visual effects. Some videos have too much funky music and visual effects.
Have always wanted to visit barra after watching your lovely video .will defo on my "bucket list" as they say.thanks again.look forward to next video.👍🍺
It so deserves to be on the list :) even if just for the day trip!
Twin Otters are everywhere - took one exploring the islands of Indonesia!
d ss tanks of the skies :) small planes but I always feel safe in them. Must have been cool hopping about Indonesia! Cheers
They fly from Newquay airport to the Isles Of Scilly.
Jonathan J. Very much on the list now :)
The music was nice. I just wanted to say don’t worry about fast forwarding the taxiing part of your flight. Real-time is good too
karakafat thanks very much for watching and for the feedback. Really appreciated and I’ll build that advice into future videos :)
I love all your airplanes and airports and train videos.
Thanks again for watching these!
We say the same thing in Newfoundland. We can have all 4 seasons on one day at times. We just came out of 2 weeks + of rain, drizzle & fog.
Oh I’ve seen both sides of your beautiful island :) 5 days of glorious weather in St. John’s followed by crazy rain doing the ECT thru hike - wouldn’t change a thing though it was wonderful!
@@steve-marsh our little island is a great place to live, weather aside.
Thank you, I didn't know places like that existed. The landing on the beach was something else. Colin D
Cheers Colin! Would like to do an updated video of this sometime :)
When we were in Barra we visited the airport and hoped to see a plane land and take off. Sadly there were no flights that day. More reason to return. Thank you Steve for a lovely video. 👏👏👍😎
Loved that !
A really fun flight, thanks for watching!
love the Newfoundland flag on your cap!
Mark R haha well spotted! Did the full East Coast Trail a couple of years back - what a beautiful hike that was! 🇨🇦
Hi there SteveMarsh, superb and informative video. I flew on the Seaplane version of one of these Twin Otters in the Maldives ...... interior identical, but the NOISE from this engines was to much, so, on our return I wore ear plugs ...... ahhhhhh MUCH better.
Ps. I've now very happily subscribed ;-) ;-)
A bit more exotic than my flight :) cheers!
And thanks so much for the support!!!
@@steve-marsh you my friend are very very welcome ...... please keep up the most excellent work ;-)
