Detroit Schools Are In The Midst Of A Water Crisis (HBO)

  • It's the first week of school for public school students in Detroit, but these schools are in the midst of a water crisis.
    Detroit Public Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti decided to shut down drinking fountains at every one of its 106 schools after initial tests of Detroit's drinking water showed high concentrations of copper and lead.
    “I am turning off all drinking water in our schools until a deeper and broader analysis can be conducted to determine the long-term solutions for all schools,” said Vitti in a statement to school Detroit Public Schools Community District staff last week.
    The decision affects close to 50,000 students across Michigan's largest school district, who started the school year Tuesday drinking from water bottles and coolers, not fountains. DPS will spend about $200,000 in the next few months providing bottled water at its schools while district officials work toward a long-term solution.
    "It’s not just school, its’ everybody in the city being affected," said Dana Dacres, PTA president at Burton International Academy in Detroit.
    One walk through the halls and it's easy to spot the black and white signs that read "CAUTION: DO NOT DRINK THE WATER" taped above every fountain.
    “It’s now ingrained in our culture,” added Dacres, who’s five children all attend Burton, pointing to a letter thousands of other parents received from DPS informing them about the crisis. “This is not the first time Burton has been without water.”
    This is actually the third time that the water has been shut down at her children's school. The first time, a burst water main caused a months-long shutdown. The second time, testing by the school district revealed elevated levels of copper.
    DPS has initiated further testing at every one of its schools.
    “We can’t see any more of those letters explaining yet again the faucets will be turned off,” Dacres said. “We know this, thank you, now let's get into business of fixing it permanently.”

    I'm a Michigan native, grew up in Flint actually. And it's always perplexed me that we have the largest source of freshwater in the world yet cities like mine and Detroit can't even drink the water from our taps

      And yet corporations like Nestle are sucking it out and selling it back to you and barely paying anything for the water.

      It's old pipes. You can have the modt crystal clear, perfect water in the world-- but if the pipes are old and leaking chemicals... you get Flint. The state and cities have put off fixing basic stuff like this for a long time.

    • @starcherry6814
      @starcherry6814 5 років тому +5

      No it was the government's inability to properly filter and treat the water, the pipes were not the source of problem until they were corroded by the un-properly filtered water.

    • @starcherry6814
      @starcherry6814 5 років тому +5

      Btw I worked for the Flint development centre and 80% of the homes in Flint now have filters on their faucets, filter up to 99% of the lead in the tap water, thanks to the programs provided people are now regularly offered free filters and refills.

    • @pepps779
      @pepps779 5 років тому +3

      +Star Cherry It still seems to come down to poor local management of needed infrastructure, regardless of whether one blames the pipes or filter/treatment.

      How are the two related exactly? Does not water infrastructure spending come of local budgets, like city/county/state, where the so called Space Force would be funded by the federal budget?

    I actually work in Detroit public schools and I can say this is a big problem that needs resolving. The water coolers are a hassle for kids as water gets on the floors and it takes a while to let every kid get a drink. Teachers are also reluctant to let kids drink because of the hassle. I have seen multiple times, just in the 3 days that school has been open, of a kid asking to get a drink and the teacher says no because "if I let you get a drink I have to let everyone get a drink" (me personally I think its ridiculous to not let kids drink water but this wouldnt happen if we had fountains)

    This is not a competition about who has the worst conditions, rather a wake up call about the injustices that these kids are being forced to deal with. How can people be okay with kids having to wash their hands with bottled water? How can people be okay with the cooks having to boil water or use bottled water to make food. No one in their possible right mind would be okay sending their children to a school like this with these hazardous conditions. This is not a black or white thing, this is a RIGHT and WRONG thing. The livelihood of these children depends on it! It is time to stand up and put all of the bickering aside and start to create chance!

      Brando Not really, Neither party cares. That’s why you have places like this. Both sides won’t change anything.
      It’s like Trump vs Hillary
      It didn’t matter because nothing will happen in those 4-8 years. They won’t do anything life changing. No one is actually expecting something different now days. No one in Detroit is expecting to have there situation solved by one of the party’s. Both party’s are corrupt.
      All you do is vote for the person who gives you the lies you want to hear.
      I would love if those politicians would decided on a plan and get Detroit’s shit together but that won’t happen. Detroit hasn’t been in good condition for a while and I’m guessing it won’t be and any better condition in the future.
      But you can hope

    Everyone is saying the same thing - give up meat and dairy and you'll be
    part of the solution rather than part of the problem. A meat based
    diet uses at least 20 times more water than a plant based diet. Most
    people know this but are too stubborn, selfish and egotistical to
    change. People hate feeling they're being dictated too, even tho
    they're not. It's simply common sense. People say they want a future
    for their children but fail to put their money where there mouth is.
    It's very simple. Go vegan, live at least 10 years longer and you'll be
    in less trouble with the Gods when you die too. Do it!

    This will be the majority of America soon, what with the coming automation of most jobs. This is what happens when you allow private business interests to run things.

    Detroit problems go back to 1980s when Roger Moore moved GM production to Mexico. Watch the film "Roger & Me".

    The solution is obvious and simple. They need to pass a capital improvement mil levy, just like my children's Michigan School District did. They should be able to fix the major problems with that money. As for the mice the fix is cheap and easy - a jar of peanut butter and a bunch of traps.
