      Education has gone to shit because schools are lowering standards for the kids whose parents aren't raising them. Detroit students get more funding than the national average, but still perform among the worst in the nation.

      Critical Thinking it isn't the problem, supposed billions go into schools in Detroit but it isn't showing results. The answer isn't more money, and it isn't an answer in the first place. It is a question. Where is the money Going? Everything in that school is dirt cheap and could run on a couple million as it is. Billions? Where is the money going?

    • @adivasantharao66
      @adivasantharao66 5 років тому +1

      chieftp That's exactly why we need to improve the school system. The fact that you can draw connections from 50-60 years ago to today in terms of infrastructure and the educational system really sucks, frankly, because that means that we've made very little progress since then. I am sure your grandparents are great people who turned out great and were very successful in life, but times have changed since then and demand is increasing for highly-skilled workers with bachelor's degrees at the minimum. The only way the US can meet those demands is by improving the foundation of education: elementary and middle schools. The only way kids can focus and learn properly is by going to an environment which is structurally sound and has relatively new technology so that they can learn efficiently. The fact that billions of dollars are going into the education system but this school can't even get 10 or 20 computers (total cost maybe $4000) which would last them years while our military gets all the latest guns really shows how screwed up we are not just as a nation, but also as a society in general.

    • @chieftp
      @chieftp 5 років тому +1

      that's why successful people send their kids to private schools. we need to get the government OUT of the education business altogether.

      +chris yates I am aware yes. But are you aware that a Republican governor is currently in office right? And that he is the one that cut the corners to save a couple million that caused this. ……right?

    • @alejandroespinosa1767
      @alejandroespinosa1767 8 років тому +1

      +chris yates it is the governor that decides how much money is spent for public education. And Rick Snyder, a Republican, is currently the governor. So yes, this typically a democratic state, is under Republican rule.

    • @alejandroespinosa1767
      @alejandroespinosa1767 8 років тому

      +chris yates Califon has a different kind of system where we can bypass congress when they dont get shit done.. the Initiative system. Its very imperfect however, and moneyed interests are able to take advantage of signature collections since they are able to recruit and pay people to collect them. But that's California! Btw, idk if your old enough, but yes, Calif is very liberal, yet in the 90's, under Pete Wilson, the anti immigrant bill, 187 was voted in...... my point being is that although it is liberal, it is conservatives who are the most likely to vote, while minorities and the poorer ad the least..... which makes up a huge part of Detroit. It is the state government, not the city government that decides how money is spent for public schools. There Is a Republican governor, who could care less about poor blacks..... "pick yourself up by your boot straps" is a Republican saying. And I'm, not putting democrats holding seats in the state legislature beyond apathy, or corruption, but it has a MOST to do with Rick Snyder, the slime ball who allowed for the Flint water crisis and knew about it for years.

    • @alejandroespinosa1767
      @alejandroespinosa1767 8 років тому

      +chris yates another point. Did u know that Flint's mayor is Democrat? Yet it's Republican Rick Snyder, again, who fucked up their water. To save a few million to give it to his corporate buddies, he cut regulations allowing for this crisis. Then he turns around and asked the Federal government for money to fix it. Vote Republican all u want, but know that what they love to do is use YOUR tax dollars to give to the wealthy. Money that you worked hard for, then when you complain and say "hey, if I'm paying all these taxes, maybe I should get something in return!" And they yell "entitlement!! Don't ask what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country!" All while they fucking rob you!

    In the Philippines where we can't rely on our own government to provide our public schools with it's own chairs, desks or funds for maintenance and repair, the community itself tries to solve these problems. In what we like to call the "School Brigade", the parents of the children get involved. They go to the school regularly to clean and help in whatever way they can, the classrooms or the halls of the school, etc, yet majority of our schools still look terrible compared to the schools featured here.

    "No monetary incentive. No." "The only incentive would be the children."
    Teaching is a profession like any other in the sense that no matter how much you love what you do, there is a breaking point where you have to say this is not enough to make me keep doing this and you move on.
    If you want to bring in talented teachers, develop them, and retain them, there is only so much you can get from ONLY the children.

    It's simple Math. Almost half the money to fund Public Schools comes from Local property taxes . The rest comes from State and Federal Money. Jobs left Detroit ages ago. The remaining population does not make enough money to support their community. This city needs to focus on a few schools and close the rest. Math doesn't lie and doesn't care about politics, color, or Religion.

Honestly if you didn’t go to the 3 big middle schools or the top high schools you can forget having decent teachers and a decent school experience and it’s not all good even at the top. It comes from many factors such as parents not raising their children to want to do anything in school and having people in charge who don’t know what they are doing. I’m a Junior in dps as of right now and I’ve had to deal with this stuff for years 🤷‍♀️

    Agree or not I don’t care
    But I don’t see how this is environmental or educational racism I just don’t. The people chose to live in a place that is having these problems but they have a choice to move out if they work for the money and move to a better environment. Same for the educational stuff I can see why people are saying educational racism but at the end of the day it’s not the schools fault it’s the people who are running the school and the people who are in charge of that. Find people who care to take care of these things and we won’t have problems.

    The video is very sad. it is extremely tragic this elementary school is in such terrible conditions.
    This is whats crazy a f to me. I was watching the recent detroit presidential debates. A bunch of stuffed suits arguing like stooges over bad policy. I thought to myself, here are a bunch of millionaires, in the middle of detroit, trying to win over the public cooperation. They are enclosed, and pretty much disconnected from the general atmosphere, and it shows, especially when they talk of what issues are. I thought to myself, if one of these fools wanted to be elected, and be identified with Team USA, why are none of them outside, walking the streets, talking to people, and discussing the current conditions of things(and how to solve the ills of the general citizenry)? when they discuss the budget, but don't discuss poverty.
    Instead we have these aristocrats, on a stage, surrounded by sycophants - totally separate from the people, places, things, and issues in which they claim to be addressing and representing. The event is reported by all mainstream news outlets. nobody mentioned that while Aristocrats were putting on a circus inside there was crumbling impoverishment outside. a bunch of security guards, agents and teams in between them too.

      That's a straw man argument. Capitalism values the people's right to become what they want and be rewarded accordingly, it isn't perfect, and that's why we have a regulated form of capitalism in the US. Socialism is just the redistribution of wealth (the same thing the US does except on a greater scale), but it makes it so there is less of a economic drive to create businesses, make inventions, etc.

      Sure, going back to the roots of US society would certainly fix it.
      It's the destruction of the USA's once strong social systems that's the problem, as we see from this very clip.
      The cash in the offshore bank accounts of sociopathic capitalists should be in the pockets, local economies and even schools of regular people; rather than concentrated within the private sector.
      You simply haven't got any credible sources, nor information and simply regurgitate capitalist (fascist) rantings, so you're screwed.
      Objectivity, rationality and credible sources - find them.

      You simply don't have any credible notions on socialism and just keep ranting about something you clearly have no idea about.
      The USA is a socialist society, just like the Swiss and even the UK.
      Democracy is inherently socialist and revolves on EQUITY and EQUALITY, you-capitalist-propaganda-swallowing-stooge.
      You need to look up American Enlightenment for the basic foundation you're so clearly missing:
