Hello, I always enjoy your videos, but this is my first time commenting. I own a p38 in Japan and have almost completed all repairs except for the HEVAC. p38 repair was an ordeal at first and a battle as I found new faults after repair after repair, but somehow p38 repair became a pleasure for me! I look forward to your p38 repair journey! I will be cheering for you from Japan.
This is an excellent channel Sam. I myself am a RR L322 enthusiast and am on my third now, but this video is inspiring me to buy a P38 and see what I can do with it whether that be full restoration or enhance it. Keep growing the channel I'll be watching
Congrats on your first sponsor! This is huge news for you and your channel. You deserve it! Btw this videos will be helpful once I get some old LR to play with.
I just bought back my old 1997 DSE , third time is the charm! 340,000kms on the clock and still on air springs, remarkably it’s in better shape than my 2010SC5.0 I’m glued to this series of videos keep up the good work, I’m going to dig into a leaking rear axle seal soon. BTW I don’t think many DSE p38 made it to Canada, mine is an import from Belgium
Anything air suspension you need Sam , Miessler in Germany has it. I just got a new compressor for mine with a 2 year warranty from them. From ordering it until it reached my door ( Leinster) was 28 hours. Unbelievable service. They even sent the relay ( free ) that is supposed to be changed when a new compressor goes in.
@@SamsMotors I’ve tried the rebuild. It’s very fiddly. Problem is that when most compressors give up the ghost , they are a complete mess on the inside. I’ve got 5 here in a box none of which are suitable to even try rebuild. And I bought them all brand new from the UK. Of course now with Brexit we are getting ridden by revenue bringing stuff from the UK. Meissler are on eBay. Huge amount of customers and positive reviews. They answer emails promptly too. And not crazy expensive for the kind of service you get.
Tip for you Sam, I had one of these trucks and loved it, shame they were never the 3.0l with more horses!!! Looking back even the TD 5 was a better unit ( I have TD5 D2 200 bhp now) The head on mine went due to the fan seizing up, rebuilt new head and all good. The engine was a cow to bleed coolant so I devised a little method. On the drivers side of the engine you'll see the 2 pipes going to the matrix, take the pipe nearest the block and cobble up a bleed valve using some 22mm copper pipe and fittings with a 15mm end feed air valve, it's at the top of the cooling system and you can get all the air out. Hope this helps, love the videos.
Cheers! Yeah I reckon this has an airlock in it still as the temp gauge was fluctuating a bit while I had it running. Not had time to try and sort it yet. The bleed valve is a great idea though!
@@SamsMotors use a high funnel when bleeding coolant system on p38 otherwise there will be air left, td5 was never a better engine hence m51 heads never go :) viscous fans always need changing, always get it new or new clutch
@@SamsMotors I am bud, I currently live in Dartford but went to Secondary school in Birchington and then onto college for a brief stint at Canterbury! Small world! 😃
@@SamsMotorswow that’s quite a lot but I bet these engines can do a bunch more. Does yours have an egr fitted? Looking at one myself but I can’t find as from which year they fitted an egr. I hope you find cause why it stopped running 🤘🏻
I got mine through the nct last Friday. I was delighted the hard work payed off. But it was not long lived. It's making a noise like the bottom end shell bearings. But there fine no movement and no particals in the oil.
Mine makes the same whooshing sound like it's locked on all the time. I'm same as you not sure if it's normal. I'm going to ennis on Sunday to get door cards for it I'll have a look the one he has and see if it's the same noise. I sent the injectors to be checked thinking diesel knock but there all strangely spraying perfectly. The noise is like a tap tap tap on idle and gets louder and faster as you increase the revs. But it's driving fine well it was before I started pulling it apart. I'll put it back together tomorrow and keep hunting.
Have a look to see if the 6mm line from the top of the rad to the header tank is clear of debris, I had a situation where that blocked and the radiator had air in the top causing the water pump to “gas” then overheated. Oh also blew the top of the rad apart 😂
I have a P38 4.6 Vouge.... It needs some work, but because it is so well built for now it just keeps going..... If I ever get some money I will give her the love she deserves.... :-))

have to have some luck once in a while Sam - if that tensioner had given up at speed - you might have ended up with much more of a problem. Not sure about the pulley but the fan is making a lot of racket. Pretty sure the clutch is seized despite it looking pretty new 🤷♂️
