I feel like this game's arstyle is a good example of what I like to call "stylistic diminishing return."
It'd be a kind of longwinded concept to explain fully, but the basic idea is that, with the time and money it takes to produce even fairly cheap-looking 3D or hand-drawn art, you could put out some legitimately god-tier sprites and tilesets. Having a more detailed base artstyle will exponentially increase the number of individual assets and details you need to create to make the actual environments look sufficiently populated, and if you don't have enough time and funding to bridge the "uncanny valley," so to speak, you can end up spending more to produce something that LOOKS cheaper.
Great review! Great game. Really hoping Sega will stick with this direction and improve it further.

While a HARD disagree about Pinball Carnival (my new favourite zone but hey you don’t like circus aesthetics so fair), I am so glad you liked it too! I’m happy to see people appreciate the game for what it is!

Great video! Superstars looks great, but I'm probably still going to wait for a sale because from what I've heard from others is that is has the same amount of content of Mania for double the price :/

If it wasn't for Sega saying that they'll be ditching sprite games like Mania, I would have given this game a chance but I don't want to support the replacement.
