    This game has no use of third dimension with camera because this game is programmed as if it's 2D game and 3D models are used just as if they were sprites. This introduced a lot of limitations.

      In retrospect, yeah, that was a point I could've elaborated on, but I do think it still could've been done in way more interesting ways with how you go from the back to the front. They do a really neat touch (I also didn't mention due to rushing this video out) with the unique animation of dying to the fang mech instant kill gun attack smash bros style, I wish they tried at least a few more things like that.

      The reason why they couldn't make more use of 3D is probably because of the coop focus (Though considering how poor that is it wasn't worth it lol)

    For that blocked passageway in Lagoon City Act 2 you need to use Amy to get there. It’s a pretty cute detail considering that it builds off what happened in her character specific act in the zone. Also enjoyed the review too 🤟🏿.

    I know some people think that extra lives are outdated, but in a game like this, I really do miss them, because going off the beaten path for goodies is just not as fun as it used to be, since the only extras are medals! Not to mention they took away the elemental shields! So really, the only thing worth exploring for in this game is the giant ring portals to special stages. And once you get all the chaos emeralds, that incentive is lost as well. They really did make some strange design choices.
    Y'all could have at least pulled a crash four / Sonic origins and giving us an option for extra lives.
    ...But then I remember how long some of the levels and *_all_* of the boss battles are, And suddenly, I'm incredibly grateful for not having extra lives

    being able to defeat a boss quickly isn't and shouldnt be considered a bad thing
    sonic's replay loop is about knowing the stage layout to go faster. Being able to take down bosses faster is just a sign of your own mastery, not some sort of design failure.
    so when superstars comes in with its pacebreaking bosses that grind the stages to a halt with all their waiting, it's clearly a bad thing. I have no idea why you compared it to some random arcade game. That's apples to oranges. At least compare it to another 2d sonic game like the rush series

    • @Xavier95621
      @Xavier95621  8 місяців тому

      I feel if you didn't get the point in the video, then I won't be able to convince you that their waiting in superstars isn't a bad thing. I'm leaving this here regardless.
      They have interesting things to dodge, and many minibosses only take 3 hits, besides using stage gimmicks or getting progressively harder. Yknow. What a good bossfight in a game does. Why is the waiting a bad thing?

    • @Sirius-Nightstream
      @Sirius-Nightstream 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Xavier95621 bosses getting progressively harder isnt a bad thing, just look at sonic advance 2 or Sonic 4. Bosses enter pinch mode after 4 hits. Difference is, it takes far less time than in superstars to get to that point.
      There's no easy way to describe it but superstars feels... obnoxious, with its windows of opportunity

    • @Xavier95621
      @Xavier95621  8 місяців тому

      What exactly is bad about the wait periods?

    • @Sirius-Nightstream
      @Sirius-Nightstream 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Xavier95621 let’s take speed jungle for example.
      Dodging isn’t hard, it’s repetitive and boring. The windows between attacking and waiting are so uneven it makes the boss drag for longer than it needs to.
      Comparing this to another boss, titanic monarch boss.
      It also has some waiting and the dodging is fairly easy. However when the boss opens itself up for damage, you’re able to at least get more than one hit in. Making all the waiting at least worth it since you can get your own hits in when the window is open.
      In this scenario, Superstars gives you a one hit window and goes through a waiting period. I don’t even get two hits in, just ONE for about 20 seconds just watching the boss spin and another 10 seconds to get its chain to hit itself

    • @Xavier95621
      @Xavier95621  8 місяців тому

      He's one of the worse examples, yeah, but a bunch of the minibosses, as I stated in the video, only need 3 hits anyways.

    I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree with it. When this game first leaked everyone was doomposting saying it was a terrible game, and somehow worse than Sonic '06. Then I played it and it was... a 2D Sonic game. As a veteran Sonic fan I think I can pinpoint why reception for this game is so mixed. Sonic Superstars is exactly what it was advertised to be: A Classic Sonic game. It does all the things Classic Sonic should do, but doesn't go beyond that to not deviate too much from the formula. This is why the new gimmicks (Emerald Powers and Multiplayer Co-Op) can easily be ignored and nothing of substance will be lost. The game is 100% beatable without any of these.
    However, Superstars feels like a game that should have been released 10+ years ago for the Xbox and PS3 era. It is the game "Sonic 4" should have been. However, all the luster of a Classic Sonic revival has been diluted over the decade because of nostalgia pandering with projects like Sonic Generations, Forces, and Mania. I believe most of people already got their Classic 2D Sonic fix by Mania, and are satisfied. I think everything that Classic 2D Sonic could be already has been done to death by all official games and fan games.
    Sega's mistake was making Superstars a Classic 2D game, when they should have made a modern 2D game. Modern Sonic is more flexible, they can do a lot more with it than Classic, and has a wider appeal. Classic Sonic only appeal to the "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" crowd. My theory is that Superstars was the fallback game made to release if Frontiers was a disaster, which would explain why Superstars tries so hard to abide to the Classic Formula without doing anything new, and why Sega parted ways with Evening Star and went with Arzest instead. Actually, game design wise this game has the same quirks as other Sonic games made by Naoto Ohshima (Sonic 1 and Sonic CD).
    Other issues are the full price, releasing near Mario Wonder, and the difficult. This game is HARD! Easily the hardest Classic Sonic game, rivaling Sonic 2. It is pretty ironic Sega marked this game towards kids and families, when I think old-school game fans will enjoy this game more. Despite all I said I agree with everyone who says this game is a 7/10. Too little, too late. This game feels like a lost PS3 game. But if it was their plan to make a bog standard Classic Sonic game, they got it, because the game design often feels stuck in the 90's, with trial and error design, and cheap deaths.

    You"ve made plenty of interesting points about Superstars. I especially agree about the boss fights and I personally appreciate how they have multiple moves and require strategy and patience and learning how to anticipate their attack patterns instead of simply cheesing through them because of the lack of invincibility frames, which was an issue with the bosses in the classics and Mania, which I consider to be jokes. I end up finding satisfaction in defeating the bosses in Superstars and mastering the mechanics like how I do with Cuphead and its bosses. I also like the idea of zooming out the camera for 2D Sonic games like Superstars or at least having it be an option to toggle, so it's convenient to anticipate oncoming obstacles and further increases your field of view. It also can make the game more accessible to newcomers to the series. In the end, I find Superstars to be a good game, but has plenty of missed opportunities and questionable design choices that hold it back from being great.

    While I still enjoyed the game I really really really hate SEGA and their practices on releasing games that is even finished baking. They really need to give their developers more time on these projects as I can see the potential in this game but its just not up to the quality of Sonic 3 or Mania. And it genuinely hurts me to say that. I've been looking foward to this game since its reveal at the Summer Games Fest. A Generations styled Sonic game was all I wanted growing up and I was SOOO close to finally getting that. The quality is all over the place with this game. The music bounces in between the CD/new jack swing styled soundtrack of Tee Lopes to Sonic 4 Compositions of Jun Sunoue or whoever the fuck made those. They need to stop doing that because do not work at all. The levels start to feel artificial or cheap after Pinball Carnival Zone, and level gimmicks start to feel out of place to the point where this game just doesn't know what it wants to be. This is evident by the Drill in Golden Capitol or the Phantasy Zone level in Frozen Base. It frustrates me because again I can see the potential with whatever this game was trying to do. I do however (kinda) see this as a step in the right direction if they want to keep the 2D and 3D games around. The fact they got the physics pretty close to the retro engine at all is a huge win in my book. As Sonic games almost never gets the physics and controls to play smoothly.
    Holy Fuck you actually read this? Thank you and I'm sorry! lmao

    Sonic fans are probably gonna say it’s a step in the right direction for the billionth time and that Sonic Team will fix it with DLC like a year after when the game has no interest minus Sonic fans themselves.
    And the fact that there was an interview with Naoto Oshima saying that he wants Sonic to beat Mario in everything… yeah you need to make a whole lot better games than you guys are doing now AND make it consistent. Which I’m definitely sure you guys won’t. I mean that has happened before.

    I like Sonic Superstars, but the three major things that bring this game down for me are the inconsistent soundtrack, the long and drawn out boss battles, and the post game difficulty spike.
    Minor complaints include dull level designs that could have been left out of the game altogether, and nothing of value would have been lost. Lagoon City and Sand Sanctuary, I'm looking at you! Golden Capital can stay because of story significance, but fuck that long ass boss battle!

    The battles in Superstars are the best in a 2D Sonic game, but that doesn't make them fun. I feel like an extremely superficial solution would be for the bosses to be their own act, because the counter would reset and it wouldn't tell you that you've been there for about 5 minutes. in the same act.
    There are three other non-superficial solutions:
    1) Remove the bosses from the first acts (so there's an excuse for the single-act zones to be split up).
    2) Make all the bosses a chase "a la Fang", a platform challenge against time.
    3) The last is a curious idea that Pariah695 gave in his video "Let's Desing a New Combat System for Sonic", that the bosses use the mechanics of the level while the arena is a kind of pinball table, which allows you to use the physics in your favor to damage the enemy ( examples of this in a basic form could be the boss of casino night or the boss of act two of the demo of the fangame "sonic overture").

      I don't see why you don't find them "fun" though. You forgot to say why you don't.

      @@Xavier95621In most of the games (which I also don't enjoy except for the Sonic 3 HydroCity act2 an death egg and the Starlight boss) I feel that the player is not rewarded much for defeating these bosses, unlike games like Megaman, in which you focus is getting to the boss, or fighting games, in which all your gameplay is bosses. In Sonic it's more about going through the levels, learning to control your character and understanding the new mechanics.
      The carnival pinball bosses fulfill this function quite well, the Piggy Pig was interesting, it was ok. I think my problem lies with Eggman himself, his animations to execute actions are excessively long, giving himself a large gap of time where he does nothing, Sky Temple being one of the greatest exponents, I feel that there should be an opportunity to attack him in all their patterns, and your skill or memorization of the boss allows for faster progress.
      With this I'm not saying that I want to bounce him eight times without seeing a single attack, just that the attacks have a way of being countered.

    Between this and Frontiers, I've also lost interest in any future Sonic games. Or rather, I'll never buy one at launch, not until they either goes in the bargain bin, or even the most jaded Sonic fans sing their praises. "Mostly good?" is now the status quo of Sonic, and when I think back on how fantastic SA2, the Rush games and Generations were, that's not good enough. These games should be much better than this, for the amount of time we've had to wait since Forces. I know this franchise is capable of so much more, but Sonic Team and Sega are so woefully incompetent that it's hard to pin all the blame on Arzest this time (after all, they've made decent games in the past, like Hey Pikmin, the Blinx games, Super Princess Peach and Yoshi's Island DS). If this is the best I can expect of Sonic games moving forward, then I'm not wasting any more of my time, money and energy on this franchise (especially at £55, are you kidding me? That's more than the entire Spark trilogy during a Steam sale). Sonic is pathetic now, and no longer deserves to be compared to the likes of Mario.

      Even if that isn't Sega's main focus now, the fact that Sonic games aren't at all comparable to Mario games when there was a point were it was, it's a bit disappointing.
      Nobody's taking away from the movies and, while the reception was middling, it was a success too. As a brand, Sonic is going the strongest since the early 2000's, but as games...they have been leaving a lot to be desired.

    I agree with most of your video but greatly disagree with your statements on Superstars bosses. I feel like when most people talk about bosses, they're mainly talking about the act 2 boss. You bring up other games' bosses when defending this game's boss fights, but there's a crucial thing that negates your point: Sonic isn't like other games. What makes a good boss fight depends on what game you want to make and what you're attempting to achieve.
    The point of sonic is speed, as in how fast the game is relative to your skill. In most levels in 2D classic sonic, you control the pace based on how good you are at the game, and I'd argue this applies to the boss fights. Bosses in 2D sonic are nothing special, rarely ever anything great, but at least you had the power to make things go quicker. Hell, the sonic mania flying battery boss you showed proves my point. With Superstars, yes they have a bunch of attacks, yes there are different movement challenges, but literally none of that matters because you only get one (two if you're lucky) hits in before you wait and do it again. Either the waiting periods are too long or there are too many waiting periods and it adds up. It doesn't matter how much stuff a boss has, the worst thing you can do in a sonic game is waste the players time. What doesn't help is that the act 2 bosses are at the end of the act. If it worked like, say, sonic advance 2 and 3, where the bosses have their own dedicated act, maybe the issues would be alleviated. If I remember correctly sonic rush adventure also had waiting periods for their bosses, but with each opportunity you can do 3-5 hits if you're skilled. You can use the emerald powers in this game, sure, but imo, it feels more like a cheat code than you actually having the skill to change the pace.
    I'm also getting the sense of "Simple, easy bosses = bad" from your segment. Like I said, 2D Sonic bosses are usually nothing special (With the exception of mania because imo mania has the best 2d sonic bosses), but I think it's a bit much to call them "bad." Like, they aren't exactly frustrating or even mind numbing, they're just...there. They're like a mere obstacle in a level, but it has to be that way given the nature of classic sonic design. Again, no where near terrible, just sorta underwhelming.

    • @Xavier95621
      @Xavier95621  6 місяців тому

      I would be more willing to agree with your sentiment if the classic series adhered to the mentality of speeding up fights with "skill"
      Thanks for the conversation
      (Most classic bosses are WAY too easy, so all these different ideas, graphical assets, and programming are all basically wasted, which is why I consider them actually *bad* moreso than mediocre)
      But I'd say about a solid 3rd of classic sonic bosses ask for a roughly comparable amount of waiting as superstars does amusingly enough. About half the fights in 3, mania and a few from the other titles for example.
      (Though this isn't taking into account fang in his rocket chair, and the 3 final bosses in superstars to be fair.)
      If the games were more consistent at putting forth bosses that could be beaten quickly due to mechanical knowledge I'd be willing to agree, but this aside, I also needed better constructing of my arguments for the bossfight section. Guess this is the result of somehow making this video in a week and a half :P.
      I wish more people specified that they meant moreso the act 2 bosses than the act 1 fights for superstars "taking an eternity" but as with many common sentiments for games out there, people don't tend to elaborate, or give the game credit where it's worth. They have a lot of cool ideas here, and I'm glad they're more thought out with what you have to dodge or how fights progress.
      Clones and most emerald powers can really help give you an edge with hitting a boss that's out of reach, like for eggman in the carnival zone or water palace, too, for example. The act 2 fights for sand sanctuary, sky temple, speed jungle, and especially golden capital plainly take too long as a punishment if you mess up I'll admit, but I'll defend most act 1 fights at the bare minimum.

    • @RockinSockems
      @RockinSockems 6 місяців тому

      @@Xavier95621 I'm trying to think of the bosses in 3 and mania that have comparable waiting. What comes to mind for 3 are the marble garden bosses, carnival night act 2, big arm, flying battery bosses, sandopolis act 1, lava reef act 2, and knuckles' fight with mecha sonic. Mania has CPZ1, Studiopolis act 1, FBZ2, Hydrocity act 2, Mirage saloon bosses, LRZ1, and TMZ2. However I'd still say that most of those bosses get away with it because with each window you can score multiple hits in, so you only have to go through one waiting period. Some of the midbosses I've listed also take less hits. This is actually why I have no problem with Superstars' midbosses, because they only take like 3 hits and not 6-8.
      Honestly the only sonic games that have at least a handful of exceptional boss fights are Unleashed, Generations, and maybe the advance games. Frontiers SHOULD be there too, but the fact that you can spam the same move with no drawbacks holds it back.
      I just remembered that Superstars has single act zones, so that could be a factor in others lumping all bosses together.

Sure, the recent assasin's creed games are over 100 hours with a shitton of stuff to do, but what's the point if 90% of those games are boring menial tasks. The skill ceiling for pizza tower and incentive to replay it is also really high, and it's a game I find really easy to stretch the playtime for in spite it being 4 hours long to get to the final boss.

    The one part that bugs me about the whole "games need to be long to justify replay value" argument is that it kills replay value imo. When I beat a game longer than 30 hours I'm less likely to go back to get 100% completion and imo, 100% a shorter game is more fun than just beating a longer game. I get more enjoyment out of getting 100% for Crash 2 than I do just beating the story of Horizon Zero Dawn, but maybe that's just me.

      Even if all the acts and bosses didn't have any mishaps or issues that heavily detracted from my experience, this still wouldn't be a game I see worth replaying unlike mania or generations.
      If mania was only it's 4 original zones, that game would still be way better than this one to me.
      If it was 40 dollars, it would still be a better deal.

Then you get superstars that at least tries new things and tries a new 2.5d art style with all new zones instead of relying in nostalgia. Sure, bosses can drag but other than that I liked it. I also feel people dog on the repeat zones too much, they do more than enough to make them feel new even if it's just the same name.

      3 has a ton of ideas and improvements but it heavily squanders said ideas. No use having immense creativity if you have zones like ice cap act 2 where it's literally 33 loop de loops you run on for mindless spectacle, angel Island act 2 for knuckles where it's boring, standard platforming, hydrocity act 2 where it's mostly speed and waiting on boring spinning barrels, same for flying battery act 2 with the stupid elevators they spam in that level, etc. It has the creativity of 3 games in one but they waste the ideas typically in the second act, focusing on boring gimmicks or blind speed without needing to work for it. Also super sonic breaks the game way too easily, and I don't even need to mention how most of the bosses are boring and suck, or the stupid barrel.
