I really like your two stage heating system. Something a lot of DIYers miss is the importance of temperature control for a consistent product. I'm guessing you are using K thermocouple? I've seen some high volume production stuff that uses fire rods for direct heat. I think for my first setup I'll go with the band heaters. To say the least, thank you for the video.
thats how you get the shot polished up and coated with the graphite. You spray the ramp and parts allow to dry per directions on the can and tahts it dont rub or touch it, dont get oil on it !
The whole lot could do with elevating on legs by around 30" so that removing the finished product would be easier, That is by not having to bend down to the floor to remove the tray :) Fantastic machine- Well done mate :)
stop and think about the reason for that......You want to dump lead into the pot blindly over your head??? you need to see into the pots and monitor their progress. Plus remove dross from pre melt pot periodically.
I thought this was more helpful than a write up. surplus heater bands on ebay, digital temp controllers and heat sinks on ebay,tube heaters from McMaster-Carr, rest of its machined parts and fabrication. video and you own imagination should get you there. i will not provide any engineering or parts and or material list. I only wish there was this much info when I started this project thats why I did it and the video but I dont have time to spoon feed info to guys who want to build one.
Steve each heating elements leg has a SSR so there are two SSR's per band, Also the Ladle heaters are all taken care of by one common SSR. Buy your SSR on Ebay and get the highest amperage possible, do not rate them by your amperage of the elements. OVER RATE THEM, you must heat sink them also!!!! and run cooling fans or you will blow them up!!!
Spray on your ramp and the threads and nuts of your drippers. The powdered graphite is about 1 tea spoon to 100 lbs in your tumbler. Harbor Freight has a cheap concrete mixer that works well and is just over $100! I get my graphite from a farm supply store used in seed planters "EZ Slide brand.
Just got Jimmys Maker. Worked great with his sample lead. I separated the zinc & stick ons than melted the rest into ingots. when I use my ingots I have to keep tapping the tray to make them drip whats wrong with my lead? Yes I fluxed it with wax.
Very nice... I couldn't stop watching to catch every detail. Just curious, did you ever sell it? or add to it in any way? I can't get over that you don't have to fool with it to keep it running as in some of the other videos where the operator is beating on the Ladle with his dipper to keep it running smoothly. No zinc will not work. I would assume that you are speaking of the new wheel weights. They will not melt at the 631 degrees that lead does so they are easy to spot!

I'm gathering bits and pieces in slow time to start my own system. Currently experimenting with SSRs etc and the detail in your vid is invaluable. May I ask one question please about the thermocouple sensor mountings? On the ladle it looks like the sensor is set on the top edge of the front panel: is that correct? Makes sense as you don't have to worry about immersing into the lead. And may I ask to about how the thermo sensors are mounted on the pots? Thanks again and thanks for helping us all out.
Absolutely genius! If you look at my videos, you solved the flaw in my system. Constant heat is by far the key. The delivery of heated lead to your mid as to not diminish the temp was a great idea. I find that variation in heat is my only enemy. My shot is not perfectly round, but shoots as well as any factory shot made. What is you percentage of waster per run? It looks like it is minimal. I am around 2%, but it is usually from the beginning of the run until the heat gets constant.

I have about 1200#'s of lead that I would like to make about 400 #'s of #4 and #9 shot. About 200#'s each! That would do me for a while!! Best production shot maker I've seen so far by far! Not trying to be a Karen or a safety patrol here but do you have any precautions in mind to help you not breath in the lead vapors produced so you don't build up lead poisoning in your body? I mention this because I had a friend who cast bullets that almost did himself in with super high lead levels in his blood and his wife not directly but simply from her washing the clothes he wore while casting.
650F is way below lead vaporization point. The only way you will get lead poisoning would be to ingest it or some type of contact absorption through the skin or cuts.

Probably was casting in the house without ventilation if this is true. I don't do any casting in the house or basement. It's all out in the garage or outside where I can get clean fresh air and run a fan or use the wind. Remember these people smoke marijuana and drink and drive and think it is safe! Say NO to guns and YES to drugs! I'll take the lead bullet casting and shot making any day instead! They never tell you that you can pop Vitamin C tablets when you are doing a lot of work with lead to help it keep from binding to your bone-marrow through your bloodstream and also helps flush it out of your system BEFORE it becomes a problem. The common Vitamin C daily vitamins you can buy at Wal-Mart. I have been doing this for years and so does many other reloaders and bullet casters I know.

I've done lots of projects and I know from experience that you have a ballpark idea of the cost of a project without sitting down and adding it all up. Im a mechanic, I have sand casted a "littleton shot maker clone" out of aluminum that im pretty proud of, the only thing im not liking about your machine is the noise level, is that the harbor frieght pump, im going there soon for stuff and would use it, if not for that damned wine. oh and did you cut your own nozzels or have them done. good job and thanks much.

Thanks for your reply, I'm trying to understand your SSR's. It looks like you have two heaters per pot equaling 5500 watts and 6ea SSR's total for your whole system. On mine I have 4 heater bands per pot equaling 6000 watts so I will need 8 SSR's per pot? Please advise Thanks a million Steve

5/16 316 stainless bolts with 1/8 feed hole in the 5/16 dia and then a .026 dia drip hole intersecting through a hex flat on the head.

Yes, each band need to be controlled via an SSR. These SSR’s maintain the selected temp via controller and I’m guessing a thermal coupler.
