*Actually* BangPD suggested that name to him when he suggested to use his underground rap name Gloss. He liked the SUGA name because it sounded like his position in basketball, shooting guard

Agust D is ranked as one of the most influential producers and songwriters in South Korea, who won multiple awards over the past few years, including best producer. He debuted at #9 on Billboard Hot 100 Songwriters Chart. He became the first male soloist in history to have a song and album reach No.1 on iTunes in 100 countries each. He is ranked Billboard's Top solo Korean Album Artist of 2020. His mixtape "D-2" debuted at #11 on Billboard 200. And there is just a few of his achievements. He has two self-produced mixtapes: "Agust D" (2016) and "D-2" (2020), which broke several records on music charts worldwide. He also produces/writes a lot of songs for BTS as well as for other top artists.
BTS was once asked what the difference between k-pop and other music was and Yoongi answered "It's just music". And he's so right, music is music, don't matter where it's from or what language it's in.
IMO, for lyric "fuck you I'm in pain in yo ass too far from the sugar", in hangeul (writing system for the Korean language) "SUGA" and "SUGAR" are written and pronounced in the same form "슈가" (they don't read the R). I guess he's playing with words and meaning there haha AND I love your effort to understand the lyrics better. "YOU NICE, KEEP GOING".
Oh btw YOONGI’S personality isn’t “cold”, he’s just quite a quiet and closed-off person and also a fierce rapper so it tends to come off that way but he’s actually a big softie :’)
I really love that you’re googling things and references you don’t understand right away. That makes me so happy and shows how invested you are in understanding this. Cant wait to watch more reactions from you!
Hey checking out your vid. Thanks so much for checking out more content. Love your thoughtfulness in your reactions. One reason he chose the name SUGA is because it stands for Shooting Guard, one of his favorite positions he played in basketball. He has said that being his persona of AgustD allows him to be more raw and direct with what he is feeling and thinking. The 2016 AgustD is a bit more arrogant than the 2020 AgustD, as shown in Daechwita where the current version of himself takes out the old version of him - he says he really wants to stay grounded in his music and not be power hungry like the king. Love his flow and creativity. Thanks for checking out more content. 💜
"min yoonji" bestie thats his female schoolgirl alter ego. also! suga means shooting guard (shoo-ga). AGUST D is DT (daegu town, where hes from) and SUGA backwards. anyways stan yoongi for clear skin
People confuse his name for sugar but it only means shooting guard. Its like people associating him with just a label, even when its wrong. AGUST D is suga backwards DT is daegu town, his hometown. agust d is basically Suga from his home town, the guy before SUGA in bts. tho his underground rap name is diff
I love Yoongi's solo music because he does both hype and savage "for the haters" songs and deeply personal and relatable ones and he does them equally well Also, loved that you were trying to understand things instead of just banging your head. And you have a nice voice :)
Yoongi's first solo mixtape is so laden with anger and emotion. It consists of tracks he's made in the time from before their debut up to 2016. He still had stuff to prove back then, anger and shade to let out towards all the people who doubted him and his group. It feels so raw and hungry to me, and that's why it has a special place in my heart.
Suga/AugustD is ranked in the top 3 fastest rappers in Korea. In one of his songs he rapped 114 syllables in 14 seconds. He went even faster on a radio show. You can find the clip on UA-cam. The impressive thing about rapping in Korean is the greater number of syllables in a lot of their words. He took and still takes a LOT of hate from the rap scene because he came up in the underground rap scene. There is an interview with him and Rap Monster taking so much shit from other rappers telling them they could have succeeded in rap but went kpop and called them girls. The fucked up thing is he was asked to produce a lot of musical for rappers that insulted him and he was never paid for his work. One of the men who talked shit in that same interview actually auditioned to join BTS but was denied. He came up struggling for years and he paid his dues.
Not sure where you got that info about his nickname Suga coming from " sweet" as a counter balance to his fierce personality. Also, I am not aware that a producer from Bighit would be the one giving him that name, I think Yoongi has picked it by himself by joining first syllables of "shooting guard" in Hangul ( Korean) which was his basketball position when he used to play and he ended up with Suga ( SU + GA). I am sorry for nitpicking like this but Mr. Min Yoongi happens to be my bias in BTS and a soul wizard of healing so I tend to go overboard :-) Apologies if it comes across as redundant nagging. He is such a great writer, lyricist and producer ( and rapper naturally). If you are interested to witness more of his dualities ( some of it truly funny ) I would recommend : Never Mind; First Love; Seesaw; Otsukare ( duet sung with J-Hope in Japanese); Daechwita; Eight (a collaboration with and his producers gig with IU); Blueberry Eyes + Burn it ( collaboration with Max); The Last ( a tough song to hear ); So far away ( another very personal one and my absolute favorite of his ); What do you think ( from his latest mixtape D-2) .....
Loved it but a few gentle corrections first. Sorry. Yoongi, the G is as in go or get. Also Suga IS a rap personality. The BTS rap line goes hard af and they get solos in the BTS setting too. Suga (the first parts of the words shooting guard, his basketball position) is also one of the most respected and sought after producers in Korea and many Western artists have worked with him. He is also a full member of the Korean Copyright Board. I think the "too far from the sugar" reference may be to Suga the idol. A watch out, if you will. But Savage Yoongi comes out when people put the R at the end of Suga so IDK. He's just the shit, man. He's probably been rapping, writing and producing for well over a decade now, as he came from the underground scene like RM. Agust D is the name he uses outside of BTS.

Thanks Linton for ur reaction to Agust D... Please do check out Agust D's #The Last #Give it to me #Strange feat RM from Agust D 2 Latest Mixtape #What do u think Well infact the whole D2 track is amazing,
Suga is the combination of the first syllables of SHOOting GuArd. He was a basketball player and that was his favourite position. Suga written backwards with DT for Dagu Town, his town, also written backwards - we get Agust D. He is singing for his haters. BTS had many, still do.
His mixtapes AGUST D and D-2 are worth it. His solo song First Love too. The lyrics, the emotions, the flow, etc. Please find a little more time in discovering what he can actually do. And then eventually discover BTS individually 💜💜💜
Kudos to you for learning more about suga before reacting to him, really shows how you’re actually interested in his work. Also it’s amazing how you interpret and try to understand the lyrics! Great work.
Haven’t even watched the video yet, but I’ve seen your other reactions and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the time and effort you put into trying to understand each message in every song. Excited for more! 💜🙌🏼
I don’t know if anyone told you yet but Suga’s name was actually chosen himself (that info isn’t entirely correct) because he used to play “Shoo”ting “Gua”rd in his high school basketball team. So in Korean it’s actually not related to sugar, it’s just the 2 first syllables of his basketball position! He only found out it was like “sugar” through English
When he say “fuck you I’m a pain on yo’ass too far from sugar” it’s because when they start a person tell him that if suga was for sugar and he couldn’t respond. And another person tell them (By definition, idol is a icon, but your country, an idol is not musical, but is an industrialized notice) and they also says ( When Bangtan goes up on stage and gets makeup done. Isn’t that a conflict with hip-hop? No, no it’s not makeup. It’s a girl. It’s like being a girl) In this solo his first solo mixtape, he responds to those who looked down on him. And he also says “Hey ho you can’t take me all ya fried rappers should be thankful for I am an idol cause I’m busy I’m busy 24/7 uh uh don’t need no break” he responded with that song
Thank you for the reaction. Next if you don't mind you can react to his other song 'The Last'. It doesn't have MV, only lyric video. You will focused more on the great music, and the deep dark yet really honest lyric.
I just found your channel and am really impressed. I like your reactions so far and how you really try to analyze the videos and are respectful to the artist. Thank you.
I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, lol. Suga is from the first two syllables for shooting guard which he played in high school. You really should watch The Most Beautiful Life Goes On: Story of BTS and you would learn all about each member. Also his name is pronounced Min Yoon Gee. Thank you for your reaction
I've only ever heard his stage name Suga being based off his basketball position as a shooting guard... shooooo gaaaah. Yoongi (Yoon Gi, also sometimes spelled Yoon Ki) is pronounced like the gee in geek... or like what they wear in Karate, the Gee. I've also heard it pronounced more like Key, on occasion. Music sample is from James Brown's "This Is A Man's World".
He got his nickname because he used to play basketball. He played shooting guard so he took the first to sounds of that and made it suga. Just for anyone wondering.
I really enjoyed your reaction, thank you! The sample that you were asking about that was used in this song (and in the intro on the album) is from It’s a Man’s Man’s World by James Brown & The Famous Flames. The lyrics that are included are: Man made, man made the car (x3) it’s a man’s world. Then you hear it repeated again through the song.
My favorite bar in this song is one you actually didnt talk about. He says "My seat is business, yours is economy, always behind me kissing my ass." I can never get over that
The sugar thing is in reference to his stage name suga. Many people call him adorable and sweet like sugar. So hes saying that he’s the opposite when you mess with him.
thank you for your amazing review, you captured all the points of the mv and the shades he sent, you did an incredible job and with respect, I had never seen someone analyze so well something that agust d had written, I hope you continue to analyze the bts songs and understanding what they are trying to say means a lot to us armys people who understand what bts want to say which is often transformed into other words and transforming it in other contexts thank you again
I fricken love how genuine you are and you’re paying attention to the lyrics SO WELL! Most reactors just watch this but this was entertaining. Thank you for enjoying the mv to the fullest🤣💙
Great reaction!! Suga is truly a rap genius. If I could suggest some bars, I suggest : RM - Joke BTS - The Cypher series BTS - Ugh HIGHER MUSIC - The purge
The sample you hear in the beginning is from the song "Its A Man's Man's Man's World" by James Brown. The line "Man made the cars". Hope that helps! I really enjoyed this!
I just love it when people truly appreciate his talent without focusing on the fact that he's a kpop idol... He's just too good, wether people want to admit it or not.

#Strange feat RM from Agust D 2 Latest Mixtape
#What do u think
Well infact the whole D2 track is amazing,
Thank for your reaction
Can you please react to:
- The Last by Agust D
- Strange by Agust D and RM
- What do you think by Agust D
That sample is James Brown "A Man's Man's Man's World" at the start of the song
when he says 'I'm from the D' he means he's from Deagu his birthplace
you just might be the best reaction video i've seen of a korean singer/rapper. you actullay react to the lyrics which most dont.
Suga is the combination of the first syllables of SHOOting GuArd.
He was a basketball player and that was his favourite position.
Suga written backwards with DT for Dagu Town, his town, also written backwards - we get Agust D.
He is singing for his haters.
BTS had many, still do.
My favorite his song is So far away ft Suran from his mixtape 2016
His mixtapes AGUST D and D-2 are worth it. His solo song First Love too. The lyrics, the emotions, the flow, etc. Please find a little more time in discovering what he can actually do. And then eventually discover BTS individually 💜💜💜
I really love your videos! You're so positive and uplifting~ I feel like I have a better understanding of the lyrics through your breakdowns, Thanks!
Yasss
Great reaction. Just as an fyi Yoongi is pronounced Yoon-ghee. Or a closer pronunciation is Yoonki. The k is a mix of k and g.
Kudos to you for learning more about suga before reacting to him, really shows how you’re actually interested in his work. Also it’s amazing how you interpret and try to understand the lyrics! Great work.
4:16 his other stage name is SUGA and also a reference to being far sweet
I love that you pause and look stuff up. Keep up the great work!
I love your reaction and review and how you analyzed it very well good job man.
7:27 - appreciated. The thoughtfulness you put into everything is out of this world
personally i love how im halfway thru the vid and you're only like 1 minute in lol
you should react to Yoongi's entire album D-2, it's a masterpiece and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it
Nice how he sampled James Brown's "This is a Man's World".
So cool you noticed the sample in the beginning!! Not many people actually notice it! It's from 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' by James Brown.
when he says he's d boy because he's from d, it's about where he was raised, Daegu
Haven’t even watched the video yet, but I’ve seen your other reactions and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the time and effort you put into trying to understand each message in every song. Excited for more! 💜🙌🏼
He is crazy good his tone, melody, voice, rapping, not breathing in his music
I don’t know if anyone told you yet but Suga’s name was actually chosen himself (that info isn’t entirely correct) because he used to play “Shoo”ting “Gua”rd in his high school basketball team. So in Korean it’s actually not related to sugar, it’s just the 2 first syllables of his basketball position! He only found out it was like “sugar” through English
For Those Of You Wondering, The Song Suga Samples At The Beginning Of This Track Is "James Brown - Man's World".
For the “So far from the sugar” he was talking about how people used to mock his name which is Suga and add the r at the end of it
THANK YOU. I’ve got AgustD lyrics tattooed on me. The song “The Last” is so relevant and legit.
Yoongi’s a fuckin boss
Thank you for the reaction. Next if you don't mind you can react to his other song 'The Last'. It doesn't have MV, only lyric video. You will focused more on the great music, and the deep dark yet really honest lyric.
I just found your channel and am really impressed. I like your reactions so far and how you really try to analyze the videos and are respectful to the artist. Thank you.
Bro I love your videos about agust d because your actually RESEARCHING AND LOOKING INTO IT and being respectful. 🙏
I love Suga🖤he is the king of kpop and rap👑
Am excited for your reaction to D-2 “what do you think?”😩
I mean the whole mixtape is literally a ✨MASTERPIECE ✨
Love that he flipped the flow when in the video he was released from handcuffs, and suddenly it was on!
I'm a huge k-hiphop fan but damn bro, I always get goosebumps from that bar at 8:37, that was straight up fire.
He got his nickname because he used to play basketball. He played shooting guard so he took the first to sounds of that and made it suga. Just for anyone wondering.
I'm Korean! And I love Suga very, very much. veryyyyyyyyeeeee much!!!💜🤩🥰
I really enjoyed your reaction, thank you! The sample that you were asking about that was used in this song (and in the intro on the album) is from It’s a Man’s Man’s World by James Brown & The Famous Flames. The lyrics that are included are: Man made, man made the car (x3) it’s a man’s world. Then you hear it repeated again through the song.
Yoongi is my first and ultimate bias. Talent and emotion.
him saying he is nothing close to sugar is a reference to his stage name within BTS as Suga
i’m pretty sure the sample at the beginning is from “it’s a mans mans mans world” by james brown :)
You put big effort to understand the lyric and I really appreciate it!!! Thank you so so much 💜💜
My favorite bar in this song is one you actually didnt talk about. He says "My seat is business, yours is economy, always behind me kissing my ass." I can never get over that
The sugar thing is in reference to his stage name suga. Many people call him adorable and sweet like sugar. So hes saying that he’s the opposite when you mess with him.
Again, thank you for appreciating Min Yoongi! Looking forward to your next reaction videos whether its about BTS or not.
thank you for your amazing review, you captured all the points of the mv and the shades he sent, you did an incredible job and with respect, I had never seen someone analyze so well something that agust d had written, I hope you continue to analyze the bts songs and understanding what they are trying to say means a lot to us armys people who understand what bts want to say which is often transformed into other words and transforming it in other contexts thank you again
🔥🔥🔥Your intelligent commentary is a plesure to watch
This has got to be one the most satisfying reactions to this song
I just love it when someone don’t even try to hat on k-music industry ❤️ because this is the real shit🔥
I fricken love how genuine you are and you’re paying attention to the lyrics SO WELL! Most reactors just watch this but this was entertaining. Thank you for enjoying the mv to the fullest🤣💙
Great reaction!! Suga is truly a rap genius. If I could suggest some bars, I suggest :
RM - Joke
BTS - The Cypher series
BTS - Ugh
HIGHER MUSIC - The purge
Alguien mas que hable español y vino porque le encanta ver las reacciones de los americanos la ver su rap🤔😨
i love the way you decipher videos
The sample at the beginning is James Brown's Man's World. Great reaction, you got it pretty much. :)
The sample you hear in the beginning is from the song "Its A Man's Man's Man's World" by James Brown. The line "Man made the cars". Hope that helps! I really enjoyed this!
So fun fact, Agust D is actually Suga DT, DT meaning his hometown of Daegu South Korea.
one of the few genuine reactions i've seen to agust d !! thank you for dissecting each bar and truly appreciating the music!! love ya
I just love it when people truly appreciate his talent without focusing on the fact that he's a kpop idol... He's just too good, wether people want to admit it or not.
