Years ago my dad told me “take care of the does and you will have the bucks” and man was he right. I haven’t shot a doe in 20 years, my neighbors do plenty of that. When I was younger I stayed in the woods when season started but I learned that was a waste of time, now I hunt the week before the rut and I’m limited out before the rut even starts. Also, don’t shoot the spikes! They will tell you everything you need to know and help you out.
I don’t like mock scrapes either but I only been hunting two years now got me public land 8 point last year. And I don’t like corn pile hunting because I haven’t been killing does. But I learned this year to knock down some does and so far I got 20 different bucks on camera 6 of them maybe 10 in day time I’m figuring it out I think some people give these deer a little too much credit. I drove to Alabama public land last year guy killed a 196 with a muzzleloader and he wasn’t far off the road at all. Thanks for these guys that makes my learning time cut in half.
I’m hunting scrapes this year in Harlan Ky and I’ve seen him but didn’t have time to get a shot with my bow. But he has a ton of scrapes in this bottom I’m talking scrape on two sides of more than one tree! Had I not seen the buck I wouldn’t have believed he made that many.
I just got lucky but I scouted my lease and put my stand and feeder over a 30ft cliff that overlooks a pretty good sized holler I've got to watch probably 6 different bucks hit scrapes in person not 30 yards from me the past 2 years it's awesome!
You always hear hunters talking about a scrape or rub line, I think it's more of a loop they have marked out than a line, that's probably why it takes a few days for them to make it back to that same spot, they're traveling the loop, who really knows how big that deers loop really is
Temporary scrapes are small basketball shape and size and sometimes v shaped but the permanent community scrapes will be big as four of the temporary ones
If they're in a spot does cross season after season. Also, the scrapes open every year. If a buck makes a scrapes he's coming back you just have to figure out when
I may be insane but I used to get jacked over buck sign when I was younger. When I learned to hunt, and kill mature bucks, I really don’t pay much attention to sign especially scrapes. Do I like scrapes in an area I hunt, sure! Killed a mid 130s this year snd passed up 20 scrapes on a ridge top to get to my side hill! Everyone seems to hunt the top ridge system on all the sign. My experience tells me it’s night time activity Just my opinion
VA mountain hunter here and a big fan of your channel/podcast. ESPECIALLY all the big woods content you guys put out. Keep getting after it! 👍
Lee county myself and I parrot your statement! Love the mtn/big woods info streams.
Va mountains sure are tricky

How do I tell the diffeeence between temporary scrapes and permanent scrapes. I’ll have big deer come tear up new scrape or an old one but not return?

@ yeah this one was big but he never came back lol. How often do they visit scrapes?
@ that isn’t an exact science but they will eventually visit them you just have to set up on one of the big ones and wait
@ damn

What episode of the Oklahoma episode mentioned?
Finding an insane amount of huge rubs but hardly any scrapes anywhere so I guess they’ve all gone deeper lol
