My kids love the comical series. They really enjoy the Grasshopper version we built as it’s a lot of fun to drive. They weren’t really sold on the Avante but I ordered one anyway because it’s the only Tamiya comical RC that’s 4WD. I plan on putting a sport tuned motor in it. I figure that the faster motor combined with it’s 4WD should give me an advantage over the kids 😜
I’ve put a Sport Tuned in mine with a 20t pinion. It’s now way more fun than with the silver can. Just fast enough without being silly and the potential of causing damage. I think if I put the 18t pinion back it it would wheelie a lot more😆
Just bought one and a comical frog for my wife for her first build and she cannot wait! They're light hearted fun and will be great to wiz around the garden etc. And another kit to build so win win.
Awesome video. I followed your direction on the window decals but goofed up on one of the intake decals. Oh well, it looks good and is fun to drive. I just finished mine.
Love my Comical Grasshopper. Compared to most of my other RCs, it gets way more looks when I take it out. I think it's just one of those things you have to see running in-person to appreciate. Of course, the comical kits aren't for everyone, but I have to be honest, I am shocked how many people go out of their way to point out how much they don't like something. Just be happy Tamiya is making money off them, so they will still be around to make the cars you DO like. :) But again, I really do recommend checking one out in real life before judging, you may end up being surprised. :)
Nice video Gavin., of course the purists of the hobby may not find it their thing.. totally understand that... I’m gonna stick with my first thoughts... just a bit of harmless fun👍👍👍👍
It’s a tradition that started with the Wild Willy. I really love the fact that Tamiya is always a bit quaint in their designs, very japanese, and I do feel they are always approaching the the hobby, in _all_ its aspects, completely ... correct, for lack of a better word.
I appreciate that you made this video a long while ago. I’m a 74yr old intending to buy this - wondered though what the bearings were you used for the drive train instead of stock. And what grease you used? If you happen to recall I’d really appreciate the information. Tx so much
A lot of these newer type of Tamiya RC cars that are coming out I really think are marketed towards the style and taste of what the Japanese people like and then just introduce them to the rest of the world to see if they like them. If you watch the Tamiya UA-cam Channel you noticed they do a lot of family style racing mostly with kids and and younger people but with a few older people as well.
Wow! Its pretty cool you show every section of the build...great help to those who are new in building kits. I’m hoping to find one of these and have it sent to my side of the world.
Great video, Gavin! I'm with you on this one, I do like it, but not quite enough to buy one! Thanks for the honest review, and yeah, I think this will go down a storm with our younger RC enthusiasts! All the best from Mark... :)
You sure did edit this one a lot I'm glad to see you have a imagination looks pretty cool how you went around all your Avantes that was pretty fun didn't know you're going to come out with a video today I got up in the morning and watched it something to watch in the morning its like Saturday morning cartoons love it should have got a bowl of cereal it would have been perfect
Thanks for the great build! These are wicked, esp for newbies.. Some times you could really do with a zoom, for example when you were showing us the window decal issue with not having any extra supplied. Personally I didnt really know what you were on about. Im sure its not practical as no doubt you dont have your own personal cameraman. :)
Great video of a cool car. Am sure it will go down well with the younger set. Ps love the way the shocks are set up...normally these things are way too bouncy. 👍
Very fun chassis indeed I have a normal GF-01 and it's really fun. I put on steel steering turnbuckles because those heavy wheels will break those stock ones.
Great video and review. I am not 100% sold on these, either, but if you compare it to something like a Vanessa’s Lunchbox (normal, not comical!) I can see the greater appeal. I do like that driver!
Reminds me of the Wild Dagger and TL-01 line of cars and trucks. I bet you would outfit it with Wild Dagger Arms etc to extend that wheelbase out something crazy (or the Tl-01 LA arms). I must say though there are a ton of similarities between that comical and the aforementioned vehicles. Seems like an easily modifiable car to be really rad.
I use a knife and a few different scissors depending on what I’m doing. I use snips for the body posts and cut them on the same angle as the body, not just directly across.

Could I ask what Kg of servo you would recommend for the car as it's quite concussing to work out for a first timer? I am happy to upgrade servo saver and horn if recommended. Great video and I'm thinking of making this my first build (so I don't cry when the kids want a go).. then move on to something just for me after :) Thanks
Tamiya kits are priced to high for a introduction into the hobby I believe. As much as it sucks I would say wltoys does more for the introduction now. I didn’t realize how big those buggies are Gavin.
Hi Gavin, I bought the comical grasshopper and hornet for £84.00 each from jadlam racing!, when I was on their website a week ago they was still for sale at that price!!. Steve maNcHeSter.
Worst part of the WR and GF kits are those suspension arms. I recomend upgrading to aluminum aftermarket suspension arms. Not sure why Tamiya made them from the softest plastic possible.
Gavin, it's a cheeky, quirky little guy! I don't really approve of the Avante name being MUDDIED on that contraption. 😖😡 HOWEVER, I'd have one!! 😜 Looks like great fun. I would just Paint it a different colour and use different Decals. Why not then get a Comical Grasshopper or Hornet??? SIMPLE. 4 Wheel Drive!! It's goofy, in a slightly endearing way. Please stay SAFE! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
You know I just realized since my Tamiya monster Beetle Trail that just came to my door today that the comical Avanti shares the same chassis as the monster Beetle Trail. Comical Avanti GF-01CB Monster Beetle Trail GF-01TR The big difference with the monster Beetle Trail besides the details is the portal wheel axles.
Gavin, could I ask, what kg servo good for the bigwig, rack and pinion scares me a bit with a very heavy servo so that’s why am asking the question and all tamiya buggy’s, coz I’m starting to Collect them. I watch your channel a fair bit, I enjoy your builds and talks about tamiya
I haven’t rebuilt my Bigwig yet so I don’t have any personally experience with the rack steering design but I would set your end points as any servo with a good KG pull can damage something.
Not too sure about this, it looks a cheap build but fairly good when finished, nice to see one of the vanquish's in the line up, by far the best looking car there ! 🏎 😄
It's Tamiya being Tamiya fun first. Not for me but I can see what market they are shooting for. Reminds me of the very first Nikko and Tyko radio shack rides your parents bought you. Fun for a couple of days until someone shows up with a proper buggy. I would buy one on discount for my kids so the stay off stuff. Lol.
I think it’s odd but I have seen people but quick brushless motors in and really run them and that I can get involved with. I think they are like many Tamiya kits you get one and well... you have to get them all! Lol I keep saying no, but I might break and make one really fast just to tempt others to faster!
Great video but nope this car is not for me, not being rude but I think that it's sacrilege to an iconic car 😖 but if this gets the younger generation into RC cars all the better. Keep up the excellent work Gavin. 👍

LOL Great post and yes, you will be able to take them.

What about the Comical Hotshot?
@@guymarotta2596 That kit wasn’t released when I wrote those comments. I got A Comical Hotshot now. Looks better then the Avante.
Just bought one and a comical frog for my wife for her first build and she cannot wait! They're light hearted fun and will be great to wiz around the garden etc. And another kit to build so win win.
My daughter (8) loves her comical Frog. Lots of fun and remarkably good at drifting on loose surfaces. Was fun to build and easy to maintain.
I think I might have one…just to have on the shelf next to my Avante. It just seems like they should be together.
The car is just for fun, hence the comical name lol. Some people just got to ease off the party pooper phase
Awesome video. I followed your direction on the window decals but goofed up on one of the intake decals. Oh well, it looks good and is fun to drive. I just finished mine.
I really like this new line! I’ll end up buying one before the end of the year, it is a nice companion to the Lunchbox.
Yeah, I picked up a lunchbox back in January. A real classic Tammy Buggy.

Fantastic !!! 👏👏👏 great video ... this car looks like sooo much fun 🤩 steering servo placement is a little odd 🤔 but if it works all good 🤷🏻♂️
Great video, Gavin! I'm with you on this one, I do like it, but not quite enough to buy one! Thanks for the honest review, and yeah, I think this will go down a storm with our younger RC enthusiasts! All the best from Mark... :)
Mine just shipped out today. Can’t wait. I feel like a kid again and not guilty because the price isn’t ridiculous.

Big tires and extra ground clearance is great. Better in the grass than a real Avante...lol.

Love it , I can get one easy , watching from Japan, I m English 👍🏻
I hope more buggies and even monster trucks get the comical treatment.
Do the other comical shells fit the 4x4 version. Roll on comical Fast Attack Vehicle.
Cool! I have on in shipping somewhere between Hong Kong and here! LOL! Love the running part! The OG and Black Avante was a nice touch!
Just finished a comical hot shot.
Came out Nice 😎 Pops a Nice Wheelie 🤪
Great video of a cool car. Am sure it will go down well with the younger set. Ps love the way the shocks are set up...normally these things are way too bouncy. 👍
I think Tamiya got the shocks bang on for this car.
Very fun chassis indeed
I have a normal GF-01 and it's really fun.

Kicks its been a while Im R,C, Its good to see all is well

I’d like to see a comical Blackfoot or a comical clod buster
Comical Blackfoot would be fantastic
Nice Gavin
How do you cut the body so straight? With scissors or a knife, or both?
And how do you cut the body mount posts so the top looks nice?
I use a knife and a few different scissors depending on what I’m doing. I use snips for the body posts and cut them on the same angle as the body, not just directly across.

Forgot to mention the L parts suspension arms that are labelled N parts in the manual.
That's a nice little build......what transmitter are you using? Love the channel...👍
It’s the Core-RC CODE FHSS stick radio.

Those are good for little kids

FTX are worth a look when starting out
Hi Gavin, I bought the comical grasshopper and hornet for £84.00 each from jadlam racing!, when I was on their website a week ago they was still for sale at that price!!. Steve maNcHeSter.
Nope all sold and now back to a normal price. Best I've seen currently is £109
Worst part of the WR and GF kits are those suspension arms. I recomend upgrading to aluminum aftermarket suspension arms. Not sure why Tamiya made them from the softest plastic possible.
What are those micro tamiya buggies sat on top of those pots? they look small than the (Tomy Q-STEER TAMIYA MINI MICRO BUGGIES)
Hi Paul, these are Tamiya Georgia. You can get them on eBay
@@RCKickschannel Thanks will check them out
So did you do the widening and lowering.... Was it better n more fun?
Nope it's still stock. I have seen a few people do it and it performs well.
Nice 😀👍

Hiya Gav, can ye tell me what pitch the pinion is on this, I want te switch te a 20 tooth steel gear

Comical as a first build or a grasshopper??
Honestly, that's more an Avante to me than the Mk2..
Not too sure about this, it looks a cheap build but fairly good when finished, nice to see one of the vanquish's in the line up, by far the best looking car there ! 🏎 😄

Not my cup of tea I’ll stick with my original buggies
Hi Gavin, this one not for me! More for kids.
I dont think I will buy one, it's good that you have done it but no, 😀😀😀
Cool video but the music is god awful!!!!! Sorry can’t say it enough.
Agree, this music is so insanely awful
