I had the original 1992 one (my brother broke the white nylon gear assembly hitting reverse when it was going full-chat forwards!), this video has inspired me to get some parts and repair it and new batteries and have it running again!
Just got back into rc vehicles after almost 20 years. I am a retired Army Veteran. My first truck was a Bezgar HM123 which a buddy and I decided to to get 2 so we could race and jump and do truck therapy(I was in a VA hospital getting treatment and counseling for TBI). Then once I was home I got a real truck Arrma Big Rock. Over 20 years ago my first truck was a Tamiya Blackfoot, then a tamiya 4WD rally car, then a Team associated RC10T. Now that I am back into the hobby I want to do another kit. What one should I do first? This one looks good I found it on sale at AMain for 192 plus a 10 off coupon and it looks like full bearings and adjustable tie rods
That was hilarious! Gavin you were like a kid in a candy store🤩 I think this the 3rd build I’ve watched of this kit and it’s starting to grow on me. The engineering and design are better than I gave it credit for. Great tip with the shafts in the A arms make sense and sounds like a must. Thanks for sharing 👍🤓🇦🇺
Great show, Gavin! The Terra Scorcher looks to be pretty well specified and has some nice touches, look forward to seeing that body go on! I think I should have ordered one! All the best mate! :)
Thankyou for that info! I'm actually rebuilding my vintage Terra Scorcher and was wondering what the issue was with the gearbox getting stuck with the turns cheers!
Fantastic bit of Kit!! 😁 I remember mine from 1989 (when I bought it anyway). I distinctly remember getting it because I HATED the Uni-Shock in the front of me Hotshot! 😖 I liked it. Good handling Buggy, with softer Springs. Shame I'm only getting so much from Stimulus.... I'd absolutely get the re-re!! Enjoy and Please stay SAFE! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I have all 4 of this family as the Thundershot was my first Tamiya build. I upgraded it as the option parts came out so I had basically had a Terra with a Thundershot body. I actually use the next size up shock on the front (basically two of the fronts from the Thundershot) so I had a bodged higher front shock tower which I have kept on my old car as well its MY old car. Lover these.
7:25 just FYI, you don't need to improve that upper link because it sees very little loading. The lower suspension control arm bosses - yes they see ALL the load imparted by the wheels so those lower control arm mounts need to be very strong. I'd be surprised if it didn't also the need the reinforcement, why not throw it on there if you have it?
I’m super jealous it’s still on preorder status in my country it seems everything I might wanna build is back ordered or N/A PreOrder 🤷♂️ I’m always hesitant to stop mid build because I’m afraid something will get lost while it’s in storage especially a new build I’ve got 3 upgrade projects sitting all the kits are drivable as is all the parts have been gathered just waiting for the disassembly/assembly to begin but they were taking a back seat to my new race buggy build I started it only to temporarily loose steam due to the human malware crisis and all the RC tracks being closed It’s mostly done now at this point just needs the body painted and the suspension setup and tuned a point I could safely shelve it and start something else just have to decide what 🤔 🍺😎👍🏽
Hi Gavin I've measured parts E1 and BA13 with a digital caliper they are 3.6mm thick a 1150 bearing is 3.9mm thick so a 1150 bearing is only 0.3mm thicker. I've changed all my E1 and BA13 parts for the bearing the gear box is still spinning.
I've got my one arriving today👍😁 hopefully this time while I'm at work one member (whos working from home) from my family will actually answer the door when he arrives this time🤨!
Nice one Gavin it will look fantastic with those gold wheels! Tyre lettering will really stand out too! I am excited what tamiya has instore for release next?
Hello, thank you for the video. This will be my first RC build, I've done motorbike engines before but nothing on this (smaller) scale. Would you say in the kit they provide enough diff grease and shock oil please? Another friend has just built his first kit, a Neo Fighter and said there was just enough of both supplied to complete the kit and not a drop more. What weight is the shock oil please if I need to buy some more, or could you recommend a large bottle of something suitable? Ta :)
Hi Gav, mine is arriving 2mo! can’t wait, l built a thunder dragon with my dad when I was a teenager and it’s a cherished memory, gonna build this as a thunder dragon with my daughters if they want to help..... can you please tell me where you got the replacement spline?shaft? thingies?! lol you replaced that the suspension arms ride on? Would like to do the same with my build (can see from video only the lower ones available at the mo) thanks buddy :-)
I had a hornet years ago and keep toying with the idea of getting another rc car. I'm after something pretty beefy and a buld it from scratch kit. Ideally something that will go off road and electric. What could you recommend? I know budget is going to be the first question but I would be after something that is good value but is a good kit to keep me busy building and a decent size.
Was not a fan of these cars when they came out. It’s a shame. I’m going to buy one now. I’ve got the same problem as you. I’ve got 5 unbuilt cars because I’ve got to many unfinished projects!😂 Nice video, well done. Keep up the good work.
Hi Gavin, what a cool video. can you give me a suggestion, which tamiya 4wd rere i should have? which one is the most iconic apart from avante. looking forward to hear from you, cheers.
So you did a terra scorcher video with a thunder dragon that's not painted but decals applied...then 2 days later mark Bryan rc does the exact same thing with a scorcher and unpainted thunder dragon...is there a secret underground society I'm unaware of lol
Gold Pans are load less money in the US as its an American classic buggy. SO many have been sold you can find them all over the place. The issue is shipping, import tax and handling fees. These all add up to loads extra so turn a good value purchase into an expensive one unfortunately.
13.5turns brushless wil do fine in this , Turnigy TrackStar 13.5T Sensored Brushless Motor 3040KV (ROAR Approved). This motor is now in my frog.... with the tbles esc. and it dous wheelies now...
Yep I think it can take some brushless fun. Only thing is the propeller drive rod is an old coat hanger so it needs an upgrade as it will flex under power and wobble all over the place. I’m sure this could be an easy aftermarket upgrade kit.
@@RCKickschannel Yep, I know the coat hanger drive shaft you are referring to. My cdt teacher and I ended up fashioning one from 5mm aluminium rod and just filed two flat ends to fit the cups. It went into my old Manta Ray back in 1993? and worked amazingly. Basically ended up stepping on the stock one and it got a kink in it and never spun true afterwards so took my car to school and Mr Fowler fixed it for free! Thanks Mr Fowler RIP you legend. Also RIP my Manta Ray that got lost in Adur river circa 94. Drove it off a foot bridge on my way to the bmx track 😞
N W mine is on 3s brushless and the propeller shaft has so far taken it, when you apply big power it wheelies so unloads the torque off the shaft anyway. Will probably break it next run after typing this!
Go to a certain supplier online to price the kit (it's all new to me so I like look) and I see that Tamiya blue paint is now out of stock. Things will settle down again soon. If this affair has taught us anything it is we have taken being able to buy stuff with a click of mouse for granted.
Get used to this for a while. As far as I’ve heard, Tamiya in Japan is now closed (as of only couple days now). The news of that will also hurry people up buying anything for projects. Online RC suppliers must be the busiest companies out there currently.
@@mr.airgun6921 I think a lot of 'hobby suppliers' are busy. That's if the hobby fits in the back garden! We just take online shopping for granted; we take many of life's modern conveniences for granted, PS: Just noticed your username. I am an airgunner too and some shops are shifting no end of pellets and plinking rifles and pistols. :)
I noticed Tamiya dont appear to have included the 3 thrust races that were in the original, instead they use the washer and plastic part that would have been used in the lower spec models in the range/family, if you compare the build manual from the rere and original you will see the difference, the 3 thrust races are used on the plastic bevel gears that join the prop shaft.
@@RCKickschannel yeah you can put them in, I believe it was one of the differences that the Terra Scorcher had over the Thundershot etc as it was fully loaded option wise, if you look at both manuals you can see the difference in parts used, also the old video that Tamiya used to play in the model shops says includes 24 ball and thrust races, the rere only comes with 21 bearings, probably no real difference performance wise but interesting that Tamiya would leave them out. The thrust races are available as they are used in a fair amount of Tamiya models, i dont think you can substitute a normal ball race as they are designed to handle loads in different directions, I need to have a look in my parts box to see if I have any from old projects etc.
@@garrymorris4515 I did see them listed somewhere for sale but they are not as easy to find as normal ball races, they support the load placed along the shaft rather than around the shaft if that makes sense, the bevel gears will try to push away from each other so the gear pushes against the gearbox case, so odd they would leave out 3 tiny bearings, i know its a cost saving but the point of the Terra Scorcher was to be the top of the range. The standard setup is probably fine it just set off my "thats not how it used to be" radar lol.

Did it really come with four universal shafts?
did you buy the ball race kit or dose it come with that
How does this compare to the Bigwig, mechanically-speaking? Is this improved somehow?
Steering on the Bigwig isn’t as good and it’s a heavy buggy.
Do you know if there are any differences between this kit and the re-release fire dragon?
The gold stripe on the decal should cover and little bleed...
Change the wheels on the 959. A lot of dosh but worth it.
does it come with a steel pinion?
