- Mono-Green Stompy is a classic Modern archetype, but can it work in the Modern Horizons 2 fueled 2022 Modern format with the help of the mono-green Ball Lightning Groundbreaker? Let's find out!

2nd Opponent: "I'm tired of you beating me with jank."
Seth: "Groundbreaker+Vines for lethal."
"I'm tired of you beating me with jank" says the guy that went turn one Slippery Bogle, turn two SFM...
I love when you explore how older decks have evolved over the years, one of my favorite themes! Thanks for the awesome content as always.
Looking at the author of the deck... And now I'm envisioning future anthropologists trying to reconstruct our civilization from fragmentary documents, and there someday being an encyclopedia entry about the unknown scribe PoopinMyFacex3, known only from a random frame of a video from the early 3rd millennium, which scholars have used to partially reconstruct the ritual game of Magic, used it contemporary religious rites.
I can’t wait for that day to cum
🤣🤣
SEVERELY underrated comment 😂😂

20:48 A really intricate moment! In the Boggles matchup, you scooped after this, but blocks were tricky enough the opponent might make a mistake and die. I understand why you did, since Kaldra feels like GG and I have the benefit of pausing the video to run the numbers, but I figured laying out the scenario was interesting to at least myself.
Opponent is at 8 life. If they don't chump with boggle, they're dead and might not have seen it. And they go to 1 if that block isn't on Scooze, otherwise they're at 3. Kaldra having first strike means there's a window for Scooze to eat your dead creature and grow to 3 power. SL is already 5 power or Pelt Collector grows to 5 before dealing damage from first strike killing SL, so it doesn't matter which Kaldra eats. Boggle can't block SL, only stops a single point from PC, so they're taking 7-8 without chumping Scooze. But it looks like 6, when they're going to blocks, if they're not thinking about first strike. Definitely gives them a lot of room to mess up, if they're trying to conserve their namesake card to kill you with.
At worst, they'd need to hold Kaldra back the rest of the game (or until they get lifelink) or they die to a Groundbreaker off the top. Or an Aspect/Vines on Pelt Collector. Or getting even a slightly wider board than them. Heck, if Kaldra blocks SL then Pelt Collector is one Groundbreaker etb away from trampling over Kaldra. I guess my point is we have a bunch of live topdecks, more so if they don't block exactly right (probably kill PC, chump Scooze, so trample isn't an ongoing threat, and they can survive a Strangleroot off the top). See, Kaldra isn't that scary, ...right? =P
You can't trample over Kaldra, but the rest looks solid!
@@chrismortenson8136 I'd missed that last ability where Kaldra exiles! Apparently I've never seen it come up.
@@erfunk Usually Kaldra is big enough to just kill something, in which case it doesn't trigger
One of many times that I wish Seth would let the game play out just a bit more and see what happens.
Seth historically scoops way too early. But he's a content creator (a great one!), not a competitive player. It's unfortunate to see him walk away from winnable games but I get it.
This video makes me Happy and Sad all at once.
Mono Green Stompy was my very first modern Deck. Steelleaf and Seth's original deck inspired me and I built it to take in store when I started. It was fun and I would get a few wins here and there. But seeing it now is interesting... But really just shows how different the game has become post Modern Horizons 1 & 2. The game has become so much faster, and has so much free value and interaction that a deck like this just doesn't stand the same chance it used to. It's still one of my favorite and most nostalgic decks to play, but it just doesn't have the wheels it used to.
I am so glad to see Groundbreaker get some play. Thanks for giving some attention to mono-green stompy, Seth!
The GGG troll from eldraine that attaches to mana on death and can come back is always nice against heavy removal meta, and is very budget as well as spicy.
It's probably a better option than the 5/4 Elf.
it’s from kaldheim btw
@@techoutsider5631 thx, you’re right. Old growth troll
@@Xoulrath_ I feel like for Aggro, Steel-Leaf does the job better. Old Growth is more for ramp and combo packages. However, I do see the benefit as it will literally always be able to provide you with devotion for Aspect.
Something that people always forget regarding Vines of Vastwood is that it isn't exactly hexproof. On your own creatures, sure, it's hexproof. On an opponent's creature however, Vines says that **opponents can't target that creature this turn**. So it essentially doubles up as a target spell fizzle. (That used to be very relevant way back with Splinter Twin as it would fizzle the Aura from landing)
Decks like this in full budget mode always make me wonder how good they get when the budget constraints come off. Add some boseiju, etc. Maybe vengevines for the top end.
This was the deck I built in modern a few years ago after seeing your original video on it, that's neat it hasn't changed too much but gotten a couple good new additions
38:06 play the packleader, rancor the geist and swing. Double aspect represents 15 trample damage. There's a decent chance they only block with 1 shadow, because they need two to be lethal. It's not guaranteed, but you had a chance to win there.
I think that the first MH2 match really shows the different design philosophy with MH2. Almost every MH2 card has some sort of card advantage stapled to it: The monkey has a built-in curiosity, the pyromancer draws 2 sometimes, and sometimes makes 2 dorks. Even all the elemental ETBs are each at least worth a card and the bodies are also not bad. Especially fury where the 3/3 double-strike body really blanks most aggro creatures along with killing 1-2 on the ETB.
Mono green really does not have a source of card advantage to compete with the new threats, so even if pound-for-pound, green dorks are more efficient then MH2 threats, each ok MH2 card also draws another really efficient removal spell with the free card advantage.
Lair of the Hydra should replace Treetop village, it is a lot better and not expensive.
This answer is correct.
treetop village is better in this deck tbh
@@mushnib maybe a split? The hands where he had 2 Villages and couldn’t curve out because they were tapped really hurt.
Stressful at the end when Seth hovers over his instant pump spell, contemplating casting it on his creature with protection from instants 😬
Definitely think veil of summer could be good instead of gut shots
Dryad Militant seems worse than Experiment One. It doesn't trigger Pelt Collector itself, but having a second Pelt Collector effect in a deck that's all about splattering out massive creatures with low costs seems good.
I think it’s time to bring back deathrite shaman to keep graveyard and prowess decks in check.
Pretty sure the graveyard decks would just play Deathrite Shaman themselves and get more value out of them than everyone else like legacy delver
@@nikhilchhagan7371 didn’t know delver played deathrite. Is that the temur build with uro?
@@demiurge2501 Deathrite is banned in Legacy too. But Temur Delver would probably play it if it weren't banned.
@@demiurge2501 it got banned bc it was too good in the deck lololol
Honestly DRS is fine for Modern now.
First time coming back to magic the gathering in over 5 years, coming back to watch Seths content again, this man still hasn't learned not to scoop early XD why!? I guess its why we see Seth still making this content instead of trying to compete competitively
Having played the deck on and off for years, I'll always put a spoke in for a couple of copies of Vivien, Champion of the Wilds in the SB. She's a great source of card advantage, comes down for cheap and really helps to grind in the control matchup.
I built the original back in the day. It's good to see the update.
My main takeaway is I am unsure if Aspect of the Hydra is that great. Its really just pushing advantageous board states further, but as the games showed, thats not what you needed. You needed more tools to fight through the removal. Also I don't think you fired up and got into the red with treetop once and the tapped part of it actively hurt you more than the card helped. If there was any way to find room in the budget for CoCo I think you could have edged out more wins.
that force on the vines was a huge play. I hope your opponent was popping off on that. Top 10 career ending counters
Why not Snow-Covered Forest and blizzard brawl for the removal?
Oh my, the memories. In 2015 I just picked up mtg for the first time and I immediately become a fan of this channel. At the time there was one video for each different match, leatherback baloth was a legit good card and I had no clue what Seth would look like. Mono green aggro was my first and only modern deck for as long as I played the format, I got so many player angry with a 50-ish euros deck.
I've grown up a lot since then, at the time I still had to enroll in my Bachelor's Degree...and mtggoldfish was always at my side.
Ps.: I used groundbreaker a bit in the past. It was so fun lol
Fun fact, most of the deck has a promotional version of it.
I have it all promod out in real life
Something you could’ve done against living end game 2 is pithing needles on the cyclers since it’s an activated ability 🤷🏻♂️
I almost wish this video would have come out next month. Gaeas Gift from BRO looks great here
I used to like modern. A lot. But lately I've been wondering if wizards just made MH sets to make a lot of money and kill a format at the same time. We all know that they didn't like modern because decks didn't rotate, but if that was their plan they succeeded, I'm still going to play modern, but I'm buying counterfeits.
They definitely made MH to make a ton of money. However, they didn't make MH to kill modern, they made it to kill legacy. 80% of the cards in legacy are also in modern.
The way I see it going is, they will throw legacy and vintage together, modern will be the new legacy, pioneer will be the new modern, and they will make it rotate.
@@travisrose7164 yeah, but where will they go from here? We already have 2 mana 7/7 flyers, 3 mana 11 power, a one drop that if it lives you win and every spell is basically free now, power creep got so high that it made 99% of cards unplayable, I don't know if I want to see where it goes next
@@ArleneMarvell it DOES get worse. Have you seen the absolute mess YuGiOh is now in terms of powercreep? Magic will get there but its still not there quite yet.
@@Weenhander seen it? I started magic after the whole Cozmo and nekroz meta, o just wanted to play flufals man
@@ArleneMarvell then you know lmfao
0:42 Wow, Leatherback Baloth was the best 3 drop in 2015? I half expect to see Erhnam Djinn in the deck list. The power creep is real.
Best budget 3 drop.
When Leatherback Baloth was spoiled, it was considered really strong and a good reward for committing to a mono-Green deck.
I have really wanted to make a Moni-Green Modern Deck for some time and this video just increases that want of mine! xD
hey, with the sideboard, i was wondering why deglamer over tear asunder? whats the case were exile is less effective then shuffle? feels like im missing something
I'm glad p00pinginmyfacex3 was able to construct this deck. Shout out to p00pinginmyfacex3
at 6:39 why not slam groundbreaker, trigger the pelt collector to give it it's third counter and make it a 4/4 trample and swing with the team holding up vines of the vastwood unlicked as protection or potentially dismember something? I think Seth totally missed that Groundbreaker having 6 power would give Pelt Collector its third counter. Groundbreaker dying at the end of the turn would have also given the Pelt Collector another combat if it survived combat.
When I first read the title I thought Groundbreaker was going for $97!
I dont think Treetop ever won a game for you, but it being tapped hurting happened every match. Seems like it'd just be better as Forests or like Hashep Oasis.
At 42:25 I think you could have just cast both pump spells and attacked for 9.
Hexdrinker can't be targeted by instants. :/ Still though, he could've animated Treetop and kicked Vines on it. They aren't playing 1-drop removal in Cascade.
I'd like to run a set of Sylvan Anthem in this, and maybe a couple old growth trolls in place of steel leafs
Reminds me of playing against death shadow m19 era ptq and i put a few ball lightning in mono red burn deck...I saw my opponents eyes buldge at the math not at all expecting it. 2 for 1 bolt.
That match one opponent was getting the top decks of the century. Of course when your deck is just full of MH2 cards anything you top deck is gonna be good.
@MTGGoldfish, what happened to preview/spoiler discussions? World's is over and all I care about is hearing Seth talk about new cards for two hours. Let's go go go
I wonder if canopy lands would be better than treetop villages (not taking into account budget)
I don't know how that Bogles Stone blade deck was being ran but I had one when Yorion was legal that was just a funny deck to play. They take out removals because of my bogles and they die to kaldra/stone forge. They don't take out removal I beat em down with aura bogles. It was extremely inconsistent though lol.
How many lands are in that deck? I've never drawn that many with a stompy deck
What set are the basic forests you're using in this one? They're so pretty.
Theros Beyond Death.
Ah yes, the Modern (Horizons 1/2) format.
Awful scoop in match 2 game 1. Even with Path and Khaldra, opponent has to chump with boggle, take 3, and is at 3-5 life and can’t attack with Khakdra or else die. With 20 life you have 4 turns to rip groundbreakers.
Ok so add red for blood braid elf, bolt and bogart ram gang ?
Why woud you not save something with aspect of the hydra and not get greedy been up a creature on the next turn not sure if would matter but might have. at 15:55.
Yo almost all these cards were in Penny Dreadful last Season, is a fun deck
if you want to make your greenscreen better light the greenscreen, it wiill make keying it alot easier
I dont know man. It's not like it's not interesting. I just can't stand this guys type of saying anything. This up and down and pressing words out like he hasn't enough air left... If he would just talk normal. Yeah that would be great.
Sorry dude, have to say it or else it will not change. Now I have a chance of you reading this and maybe there's more like me so you change it. If it's just me than ignore that.
Dude I just made the same comment not realizing other people felt the exact same way. It’s decent content but completely ruined by this dudes forced tone of voice.
Can't wait for jund 12 ball with all the 6/1 hasty boys on against the odds
Mana Tithe, Groundbreaker: any other sweet Planar Chaos cards that opponents never play around?
Hi, unrelated to this video, sorry, but are you not doing spoiler videos for Brothers War?
I swear people in modern haven't discovered there's this weird mechanic called flying.
Doesn't really matter when most players have 16-20 removals in their decks...
31:45 that's a thing that happened once hahaha
Cool deck, I think I might pick this up
5 seconds into the video and I'm surprised there's no Primal Forcemage in the decklist
Would love to see a scurry oak combo modern deck
surprised there wasn't any veils in SB
Damn i remember that original deck pretty sure i still got it sleeved up in a deckbox
Check out the username on that decklist
In, not on? Extreme...
@@EastWindCommunity1973 the heart wants what it wants
I'm so tired of 90% of modern decks with 16+ removals that i started putting rebuff the wicked and it's almost never lost...
Fury is the bane of creature decks and all the free elementals are why I quit modern. All the modern die hards will preach about how diverse the format is because of how conceded they are with their perspective. Modern is just another form of legacy for cowards at this point. Explorer and pioneer are fun but modern design is gonna have this be the next Yu-Gi-Oh
If I want to play one deck in Modern that I can play despite the meta changing... This might be my deck
I skip to the end of any game where a Fury is cast. I hate that WotC made those faces of the format.
I’m waiting for the day you being back soul sisters with archangel of thune for against the odds 😅
Seth where are your spoilers videos for brothers' war?
I can't belive that Steel leaf champion is the best option for a 3-drop.
?? Is there some other three drop aggro creature with three green pips that’s better?
dude when did u start playing mtg... since when is an evasive 3 mana 5/4 not an extremely good card... what are u looking for in a 3 drop...
Well it's also very beefy for a 3 drop, a 5/4 is a huge body, and it has pseudo evasion so that it can't be easily chumped by tiny creatures. It still having the 3 green pips for Aspect of the Hydra works out better than other similar 3 drop options, it kind of checks all the boxes and there's not really any better options, I mean look at Werewolf Packleader, that slot used to be Kalonian Tusker lol. Now instead of a GG 3/3 you have a GG 3/3 that draws cards and has an activated ability that allows you to pump it. SLC directly replaces Leatherback Baloth (GGG 4/5 vanilla creature with no text lol). That paired with the decks he played against (Ragavan, Living End, all the new Modern Horizons stuff) compared to the original Budget Magic version of this deck from 2015 just really shows you how crazy the power creep has gone in the last few years.
@@jakecollin5499 It is good, but I am surprised that they have not printed something similar but better in the last 4 years.
I'm actually suprised to not see Questingbeast as a 1 or 2off
Mono green Ball Lightning 🌩️ pretty cool!
Ahh Yes. Classic Mono Green made by Poop in My Face.😅
Treetop coming into tapped really seemed to hurt you in several matches, and cost you the game a couple times. I'm wondering if there's room in the budget for Lair of the Hydra, or even if playing the green pump desert would've been better. The desert can pump Steel Leaf or tramplers for giant hits.
I think those Treetop Villages cost you several games. I wonder how it would've been if they had just been replaced with forests.
Sylvan Anthem?
Super happy you played this cuz the only thing funnier than watching Seth eat himself to death is watching him lose games of magic.
Fury has ruined so many fun decks !
Dryad Militant just seems so...whelming in 2022 Modern. Even a boggle or a gladecover scout as a sneaky target for vines/aspect feels better than a savanah lion that just dies to...everything.
Good against Murktide if it sticks around.
Surprised old growth troll didn’t make the deck. It dies and turns into ramp and a late game body. And lair of the hydra would have worked better than the village overall early or late game. Still a fantastic deck
I thought troll would be great in the deck to but I tried troll for awhile and the text on leaf came in more handy then trolls did. Leaf is good against dredge, yawg, merfolk, goblins, some time’s affinity and can’t be blocked by close to 50% of most creatures that see play in decks
Please please seth can you build a deck that uses khalni hydra? It would be insane in mono green stompy, especially with the aspect of hydra :D ....*Whispers value*
Ah, so heartbreaking on some of these losses! These budget decks just don’t get any breaks from the opponents top decks.
Seth should have leaned into *Vines* harder in the last match.
They need get rid of the evoke elementals, they add nothing good to the format. They just makes the decks I wanna play like 8-ball even worse.
I’ve seen people defend it with “oh but it makes modern more similar to legacy”
I HATE LEGACY I DONT WANT MODERN TO BE LIKE LEGACY
Stuff like Modern Horizons is legit the reason I play Pioneer. It feels fresh that any top-tier standard deck from the last 7 years is playable in one format.
@@togglebott7748 exactly. Just play legacy if you want a format like legacy
@@LunerKunai I love pioneer but they REALLY need to ban Karn, Nykthos, and some black card to make black midrange nonsense less good

mono green is so cool
You think this is jank you should've see. My old timbermare vitalize green stompy back in the 2010s!
Would goyf be good in this? Obviously not budget but seems like a good fit
Goyf wouldn't be that good because you can't fuel it
Hey Saf, I' m pretty sure it's "furry" not "fury"
groundbreaker was hilarious
for an upgrade thats really worth the money, taking out treetops for lair of the hydra for the untapped-ness might be worth doing

Why no Sylvan Anthem? Its better than it looks
No way I'm here this early.
