Fun fact 2: you can get the 3 coins heart with just a hp up item, beating hush just add the third coin at the start. I didnt know that until I started a new file
I've always loved the story of The Keeper, how Ed decided to do a full fledged ARG to unlock a character. He realized you can't have hidden stuff in the game's files if you wanna have a proper community effort to unlock it (at least, in the sense of figuring out secrets) so he sprinkled breadcrumbs of secrets in game that lead to real world stuff. It makes me so proud to be a part of this community.
I love it because it demonstrates Ed's petty sense of humor. The Lost was meant to be a complex ARG that unlocks a challenging character, but with the ARG null and void, it *lost* part of it's effect. So he made another one which was way more complicated and full of slights to the dataminers, added a useless Item to the game, and made the reward for finishing the ARG an incredibly difficult and unfair character. Like T Jacob doesn't even come close to the level of unfair Afterbirth Keeper was/is.
I kinda would love to know what would have discovering the lost been like if he wasnt datamined and people actually had to piece together the 4 last wills to unlock him from dying in the sacrifice room with the missing poster as ed intended it
I love how Edmund's answer to making an arg when dataminers exist was just to simply leave the character out until people found the last piece of the puzzle.
You act like this is a big deal, angel deals have a very high chance to give you absolute garbage, treasure rooms are almost always garbage, devil deals are way cheaper for tainted keeper than any other character because the exchange rate of 15 coins = 1 heart (you can get sales on devil deals as the keepers they can even occur naturally and are pretty common) is ridiculously good on the keeper and just absolutely nothing on the tainted keeper you're basically on the lost level of devil deals here and last but not least the shops are so stupid with him.
@@eredinbreaccglas8396 my man I agree that it’s not something that will honestly apply over the course of a run (apart from having to pay for good items like Library, Boss, Secret, or Planetariums) it’s still a major detail of the character :/
Oh, this is an interesting video concept! One thing though, Store Key doesn't make it so that Greed doesn't appear in shops; That's Greed's Rib. Store Key makes it so that shops don't cost any keys to open. This effect was essential fused into Tainted Keeper, seeing as all shops are free to enter and he doesn't even need the trinket. Same with Wooden Nickel, with the chance to spawn a coin every room turning into a mechanic where every enemy drops a coin. This also turns the luck factor, the 50/50 odds to get a coin, into a skill factor, with coins rapidly disappear when they spawn, so you need to dodge the enemies and kill then in the right order to get the most money.
We can't forget that the type of coins are pretty random (thanks for existing and being useful, RNG!) and can have natural priorities to players almost subconsciously, meaning a slightly higher difficulty because a player can't just automatically go for that nickel or dime, as it might mean damage or even death of a run. It is so strange. In a game where greed is such a huge role, and one of the character's (and it's alternate version) thrive off it, you have to fight with yourself to make sure you aren't jeopardizing yourself by being TOO greedy.
Small correction: The idea that 109 was the number of hours it took to datamine The Lost is a long-running misconception. It's not true. In actuality, the source of the number... is actually the Greed mode Donation Machine jamming at 109. Which, according to Edmund, was a bug relating to the missing unlocks in that build (which, if you recall, Afterbirth released with a ton of items and unlocks missing... somehow, and got fixed mid-ARG). The number 109, then, only emerged as a part of the Keeper ARG, you won't find any references to 109 posted by users ANYwhere before Afterbirth's release (believe me, I've tried to research it). The Lost ARG connection was formed by the community at the time in a frenzy to try and make sense of the number, at the beginning of a cryptic ARG. In fact, if you go digging, you'll find the very same Reddit post that started this entire misconception, which reads more like conspiracy logic and makes several assumptions in an attempt to force a 109 connection to the number of hours it took (the math didn't even work out to 109, and besides, The Lost was already datamined for a time before the methods were fully revealed publicly). Nevertheless, the post gained traction, even got picked up in a Kotaku article about the Keeper ARG, and the rest is history. It's true Edmund continued using the number even within the Keeper ARG, but not because of any believed connection to The Lost's ARG. He's talked about before that when you make an ARG like this, it's this ever-evolving and emergent puzzle with the community, it's something you adapt with as a creator. When the "109" bug appeared, why not make it a part of the puzzle? Especially when the community is latching onto it so strongly... Then in the aftermath it basically became the funny meme dataminer number, which is then referenced in Dataminer's description (and even hidden in a few Four Souls card artworks) as a joke.
if 109 was a reference to that edmund would seem extremely butt hurt. also the lost "ARG" is not an arg it's just a secret in the game. I don't understand why people call it that.
I still not sure if you are fully right. 109 is pretty strange number for donation machine to jamm, if it was a bug related to missing unlocks, because the closest unlock is for 111 coins. Also I had a theory that entire greed mode and keeper unlock theme was based on item Money = Power item (which is related to greed and coins and stuff), because its id is 109. May be its just a coincidence, but idk, for me it feels like its more then just a coincidence.
The Keeper is genuinely my favourite challenge character. I love the coin hearts, and it feels great to start with massive damage output. If only they gave ??? a good thing like they did the keeper and maybe i'd actually try unlocking stuff with them

Very cool history and how it became a goose chase even though people ruined the fun before that by "cheating" and data mining the character first. The fact that the character was hated was good, the character being bad justifies the datamined info even though people did the goose chase and right after the devs updated the game to give the new character. What I wonder if that's why the character was bad at first, based on how Edmund Mcmillen says/does things, I wouldn't put it past him... lol
I didn't know Keeper had quite this big of a legacy behind him as the centerpiece of an entire real world ARG. Very neat, and a nice bit of trivia for my favorite Isaac character. And I'm talking mostly original Keeper. Even during the Afterbirth days, Keeper was just boss. He was frail, but his source of health was the most common resource in the entire game, coins. Combined with the shop key trinket, it created an interesting game of hp-economics, where you weighed how much of the money on the floor was your safety net and how much was getting dumped into shop-funds. It was similar to what characters already did, but now amplified, as the amount of coins you could amass per floor let you play the system more reliably, as hearts are honestly more fickle and "moody" about when they do or don't show up. Devil beggars and sac-rooms in particular were massive on Keeper, because when you saw one drop, you knew it was time to prepare. Start dropping coins, squeeze every inch of the level for it's worth and try not to get hit as you built your run around gaming these systems for massive advantage. He was cool, offset by a rather strong learning curve and not the strongest start without a floor 1 sac-room. Much fun as Tainted Keeper is, I still have a stronger lean towards the original Keeper. The fact that they gave him a bit more health as a safety net and made devil deals a new angle to approach the money-game from was all he really needed. He never really needed to be a challenge-character, so I was fine with him being a bit buffer and was generally treated well by the retool. Tainted Keeper is incredibly fun, but in a very overblown, hedonism-overdose-sort of way. He's so crazy and wacky with his fucked up shops and the money-gimmick, that it sorta makes you feel a bit numb after a while. Like "Oh, hey, another amazing T. Keeper run. Who would have guessed?" If I were to compare it to something, I'd say if Keeper would be considered a cone of soft-served ice cream, Tainted Keeper is like a tub of Ben & Jerry's. Soft served ice cream can be seen as a little plain. Usually it's just a single flavor or 2 flavors and as far as ice creams go, it's quite plain. However, it's all about how you enjoy taking that ice cream with all it's toppings from sprinkles to caramel coatings. Do you like keeping your shop key to try and game the shops? Do you take those tempting devil deals, even when Keeper is so well-equipped to game angel deals in sac-rooms? Usually he's constricted enough that he has to commit to a gameplan, but what those gameplans entail are flexible enough that there are multiple avenues to enjoying him. T. Keeper, much like a Ben & Jerry's tub, doesn't give a single shit. It'll just cram every strange combination of flavors and textures together in ways no human was intended to think of. T. Keeper doesn't need to consider tactics and approaches, when the shops will usually bank-roll him with amazing item after another. It's incredible fun, but you can't over-indulge. You gotta take it every now and again and tends to need a more proper meal behind it, like a serving of greens in T. Isaac or Forgotten or a hearty serving of meat and potatoes in Judas or Samson.
Tainted ??? is always supreme 💩 he's an absolute war dog in greed mode and has so many bombs per floor in the regular play style if you know how to use him well
Tainted Forgotten is better. I haven’t unlocked either yet but tainted keeper is probably second best under tainted forgotten. I can’t wait to unlock both of them though!
I still don't have Keeper unlocked so i don't have big opinions on the gameplay, but I was around in the ARG chat trying to figure out the clues as it was going down, getting giddy as the updates rolled out in real time all the way to the character finally being unlocked, all that going down while working an extremely long overtime shift at work, so I certainly feel attachment to the history!
I had no idea that the keeper ARG was so heavily rooted in the datamine, or about the whole number 109 thing - which explains why the dataminer item has the tagline "109" when you pick it up
I personally only played Rebirth on launch and then 1 run of Afterbirth+ on a friend's house so i never really played Keeper before buying Repentance 2 weeks ago. Personally i really love playing both Keepers, i did suffer a bit until getting Wooden Nickle but he's not that bad, i think the change to Devil Deals and the 3rd coin heart is what made the character go from nightmare to enjoyable.
@@kanjhan3540 wow you must be fun at parties, I hope you learn others can have opinions and that is okay. Good luck learning fractions later this year buddy, they can be tricky
Great video! Thank god that they changed the Hush unlock. This makes the Keeper feel like a character which improves himself the longer you play him (similar to a donation machine) + the unlock isn't a f*ck you like the original achievement anymore.
The lost arg part is a misconception, the community was actually very close to unlocking the lost before the dataminers got involved, they had worked out the vast majority of the puzzle pieces and knew the process on how to get the rest, it was only a matter of grinding the few remaining ones out which wouldn't take more than a week at most. All the dataminers did was show what the remaining pieces were which basically solved the unlock method iirc. People blame the dataminers for ''spoiling'' the lost but in actuality it was just the community that worked much, much, much faster than ed wanted and he blamed the dataminers as a scapegoat.
For those who didn’t know the trinket Mom’s kiss is a way to obtain more health on both forms of the keeper and if you have mom’s box the effect is doubled, making mom’s kiss imo the best trinket for both forms of keeper
Even Afterbirth Keeper could spiral out of control, given that Sacrifice Rooms were buffed into what they are today. So with enough money, you could try to get a teleport to the angel room and a angel room item. Still worse than the buffed current Keeper, but you could still have pretty nifty stuff!
"it took dataminers 109 hours" maybe to figure out he existed. Maybe my memory is just on the friz again, but I remember the Datamine for how to unlock "The Lost" taking over a week, at which point it was already all but solved by the community on Reddit (iirc it was the order of deaths that was left to figure out). If 109 was intentional and indeed based on some rumor of how long it took to figure out The Lost, that'd be an epic amount of salt on Edmund's part, and I really don't take him as the type to get THAT mad.
Fact 1: This character was Edmund’s revenge for the data miner’s that unlocked the lost. Fact 2 : keeper and tainted keeper are actually based off of the greed and super greed mini bosses (Edit: I find it interesting that keeper is associated with the number 109 which is 1 digit higher than spiritomb's 108)
I still think it’s weird how Edmund made Tainted Keeper just a better version of the Keeper. There’s virtually 0 drawbacks. On paper it’s like “oh well he has to pay for items that are free usually” but if you run the numbers you will encounter far more than 30 coins to get your items per floor so it’s moot anyway, with the trade off of being able to choose from like 4 items a floor being superb. Plus the extra coin heart isn’t a default thing The two characters don’t have any difference in play style and method, one of them just gets to have everything that they want because they make so much money with no sacrifice, and the other is like playing the game with mittens on.
7:32 Lmao, today when I opened Isaac I saw this skin instead of the normal keeper skin and wondered what happend. Didn't knew that it always activates on April fools.
My favorite tainted character is between tainted Jacob or tainted forgotten. They've both got unique game styles that I personally enjoy a lot. Jacob has pretty much a missile for a brother, and forgotten has a bone to pick with anything you can throw it at.
I'm gonna just say something here that's not that much about the Keeper but it does kinda matter when it comes to him. I know that Ed got mad at the dataminers for discovering the Lost too early and then the entire Keeper ARG happened, but now imagine what would have happeened if all of that didn't happen. Months, maybe even years pass, both Afterbirths get released (possibly even Repentance somehow) and the community finally figures out how to unlock the Lost. The first people unlock him and what do they get? The dying in one hit, no dice, no spectral tears pile of bull that was Rebirth Lost. After most of the expansions have already been released, leaving pretty much no opportunities to rebalance him. Adding to this, with Ed not getting pissed and deciding to get back at us for datamining Lost, we might've not even gotten Keeper.
@@explosiveNewt Did you see that part in the video where Olexa showed the puzzle pieces? That was all they had. Considering you had to die in a pretty specific way AND get the correct parts to actually be able to figure out the unlock method, it was probably more than a day away (it's definitely less than until Repentance's release, I did overexaggerate that).
@@jasan9973 The community had already figured out how to die to get the puzzle pieces and how to tell which ones went together so all that was left was the grind to get the necessary pieces and then someone dying in the right order.

Keeper run. Who would have guessed?"
If I were to compare it to something, I'd say if Keeper would be considered a cone of soft-served ice cream, Tainted Keeper is like a tub of Ben & Jerry's. Isaac or Forgotten or a hearty serving of meat and potatoes in Judas or Samson.
what the fuck are you talking about jesse
what the fuck are you talking about jesse
This was a very interesting video, as someone who had only vaguely heard of Isaac before repentance, please do more!
Tainted Keeper is the best new repentance character. Nobody can change my mind
But T Magdelene flips the quality of Items on thir head! And T Judas is so anime!
Tainted ??? is always supreme 💩 he's an absolute war dog in greed mode and has so many bombs per floor in the regular play style if you know how to use him well
Tainted Forgotten is better. I haven’t unlocked either yet but tainted keeper is probably second best under tainted forgotten. I can’t wait to unlock both of them though!
@@belalaloca t keeper is way stronger but kinda boring in my opinion
I’m more of a Tainted Lost guy. Every run is just busted to heck with him.
i never knew a stone golem and a dead child had so much lore
I really really adored learning this from you
This is such. A cool video so many things I didn't know
I still don't have Keeper unlocked so i don't have big opinions on the gameplay, but I was around in the ARG chat trying to figure out the clues as it was going down, getting giddy as the updates rolled out in real time all the way to the character finally being unlocked, all that going down while working an extremely long overtime shift at work, so I certainly feel attachment to the history!
Honestly never knew about the Keeper ARG until today but it sounds like it was insanely interesting.
oh man this is such a good video. thanks for the great content tyler
This video was really great! The history about the easter egg hunt was awesome!
Love this kind of video! You should do more once in a while :)
They take veryyy long to produce. This video took me about a month of on and off work to get done. I’ll try to do more
@@OlexaYT oh damn I see, well it was definitely worth it.
I like how they teased keeper in the trailer by showing a shopkeeper come to life in the trailer
I'm 100% sure Edmund did all of that and made the Keeper sh*t out of spite lmao
Great video, I like these in-depth videos from time to time
Make more videos like this it’s good and engaging never got bored or felt it dragged on
Nice job telling the story, informative and entertaining.
Love him or Hate him, he has become back his money.
I knew everything in this video and still enjoyed it very much !
Love this style of video!
It'd be neat to have videos like this for other characters as well
For every character... Except from azazel
I had no idea that the keeper ARG was so heavily rooted in the datamine, or about the whole number 109 thing - which explains why the dataminer item has the tagline "109" when you pick it up
Small factual thing -- the extra coin heart added in repentance isn't baked in but is instead a part of the "keeper now holds a penny!" unlock.
I really did not knew about the Story of The Keeper, great video!
As someone who only started playing in repentance this is really cool
i like the tainted keepers description
I personally only played Rebirth on launch and then 1 run of Afterbirth+ on a friend's house so i never really played Keeper before buying Repentance 2 weeks ago. Personally i really love playing both Keepers, i did suffer a bit until getting Wooden Nickle but he's not that bad, i think the change to Devil Deals and the 3rd coin heart is what made the character go from nightmare to enjoyable.
I don't even have keeper unlocked, and this made him my favorite character lol
Shut up I have been playing sense the og isaac and keeper is still bad just like you
@@kanjhan3540 wow you must be fun at parties, I hope you learn others can have opinions and that is okay.
He may not be favorite to play but I love his repentance design so much.
Wow the first half of the video was very fun to know!
Ever since I watched this video, I can't stop seeing the number 109 wherever I go, honestly.
Including the number of brain cells you lost watching the video!
okay you got me there.
Aaaah this was so good!!! Really like this! Lost next?😶
very good video, would love to see more of these!
I think the greed machine breaking at 109 coins is them poking fun at the dataminers who found the lost at 109 hours after launch
I love that game and i didn't even know about that arg, makes me love it even more
Edmund did not let the lost data miners betrayal go.
I've been to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk many times, and never knew that it had that missing poster of Isaac in one of the shops.
I was there to tell olexa to promote the pyramid in the description
Even Afterbirth Keeper could spiral out of control, given that Sacrifice Rooms were buffed into what they are today.
So with enough money, you could try to get a teleport to the angel room and a angel room item.
Still worse than the buffed current Keeper, but you could still have pretty nifty stuff!
He's a fun yet infuriating character
I am glad to have played Rebirth lost, Afterbirth Keeper and then done it all over in Repentance with their buffs.
Delerium with the keeper in Afterbirth+ was a nightmare
"it took dataminers 109 hours" maybe to figure out he existed. Maybe my memory is just on the friz again, but I remember the Datamine for how to unlock "The Lost" taking over a week, at which point it was already all but solved by the community on Reddit (iirc it was the order of deaths that was left to figure out). If 109 was intentional and indeed based on some rumor of how long it took to figure out The Lost, that'd be an epic amount of salt on Edmund's part, and I really don't take him as the type to get THAT mad.
I feel like the keeper being able to buy devil deal items is symbolism for how money is evil
Tainted Keeper is also my fav tainted character as well! I have both post-it notes complete for Keeper and Tainted Keeper
Cool vid I love the keeper. I ended up skipping through afterbirth+ and to repentence so I didn't know he used to have 2 hearts.
I know it's kind of obvious, but Keeper's sprite was also changed in Repentance.
I had no clue that the keeper had such a unique quest around it
Thanks for your videos and hard work.
if you think about it, Mom should have wooden nickel too..
since she beat Isaac as well.
Fact 1: This character was Edmund’s revenge for the data miner’s that unlocked the lost.
Fact 2 : keeper and tainted keeper are actually based off of the greed and super greed mini bosses
(Edit: I find it interesting that keeper is associated with the number 109 which is 1 digit higher than spiritomb's 108)
Olexa, there is one really cool character mod, that i think you would like.
It is called "Glare" (comes with a t. Version)
I really liked it myself.
Ya it’s on a list. I played the AB+ version last year but gotta check out the rep version
@@OlexaYT Cool!
This was so cool please do more
good to see my little greed boy got some love in repentance, he just felt like wasted potential before.

Could you make a video on the repentence arg? I'd love that
There wasn’t one lol
nice video man
Great video :) I'd definitely watch videos on other characters
Dont say it dont say it dont say it
Hey Olexa whats the weather outside
Found this channel and couldn't stop myself its pretty cool though
Never heard that one before
I still think it’s weird how Edmund made Tainted Keeper just a better version of the Keeper. Plus the extra coin heart isn’t a default thing
The two characters don’t have any difference in play style and method, one of them just gets to have everything that they want because they make so much money with no sacrifice, and the other is like playing the game with mittens on.
Thanks to those people who did all that stuff so I didn't have to. I may dislike the character, but I love the effort on Ed's and the hunters behalfs.
6:00 correction: people took the words from the money = power (where are you?) and said it to the voicemail, unlocking the second part
The dataminers also found a brownie recipe and skinless hush.
Tainted keeper is one of the most fun characters to play
2:16 please in the name of god charge your lil brimstone and lil spewers while you shoot this is gonna make me have an aneurysm
This is literally stock footage
Imagine if IRL devil just charges you 15$ to become an eldritch demon.
Tainted Keeper is goated
Easily one of my favorite characters
So Edmund was just.... REALLY ANGRY, that's why he created Keeper.
7:32
Lmao, today when I opened Isaac I saw this skin instead of the normal keeper skin and wondered what happend.
Didn't knew that it always activates on April fools.
This video is a keeper
My favorite tainted character is between tainted Jacob or tainted forgotten. They've both got unique game styles that I personally enjoy a lot. Jacob has pretty much a missile for a brother, and forgotten has a bone to pick with anything you can throw it at.
people that serach through data basically ruin the fun of searching for secrets
The community was at most like a day away from figuring out the exact steps for unlocking the lost before the dataminers spoiled it though.
@@explosiveNewt I know that. It's just that the dying for the pieces would've taken a long time since, you know, they're random.
I really loved this lore video, could you make more of these please? I really wonna know about ???, Lilith, Eve, Apollyon and The Forgotten lore.
Also subbed and liked, worth the watch
