      @@QuantumRift its not impossible to do. I'm doing it now installing aftermarket camshafts. Just enough room to get a ratchet wrench in between the front under sway bar and the crankshaft pulley. First you have to move the coolant reservoir and intake box out of the way. 2016 miata

    Great video thanks for posting I have one question I will need to replace exhaust vanos too and I am just wondering if it is keyed or some special tools is needed,

    is it necessary to replace timing chain? i thougth they last a long long time or never need replacement.

      It depends alot on the age, mileage, and treatment of the car. A car driven gently and maintained regularly won't have timing chain problems for +250k miles. A car rode hard and put away wet without proper maintenance might break or stretch a chain past the tensioner's limits at 150k.

    Is that the same for R2AA engine ? 2.2 diesel ? - my Autel tells me that there is missal ligament of 11.1 degrees between camshaft and crankshaft! But car ECU does not warn me of timing chain ! When chain needs to be changed? Thanks

      of course it is.. this one is only dry because it is used for illustration purposes.. it would be messy if it was an actual used engine

    Good to see Mazda went back to a keyed crank. The non-keyed design on the 2.3L motors was so silly and made timing it an absolute pain. If you only had to remove the crank pulley you'd have to retime the engine, which was a major PITA on those engines if you didn't fully understand the process and that's putting it gently.

    why do you align the cam pulleys based on their marks with the engine block when later on, when installing the chain, you change it again based on the marks of the new timing chain ? Because then, the alignment of the marks do not fit with the block any longer (watch 2.55 - 2:58). Looks weird to me and like a useless step that just confuses.

      Probably because of the variable valve timing and cam phasers. The initial alignment helps get the proper sprocket tooth in the proper chain link for each sprocket. If you simply relied on just locking the cams, it would be very easy to get one or more sprocket teeth in the wrong place because of slack in the chain.

      They made a mistake during the installation. @3:08 you can see the timing mark on the intake cam correctly positioned again, they just don't mention it in the video.

      As far as i know there is no change noted in the service plan - should stay on there for the life of the engine.

      If the car owner does change the oil on a regular basis, the cam phaser maybe damaged, or the chain experiences excessive wear then the engine timing will eventually get out of range. The ECU will warn you of this. This is when you will need to change the timing chain. Often, when the phasers may need to get replaced too because it's damaged.

      've heard every 100,000 miles but if you have changed the oil and filter every 6,000 miles and had maintenance on a regular and consistent basis the timing chain should last 200 or 300 thousand miles

    Why not use cam lockers to keep the timing from slipping and just Chang out the chain

    You shouldn't have to replace the timing chain. It is too weak!

      if you dont look after your car then yes this can happen with any car with timing chain

      I think a lot of people would do good to just cut in half the service interval that’s recommended for normal driving but is more like perfect conditions, and regular driving is more like severe service
