- The Wii U has launched a little while ago today, but today also marks the launch of the Nintendo Gamecube, which launched 11 years ago today; hence why I decide to show off the gamecube startup menu and walk you through how it works. Nintendo, since the gamecube, has had a knack of making their menus very simple and intuitive, while still being playful and nintendolike (for lack of a better description). In this case, it uses its namesake quite literally as the bases of navigation with simply the analog stick and A and B buttons for confirmation and cancelling.
That startup tune will forever stay in my memories

Ikr!!! I had a strange glitch I think... Well, actually two... When my blue/purple gamecube couldn't read the disc, it came up to this menu... And once the gamecube wouldn't play ANY game apart from a wrestling game! xD I'm a girl, so that wasn't much fun... LOL!!!

+Tierney Jackson (Miss Boo) It has a little device that controlls the energy of the laser. I don't know much about how machines works, but I know that if you messed up that thing, the laser would either be too slow or too fast, and it would stop reading discs completely.

Man 6th gen consoles always had eerie sounds in their startup screens. Modern consoles seem to have less imagination and just look like internet browsers. At least the PS4 has background music, never played the WiiU
The Wii U background music gives me Gamecube vibes.

I've never played a GameCube.... it's such a strange, unfamiliar thing to me. Wish I'd gotten the chance as a kid. I hear it was a really good console.
+SeaBiscuit The Game Cube have the exact same problem that the Nintendo 64 had. The only games that are really good are from Nintendo, or at least most of them. At least the N64 had Rare.
That said, the controller, while different from any other, is my favorite controller to this date. All the buttons are nice to press and are very well placed. The two analogs had an shape so when you wanted to go straight, left, right, or on diagonal directions, the stick would stuck on that direction. It's also very round (contrary to the console itself) and nice to hold.
The only bad thing I can say about the controller was the D-pad. It's very stiff, but thankfully, most games uses it only for menu or shortcuts, never for movement.
I wish the developers actually developed a new controller for every console, instead of using the old SNES pattern. I know it's a good pattern, but if no one try something different, we will never see another "Game Cube controller".

Take advice from a person who owns a gamecube, it's an awesome console. There is a great library of games to choose from and a gba player for it. I'm not sure how you'd feel about the prices though
When I didn't have games I used just mess with the menus or look at my save files.

The awesomeolly I'm thinking of buying or at least saving until I can think of buying a personal GameCube for a few of the titles, and that's actually a really irrational worry of mine. Maybe it's just looking at how the secret intro sound set for holding Z on a controller freaks me out a little, I don't know why I'm like that at 13 years old though.

I used to think my Xbox 360 or OLD Windows ME computer would turn on by itself.....The monitor made a strange sound when it would turn on and the floppy drive sound used to make be unsettled too

I’m 13. Listening to this makes me want to cry. I played the GameCube ALL THE TIME when I was 3-6, and I can remember me and my brothers and sister playing the GameCube in my brothers room and then listening to this music. And I loved the music back then it was soo peaceful. Every sound effect in the menu I can remember from a long time ago
Edit -- Im 16 now and i might actually be buying a gamecube at one point!! Not sure if im as obsessed with seeing one again as i used to be but its incredibly nice to be able to revisit those memories again.

The Gamecube was my very first video game console, so I know exactly what you mean by the soothing, comforting nostalgia that is the main menu of the little black lunchbox. (My GC was Jet Black)

@@anthonywestover5326 well good for you unlike me my first console was the wii I despise of that boring white slab with its butter shaped controllers and long load times and it’s tv channels menu and it’s motion controls and it’s uninspiring games and the controllers eat through batteries like pac-man and take so long to connect that I could have at least a 2 laps of a double dash track done by the time after the game loads and the controllers are connected it has GameCube support but you have to select the load screen, the wii can go fuck itself ,I envy people like you wishing my first console was the GameCube , at least my dad had ps2 so it wasn’t all that bad then I got a new console a few years later it’s chunky it’s clunky it’s the Wii U oh shit, Scott the woz Outro music starts playing

Fun fact: the music that plays in the GameCube menu is actually the startup sound for the original Famicom Disk System, but slowed down by like, a ton.

I've always felt a sense of relaxation in this menu music and noises. It's just so calm
I remember when I played GameCube as a kid, I would always get scared of the transition sounds/music. It sounds like alien sounds.. Lol

Those people just didn’t like Nintendo and preferred the ps2 I personally would have preferred having the ps2 as well since unlike the GameCube the ps2 could play dvds and was not just a gaming system it also doubled as a cheap low end DVD player which made it very popular at the time since DVD players weren’t as common at the time which made them pretty out of reach of most average consumers at the time
PS2 players missed great GC exclusives, like SSBM and Luigi's Mansion
The GameCube having the "best-titles" is a matter of opinion. The stigma of it being a "kiddie-console" has a lot to do with aesthetics of the console itself and the controller. I mean seriously, a handle? C'mon. The GameCube Controller design worked great for Nintendo 1st-party games, but for 3rd-paries the button-layout feel awkward to put it mildly.
Also terrible-decisions (which ultimately led to it's marketplace failure of only selling 21 million units worldwide) of not including a built-in broadband module or an online-service, the 1.5GB mini-DVD discs forcing developers to have to cut out features to save room, lacking the ability to play media at all.
However, one thing the GameCube did have going for it which was not "kiddie" in the least was it's power. The IBM PowerPC "Gekko" processor was a beast. The "Flipper" GPU designed by ATI was also powerful. It wasn't on-par with the XBOX in terms of sheer horse-power but, it's efficient-design allowed for some developers to make games with visuals on-par with the XBOX or even better. *Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader* has visuals that stand up to this very day.
Both the GameCube and N64 could have been so much more if not for Nintendo's greedy-practices. Had the N64 of been disc-based and if the GameCube used regular-sized DVDs and included broadband-internet capability, the PlayStation brand would have just been a footnote in history. Right along side things like Phillips CD-i or Panasonic 3DO. Today, people would have been like.......

I don't understand how new Nintendo Consoles are more sensitive and the older consoles are stronger. That's one of the reasons why the GameCube is my favorite consoles. It's a very very strong console.

Adam Rodgers it's the way of most things generation after generation in the late 20th century and onwards. Older things were built to last and had authenticity about them. Now it's more about making money and stuff that breaks so you have to buy more.

As much as I hated your start up, you gave me a great selection of games. You got me into Smash Bros, Mega Man, and other games. You were my first console I shared. As much as that startup still haunts me, I'll never forget the sad goodbye when I press start to play a game. While you younger brother was more successful, he was more cheerful and there were no scares. Gamecube, you'll never be forgotten. When I play Mega Man X Collection on my Wii, I'll remember your sweet sweet shape and variety of games. I've known you since I was 3 years old, and you've gotten me this far into the gamer life....
Goodbye. You'll never be forgotten by me, your friends, your siblings, and nintendo..

This made me wanna cry seeing all those game saves and remembering all the fun I had watching my dad and later trying them myself. It took me more than 10yrs to beat Super Mario Sunshine and it turns out that all along I had only needed one final shinesprite to beat the game. Thank you
Why was this the only Nintendo console released in America that had a startup/bios animation as good as this one? The Wii U just says "Wii U", while the Wii just has some channel placeholders fade in and out.

Why does this sound so nostalgic? I never owned a GameCube. I was born in 2004 and the Wii was right around the corner so I got a Wii for my birthday in 2011. I still own that Wii today. :)

U can buy GameCube games for ur Wii to play backwards compatibility. But u need to get a GameCube controller and memory card to get fully started.
@@crimsonnotion yes I know that, I in fact own 2 physical GCN games. Those being Mario Kart Double Dash and Super Mario Sunshine. I also have the memory card and 4 GCN controllers.

The grainy sound in the background just makes this so much better. I didn’t grow up with a gamecube but I did play it a few times when I was younger and this definitely is what I remember the most of it.

I find it strange that many found this unnerving/alien, to me as a kid it gave me the most soothing beautiful feeling. This console is my childhood, through and through. Not Nintendos best, but i love it so dearly.

It seems the 6th generation of consoles were really the last consoles to have some sort of charm to them.
After this gen when SEGA dropped out of the console race, I guess less risks were taken in console design due to less competition

Seeing as the gamecube BIOS was programed to auto load into a game on boot, this means that this was done on actual hardware because dolphin requires a game to be inserted to start
No joke, this menu scared the shit out of me when I was a little kid. I remember I was always scared of turning my GameCube on, so I would make my dad turn it on for me just in case it wouldn't read the disc for whatever reason. Needless to say, I was a weird kid lol.

wow nice. man i feel old. im 35 years old today. i was 14 years old when i buyed the nintendo gamecube. it was best days of my life. i did not get it day 1. i got the gamecube a year later in 2002. it was the best day of my life. buyed the black nintendo gamecube and 2 controllers and 2 games. lugi mansion and super smash bros melee. and was super happy when i got home to play. and manu seeing this manu today on youtube just bring me back to thos good days.
Since the gamecube was the first system OF MY LIFE at 5 yrs old, I wasn't scared but amazed. I loved the box on the menu and my child like mind thought it was cute.
