Kein Name i'm very amused because the fact that you find it funny when non-germans pronounce schadenfreude kinda wrong is actually an act of shahdenfroyduh itself... mind=blown (but i get what you feel cause im brazilian and when americans try to speak portuguese it's pretty hilarious too)
I live in Germany and I've been watching your videos for quite long now... It was kind-of strange to read a German word in your title, especially because "Schadenfreude" is used quite frequently in our everyday language- or at least in mine xD It's interesting to see that the English language just took this word from German... Your video is (of course) awesome, just as I expected- how couldn't it be great!? :P Oh, one thing I wanted to mention: Your pronunciation of "Schadenfreude" is surprisingly good! Many Americans struggle to pronounce the "sch" sound, but not having German as Native language, that seems to be quite hard... However, you did it fine! ;)
+Koyun Productions Your pronunciation seems to be quite right; for most Americans, the "r" is the most difficult sound in this case as it is pronounced different to every English pronunciation you might know, so it's hard to explain :( The best way would be to just look the word up in an online dictionary (i prefer leo.org) and listening to the audio pronunciation ;)
JoSel 01 English has Halt, kaput, fest, Doppelgänger, Kindergarten, iceberg, angst, uber and many more. Schadenfreude doesn't exist in English, so it's easier to just take it straight from German. Yes?
Saskia H. I just got news yesterday that I have received an admission from a German public university. So I am coming to Germany. And you are the first German person to know about it. Please feel special.
The other major drug in politics right now is tribalism; there are a few studies on this that could be brought together into a great video! In fact, an entire video focused on tribalism and nationalism could be very informative!
Max morter I always felt like loving your country is a weird thing to do. I don't understand why nationalists get so attached to the way their country is 'supposed to be'
At least you spelled it right. Look at me. Can't change it now. Well, I misspelled it for a reason, but now I don't think it was that great of an idea.
the quality of your videos always blows me away; from your graphics, to your music, to just the information you deliver. I feel enlightened and entertained. Well done, Nerdwriter1. I fuckin love you.
Huh. My mom always hated slapstick, so I've always really hated watching people get hurt or fail. I'll sometimes even skip parts of movies where someone gets "comically" rejected by a love interest because it makes me cringe. :-/ Really great point about feeling self-satisfied by opponent groups screwing up.
origami_unicorn in my personal opinion cringe is more like you can't stand a thing and it's uncomfortable. you're not necessarily embarrassed? but maybe I've just got the wrong idea. :D
Cringe is more general (you can cringe at something you yourself have done). The "fremd" part in _fremdschämen_ (fremd = "foreign", or in this case "exterior") implies that you cringe at somebody else's actions.
Brian McInnis Not everyone gets schadenfreude from the same thing. I agree with you- but if the girl was acting rude/cocky beforehand I would also find it amusing.
Roland Deschain it's strange for me too because a word with exactly the same meaning exists in swedish but everybody says only germans can express that feeling in their language
As a German it's strange to see someone explain a word that you are used to and use every day as if it is a technical term or something, but good video nonetheless :)
Loan words are a thing in English because we just seem to love words. There's words from all over in English, like words from the Vikings, and the Romans, and so on and so on.
Actually in English there are more than double the words than in German. It's just that there are more words for (more or less) similar things where as in German there's only one and often a combined word for certain things.
Nothing Notable German audience is not big enough to make a difference, IMHO. The people who say they love Germany however is growing with every day Trump is in office and the UK is drowning in its Brexit shitstorm.
Actually, there is one thing.. A belief that the universe of politics doesn't have to be poisonous. Without that belief then it really is all poisonous. We do have some agency to make changes for the better.
The US Shameless is really fantastic, one of the few UK-US remakes that is better than the original. Also thanks for the criticism. I actually really appreciate it.
Hey Evan, I'm so glad you did this video. It's something that has been bothering me (as an outside, non-US observer) for quite a while. You mention the toxicity of Schadenfreude, but seem to focus mostly on the time during the election. What worries me these days is its continued influence on the ever-growing division in the American society. Whether Schadenfreude is explicit (as in late night TV), or implicit (as in progressive UA-cam news channels), and even in the absence of derogatory language, it has a persistently condescending undertone towards the people who still support Trump. That tone seems to suggest questions like "how can you still support this guy?", "why won't you change your mind?", "how stupid do you have to be?", "what does it take before you finally see through the charade?". All this does is strengthen Trump's supporters' defence mechanisms, leading to a more and more isolated, radical core in society with "nothing left to loose". I think that's an extremely dangerous situation and it's time that a part of the media (or the public in general) starts to reach out to these people with an understanding, empathetic attitude and truly listen and speak to them without the slightest intent to ridicule or expose them. Otherwise they might soon turn in to the mass-equivalent of the bullied loner at school who one day decides to take some devastating action...
UA-cam recommended me one of your videos today and I just had to stay and subscribe! Now I am spending most of today's afternoon just listening to what you have to say about movies and life. Great observations, research and conclusions. I am amazed by how you make your videos! A+ work. I feel sooooooo inspired right now, thanks :D
Nerdwriter you are at the top of your game. I really enjoyed this video. I can say easily that your style and thought over the last year + have made me believe in UA-cam as the most interesting current medium for new content producers. Good job.
germans wouldn´t pronounce it exactly like nerdwirter did. what he said sounds to me like something i would try to spell like "schaad´n´froyde" . (which is no german) the a is a bit shorter for a german speaker, the n really sounds like it comes directly after the d, (in many german words those "e"s become silent when speaking. to really pronounce the e would almost sound strange) it sounds like nerdwriter makes a tiny/small pause between "schaden" and "freude", which sounds a bit strange. his "reu" tends to sound a little bit different, which is common among non-native speakers, i guess. we germans do not make every r into the pronounced pirate-arrr, like it sometimes tends to sound when english-speakers say it.
I thought losing the Deutsche rolling r-r-r-r was a reaction to the Marshall Plan, like the spreading popularity of the descriptor Central European. Nationalism became very modest. The rolling r-r-r-r was a sound Americans associated with the speech-maker from Linz. Nerdwriter is almost saying "fweude," like friends I recall from Abensberg.
all of them milking with green fleshy flowers Wenn du mal einen Heine ließt dann liebst du Deutsch auch. Ein weiteres wunderbares Wort ist z.b. Fernweh.
+ all of them milking with green flashy flowers + Neymow "Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters." Just my two cents. I wish a great day to both of you! :)
It's been a while since I've watched one of your videos and I just want to say you have gotten REALLY GOOD. In terms of production quality, this is one of the best videos I've ever seen.
I have to respectfully disagree a bit. I have always felt that true schadenfreude comes as an almost act of deep empathetic connection. It is the doorway into feeling connected to someone because we have all failed. Much of media is focused on flawed perfection...perfectly lit perfect looking actors on a perfectly designed set to create false drama. The world is belittling. So anything that reminds us that we are not alone in our awkwardness is funny out of direct empathy. We identify with and immediately feel an observers sense of relief and nostalgia, in that moment.
I think it's possible that your theory fails to explain the pleasure some people get from live executions/hangings/etc. That's caused more by the complete lack of empathy.
I think there are degrees. When looking at the clips, I giggled at the ones where no one got hurt, or a least hurt badly - stuff I'd laugh at myself about. I cringed at the clips where there had to have been a visit to the ER. I used the term today to describe how I am feeling at the arrest of Roger Stone. I, in no means, want to see anyone hang. I don't think that's schadenfreude - that's sadism.
They might have gotten the pronunciation right but not the meaning. In order for it to be Schadenfreude the joy has to come from real suffering or harm. For example, if someone falls and there is no serious injury and you laugh that is not Schadenfreude. However, if that person fall causes them serious injury and you laugh at that, then that is indeed Schadenfreude. Watching something like Jackass and laughing at it is not Schadenfreude. Laughing about about the cast member who died in a car accident and finding joy in that would be Schadenfreude.
Another week, another amazing and insightful Nerdwriter video. Hands down the most interesting channel on UA-cam. Also I'd love to see a Nerdwriter+MatPat team up video. Not sure why, I just feel like it would be perfect.
Before the US election, someone I knew unfriended me because I didn't hate Trump to the degree that they did. Their hate was red hot. And I saw the whole election as predictable in the sense that each side was digging up and then presenting more and more dirt on each other. What else is new? First off, we live in Canada. What can we do? Am I supposed to stew in my own juices like the person who unfriended me? What good will that do? All you can do is watch the train wreck in slow motion.
This has aways confused me.... Never in my 37 years on this planet have I ever experienced any degree of joy, satisfaction or amusement when watching someone have an accident, fail or come up short. I can't even take part in 1 on 1 competition because I can't stand being on the winning side because by doing so I have caused someone else to lose.
This is the most satisfying video I've ever watched because it puts into words so many thought I've had recently. And by recently I mean during Trump's entire campaign and presidency. Every time Trump made a 'blunder' it would get worldwide attention and it would frustrate me so much and it took me a while to figure out why. Even if a news station was outright left, by reporting on him they were still feeding the fire, giving him more power by just mentioning his name. It started to make me think that maybe each 'slip up' he made wasn't so accidental. I would never bring this up in conversation though, number 1 because it makes me sound like a deluded conspiracy theorist but also because it's kinda hard just to blurt out 'hey let's stop talking about trump' when no one on either side wants to do that. Whether he succeeds or fails, it's all news because someone wants to hear about it. I would really love it if politics news was a relevant, serious discussion about global issues that affected real day-to-day people not just a constant 'what the fuck has he done this time.'
There is a larger example Schadenfreude & that is many times you will feel that this man/woman isn't working very hard on something & still getting a better off revenue it can be the scene of your job of any youtube roasting channel. One thing we must learn is that Schadenfreude either works if you are a subject for a mass & to be honest it creates a lot of negativity as you just know how not to work & get the revenue or just roast some other people etc. Which is good sometimes but should not be encouraged. HOW it can end? It can end 1. by understanding & awaring about Schadenfreude. 2. If all people get employed or just do the job they love. Then people won't have time to encourage the people who are just assholes & misleading. They will see the work & make a better society. 3. Taking it as serious as a disease. Bcoz if politics get bad leaders. There will be a WW3. Would you like that ? Thankyou guys for reading, I make breakdowns. Have a nice day :)
I bat it's an experiment for his next video. Focusing on how many commenters would go off topic on a pointless issue rather than discuss the topic at hand. Close?
Totalart This is actually my favourite you tube channel. He'd have to be pretty insecure to be offended by a simple suggestion. It wasn't mean spirited - maybe he would prefer to re-upload the episode with the spelling.
I really enjoyed your video because I think you expressed a new and good thought about an area (current politics/society) in which it's been starting to feel like everything had already been said.
I think it's always strange (but more like 'komisch') & interresting to see foreign words in a languange, this is not just applying to english. Maybe funny is not the exact translation of komisch, idk
Honestly, I don't see the link between Trump and the concept of "Schadenfreude". People simply tuned in to see him during the primary because it was entertaining to see him make a mockery of a thoroughly corrupted political process and to contrast him against robotic, bought-off traditional Republic Party candidates like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, ripping them apart. Republican voters liked him as an underdog and saw him as a "straight shooter", even though he's constantly lying his ass off and flipping back and forth on every issue. Democrats liked seeing the Republican Party get torn to shreds because they're so off-the-wall crazy these days and pushing for disastrous policy for anyone but the super rich. So no, I don't think anybody on the left believes they're "genuinely trying to help" the American people. And now, of course, he's president, so it's impossible to look away. Calling out his blunders is not "Schadenfreude", it's simply necessary to keep pointing out that a 70 year old man-baby is now leader of the free world.
Sir Psycho Sexy And now that Jeroboam was so successful at ripping apart both republican and democrat politicians, all of whom are corn fed with guile, the entire nation will soon be ripped apart by the very people who created SCHADENFREUDE; the Germans. How fitting!!! Our Satanic, brain dead politicians will crawl to their lover Germany in their day of trouble. But Germany will cut their heads off and may even stack em like pyramids as they did back in the days of the Assyrians, the true name of the Germans. The only nation to have ever submitted to God's rule after Jonah finally got the courage from God to speak to the King of Assyria at Nineveh. Although man's submission to God was short lived, much the same as Israel's was. Mankind truly has a stubborn side when it comes to living God's way of life. MANKIND IS SO FULL OF HIMSELF, MAN WOULD RATHER DESTROY THIS EARTH AND ALL LIFE ON IT RATHER THAN REPENT AS THE HARDENED KING OF ASSYRIA DID. MAN HAS HAD HIS CHANCE AT CREATING A LASTING GOVERNMENT AND FAILED EVERY TIME. GERMANY WILL CREATE A TEN NATION COMBINE THAT WILL LEAD THE WORLD INTO WORLD WAR III. NUCLEAR WAR WILL KILL BILLIONS AND A 200 MILLION MAN EASTERN ARMY WILL TAKE THE WIND FROM GERMANY'S SAIL. THOSE TWO ARMIES WILL MEET EACH OTHER AT ARMAGEDDON BUT SATAN WILL CONVINCE THEM TO UNITE AND HEAD SOUTH TO JERUSALEM. SATAN CONVINCES THE DECEIVED THAT CHRIST IS THE ANTI CHRIST AND THE ARMIES OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD ATTACK CHRIST AND HIS BRIDE AT JERUSALEM. THE ARMIES OF THE WORLD DIE IN THE VALLEY OF JEHOSOPHAT. CHRIST BREAKS IN PIECES THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD AND CAST SATAN AND HIS DEMONS INTO OUTER DARKNESS. ONLY THEN WILL THERE BE LOVE, PEACE, AND HARMONY UNDER GOD'S GOVERNMENT AND MANKIND WILL BE FREE AT LAST TO LIVE GOD'S WAY OF LIFE. ALL MANKIND WHO HAS EVER LIVED WILL BE RESURRECTED AT THE END OF THE THOUSAND YEAR MILLENNIUM. THOSE WHO MOCKED, RIDUCLED, LAUGHED AT, AND TREATED WITH CONTEMPT GOD'S TRUE WAY OF LIFE WILL BE RESURRECTED TO THEIR SHAME AND DISGRACE AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD ALLOWED TO LIVE GOD'S WAY OF LIFE. LIVE IN HIS LAW ACCORDING TO GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION AND GROWING IN GOD'S SPIRIT, OBSERVING GOD'S FESTIVALS , LIVING IN THE SPIRIT AND BY THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST. THIS TAKES PLACE IN THE GREAT FALL HARVEST OF THE SECOND RESURRECTION AND THESE MORTAL FLESH AND BLOOD WILL HAVE A HUNDRED YEARS TO REACH SPIRITUAL MATURITY AND BE TRANSCENDED FROM PHYSICAL TO SPIRIT BEINGS IN ORDER TO BE BORN INTO GOD'S SPIRITUAL KINGDOM OR FAMILY. A FAMILY OF GOD CONSISTING OF BILLIONS OF FAMILY MEMBERS, WHO ARE GOD BEINGS AND WHO SHINE AS BRIGHT AS THE STARS AND NEVER SIN AGAIN. THESE CHILDREN MAKE UP THE ENTIRE FAMILY OF THE FATHER, WHO IS THE HIGHEST, MOST POWERFUL AND GLORIOUS, FOLLOWED BY HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST WHO SACRIFICED HIS LIFE IN ORDER TO GIVE MORTAL MAN ANOTHER CHANCE AND WHO IS ALSO THE HUSBAND OF HIS BRIDE, THE FIRST FRUITS OF THE SPRING HARVEST, THE FIRST RESURRECTION AND THE MILLIONS WHO WERE BORN DURING THE THOUSAND YEAR MILLENNIUM WHO GREW UP IN GOD'S GOVERNMENT IN A GARDEN OF EDEN WHERE THERE WAS NO FEAR OF ANYTHING. ALL THOSE WHO HAVE EVER LIVED WHO LIVED GOD'S WAY OF LIFE, LIVING BY HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS, LIVING IN THE SPIRIT AND BY THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST WHILE SATAN WAS STILL SITTING ON THE THRONE OF THIS EARTH; WHO BECAME THE BRIDE OF CHRIST AND ARE NOW SPIRIT BEINGS WILL ADMINISTER THE OFFICES OF GOVERNMENT, RELIGION, SCIENCE, THE ECONOMY, AND EDUCATION UNDER THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, JESUS CHRIST. ALL THE INSTITUTIONS THAT MANKIND WAS INCAPABLE OF RUNNING BECAUSE MAN ON HIS OWN FREE WILL CHOSE THE TREE OF GOOD AND EVIL. MANKIND WANTED THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AND THAT LIFESTYLE WAS PROMOTED BY SATAN, THE god OF THIS WORLD. AND SATAN HAS DECEIVED THE WHOLE WORLD. ...THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH ARE OUT OF COURSE... PSALM 82. JESUS CHRIST AND HIS BRIDE WILL DO WHAT MANKIND COULD NEVER DO. PUT THE FOUNDATIONS OF THIS EARTH BACK ON COURSE. ONLY LIVING BY GOD'S TREE OF LIFE WILL A UTOPIA EVER BE ACHIEVED. ONLY BY MANKIND UNITING HIS HUMAN SPIRIT WITH GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT, BY LIVING GOD'S WAY OF LIFE, WILL MANKIND EVER RETURN TO LIVING BY GOD'S TEN COMMANDMENTS. IN THIS WORLD, MANKIND CHOOSES TO LIVE SATAN'S WAY OF GET, INSTANT GRATIFICATION, A LIFE OF SELF PLEASURE FOR SATAN HAS BLINDED MANKIND AS TO WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE NO OTHER gods BEFORE ME. MANKIND HAS BEEN GIVEN FREE MORAL AGENCY. MAN HAS FREE WILL TO DO AS HE PLEASES. MANKIND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BLAME ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES IN THEIR DAY OF TROUBLE. GOD HAS RAISED UP TWO WITNESSES IN THESE LAST DAYS. BUT JUST AS IN THE CASE OF ALL OF GOD'S PROPHETS THROUGHOUT MAN'S HISTORY, GOD'S PROPHETS WERE IGNORED, SCOFFED AT, AND TREATED WITH CONTEMPT. SATAN'S LIES AND DECEPTION IS WHY MAN LIVES IN DARKNESS. IT IS ALSO WHY MAN WILL NEVER GET RID OF HIS PUFFED UP PRIDEFULNESS AND ARROGANCE UNTIL SATAN IS REMOVED. ONLY THEN WILL MAN BECOME HUMBLE AS A SMALL CHILD TO LEARN THE WAYS OF HIS HEAVENLY FATHER. WHETHER YOU LIKE HIM OR HATE HIM, GOD ALMIGHTY WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY AND YOU WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT HIS JUDGMENT.
But I'm serious, whether or not you like him, isn't it possible that he took advantage of the media for the attention, remember all publicity is good publicity. I am just wondering whether it was on purpose or by accident.
yeah no shit man after going through all of his clips from the 80s till date I kinds came to the conclusion that he's a lot smarter than the people who support him. hes manipulate and has his own agenda but hey that's every damn business man out there. he contradicts almost everything he says nowadays with what he used to say, when he realized that being blunt, immature and opposing normal behavior of politicians worked for him surprisingly well his attitude did a 180.

OH LOOK, another amazing Nerdwriter video. Well done, these always make me think and stick in my mind for the rest of the week. Thank you for making amazing content.
Timely! I've been overly concerned with schadenfreude and one of my children. I'm regularly asking her to keep it in check. Thank you for your smart work.
this video is great, because it feels like one of Nerdwriter1's older vids. It doesn't bombard the viewer with five dollar words, but the video essay still remains thoughtful and effective.
The color comp background and the use of that font remind me of those Seek Truth Initiative Ads against tobacco products that scared me as a kid. Way to give me Nam flashbacks.
Labour MP, Diane Abbot became the cause of many cases of Schadenfreude here in the UK recently. During the election her mistakes during press interviews lead to ridicule by other party leaders and supporters costing the Labour party many votes. Although Schadenfreude was very apparent in late American politics, it's clear it's in other nation's politics just as much. Another great video, Evan!
Hey bro. Never had the chance to comment on a fresh vid. But you are awesomely good, have been following you from bit before the massive success wave and glad for you and to know that doing good things right gets you there. All the best.
I first saw that this video came out right after I heard about the congressional baseball shooting, and I initially thought that this video was about that! I have certainly seen a bunch of schadenfreude take place online around that incident.

As a German, this title really caught me offguard. But it is a very good theme for a video of yours!
Moscape same here
Same. Schadenfreude, Kindergarten and Angst. Three typical german words everyone knows ... :)

I love these vids for that very reason.

Got a tasty bit of schadenfreude when I noticed the spelling mistake at 3:33
💀💀💀 that happens in #BoyErased too..
A new Nerdwriter video and it sounds great!!
Greetings from Germany. I am so addicted to your videos!
Lol you could post that comment automatically on all his new videos. EVERY Nerdwriter video sounds great with that silky smooth voice of his :P
Saskia H. I just got news yesterday that I have received an admission from a German public university. So I am coming to Germany. And you are the first German person to know about it.
Please feel special.
What do you think of his pronunciation of Schadenfreude?
its as good as it gets for a non native.

I just found a cool Schadenfreude-themed android game. It's called PooBardment. You play as a pigeon and poop on people. Brilliant :D
Females don't experience it in research. When they do it is in low amounts.
Trump is also a prime example for another german word: "Fremdschämen"
Which means to be embarrassed on behalf of someone else.
Mark Christian Swain "cringe"?
origami_unicorn in my personal opinion cringe is more like you can't stand a thing and it's uncomfortable. you're not necessarily embarrassed? but maybe I've just got the wrong idea. :D
Cringe is more general (you can cringe at something you yourself have done). The "fremd" part in _fremdschämen_ (fremd = "foreign", or in this case "exterior") implies that you cringe at somebody else's actions.
I think Backpfeifengesicht is another german word that applies to Trump. It means a face that's begging to be slapped.
Dam i need to learn german
"Basking in Blunders" would be a great name for an album.
Dude, we're not feelin' schadenfreude watchin' that girl hit the water; we're cringing sympathetically.
Brian McInnis Not everyone gets schadenfreude from the same thing. I agree with you- but if the girl was acting rude/cocky beforehand I would also find it amusing.
+chatboss000 I personally wouldn't find it amusing either way. Again, we get it from different things.
I enjoy the verbal pacing of your speech. Coupled w/ your pleasant voice, your videos are pleasant to our ears. Great job
What a fantastically powerful message build up to, and end on. Nicely done.
What an excellent video! Thank you for making us more mindful, Evan.
Oh boy I can already see the "as a German I find this very funny xD" comments
haHAA Clap how unpredictable
german here and the comments annoy me already
Roland Deschain it's strange for me too because a word with exactly the same meaning exists in swedish but everybody says only germans can express that feeling in their language
Don't judge me.
as a Funny I find this very german xD
Scadenfreue is the combination of the words Schaden (damage) and Freude (joy).
"Who knows? He may deserve it."
2 years later, your comment is an understatement

Great idea behind this. I think it's a bit more nuanced, but also true, and now I will remember to keep that in check. Very much enjoyed this.
As a German it's strange to see someone explain a word that you are used to and use every day as if it is a technical term or something, but good video nonetheless :)
I always find it strange how English just borrows the words they are missing straight from other languages.
How is it strange? It's the simplest language with the smallest vocabulary!
Loan words are a thing in English because we just seem to love words. There's words from all over in English, like words from the Vikings, and the Romans, and so on and so on.
German has loanwords from over 35 other languages too
Actually in English there are more than double the words than in German. It's just that there are more words for (more or less) similar things where as in German there's only one and often a combined word for certain things.
Nerdwriter is out here trying to gain that German audience
Nothing Notable German audience is not big enough to make a difference, IMHO.
The people who say they love Germany however is growing with every day Trump is in office and the UK is drowning in its Brexit shitstorm.
contentedbuddha you know that there are more than 80 Mio Germans?
Yannick sind aber leider nur 10% :(
He already got me before this video.
To be fair, Germans very rarely use the word Schadenfreude anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out English speakers use it more often.
Is there anything that doesn't become poisonous in the universe of politics lol?
They've taken our Schadenfreude.
Rossy
Theoretical question, if cyanide runs for office, does it get cancelled out by the political poison and become a miracle cure?
Actually, there is one thing.. A belief that the universe of politics doesn't have to be poisonous. Without that belief then it really is all poisonous. We do have some agency to make changes for the better.
This is brilliant. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to describe this for some time, but you have nailed it. Thanks!
The way you are able to articulate information in your videos is beyond incredible!
'Leedvermaak' it is called in Dutch.
"Vahingonilo" in Finnish.
kahjurõõm in Estonian
skadefryd in Noregian
Skadeglädje in swedish
Damn English, get busy inventing a word!
Oh look who's back. I had to start making my own video essays while you were gone.
Shameless... and your narrating style is impressively unpleasant.
Before The Credits I think your videos are great. keep it up. we all have to start from somewhere.
The US Shameless is really fantastic, one of the few UK-US remakes that is better than the original. Also thanks for the criticism. I actually really appreciate it.
You sound like you have emphysema.
Learn to enunciate as well as Nerdwriter does. Sounds like you're having soup.
i rearly feel schadenfreude: I feel so sorry when people fail
and I feel sick when Trump speaks
I had a growing suspicion of something like this but thanks for putting this into words clearly.
pls do a video on eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

UA-cam recommended me one of your videos today and I just had to stay and subscribe! Now I am spending most of today's afternoon just listening to what you have to say about movies and life. Great observations, research and conclusions. I am amazed by how you make your videos! A+ work. I feel sooooooo inspired right now, thanks :D
Nerdwriter you are at the top of your game. I really enjoyed this video. I can say easily that your style and thought over the last year + have made me believe in UA-cam as the most interesting current medium for new content producers. Good job.
I'm 2 minutes into this video.
And already I never want to hear the word shadenfreude ever again.
Scott K shjadenfrode 😂
germans wouldn´t pronounce it exactly like nerdwirter did.
what he said sounds to me like something i would try to spell like "schaad´n´froyde" . (which is no german)
the a is a bit shorter for a german speaker,
the n really sounds like it comes directly after the d, (in many german words those "e"s become silent when speaking. to really pronounce the e would almost sound strange)
it sounds like nerdwriter makes a tiny/small pause between "schaden" and "freude", which sounds a bit strange.
his "reu" tends to sound a little bit different, which is common among non-native speakers, i guess. we germans do not make every r into the pronounced pirate-arrr, like it sometimes tends to sound when english-speakers say it.
Shadenfreude
fukuuu that's Scott, he's a dick.
I love German. Such a beautiful language.
Schön ist vielleicht das falsche Wort. Aber wir haben sicherlich eine besondere, nuancierte, genaue Sprache.
all of them milking with green fleshy flowers Wenn du mal einen Heine ließt dann liebst du Deutsch auch. Ein weiteres wunderbares Wort ist z.b. Fernweh.

Just my two cents.
I wish a great day to both of you! :)

It's been a while since I've watched one of your videos and I just want to say you have gotten REALLY GOOD. In terms of production quality, this is one of the best videos I've ever seen.
Your videos are so well made, so interesting, I genuinely felt moved by the end of this one.
stay strong murica!👊
Spot on pronunciation of SCHADENFREUDE! Well done.
Vincent Knight kinda weird at the end, but other than that it was good. U is prononced ou.
@@12012channel Incorrect. The joy of schadenfreude comes from observing misfortune, not necessarily harm.
Another week, another amazing and insightful Nerdwriter video. Hands down the most interesting channel on UA-cam. Also I'd love to see a Nerdwriter+MatPat team up video. Not sure why, I just feel like it would be perfect.

Probably because google exists, not really a huge accomplishment

This aged well...... corona trump
Thank you for your carefully considered thoughts and their Expression! This is something to keep in mind, daily.

AuroraS 92 good luck LOL
I would really love it if politics news was a relevant, serious discussion about global issues that affected real day-to-day people not just a constant 'what the fuck has he done this time.'
always deep, always on point, never dull, or easy. thanks man.

INCREDIBLE video!! I love connection pop-culture to politics and you do it so well!!
Dude your attention to detail in video editing is phenomenal.
I really wish that one day this will be taught from infancy to all the children in the world
I wish I had more likes to give to this video.
I really enjoyed your video because I think you expressed a new and good thought about an area (current politics/society) in which it's been starting to feel like everything had already been said.
Once again, you hit it out of the park. Nicely done!
As a german, it's always very funny to see german words in the english language :D
but why is it funny? wir benutzen im deutschen viel mehr englische wörter - und da ist ja auch kein witz dabei
Right. Schadenfreude.
You just described Schadenfreude "seeing the Republican Party get torn to shreds"
The left (in the US) and the Dems sleep and shit in the same bed.

Best Nerdwriter video in a long while. Love it! 💜
Perhaps Donald Trump took advantage of the Schadenfreude on purpose?
He's a narcissist. He naturally takes delight in the pain of others while looking good as he does it to fill up his ego bar.
But I'm serious, whether or not you like him, isn't it possible that he took advantage of the media for the attention, remember all publicity is good publicity.
I am just wondering whether it was on purpose or by accident.

after going through all of his clips from the 80s till date I kinds came to the conclusion that he's a lot smarter than the people who support him. hes manipulate and has his own agenda but hey that's every damn business man out there.
he contradicts almost everything he says nowadays with what he used to say, when he realized that being blunt, immature and opposing normal behavior of politicians worked for him surprisingly well his attitude did a 180.

I've learnt about Schadenfreude in my media studies class at school. This video makes me feel like you're my teacher!
I can not watch other people getting hurt, I feel anxious and sick when I see things like that.
I sent this video to my psychology professor and he loved it!

This changed my life. Thank you.
Timely! I've been overly concerned with schadenfreude and one of my children. I'm regularly asking her to keep it in check. Thank you for your smart work.
Your final point is very well made.

this video is great, because it feels like one of Nerdwriter1's older vids.
Congrats on being on trending!

Hey bro. Never had the chance to comment on a fresh vid. But you are awesomely good, have been following you from bit before the massive success wave and glad for you and to know that doing good things right gets you there. All the best.
I'm a huge fan of your videos! Such quality content! Thanks for that!
Thank you Simon Miller
Thanks for this video, schadenfreude has been on my mind a lot lately too.
That ending clip was very appropriate.
We're collectively enjoying the misfortune of others, until it hits us in the face.
I first saw that this video came out right after I heard about the congressional baseball shooting, and I initially thought that this video was about that! I have certainly seen a bunch of schadenfreude take place online around that incident.
This was really well thought out. Thank you for your analysis.
I always feel smarter after watching your videos - thanks for your awesome insights! I look forward to them every week :)
