    It bothers me when people say "your side lost, get over it" because it makes the running of a country out to be like a game of soccer. I think that schadenfreude contributes to this idea that your ideology puts you on a team that can win or lose. It blurs people's perception of reality in favour of being loyal to their team.

    • @srazzz
      @srazzz 7 років тому +17

      Yup. Anyone who says that should be called on it. It's utterly meaningless but designed to shut down discussion and make out genuine critique as 'just another bitter leftie' or some other ad hominem.

      I think people say it because at this point, there's nothing you can really do about it. Standing outside protesting something that isn't going to change is pointless. Saying "Not my president" is rather embarrassing when you could actually be coming up with decent critiques against him. And impeaching him just leaves us with someone potentially worse, so complaining about it does no one any good. But phrased in that particular way, you are right, it is rather ridiculous.

      It's also highly hypocritical comes from Republicans since they hung effigies of Obama and such. They couldn't take their own advice when the shoe was on the other foot, so it sounds hollow and arrogant to tell Democrats to just "accept it" that Trump won.

    Lovely analysis. I really appreciate how this is both original and placing the analysis on the right level, while remaining unbiased throughout. Having been both in journalism and politics, I am dumbfounded how mistaken outsiders think that the people inside are free to do what they want. While from the inside, what I saw both in politics and journalism, was people who were largely driven by what captures peoples attention. And this analysis looks at that side of the equation.
    Great job!

    I live in Germany and I've been watching your videos for quite long now... It was kind-of strange to read a German word in your title, especially because "Schadenfreude" is used quite frequently in our everyday language- or at least in mine xD It's interesting to see that the English language just took this word from German... Your video is (of course) awesome, just as I expected- how couldn't it be great!? :P
    Oh, one thing I wanted to mention: Your pronunciation of "Schadenfreude" is surprisingly good! Many Americans struggle to pronounce the "sch" sound, but not having German as Native language, that seems to be quite hard... However, you did it fine! ;)

      +Koyun Productions Your pronunciation seems to be quite right; for most Americans, the "r" is the most difficult sound in this case as it is pronounced different to every English pronunciation you might know, so it's hard to explain :( The best way would be to just look the word up in an online dictionary (i prefer leo.org) and listening to the audio pronunciation ;)

  • @johnredberg
    @johnredberg 7 років тому +1

    Hey Evan, I'm so glad you did this video. It's something that has been bothering me (as an outside, non-US observer) for quite a while. You mention the toxicity of Schadenfreude, but seem to focus mostly on the time during the election.
    What worries me these days is its continued influence on the ever-growing division in the American society. Whether Schadenfreude is explicit (as in late night TV), or implicit (as in progressive UA-cam news channels), and even in the absence of derogatory language, it has a persistently condescending undertone towards the people who still support Trump.
    That tone seems to suggest questions like "how can you still support this guy?", "why won't you change your mind?", "how stupid do you have to be?", "what does it take before you finally see through the charade?". All this does is strengthen Trump's supporters' defence mechanisms, leading to a more and more isolated, radical core in society with "nothing left to loose".
    I think that's an extremely dangerous situation and it's time that a part of the media (or the public in general) starts to reach out to these people with an understanding, empathetic attitude and truly listen and speak to them without the slightest intent to ridicule or expose them. Otherwise they might soon turn in to the mass-equivalent of the bullied loner at school who one day decides to take some devastating action...

      germans wouldn´t pronounce it exactly like nerdwirter did.
      what he said sounds to me like something i would try to spell like "schaad´n´froyde" . (which is no german)
      the a is a bit shorter for a german speaker,
      the n really sounds like it comes directly after the d, (in many german words those "e"s become silent when speaking. to really pronounce the e would almost sound strange)
      it sounds like nerdwriter makes a tiny/small pause between "schaden" and "freude", which sounds a bit strange.
      his "reu" tends to sound a little bit different, which is common among non-native speakers, i guess. we germans do not make every r into the pronounced pirate-arrr, like it sometimes tends to sound when english-speakers say it.

    • @grayforester
      @grayforester 7 років тому

      I thought losing the Deutsche rolling r-r-r-r was a reaction to the Marshall Plan, like the spreading popularity of the descriptor Central European. Nationalism became very modest. The rolling r-r-r-r was a sound Americans associated with the speech-maker from Linz. Nerdwriter is almost saying "fweude," like friends I recall from Abensberg.

      Heine mochte ich nie. Sicherlich sind Nietzsche, Rilke, Hesse, etc. sprachgewaltig und reizen das Potential der Sprache aus. Schön finde ich die Sprache dennoch nur bedingt. Sie ist sehr präzise und expressiv, aber deshalb nicht schön. Ich finde Weltschmerz, Fremdscham - so viel besser als cringe - und Eifersucht schöne Wörter. Der Klang ist doch für nicht Deutsche auch eher hart, karg und aggressiv oder nicht?!

      Manche Leute behaupten Französisch sei eine schöne Sprache. Für mich klingt sie arrogant, genervt und abgehetzt. Als hätten Franzosen weder Zeit, noch Lust sich zu unterhalten. :/ Aber so ist das eben mit der subjektiven Wahrnehmung. ^^
      Meiner Meinung nach lässt sich Schönheit nicht objektiv und allgemein gültig festlegen, da der Begriff eben subjektiv ist und selbst, wenn man auf gesellschaftliche "Schönheitsstandards" anspielt, sind die immer noch regionsabhängig und unterliegen eh IMMER dem Wandel der Zeit.... Just my two cents.

    I have to respectfully disagree a bit. I have always felt that true schadenfreude comes as an almost act of deep empathetic connection. It is the doorway into feeling connected to someone because we have all failed. Much of media is focused on flawed perfection...perfectly lit perfect looking actors on a perfectly designed set to create false drama. The world is belittling. So anything that reminds us that we are not alone in our awkwardness is funny out of direct empathy. We identify with and immediately feel an observers sense of relief and nostalgia, in that moment.

      I think it's possible that your theory fails to explain the pleasure some people get from live executions/hangings/etc. That's caused more by the complete lack of empathy.

      I think there are degrees. When looking at the clips, I giggled at the ones where no one got hurt, or a least hurt badly - stuff I'd laugh at myself about. I cringed at the clips where there had to have been a visit to the ER.
      I used the term today to describe how I am feeling at the arrest of Roger Stone.
      I, in no means, want to see anyone hang. I don't think that's schadenfreude - that's sadism.

      They might have gotten the pronunciation right but not the meaning. In order for it to be Schadenfreude the joy has to come from real suffering or harm. For example, if someone falls and there is no serious injury and you laugh that is not Schadenfreude. However, if that person fall causes them serious injury and you laugh at that, then that is indeed Schadenfreude. Watching something like Jackass and laughing at it is not Schadenfreude. Laughing about about the cast member who died in a car accident and finding joy in that would be Schadenfreude.

    This is the most satisfying video I've ever watched because it puts into words so many thought I've had recently. And by recently I mean during Trump's entire campaign and presidency. Every time Trump made a 'blunder' it would get worldwide attention and it would frustrate me so much and it took me a while to figure out why. Even if a news station was outright left, by reporting on him they were still feeding the fire, giving him more power by just mentioning his name. It started to make me think that maybe each 'slip up' he made wasn't so accidental. I would never bring this up in conversation though, number 1 because it makes me sound like a deluded conspiracy theorist but also because it's kinda hard just to blurt out 'hey let's stop talking about trump' when no one on either side wants to do that. Whether he succeeds or fails, it's all news because someone wants to hear about it. I would really love it if politics news was a relevant, serious discussion about global issues that affected real day-to-day people not just a constant 'what the fuck has he done this time.'

    There is a larger example Schadenfreude & that is many times you will feel that this man/woman isn't working very hard on something & still getting a better off revenue it can be the scene of your job of any youtube roasting channel. One thing we must learn is that Schadenfreude either works if you are a subject for a mass & to be honest it creates a lot of negativity as you just know how not to work & get the revenue or just roast some other people etc. Which is good sometimes but should not be encouraged.
    HOW it can end?
    It can end 1. by understanding & awaring about Schadenfreude.
    2. If all people get employed or just do the job they love. Then people won't have time to encourage the people who are just assholes & misleading. They will see the work & make a better society.
    3. Taking it as serious as a disease. Bcoz if politics get bad leaders. There will be a WW3. Would you like that ?
    Thankyou guys for reading, I make breakdowns. Have a nice day :)

    Honestly, I don't see the link between Trump and the concept of "Schadenfreude". People simply tuned in to see him during the primary because it was entertaining to see him make a mockery of a thoroughly corrupted political process and to contrast him against robotic, bought-off traditional Republic Party candidates like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, ripping them apart.
    Republican voters liked him as an underdog and saw him as a "straight shooter", even though he's constantly lying his ass off and flipping back and forth on every issue.
    Democrats liked seeing the Republican Party get torn to shreds because they're so off-the-wall crazy these days and pushing for disastrous policy for anyone but the super rich. So no, I don't think anybody on the left believes they're "genuinely trying to help" the American people.
    And now, of course, he's president, so it's impossible to look away. Calling out his blunders is not "Schadenfreude", it's simply necessary to keep pointing out that a 70 year old man-baby is now leader of the free world.

      Sir Psycho Sexy And now that Jeroboam was so successful at ripping apart both republican and democrat politicians, all of whom are corn fed with guile, the entire nation will soon be ripped apart by the very people who created SCHADENFREUDE; the Germans. How fitting!!! Our Satanic, brain dead politicians will crawl to their lover Germany in their day of trouble. But Germany will cut their heads off and may even stack em like pyramids as they did back in the days of the Assyrians, the true name of the Germans. The only nation to have ever submitted to God's rule after Jonah finally got the courage from God to speak to the King of Assyria at Nineveh. Although man's submission to God was short lived, much the same as Israel's was. Mankind truly has a stubborn side when it comes to living God's way of life. MANKIND IS SO FULL OF HIMSELF, MAN WOULD RATHER DESTROY THIS EARTH AND ALL LIFE ON IT RATHER THAN REPENT AS THE HARDENED KING OF ASSYRIA DID. MAN HAS HAD HIS CHANCE AT CREATING A LASTING GOVERNMENT AND FAILED EVERY TIME. GERMANY WILL CREATE A TEN NATION COMBINE THAT WILL LEAD THE WORLD INTO WORLD WAR III. NUCLEAR WAR WILL KILL BILLIONS AND A 200 MILLION MAN EASTERN ARMY WILL TAKE THE WIND FROM GERMANY'S SAIL. THOSE TWO ARMIES WILL MEET EACH OTHER AT ARMAGEDDON BUT SATAN WILL CONVINCE THEM TO UNITE AND HEAD SOUTH TO JERUSALEM. SATAN CONVINCES THE DECEIVED THAT CHRIST IS THE ANTI CHRIST AND THE ARMIES OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD ATTACK CHRIST AND HIS BRIDE AT JERUSALEM. THE ARMIES OF THE WORLD DIE IN THE VALLEY OF JEHOSOPHAT. CHRIST BREAKS IN PIECES THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD AND CAST SATAN AND HIS DEMONS INTO OUTER DARKNESS. ONLY THEN WILL THERE BE LOVE, PEACE, AND HARMONY UNDER GOD'S GOVERNMENT AND MANKIND WILL BE FREE AT LAST TO LIVE GOD'S WAY OF LIFE. ALL MANKIND WHO HAS EVER LIVED WILL BE RESURRECTED AT THE END OF THE THOUSAND YEAR MILLENNIUM. THOSE WHO MOCKED, RIDUCLED, LAUGHED AT, AND TREATED WITH CONTEMPT GOD'S TRUE WAY OF LIFE WILL BE RESURRECTED TO THEIR SHAME AND DISGRACE AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD ALLOWED TO LIVE GOD'S WAY OF LIFE. LIVE IN HIS LAW ACCORDING TO GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION AND GROWING IN GOD'S SPIRIT, OBSERVING GOD'S FESTIVALS , LIVING IN THE SPIRIT AND BY THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST. THIS TAKES PLACE IN THE GREAT FALL HARVEST OF THE SECOND RESURRECTION AND THESE MORTAL FLESH AND BLOOD WILL HAVE A HUNDRED YEARS TO REACH SPIRITUAL MATURITY AND BE TRANSCENDED FROM PHYSICAL TO SPIRIT BEINGS IN ORDER TO BE BORN INTO GOD'S SPIRITUAL KINGDOM OR FAMILY. A FAMILY OF GOD CONSISTING OF BILLIONS OF FAMILY MEMBERS, WHO ARE GOD BEINGS AND WHO SHINE AS BRIGHT AS THE STARS AND NEVER SIN AGAIN. THESE CHILDREN MAKE UP THE ENTIRE FAMILY OF THE FATHER, WHO IS THE HIGHEST, MOST POWERFUL AND GLORIOUS, FOLLOWED BY HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST WHO SACRIFICED HIS LIFE IN ORDER TO GIVE MORTAL MAN ANOTHER CHANCE AND WHO IS ALSO THE HUSBAND OF HIS BRIDE, THE FIRST FRUITS OF THE SPRING HARVEST, THE FIRST RESURRECTION AND THE MILLIONS WHO WERE BORN DURING THE THOUSAND YEAR MILLENNIUM WHO GREW UP IN GOD'S GOVERNMENT IN A GARDEN OF EDEN WHERE THERE WAS NO FEAR OF ANYTHING. ALL THOSE WHO HAVE EVER LIVED WHO LIVED GOD'S WAY OF LIFE, LIVING BY HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS, LIVING IN THE SPIRIT AND BY THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST WHILE SATAN WAS STILL SITTING ON THE THRONE OF THIS EARTH; WHO BECAME THE BRIDE OF CHRIST AND ARE NOW SPIRIT BEINGS WILL ADMINISTER THE OFFICES OF GOVERNMENT, RELIGION, SCIENCE, THE ECONOMY, AND EDUCATION UNDER THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, JESUS CHRIST. ALL THE INSTITUTIONS THAT MANKIND WAS INCAPABLE OF RUNNING BECAUSE MAN ON HIS OWN FREE WILL CHOSE THE TREE OF GOOD AND EVIL. MANKIND WANTED THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AND THAT LIFESTYLE WAS PROMOTED BY SATAN, THE god OF THIS WORLD. AND SATAN HAS DECEIVED THE WHOLE WORLD. ...THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH ARE OUT OF COURSE... PSALM 82. JESUS CHRIST AND HIS BRIDE WILL DO WHAT MANKIND COULD NEVER DO. PUT THE FOUNDATIONS OF THIS EARTH BACK ON COURSE. ONLY LIVING BY GOD'S TREE OF LIFE WILL A UTOPIA EVER BE ACHIEVED. ONLY BY MANKIND UNITING HIS HUMAN SPIRIT WITH GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT, BY LIVING GOD'S WAY OF LIFE, WILL MANKIND EVER RETURN TO LIVING BY GOD'S TEN COMMANDMENTS. IN THIS WORLD, MANKIND CHOOSES TO LIVE SATAN'S WAY OF GET, INSTANT GRATIFICATION, A LIFE OF SELF PLEASURE FOR SATAN HAS BLINDED MANKIND AS TO WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE NO OTHER gods BEFORE ME. MANKIND HAS BEEN GIVEN FREE MORAL AGENCY. MAN HAS FREE WILL TO DO AS HE PLEASES. MANKIND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BLAME ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES IN THEIR DAY OF TROUBLE. GOD HAS RAISED UP TWO WITNESSES IN THESE LAST DAYS. BUT JUST AS IN THE CASE OF ALL OF GOD'S PROPHETS THROUGHOUT MAN'S HISTORY, GOD'S PROPHETS WERE IGNORED, SCOFFED AT, AND TREATED WITH CONTEMPT. SATAN'S LIES AND DECEPTION IS WHY MAN LIVES IN DARKNESS. IT IS ALSO WHY MAN WILL NEVER GET RID OF HIS PUFFED UP PRIDEFULNESS AND ARROGANCE UNTIL SATAN IS REMOVED. ONLY THEN WILL MAN BECOME HUMBLE AS A SMALL CHILD TO LEARN THE WAYS OF HIS HEAVENLY FATHER. WHETHER YOU LIKE HIM OR HATE HIM, GOD ALMIGHTY WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY AND YOU WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT HIS JUDGMENT.

    Labour MP, Diane Abbot became the cause of many cases of Schadenfreude here in the UK recently. During the election her mistakes during press interviews lead to ridicule by other party leaders and supporters costing the Labour party many votes.
