Having the face of a complete lunatic helps a lot
He knew he was not Clark Gable. He used what he had. Perfectly.
It does indeed.
I think he just has the face of a complete Jack Nicholson and we're the ones who were conditioned to perceive that as maniacal by his roles
Did you just give us a truth bomb?
What if we can't handle the truth? :P
I have been waiting to make that film reference.
Very subjective... but IMHO Nickson looks sane when he is taking a normal photograph. But because he was (he has retired) such a great actor is able to animate his normal face into insanity or rage depending on the situation called for in the given movie.
Al Pacino: the art of yelling
YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wh-wh-what the fuck are ya talkin about? Have you SEEN Dog Day Afternoon?
Robert De Niro: the art of repeating.
Hoo-Ah!
Rodzilla kinda but in a enjoyable way
Everyone says that Jack Nicholson looks like a crazy person. No he was just so good at playing one that his face became the picture people think of when they think of a crazy person....
I never thought of that before...
@@fourhorsemenmechanix757 I know. Pretty cool when you think about it that way
His chameleon eyes help too 😁 I have them as well
So art redirecting perception.
latent conditioning.
My mom was unnerved by his performance in The Shining so much that she was convinced he really was crazy. My dad assured her he was just acting. "NO!" she replied, "No one can just act that crazy". She was giving him the best compliment an actor can get.
When I was little I would ask my mom why my dad was on the cover for The Shining and she'd be like "that's not your dad, that's Jack Nicholson, he's in this movie." But it never made sense because he looked exactly like my dad so I'd just ask again and again 😂
I can be that crazy! Just hide my X-men comics or Stephen King books.

“sometimes the anger is justified”
*inserts clip of him strangling nurse ratchet*
Fuck nurse ratchet she deserved it
Georgia Clunis it was justified. Lol.
😂😂😂
Nurse Ratchet likes to be in power, she subconsciously uses the patients' illnesses against them in order to maintain that feeling of power.
*Her main goal should be to help them heal.* Billy was healing. He's been a scared, insecure little boy all his life. Never would think he could have a family and do good in this world.
He was gaining confidence, for the first time in his life, it's a breakthrough and that first time is usually associated with a ton of optimism since it's a new thing!
Nurse Ratchet recognizes that and like the justifiably most hated female character in film history she crushes his confidence and happiness and drags him down to square 1... His best chance at healing, crushed because she wanted to feel the power of control again.
And you wanna sit there and imply that choking her isn't justified? You literally make me sick.
@@mastereppsreturns6586 okay maybe your ending was a little bit much. But everything else. Totally agree with. Love the movie. Next time I suggest you just make sure to think that maybe not everyone is familiar with Jack Nicholson's work. Or maybe he hasn't seen that movie before. Because reading the end of your comment made me sick.👌
I am curious to how high his blood pressure is
Don't know, but I've met a few people who know Jack and he's apparently a very chill person in real life.
Low, he is retired and plays golf.
maybe all his acting has helped him vent anger and he is actually much more relaxed than the average man.
He also smokes a ton of weed
Heck he did EVERY drug known to science including LSD. Idk if he still used anybody form of substance now
Jack Nicholson is a joy to watch.
He truly is. I wished, though, that the beautifully impotent, prostrate anger that he shows in About Schmidt would have been included here. When he tries to assault a guy and can't even collect himself enough to make his hands into fists but instead slaps the guy. That truly shows range, compared to the extremely potent, fierce anger that he's more well known for.
He isn't afraid of getting ugly. In a world where Hollywood mostly portray humans as always being the prettiest little perfect things, he stands out like a shining idol.
A *SHINING* idol?
I see what you did there....
I met the man once. At a bookstore near the Stanley hotel, yes THAT Stanley hotel. And it was about as terrifying and cool to meet him as you would expect
If only we’d have the same experience you had here!!!
That’s so cool! What’d he say?
@@allys744 he said "Here's Johny, it's not funny"
Fantastic video. It's easy to write Nicholson off as an eccentric one-trick pony but you really bring out the nuance of his acting.
Who has ever written off Jack Nicholson as a one-trick pony? I think most, if not all, people recognize him as a great actor and give him his dues.
A lot of people accuse him of just playing himself in every role.
siennajohanna He doesn't 'play himself', he *brings* himself, or parts of, to each role.
The only people who write him off as a one trick pony are those who've only ever watched The Shining and Batman. His big iconic roles in which he plays psychos.
He's done much much more. Compare him in the Chinatown. Watch Five Easy Pieces. A Few Good Men. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's. The Pledge. All different. All genuine. All great acting.
Nicholson's performance in The Last Detail is so underrated..
In his youth, he'd have been one hell of a Wolverine.
Nicholson is at his absolute best in those short seconds leading up to his anger explosions

tbh, I think being angry is one of the most honest emotions, so whenever I see how someone becomes angry I always pay attention.
Awesome Video! :D
How bout a Jim Carry next time?
So what your saying is that the best way to reach honesty is to ... *introduce chaos?*
Great comment. If we will give an anger more attention, maybe we can see what lies underneath it. As well said in this video - anger is only a thin layer over something bigger and often complicated. We fear anger of others and ourselves, but we should stop it only if it becoming violence. Otherwise we should listen.
I agree, anger is the most honest, but at least in my experience it's more about the situation than the person, though it can't help but reveal something about the person. Just have to know how to separate the two.
Samuel Wallace no, I just feel a certain honesty from someone when they show their wrath. I'm being too subjective here. LOL sorry
Jim Carrey is a very good sugestion
I would really dig a complete list of all the movies referenced here.

This is coming so late! But the ones I recognized are Chinatown, the departed, the last detail, the shining, as good as it gets, about Schmidt, a few good men, the shooting, and one flew over the cuckoos nest. Hope this helps!
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH
Nicholson's bodily anger made me think of the 'Nicholas Cage loses his shit' video. Do a video on him and lose your mind like Abed
I'm a simple man. I see Community, I like.
Storytellers Community fans unite !!!
Six seasons and a movie.
Everything here is so perfect, from Nicholson to community but most importantly the video of Cage losing saved my life, it’s beautiful, thank you
This is just one of the innumerable reasons why Jack is my favourite actor.
Yours, not mine.
Trevor does this well in GTA v
MattVideo Productions Trevor is basically Jack Nicholson as a game character
MattVideo Productions Nah it’s over-acted to the point of it just being really tiring imo
I get angry every time the game changes away from the Jack Torrance outfit without me asking for it.
@Grym I do not think Trevor can make the audience feel that anger. Trevor is showing his fury with his actions, it's instant. It's like a sudden gunshot. Yes you will be afraid but only as long as you hear the gunshot. Nicholson's anger is like a volcano. You can hear it boilling. You don't see any body movements. You feel the tension and know it's going to errupt. It's that fear of when it's going to burst. That's why Trevor will never reach that level. He is giving it all in just a moment while Nicholson is making you tense and more tense until he explodes and you get paralyzed. A good example is Psycho (Nicholson) vs Conjuring (Trevor). While the conjuring will scare you all the time for dumb reasons, The Shining will start breaking you piece by piece until it goes full berserk and makes you terrified.
Takis Dimarelos but psycho isnt scary.
Watching him get angry is good for the soul.

I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter!!
This is def one of the best youtube channels ever!
I love that Tom Cruise uses the anger of Jessup (Nicholson) to win the case.
Hanged himself with a lean and 5 words What an actor
Jessup's anger was all he had. That's what made the movie better than the play. In the play he had evidence that Jessup was lying. In the movie he knew Jessup was lying but he had no evidence, he just had to "put him on the stand and get it out of him, somehow."
Brilliant acting and directing , don't care for Meat Head or Cruise,,,but Jack is an Icon...
Tom Cruise shouldn't be allowed in the same time zone as Nicholson. He'd never make a pimple on Jack's ass!
@@geraldgreenfield5808 Tom Cruise is a great actor.
This reminds me of a great concept a theatre director once expressed to me when I was acting in one of his shows.
The beauty of any actor's performance actually isn't their ability to unleash a tirade of emotions from deep within themselves, contrary to popular opinion. It's actually the beauty and subtlety of what lies underneath the emotion they are 'showing' to an audience.
In this video, that takes the form of whatever emotion Jack Nicholson is feeling underneath the anger which, I agree, is almost always clear and incredibly well done.
The example this theatre director gave me though, was a recurring moment in Anton Chekhov's plays, where a character who is in great pain begins to sing or whistle. As an actor, it's our job to 'whistle over the pain'.
So, can we get Nicholas Cage's Master of Freak Out for the next video, LOL.
Then Christopher Walken as "Master of the Awesomely Weird"
Then Tommy Wiseau's "Mastor of Terrible Movies"
despite all his rage, he's still just Nicolas Cage

Jim Carey is like the humorous version of Jack Nicholson
Only one of them didn't crash their career straight into the dumpster

That would be Jim, sadly.
Jim Carrey is also a lot creepier.

Nicholson's angry, muted acting in the background with your soothing, calm voice over = outstanding.
This is why he's my favourite actor of all time.
Young Jack Nicholson would be great as trevor from GTA.
I'm almost certain they based his body language and look from Nicholson's performances.
They did
Crassius Curio They based the look off of the voice actor who played Trevor.

You learn so much from these videos without even realising it and it even entertains
Also, does anyone feel like when the video ends that it was a trailer for something ?
3:31 the way he says "Coffin" is so genuine
Jack has to be one of my favorite actors! In addition to his mastery of anger, I think his performances as The Joker in 'Batman,' Jack Torrance in 'The Shining,' and Randle McMurphy in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' make a great case for his mastery of madness and lunacy as well. Fantastic video.
you have magnificently deep and educational videos all over! thank u!!
The true master of anger is Alex Jones.
Ira Glick lol
Ira Glick That's not anger. That's just shtick.
WE'RE BREAKING THE CONDITIONING
Somebody needs to do a break down on Alex Jones. Hahaha
Alex Jones isn't a master of anger, because he doesn't master his own anger. When he gets wound up he's a frothing maniac. The difference is that Jones just has a lot of volume, but Nicholson has nuance.
I had to rewatch this one twice. First time I was too distracted by Jack's acting.Too good
man you know i'm an actress just starting out, and this video reallllllly helped me so much. i have such a better understanding of acting now, like i always knew that when you are acting, you are showing a character as a real, living person with complex emotions and depth. but this video goes into how the same emotions are always so different, how character and personality affects everything, and how everything in the environment of the character that could in any possible way affect the tone of the emotion, will always affect the emotion. thank you so much
Madelyn Palmentieri Also watch nerdwriter's video on Anthony Hopkins' acting in Westworld. I really appreciated the mastery of emotions Hopkins possesses after that.
Mutilated Baby Wellll, that’s a bit rude, don’t you think?

Nobody like Jack. The master of his craft.
Always loved the quote by Horace: "Anger is brief insanity." I always seem to catch that watching great actors like Jack's portrayal of the emotion.
I'm sure Anjelica Huston could also make a video about the same subject but on his real life.
She said in her book that he was remarkably charming & kind with women.
I miss the old Nerdwriter intro with the cup of coffee :( it was so cathartic and relaxing
Anger is the truest form of honesty. Great vid and legendary actor. I also love how Kevin Spacey(who aesthetically reminds me of Jack) handles anger in house of cards especially. I'd love some Spacey vids and maybe some dark night Nolan vids as someone mentioned below. :D
woops. sounds like you will probably never get a kevin spacey video... hah
Anger isn't always honest. Sometimes it's very much a desperate attempt to be as dishonest as possible.

Jack Nicholson is the greatest actor I've ever watched, every film he puts in a stunning performance.
I admire the depths you go to analyse a topic and the skill you have to express to the common public.... Kudos...
Hi, I'm a 15 year old kid doing theatre and I'm going to portraying the role of Shylock in a short monologue. And like his confidence and anger, I want to reach or atleast be closer to it to an extent. And this helped me, thanks a lot.
Both songs, intro and ending, mention smiling. Nice touch.
You made a really good point that I never thought of. Because if there’s any actor you think could be accused of overreacting - it’s Nicholson. But he is always so genuine and rooted in layers, that his anger engulfs you with its impact. He’s incredible.
Your videos make me feel so strangely good inside.. It's incredible to see someone so passionate about learning. Not to mention each of your video essays are pieces of art in themselves. Seriously. It's beautiful.
Your use of language, imagery, and sound is poetic, and you always manage to convey your ideas in an easy to understand, yet incredibly detailed and thought-out way.
You are always able to re-evoke my passion for learning and essays with each video I watch.
Thank you for what you do! Keep it coming.

he just gave no fucks lmao
him, Marlon and Pachino were pussy magnets!
Really appreciate the content (particularly those which focus on film).
This is certainly one, and possibly the very best, of your videos (for my taste, at least).
Really inspires... and makes me think about the lead character in my current script. How so much of what you focus on in this video is what I'm trying to get across. A character who is extremely fearful (of a couple big things) but is masking it with anger. If I ever finish this script and make the film (big "if"), the actor cast as the lead will certainly be watching this video and several of Jack's films for inspiration.
Thanks!
Best,
Bob
None of us can avoid anger,
but we can't remove it from the constellation of our feelings,
but we can acknowledge it and understand it.
I never realized just how precise his expressions of those emotions were! That's really impressive. Thanks for highlighting those subtleties!
So basically Jack Nicholson would play the perfect Sith Lord? #DarthNicholson
Nah siths are calm and etc
@@user-yw2qz4fp9f But pretty much all sith lords have a great seething anger underneath that calm mask. Jack would be as good as anybody at portraying that. His role in A Few Good Men does this quite well at points.

He’s brilliant. Imagine doing that in front of a camera and booms and ordinary people all around him. He has to be the best.
