You are an outstanding teacher! I love it that I have to pause it every once in a while to catch up--that is rare. Usually when I try to learn stuff on UA-cam I have to fast forward to find the ten percent or so of the video that is actually educational. You're a breath of fresh air: you don't waste any time and I bet you've taught more people more efficiently than just about anybody else on UA-cam.
Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge, and so respectful of your students' time. One a scale of one to five I give you six stars. Thanks again.
7yrs and still relevant! Great vid, very informative.
Great Video , Thank you so much for taking your time , and go back in time. What a breakdown you did. OUTSTANDING VIDEO !!
Thanks again for using correct terms!
Great explanations about SATA Cables. Bravo! Man! Keep doing it! You are great!
Your awesome Linus! Even till this day this video is still holds up. You pretty much covered all my questions....lol.
Linus, you did it again, you helped me solve a tech problem with a video older than my nephew
Gotta love the windows vista screen in the background
After many years still a great and useful video for noobs like me who are trying to understand the history of computers.Thank you very much Linus
Hey NCIX - thank you for taking the time and effort to product this excellent, easy to understand and follow, video tutorial on SATA I, II & III, and SAS, cable usage and terminology. Keep up the good work!

I just watched an entire 10 minute video on SATA cables and it was worth every minute.
Wow man, I enjoyed your entire video bud. good job
Very informative.Thank You for speaking in a loud clear intelligent voice.
Excellent show. I'm sure people learned a lot =)
Thanks Linus
Great job. I needed to know about those standards as I am running a net Cafe here. My equipment will be ready for upgrade and you video will help me in my buying and installation decisions. Thanks so much.
Thank you for making this video. I am preparing for the CompTIA A+ certification and this video helped me understand SATA.
+Joy Parker Same here! haha
This really helped and made it easy to understand!
Is that windows Vista on the TV in the background....
Nice history lesson! Introducing about Sata 6.0 gb/s. Bet you never thought we'd still be stuck on this 8 years later.
I left this video with the original question still in my head. So... much... information!
Great video. I just subscribed. You're doing a great job at explaining things. Keep it up.
He's treating those motherboards how I treat my meat
Cameron Scott he wasn't jerking those boards
He didn't tenderize them though.
Smol
hehehe that was funny lol hehehehahaha
Interesting. Clearly explained.Thanks, man.
Very informative. Thank you !!
i dont think htis guy has noticed this video is 9 years old and that person is actually linus tech tips
@@bru-ri5es yeah I think so too

Very well explained Linus!! You deserve a subscriber
Thank you. Awesome video and clarification.
Great video! Keep them comin! Slow down! No hurry on video!
Very informative and easy to understand. I just purchased a replacement DVD drive for my older tower and did not realize it was a SATA interface. I can return it or get a SATA to IDE bridge port for around $20. The DVD drive only cost that much umh!
Excellent video. Found it very clear and informative.
Breaks old SATA port durring demonstration on purpose to show frailty because it is ancient.
It was Ancient in 2011 !!
My new built computer say "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." What is the problem? I dont have any OS disc yet but is it gonna be fix when I installed windows
I don't know, put the disc in?
What an intelligent young man, great work!
this video brought me back to the time of RIBBON cables.
True, but those fuckers were durable!
Nice info. I will never get confused know. Thank you!
P67A-UD4! I have one sitting next to me thanks to your unboxing all those months ago :). Cheers Linus!
ok yeah u answered my question at the end of the vid thanks, pretty solid explanations
well I actually understood most of this not because of you brother lol you might be only reason I come to you tube for help on pc world but as always I came to learn 1 thing and now got to learn 6 more things lmao but all worth it and thankful to you and sponsors that have the sight to see you are worth every dime they pay you.
HIGHLY EDUCATIONAL. thANK YOU LINUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for you time, this was well done.
you are very informative, thank you.
Hello Linus, need help for the safety issue of using MOLEX 4PIN to SATA power connecter............I bought a computer with an outside PSU brick so if I want to get one more SSD into the system I need to use an adapter to utilize the on-board 4 PIN molex to supply power to the SSD. However, I heard that the molex 4pin to SATA cable catches fire frequently (please kindly google "SATA connector burn", all of them are this kind of adapter cables, which has only 4 wires instead of 5)..............can I get some professional opinion from you guys about this 4pin to sata adapter? Silverstone is still selling it, does is mean it's still reliable?
Thanks LINUS!! Love ya man
Linus as a young guy, long time, jesus 9 years pas and its still the best
Very informative video, greetings from 2021
Great info.... Keep up the good work!
nice review linus!! thX
Damn Linus been on his hustle a long ass time. Props.
Great video! So helpful. Talk about SCSIs next!
Smart young man ! Congratulations !
absolutely fascinating stuff
i did my upgrade to an vertex just because of you and your amazing explanation unboxing and reviewing thing like bord's and ssd's
Didnt tell me anything new, but still very well made and informative video!
I have a major issue and I am in search of ideas to solve it. I have connected a red Sata Cable to the Sata 1 connector on the motherboard but found it to be to short for use. I tried to pull out the cable but the plastic clip is not working and is not allowing the two small locking tabs to free themselves from the holes to allow the freedom of the cable to be pulled out. I have tried poking at them with several different items and even tried to use needle nose pliers to attempt to squeeze the tab in far enough to disengage the locks. All have failed me.
Any suggestions from anyone??? I follow Linus avidly on your tube so fire away at resolutions here.
watching this video in 2020, still learned a lot of things
Good explanation. We have gone from PATA to SATA#G/s and caballing has gotten much neater. What is more important is the controllers.
Thank you! I'm still confused about the SATA cabling for my DVD drive. It came with only the data cable, but not the power cable. Will the power cable come with the power supply (not yet purchased)? Or will I have to purchase the SATA power cable separately, and if so, does that also plug into the motherboard to draw power through that from the power supply, or does it connect directly to the power supply? It's been over 20 years since I did a build, and was used to the "Master/Slave" IDE cables. Since that's gone, now I have to learn a lot of stuff "over-again-for-the-first-time." Help?
So will i need a sata power cable for my hard drive?
Thanks very helpful
i had no clue SAS exsisted...... til now... thank you for the info
i've seen many ppl replace their perfectly working sata cables when they upgraded to a sata3 harddrive. A sata 3gbits cable will work with the exact same efficiency as a sata 6gbits cable, they r infact identical except to a different lable printed on them
Really helpful thanks,
I still don’t know how to pick the right ssd for sata 😕
Im confused af. Im about to get an SSD, and i want to connect it to my SATA 3 Port Gb/s. Do i specifically need a a Sata 3 cable that supports 6Gb/s? Or can i just take a normal cable?
A "SATA 3 Port" is 6Gb/s.....A "SATA 3Gb/s Port" is a SATA 2 Port. But the cables are cheap and backwards compatible (meaning a SATA 3 cable will work with a SATA 2 or SATA 1 device) so just snag a SATA 3 (6Gb/s) cable or two.
And check where you'll hook it up to see if straight-angle or right-angle is best!
awe, baby Linus
Very informative, I like it!
Hi sir, so on everything is fine ,thank you for this video ,then one thing can u explain about SATA ports internal controller are how its works
handy stuff there .thanks for the info.
So...
Whats the biggest length a sata cable can be?
Great tutorial/s mate! thanks!
VERY impressive and information. I'm definitely subscribing to your channel. Thank you.
very good! thanx Dano
Lovely explanation and informative
Very nice presentation.
Well done!
Thanks for a great channel! Just one tip: the word is throughput, not thoroughput.
very good video. thank you for such useful video.
so i can connect multiple IDES to one esata? i was wanting to build a tower or box that holds 10 IDE hard drives with its own power supply which allows you to connect them to a PC via esata. because motherboards these days either dont support IDEs at all or only have 2 IDE ports at most.
This was so helpful, thank you! I’m going to hunt down a nice 2TB hard drive to connect to my motherboard.
I have one question though, atm I have 2 hard drives and 1 optical drive connected to 3 of the four SATA connectors coming out of the motherboard. (Sata2_0 - sata2_3). I have however only one set of cables running from the Powerbox to the hard drives with only 2 sata connectors to supply power, but I would like to install 3 hard drives at once, does that mean I need a new powerbox? I also have a sata connector in the cable set running from the powerbox to the optical drives, but if I disconnect that one I lose my optical drive.
Thanks for the help!
I guess you'll need a new one (not that I know that you do), but it's better safe than sorry. So, I'd suggest you to not buy online (that is if you are). After the current pandemic, I say you take help from a certified computer tech (in person). Hope I could help :)
Very helpful.
very well, thanks for a very detaied information
Where can i find a duel SATA2 board connector like the one you showed on the board? I am having a very hard time fining them. Thank you
hi just purchased a used machine that has several esata ports on back. I have about 10ide pata 120 to 300gb drives with data to access what cable(s) do i need to purchase and will i be able to quickly plug them up as needed to review \ access contents
I was hoping to learn something that I didn't from the video. I have two hard drives, one is an SSD drive the other is a typical disk/ platter drive. I was hoping to learn if there was a difference between my multiple SATA sockets on my motherboard, so I knew where was best to plug them into.
very good channel thanks helps a lot
Very informative, learned a lot; however, could not understand what the controller card at the end of videos was called! Are you saying "staff card"?
I have one Sata 3 controller port on my mother board. I need a second one. Can I a breakout splitter with to do it or do I need to use some sort of card which will improve over a Sata ii but not as fast as the Sata 3 on mother board? Thanks
i have a shuttle Xpc version FH-67 what do i use the E-sata / USB in front of the pc for can i connect a bare external harddrice or what do i use it for
very informative, thank you~
is there an adapter that lets you link 2 of them into a single SSD to bump the upper limit of the drive to 6 gb/s? or at least faster than 3gb/s
sucks to have a sata 3 gb/s mobo and a 840 pro.
Damn 10 years and he hasn't aged a bit. I'm calling it rn Linus is immortal
Great video I have just bought an SATA 3 SSD drive and my older motherboard only has SATA 2 speeds and connections I was told by my local shop that I should purchase a controller card to convert SATA to to SATA 3 making it run at the 6gbps that it is meant to.
young linus, classic
@OfTehRose Yes, SATA2 is backwards and forward compatible with SATA3. Meaning you can also plug SATA3 drives into SATA2 connectors. But the drive will be limited to SATA2 throughput of 3Gbps.
You are a SATA PhD. I truly wish I could take a computer class from you. Thks
so what was the purpose of docking the sata II connections onto the side of the motherboard? for eSata connectivity much like a USB or external storage device?
