Nancy McWilliams is such a brilliant psychologist, researcher, and lecturer. She has honestly helped me immensely with my own understanding of how to be a practicing psychologist and how to utilize theory to help my clients.
1. Secure Attachment Style 2. Self Continuity - Self Constancy 3. Sense of Agency - Self Efficacy - Autonomy 4. Self Esteem - that is Realistic and Reliable 5. Resilience - Affect Regulations - Affect Modulation - Ego Strength 6. Capacity to Reflect on the Self - Insight into Illness - Capacity to Mentalization 7. Advocacy for Self & Community 8. Vitality 9. Acceptance of things that can't be changed. Grieved it - Acknowledge it - Grateful for it . 10. Capacity to Love, Work, Play.
Important correction: number 1 is "security". She uses attachment style as one possible framing to understand security. Attachment theory is just one lens of psychotherapy
She’s a great psychotherapist and a great woman too. An acute connoisseur of human mind. I’ve read all her books during my training and I found them to be a source of inspiration.
Thank you. I have always greatly valued Dr. McWilliam's clarity in her teachings, and her wisdom, experience and passion. She is so expert and helping me to understand and appreciate integrative and contemporary psychodynamic theory and practice. One of the absolute foundational pioneers of alternative conceptualizations of personality and other clinical psychiatric disorders. Thank you so much for passing this along.
Haha - I thought this was an advertisement over what I was intending to watch. It was so good I didn’t go for the skip button but wanted to let it play! Well done! What a clear and concise presentation well spoken.
I resonate with her comment about finding it difficult to help people with anhedonia or that persistent flatness. I think because Nancy McWilliams has said in another video that she has a depressive/hysterical personality (you have to hear it in context), that these particular patients are triggering. What she may be experiencing is some countertransference, as it's so depressing to work with someone like that.

Funny. So legit.😂
A very interesting and useful list of criteria for mental health, considering that therapists are trained to view things from the angle of pathology
