When discussing homelessness, what can get overlooked is the experience of children without a home, living in temporary accommodation in B&Bs, or sub-standard houses that they may have to leave with little notice.
What impact is this having on their health, both mental and physical?
Newsnight’s Health Correspondent Deb Cohen has been meeting the children and families affected by this hidden homelessness.
In the studio, Emily Maitlis is joined by Conservative MP and Father of the House of Commons Sir Peter Bottomley.

No one should be homeless in 2021 especially children.
There not there placed into foster care. A grand per child per entry to the system. Kids are fine its a good luck situation to re unite when parents find accommodation .
On a lighter note, here in Denmark this does not happen.
It's often hidden so you may not know
People will keep voting in the Tories, and then acting shocked when they see things like this.
@The Matrix bollocks, then the government should have built more affordable housing
@The Matrix you need to read more.
New Labour gave thousands of houses to migrants; and put British families into B&B. No such housing crises pre 2000, ie pre influx of millions of migrants 2000-2016.
@The Matrix why does that exist...because the bankers and politicians crashed the economy for profit (they saw a 9x increase in only two hours). immigration and all the cruel deaths are simply a diversion. eugenicist westminster.
@The Matrix they have in the past. its np to care for someone. your only looking down at the suffering because looking up at the politicians pissing all over you is too complex to deal with.
Yes they are. When I was in temporary accommodation there was so much black mould (the whole bed wall) that my daughter now has breathing issues. I had to give her up for her own safety. This country should be ashamed of itself.
Also there were slugs on my daughter's cot it was so cold that there was sheet ice on the floor in the morning. We were houses with convicted peodophiles. The irony was that there was a woman who owned a nice b&b who wanted to put us up in safer accommodation for less money and the council declined it. Also it's not free it cost me £50 a week for a "bed and breakfast" service charge it was NOT a bed and breakfast there was no food there was rarely running water, the heating was on a timer and wasn't changed during winter. It was completely exploitative.
if the social safety net was stronger and the government built mass social/affordable housing then less people would fall through the cracks. Everything else is just window dressing
eugenicist government. theyre quite happy with us suffering.
Debt interest was £45b in 2021 budget, every year that number grows as the national debt grows & swallows more tax revenue. Its called a national debt de@th spiral because poverty kills, correcting it involves tariffs on cheap imports & subsidies for UK industry to raise tax revenue to match state spending. There is no other way except austerity cuts to correct the decline into all state spending going on debt interest.
If you don't have enough savings to support your family for a year, you're not rich enough to ethically have children in countries like this
If u already have the baby what u can do!? 🤷🏻 obviously they need help
@@K1BUMD4 True. But I once worked for a place in Oldham that paid minimum wage, and one guy lived in a place which sounded just like this and was having his 3rd kid, and then another co-worker was waiting to be put in a council home... It was really sad. He was a skilled fitter, and a good Graphics Designer. Yet he was on minimum wage on a council housing list. Meanwhile the boss of the company was also a landlord, had a new car every few months, newest phone every month and his wife would constantly upload images of all the renovations, furniture etc being bought for their large manor house.
Well said, some people want the government to simply pay their way while others struggle.
Having kids with no degree/career is the worst mistake in 2021
Everyone deserves a home, all the misery in the world has been brought about because of greed. The wealth of the rich comes directly at the expense of the poor.
They don’t care about the children at all. All the houses out there they can’t say they can’t find a place for the homeless people. The Council just doesn’t want to pay for the housing.
@@gem6458 That can’t be right because it’s not the parent’s fault to be homeless. Taking children away is very very wrong cos no one can look after them better than their parent. Lots of children get abused in care homes a lot and the child must not know or understand they are abused till they are adults and what can the “system” do then.
Can’t believe dwp leaders like Therese Coffey is allowed to live
Well done to the Magpie Project, we are watching and learning up here in Edinburgh (where all the same problems exist!).
CHILD NEGLECT IS A REAL PROBLEM IN UK
Yeah... neglect of the system. Leading families to homelessness because of no affordable housing. In Spain you can rent for £400 a month. In UK it's £1,500 a month. The goverment care more about money than people. People who can't afford all the bills and finances are being evicted. £1,500 rent plus council tax, bills, household finances, food, water, clothes and other expenses.
Are there not any (warm) food outreach programs in the Oldham/Manchester area (with Kitchen facilities service-users can use if necessary)? Women's centres with Kitchen facilities? Thinking about the cities in the UK I have lived in

These are the vagaries of selling off Council Houses.
The benefit of the few, who got a nice lump sum invested in their houses by hard-working taxpayers, many of whom went on to purchase a second home, using the ex Council House as collateral, then
were audacious enough to rent it back to the Council at a massive rent to house homeless people in. This has robbed young people of the same right the older generation had to a warm, safe, affordable home in which to raise a family, and is Morally Indefensible.
Children are expensive, for sure.
CHILDREN ARE BELOW POVERTY LINE IN UK
Homeless children, perfect scenario for sooooooo many connected!
They'll be going UNDERGROUND soon enough 👹
God please watch over these families amen.
It hurt my soul lord
I wonder what kind of world it will be when these kids are 30. Scary thought
That the same sentence your parents said 30 years ago, and every generation before that.
@@babajaga158 Well, it just shows the world is getting worse.
@@Greenpoloboy3 no it just shows that you getting older
@@babajaga158 But it doesn't. I was not alive in the 50's or 60's or 70's etc etc, but it does not take much research to see life was better, calmer back then for many. Kid's were not as bad as this. What kids do today, adults say they would never of done. The worst thing might of been knock down ginger

COUNCIL ARE DOING THEIR BEST
Forgive me Lord for being ungrateful
Labour has for many years, has gone so out of touch with Britain virtually unless it changes but please not kier starmer/tony Blair type.
I think its wrong when immigrants come here and complain like they do? They should be more grateful
It's pretty obvious, when you compare homeless families. To what we typically see, when we think of family life.
A house in the suburbs.
A backyard.
And a middle class paycheck.
We’re is Marcus …. YAWN
renting is a public health hazard
rent is extortion
eviction is violence
leave people their money for medicine and repairs
'Delayed development', 'poor muscle tone'. Sounds like me.
What a-suprise you invite large working class population over decades; into already poor communities;failed to build new housing to accommodate the current and new poor population and your surprised their no housing? Trying to blame the rights to buy which could never house a fraction of those that need it: with majority the profits going to the treasury.
Très triste de vue
The government is happy to home all the illegal immigrants but not intrested in helping there own people. Digusting

Listen, Man United might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in. CARRICK'S at the wheel, man. He's doing it. He's doing his thing. MAN UNITED ARE BACK!!!!!!
