      Agreed... and lets be honest, selling his house is not going to do anything. People facing housing shortages will never be able to afford that house anyway. Will probably go to a foreign investor who won't even live in it. At least this way, its lived in and being maintained.

      @@SoulCaliburDeathCrie If people are starving then it's not a utopia. Whilst I don't advocate for any ism I definitely think socialism in the form of having safety nets and free basic needs met as standard should be encouraged. Capitalism is destroying the planet and the societal health and well being of many countries. It perpetuates inequality and a system that allows for a few to live in luxury while many more times the amount suffer needlessly.

    I don’t really comment, however this really annoyed me.
    I live in London where the council have sold the majority of land to international property developers. They build big apartment complexes and sell/rent them at prices, working class people cannot afford. For example, a 1 bedroom apartment for £300,000.
    People can not afford these places and they cannot afford to move, and they rather be cramped in houses. If the council were more considerate of the people who live in London, issues like this wouldn’t happen.
    Oh and btw, these property developers are complaining these apartments they have built are empty but they refuse to decrease the price. So, it’s not like there aren’t places in London - it’s that people cannot afford them!

    Part of the problem is the UK planning system. It's a pain in the arse for developers to actually build houses as it can take them years to get permission for schemes. It has to be relaxed. Additionally, if the government reduced corporation and income tax for areas outside London, such as Cardiff, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow etc, then firms would move offices further north to take advantage of the tax incentives, taking people and jobs with them which will reduce the house prices down south

    Building more houses will not solve the housing crisis. The "affordable homes" that have been built are for those who can afford to buy a house, and they are most certainly in the minority. Many of these new builds are bought to let, with some individuals owning several houses in the same new developement. Greed, greed, and more greed. People renting the new builds are paying more per month in rent than they would have to pay for a mortgage on the same house, which contributes to keeping homeownership just out of their grasp. The Tory government are doing their best to return Britain to the days of slum housing and no NHS, and completely trash the wonderful things that Labour did for the people of this country.

    The title is misleading. In other countries people already knew that there are shrinking regions, where infrastructure is getting too expensive too keep and housing is more than enough. That doesn't change the fact that building a lot more homes in and around London would help to improve the situation there. Trying to make other regions more attractive for businesses can help in the long run, but is very hard to achieve, because attractive cities keep getting more and more of the economic pie.

    A lot of what people are saying here in the comments might be true, but nobody mentions the fact that globalization is also a big factor in this crisis. Many people are moving to the big cities, leaving their hometown behind - this creates a demand for housing in big cities and leave homes empty in the country side. It's not a UK problem, it's a global problem - the question is, should big cities grow rapidly or should we try to stop globalization?

      Because for example a Pole can work in the UK for just five years, live in a smallish room for that time, and save enough money to go back home and BUY a house OUTRIGHT. Obviously if we Brits could live in a room in Poland and work for just 5 years and come back to Blighty and buy a house, there would be 10 million of us there and the Polish would say how hard-working and humble British migrants are. But that ain't gonna happen, because the EU isn't a level playing field.

People who have lived for generations here are pushed at back of queues told they are not priority , and top of the list are asylum seekers. I was even told by my housing association that asylum seekers are top of the list. This is wrong and we need to address immigration to solve the lack of affordable housing.

    The government insists on enforcing a central building solution of build build build based on clever desk statisticians and technology. The problems would be far easier solved to give each local authority autonomy to make decisions on new builds and investment. Yes some areas may need thousands of new homes, others need investment to refurbish existing stock but go back to basics and let each council plan for their own area and just maybe the right levels of housing could be achieved for all

  • @norbertchong3920
    @norbertchong3920 6 років тому +2

    It's simple. Not enough houses are being built. People who already have homes which were once built on greenfield sites like to prevent builders from building other people's homes on greenfield sites. Too many immigrants. The Baby boomer generation did very well, they could easily get onto the property ladder, saw their salaries rise ~6x in 20 years, saw their homes rise ~7x in value in 30 years. Paid off their mortgages relatively young and now have enough money to buy second homes to rent out to Millennials who have seen their salaries rise just 20% in 10 years, whilst watching house prices rise 7% a year for the past 10 years, which is pretty much impossible to get ahead of. In the South East this would mean saving £10,000 a year just to keep up with the price increases of a 2 bedroom house.

      andrew300169 No, we just need to properly train our existing population and break free of this exploitative ponzi-style capitalism model that only serves to increase the profits of corporate giants that pay no tax anyway. Immigrants are only net contributors to the UK economy when they earn above £35,000:
      www.theguardian.com/money/2016/mar/12/eu-workers-deported-earning-less-35000-employees-americans-australians. How many of the 4 million + legal migrants who've come here in the last 15 years would fit that bill?

    • @andrew30m
      @andrew30m 6 років тому +1

      Henry Craven as basically every independent assessment shows immigrants from the EU are net contributors, it’s not even rocket science, they have expensive education abroad, are young and healthy and go home when they get older, unless they have married a British citizens. Training is not even the issue, we have virtually full employment, the issue is we have an ageing population and need more younger people to work in care homes, pick the fields, package in warehouses be engineers, teachers, the country needs them to function. The EU had done more to fight big business than the UK gov which has often been a blocker

I'm an ethnic minority in my London borough now, and like more of my white British neighbours long gone am selling up to move to the country. The place is spiralling downhill and worse by the year. A once pleasant area is turning into a ghetto with flytipping, street drinking, low level crime and relentless noise. Only one in ten pupils at the local school is white British. 75% don't speak English as a first language, or at all.

    It’s happening in America more so than there. Our problem is greed. Investors are buying up older homes and apartments turning them into luxury living facilities. My wealthy new neighborhood has large new homes that empty for the past 3 years. LLC’s are buying up the properties and letting them sit as they begin to immediately appreciate in value. An average buyer cannot compete in this market. It should be illegal. Affordable housing is a no go in Florida. DeSantis isn’t addressing the issue at all.

      @@theginjaninja132 I think 55 hour weeks on minimum wage should come to a lot less than 60%. If it still is then clearly those people shouldn't be living in the area. Building a house is a full time job for an entire year for a skilled builder. If someone is working a standard 38 hour week on minimum wage then they need to save up every single penny of their pay for at least two years to even remotely stand a chance of paying the builder. That's excluding the cost of materials (bricks seriously cost 50 pence each) and land. The reality is that even doubling minimum wage, an unskilled worker will always be paid less per hour than a skilled worker and they'll ALWAYS struggle to pay for the fruits of skilled work. There really isn't much we can do about it.
