Link between rise in temporary housing and mental health crisis revealed

- More than 95,000 people in England were living in temporary accommodation at the end of last year according to the Department of Communities.
And cramped conditions, damp and constant instability all too often creates a huge strain on mental health.
The Centre for Mental Health has warned that the increasing use of temporary accomodation to solve the housing crisis will only add to the pressure on services.
Sapphire Mcintosh has been to the Aylesbury estate in South London to meet people struggling to cope with life in insecure housing.

This is what happens when you don't have laws to protect the poorest
Tbh we do have very extensive laws and a welfare system to protect the poorest, and it works for most- however people will always slip through the cracks. Even just the concept of emergency accommodation is something many countries don’t have.
Many of the flats that look like the ones she is in (it might even be the ones I’m thinking of) are set for demolition - the issue being (at least where I’m from in London) is that a few people remain in the flats and won’t leave. Therefore the whole block can’t be knocked down and rebuilt
@@Bringon-dw8dx Finally an intelligent response. Britain has one of the most generous welfare systems in the world...and such a system is inevitably going to be abused by some people.
@@Tom_Samad yes it is indeed a generous system but it's incredibly difficult to navigate, and many who are genuine claimants in need are often incapable of even getting through the application process, it's that gruelling and stressful. Unfortunately however it is open to abuse as you say and there are those who are certainly smart and determined enough to play the system, for them it's actually like a career, and it's because of those that the rest have such a hard time.
@@garywright8137 Just heard of several occupants of social housing here with us have more than fifteen houses (properties)abroad. Fraud and abuse of the system is real.
This is basically the same as some of the worse conditions during the 19th century.
But people voted for the Rees-Mogg Dickensian Brexshit Britain.
The UK is a developed country, how could you let such miserable housing conditions even exist?!
It’s just unbelievable, where do we start to sort this ? Just horrific.
They has always happened in Britain. Having mold growing over everything is really easy if you get damp in an environment that you heat. I have seen it in many properties and it can be extremely difficult to get rid of.
Uk is not a developed place it’s a third world country
@Lean Dean leave the Uk

This is so sad. Its unfair.

Appalling. I wish I'd never heard of Conservatives. 🙏💔
Sadly there’s a prevalent view that “ you’ve got a roof over your head”
It’s not the people working with the homeless, eg council workers, it’s government funding that’s the problem. Without money the temporary accommodation is often disgraceful.
Speaking from experience.....some Nasty council workers...Bullies. So No.
We spend more than 1.2 billion on this a year and it’s increasing rapidly, What are you talking about.
@@sweetd960 Well obviously there will be some people who will be unpleasant, but people also have to work with the tolos they;re given

So miserable living conditions and feeling trapped in them create miserable humans? Who would have thought? Not this government that's for sure.
Why is it the government fault for peoples responsibility?
@@anonomous8719 Who decides minimum wage? Who enables landlords to get away with providing homes that are not water tight. If it is not the governments responsibility why is there a housing minister?
@@anonomous8719 because in London and many cities in the UK the average rent is about £1300 a month which is 15600 a year, given the average UK salary is £29k and after tax etc. the net take home pay is £23K that's 65.22% on rent alone. and that's if you even make 29k most people don't the only reason it averages that way is due to millionaires being included, the majority of the UK earn less than 26K. when you factor in other costs, you have a system where the majority of the population of the UK cannot afford housing even if they work.
The government should have put in better housing policies rather than let it get to a point where the majority of people would are struggling to survive to a basic 1st world human standard.
Need I remind you the 2008 crash was triggered by housing which was buoyed up by unaffordable housing.
so you can turn a blind eye and if you have any sense at all; at least be grateful your not in the same situation. but if the world starts to collapse around you it will eventually effect you too.

In 6 yrs of living there she could not find a decent job? I would do everything in my power to move out to a better situation. You got to be proactive in your life.
Can't these landlords at least supply dehumidifiers for the problems that are caused by condensation rather than leaks? Anyone would be depressed in these conditions.
Seriously 😂I used to rent and my bought my own dehumidifier.
Just how much bureaucracy and waste is in the system where our tax is spent is unbelievable. I would love to get into these councils and government funded operations to really see how poorly they are managed. Its a criminal shame that people have to live in those towers still today.

Please we live in civilised world and digital world just do things good for human beings and right for human beings we are human beings we want to live like a human beings. ❤
My understanding is that public housing was turned over by the government, to local governments, the councils, who did a pitiful job. Building was parcelled out to so so contractors, who used untrained workers, who naturally produced pathetic workmanship. Material used was second rate. Goverment housing, regardless of country, is always second rate. Sub standard from the start! People move in and within no time start to see problems, and eventually everything just falls apart. As long as it is still standing goverments are not anxious to replace it. I also have to say that architects have no idea where they are building and who they are building for, because they apparently don't attempt to find out.
How is this even a thing in 2021 gov needs to get decent permanent housing for these poor people. Already so much too deal with these days without having to live in damp and mould.
Physics!
This is so wrong on so many levels how can a council let people live in theses conditions!!!!
Poor Raquel:( Moving to a new home place is on the third place on scale of the most harmful distress after death of a loved one and divorce.
That’s horrible.
The issue with the UK is that whatever government we vote in it will be occupied by people from privileged backgrounds who don't care about the majority of the population and only do the job because of the money they earn
Hi my flat is a dump no heating no hot water 3...year and a dump and flooded all my furniture author of The Way I contact the council I don't get not help for my council I'm glad that I've got mental problem disabled south wark thank you very much
This is sad ,,,but when you miss to pay council tax ,,they will take you to court,, and the owners of this building would never be...
You're talking shite.
Why doesn’t she sue the housing association ?
wow, those flats look like a scene from a horror movie
How can we help to speed awareness o n these disgracefulness?
Your can't fix the housing problem until boomers stop voting on housing prices!
It’s not a crisis it’s a scandal, Engineered on purpose by those with the wealth to increase capitals leverage over labour.
Artificially Low interest rates, sell off social housing to reduce competition, privatisation of the market and the “assetification” of houses. And obviously housing is not a market in which normal rules apply like the healthcare market, because people will pay all of there money if need be to not be homeless. Which is why it can’t be treated in the same way as other commodities.
Policies designed and implemented since the 80’s to make people without capital slaves to those who have it.
Ie the mostly young and poor
I can't believe the government put her in that house with all that mould and rotting wood, it's beyond revolting... Poor girl...
Yes. We need more funding for the trash bin at is the council house
GOD HELP US PLEASE!!!
God is part of the program
Is there United Kingdom AD2021shown? Hard to believe it's happening again and again since 70's
Putting funding in to fix the current properties and disrepair is going so save so much money in the long run as they won’t need to move as much or go into temporary accommodation which when you look at the amount of time they spend in there and the cost of temporary accommodation, you could’ve probably bought them a house for cheaper.
1/5th of the UK population is foreign ... imagine how much of our housing stock is taken up by FOREIGNERS
@channel 4 news Do you mean Exempt accommodation? Because there is a massive story there. Worse than this. Milions paid out by dwp, no check or control direct access to dwp bank by rsl's. Vunrable people not looked after, no definition defined for support. They are taking about a grand a month per room in poor properties, protected from the need of building regulations. People are literally left to die ( Pat for example left to die) people are generally farmed for profit. The council quote, can't do anything to ask a provider to supply support because there is no provision for such in Exempt accommodation.
Poverty, the very British ruthless method of control. It's no accident it's very deliberate & very profitable for a lot of MP's & other Landlords. Sub-Standard housing, no maintenance to pay, charge exorbitant Rents that are paid by Housing Benefits. It's a money making machine.
my mother had that problem on the kingswood estste so she buy a house so we family mellow mellow right out
so sad
Aylesbury estate worst estate in Southwark I know because I live there
Interesting. I wonder if there are similar problems in France or Germany.
same in all rich EU countries
Yes most likely
Can't speak for those two countries but in the Netherlands where I lived for few years the houses where we lived all belonged to a state regulated housing association which was (& probably still is) pretty much the norm for the country. If you have a problem, you contact them & they send someone round, look at the problem, work out how long it will take to get any materials and their workmen (yes, they have their own builders, plumbers etc., no over priced out sourcing to cowboys) together to do the job & with in a few days or weeks depending on the size & complexity of the job it's sorted to a professional standard.

Why’s anyone responsible for their housing?
What’s withholding young able bodied (& minded) ppl from getting a job and paying rent on a decent flat (obviously outside central London)?
Obviously if there’s a mental/physical disability it’s not possible but I truly doubt that every single person there is disabled
Why? Because the UK says so. Most countries don't give ANY AID (let alone houses) to anyone. UK does.
Why are you blaming the people for making use what the government makes LEGALLY available?
These people didn't create these laws, nor stole any houses at gunpoint. They are not the problem.
Anyone on benefits in the UK would have to work and provide for themselves in other countries.
@@rv292 well the UK government also says the houses they’re in right now are good enough. Otherwise it’d put them somewhere else according to your theory. So I don’t see why you or they have anything to complain about. This is what the government finds satisfactory as public housing. Deal with it or rent privately if you don’t like it. Byeeeee
Money doesn't grow on trees, sweetie, even for people working full time. Unless you're scrounging off mummy and daddy.
What you talking about even if you work full time double full time shift you weren't be able to afford rent in uk without any support
Then there would be no need for a council/social housing at all then
Clearly a very bad situation, BUT - why are all the curtains closed all the time? If you have mold, you should have the windows at least tilted as often as possible? At 1:09 you see condensation on the inside of the windows, meaning it's too warm inside and you need to have windows tilted for fresh air? At 1:37, the windows are really dirty, doesn't she ever clean the window frames?
She had to ask the druggies to take drugs elsewhere…time for an exit UK plan
That house has just got a little damp. Sort out the leak and it will go away.
Where are the father's
If you let too many people into the country over a short period and allow house building to slow to a crawl, then obviously, people will struggle to afford them. Make the housing companies use their land or compulsory purchase order it and give it to someone who will! Build some council houses too! Rocket science this is not.
maybe is time to chase fathers

Jesus was just a man and messenger, he ate pooped and slept. and was born. how can you make equivilant the creator and maintainer of the universe and al that there is to someone who passes out unconscious at night. get real man.
"Say He is Allah (God) the one, the truly unique. everything needs Allah (God) and He needs nothing. He never has children or offspring and He was never born (He always is and was). and there is absolutely nothing co-equal to Him in anyway (He is the truly ultimate and supreme)" Qur'An 112
"Surely, in the sight of Allah, the similitude of the creation of Jesus is as the creation of Adam whom He created out of dust, and then said: 'Be', and he was." Qur'An 3:59
That's right there is only 1 God (Allah) not 3 in 1 or a man or monkey or idol. think about if everything that is created has a beginning and fi you say the beginning had a beginning you will keep going forever, but at some point you logically need to get to a beginning that has no beginning and thus logically must always have been with out a start.

Get a job, work hard and pay for a better life. It’s not an excuse when all you do is breed and sit on the dole.
Sometimes it's hard. I live in an over populated area in England. It's a small town so not much jobs apart from factories which are very physically demanding. I applied for a call center job. And they pretty much highlighted I'm not getting the job because I don't have a car. Because there is no bus route there to get to the job.
Ironic because I want a job to make money as I have none. And couldn't get one because I don't have enough to learn how to drive.

Do these women work? Are the fathers of the children paying child support? People always look to the government to solve circumstances that they have created instead of being responsible for themselves.
